"Ah." Her head tilted as his lips moved up her jaw line and behind her ear. She felt her hat starting to slid off the back of her head from being pushed during Chance's enthusiasm, and a hand left his neck to reach out and grab it by the brim. She pulled it offer for now, draping her arm over his shoulder as she looked up at him. She wondered why people couldn't be like that more often. Excited, passionate, awed. It was inspiring, contagious, as well, even if she didn't know what she wanted to channel it into.

It was a shame it'd come to an end for now.

The arm still around his neck unwound and her hand slid over his shoulder and down to lightly pat his chest. "It's time." She almost regretted having to be the one to say it.

"Okay, but - " And here was the important question. " - can you teach me everything to say in French that I never actually knew I needed to know, but will definitely be of use in the future?"

Chance finished off the last of his fish and set down his fork with a little jangle.

"You are, as ever, a woman of few words," he said, waving a hand and now taking the opportunity to lean back and prop not just one, but both feet up in her lap. "Don't worry, it won't be too much effort. I know how much we both love that, but we can just chill. And if it gets shitty, well, we can just ditch."

He smiled benignly at her. "Now. Dessert?'

He made a mental note of this, because even if Chance wasn't big on celebrating birthdays or holidays in general, he thought it nice to get something for the people he found the most interesting, at the very least.

Even if she was being a butt. Chance lifted his golfer and prodded Claude in the side with it.

"Don't you sass me, lady, you're gonna get your a** kicked if you don't watch your mouth," he said with a pointed look as he led the two of them to the next hole.

Both hands in his hair, Chance raked back his now sodden bangs, slicking the curls against the top of his head. He waded a little closer, batting away the piece of seaweed that had been flung at him, and bent down, up to his shoulders in the water.

"Mm. More of an annoyance, I'd say," Chance answered, and then stood again, clutching a fistful of wet sand - which, after leaning over and tugging at her neckline, he promptly shoved down the back of her shirt in a very casual sort of way.

He liked the warmth of Claude so near, because it was an outlet, and it was a nice combination; the heady rush of adrenaline had to be channeled somewhere, and if not into the warm and willing woman next to him, then somewhere else. But by the time he found something - or someone - else, chances were that the high would have run out, and he was impatient to keep it, selfishly wanting to feel it for as long as he could.

He was not one for emotions, except in scant circumstances, and this was one of them.

A sound left his lips, half a whine of annoyance, half a growl. He let her move slightly away before Chance grabbed for her again, hauling her back against him to cover her mouth in a searing, almost demanding kiss. The force of it made him stumble forward, and he caught the both of them.

He pulled away after several moments, breathing heavily, and his smirk was clearly visible in the dark, strangely distorted by the shadows and the moonlight. For a split second, there was almost something sharp about his face, but then it had gone, replaced by the same easy mildness Claude was used to.

"Sorry," he said. "Got a bit carried away. Kinda like a high for me and all. But you're right, we've gotta go."

Chance padded a few steps away to where their bags were, leaned down, and scooped them up before looking back at Claude.

"Ready, captain?"

She answered his question with another question. "Is everything we learn what we actually need to know and will definitely be of use in the future?" She smirked a bit.

"Silence is utterly provocative." Claude murmured in reply, though that was far from her reasoning at all. She just socialized as minimally as possible. She wasn't far behind in finishing her own dish, twirling the last noodles and seafood before taking a bite, and setting her fork down on her plate.

She leaned back in her chair, watching him as he spoke. "Ditch our own get together? How classy." Admittedly, hearing Chance say we can ditch it...it was nice, and she kept that to herself.

"Of course." She replied. "Go big or go home, mn?"

Claude let out a soft gasp, slightly edging away from the prodding club. She then gave Chance a look, because he was starting to capitalize on that awful reaction she couldn't control. She slid up to his side though, and ghosted a whisper of: "You should put me over your knee."

Which was also funny, because of the straight face she said it with.

She moved off to the side, and made a gesture for him to start them off on the new hole.

"After you."

Any other question she was going to ask, for the time being, was gone. Chance had crossed the line when he shoved wet sand down the back of her shirt. Claude's shoulders hunched as she froze, feeling the wet sand ooze down her back and followed her spine. She then slowly turned around to face him, her shoulders gradually relaxing.

Claude tackled him into the water.

It wasn't a missed opportunity. She had all day to ask questions...and plenty of time for when they'd sit on the beach to air out and dry.

She found herself surprised and caught off guard again since they came to the beach to see the stars, but this one took the cake. She blinked at the sound, peering curiously at him until she was hauled against him. Her lips captured in an intensity she wasn't sure she ever experienced before. Her hat hit the sand behind his feet as her hands fisted the material of his shirt, holding onto him tightly as she melded into the kiss.

When he pulled away she was breathing heavily as well, and her eyes scanned his face intently, and she took it all in to digest later. The smirk, the odd, fleeting sharp look, and the sudden change.

She had let go of him at some point (she wasn't sure when, she couldn't remember exactly), and as he moved away she didn't. She stared up at the stars for a long moment, and then swept down to pick up her hat. Claude placed it back on top of her head, and pulled the brim down over her eyes as she turned towards him. "Sorry means you'll never do it again..." She mused as she moved past him. "I want you to."

the answer is...

Back to where they started. Claude stilled to a stop in the alleyway right before the portal. She'd been silent since their trip from the beach after star gazing, and while that wasn't unusual for her, the silence had been marked by heavy contemplation.

She looked to Chance and murmured: "My guess now, mn?"

There was a pause.

"Good point," said Chance thoughtfully. "All right, captain, it's settled - you'll teach me French, and in return I'll teach you about the stars. Or something else you want."

He just gave her a look from across the table. "Something tells me that's not really it," said Chance, rolling his eyes, but he sounded amused. "Either way, your silence is something I don't mind, because it's interesting, and it usually means you're thinking about something."

One of his feet prodded her side. "We are the classiest ******** ever," Chance deadpanned, and he reached over, tossing a menu to her.

"Pick something out for us."

He stared at her and then let out a wheezing, gasping laugh, bending over and pressing his forehead against the club. For several seconds, Chance just stood there, shoulders shaking, and then he straightened, wiping an imaginary tear from one eye as he walked over to Claude.

"Ah, you are much more entertaining than you give yourself credit for, captain," said Chance, slinging an arm around her shoulder. "You are definitely worth the company, I'll say that much."

The next hole involved a windmill and much swearing on Chance's part as his golf ball kept bouncing off one of the fan blades.
