The vines were more adamant than usual. They found her every single time, no matter how well she tiptoed through the water, and they took her right back to where she started.
This time, she used her hands to pad her a** as she fell on the ground.

If tiptoeing wasn't working for her this time, perhaps it was right to attempt different methods. She waited for the perfect moment, jumped into the water as quickly as she could, and attempted to surf it like Dawson did.
She sunk like a stone, and scrambled as fast as she could out of the water before vines or sludge could even catch up with her. Success! Of a sort.

Dawson cheered for Maebe all the way through and was going to offer her a sandwich for all her efforts. Then the Bad Wave took him away.

She instantly regretted trying to run ahead of Dawson for the first time since they'd gotten there, when the bull found her. But those vines had strengthened her legs just enough to give her the chance to slip away, and she fixed her mistake by coming back to the edge of the lake and waiting for Dawson.
She patiently waited, even as she was rammed in the side, right where she had been before, and didn't that just hurt like a b***h.
She'd just have to wait for him outside again, while licking her wounds.
