However, I am surprised he made it as far as he did. And at least he got a good tribute!

People don't realise how hard it is to play a recorder in a not-painful way. Hell, I still haven't learnt how...

In a not painful way? I can play the recorder..and it doesn't hurt..I learnt in Grade 4. Timelady picked it up really well, I only had to tell her the positions for the notes she wanted and that was that. She even played better than Lucy, who actually learnt too..Very musical I suppose. She picked up some of the notes by ear and found their positions..
Did you teach yourself or were you actually taught to play?

Me? Well we had a recorder music group thing in junior school... that would be when I was about eight. And I kept it up right through till I was about 15 when the school orchaestra sorta died in highschool (not JUST cos of my playing I might add!) but I don't have books or anything, I just like playing it. And I have a knack for picking up sci fi theme tunes by ear which is fun. I only play when I need to relax though... and my recorder is in pretty bad shape. It got snapped in half but my dad fixed it. I can't get a new one - it was a present from a mad friend.
Wait... we're talking about recorders, I'm sure that's against Guild rules. Ahem! Doctor Who, yes.

Doctor Who, yes. The 2nd Doctor pulled out the recorder to inspire young children to play musical instruments, so discussing recorders is clearly related to Doctor Who! ... right? sweatdrop I hated playing the recorder in music class. We didn't each have our own, so they would sterilize the mouthpieces in rubbing alcohol. It tasted awful... gonk

Hmm we had the same thing in our music class, which was why I was glad to have my own. Oh... when I mentioned 'not painful' earlier I only meant in terms of sound - it's like playing violin. If you're bad it can sound really bad... though I suppose that depends on the recorder too.
But changing the subject back to Doctor Who, I see that Tom Baker is fast approaching his victory. Though I must admit I'm surprised Sylvester McCoy's lasted through too. I guess he's another one people like but don't feel too extremely one way or the other about so he's slipped past the competition...
