Neither did Cai for that matter, but that was less out of a concern for the property and it's owner and more for the safety of their own body as the two greens began to fight right in the midst of the candidates.
~..........~
"No kidding!" So much for taking progressive changes slow! Blues could produce as well as bronzes, women of all colors led weyrs, Pay and respect were being equalized! Ja'line might just write home to her parents about this one! Good only to be married off her arse! Shaff not even that! The moment she'd left their company they'd blown her entire dowry on a firelizard egg! Not that she wasn't proud as a strutting wherry over her little bronze but that wasn't the point! She was a greenrider of Second Wing and with how things were changing she could aspire to be even better. To prove all of them wrong.
From what she could gather by R'soua and B'ren's reactions, her class might just be the ones to do it too. Ja'line grinned, grateful as she'd ever been for her friends and classmates. Things were going to get real interesting here soon.

"Hu, they really like that thing," C'tis said as much to himself as anyone else as he watched the greens fight over the silver cane head. He hoped they didn't maim any candidates, not out of any personal empathy but because any one of those kids might be the partner one of Malcarreth's hatchlings needed. Betweenings didn't happen too often yet sometimes they did and he did not want to see one of those dragons down there vanish into the void forever.
____________
Re'ka laughed; "Maybe later! It's good to see, hu? We need more big dragons coming up." The time weyrlings had bronzes among them but they'd be blue sized or so, unable to fill the role of modern bronzes in a wing. How had the 4th Passers flown she wondered? It had to have been different with the sizes being so different, right?

Fight as One growled and wrested the remains of the cane from Debonair’s maw, the green ripping it free after a good half-minute of wrestling and snarling. Turning her back on her sibling, she scarpered off the sands with it, dodging around candidates like some sort of mad people-shaped obstacle course.
The green set it down before Bereck and then backed off a little, cocking her head to one side to see if he would pick it up. Whether she simply wanted to wrestle him for it wasn’t clear.

"Hah!" Cai barked as the Fight as One green succeeded in not only removing the damaged cane from her sister's jaws but returning it to it's rightful owner. They'd turned around, back to the rest of the clutch to watch the results unfold. Bereck had bad luck with hatchlings after all, even well intentioned ones.

Oh perfect, another sharding dragon.
As the green approached him Bereck remained very carefully still, wondering what the shells she wanted from him. When she set down the head of his cane at his feet he blinked. "Ah... Thank you?" He wasn't entirely sure if she actually intended to return it to him or if she was going to do something if he tried to pick it up. "Why don't you go along and find your rider? I'm sure they're waiting for you," he waved his hand at the children, "over there somewhere." Please just leave him alone, he had already had more than enough shenanigans for today.

As Fight as One moved along with the cane head in her maw, Qyprenna's eyes followed her. She blinked when the green stopped at Bereck, head tilting slightly. Was she bringing it back to him, or was she just going to take it and run off with it again, as the other dragons had done? The candidate couldn't help but hope the hatchling was trying to do the healer a favor. Both Lightning and Debonair had put him through enough, and it was clear that he wanted a break. When Bereck said for the dragon to go off and find their rider, Qyp turned her attention back to the other candidates. She blinked again, looking out amongst her peers, while wondering who the Fight and the other hatchlings would pair up to.

Fight As One stared at Bereck for a moment longer, absolutely inscrutable, then turned tail and trotted off, following (approximately) the line of his gesture. She paused briefly to allow a white-robed candidate to lead her off of the sands and towards the table of meats, the rainbow glow of Impression in her eyes fading after a few moments.

As Fight as One bounded off with the cane and Debonair sprawled in the sand the No Such bronze gave a soft snort and started forward again, his blue eyes now completely intent on a pair of candidates who had been together since the beginning of the Hatching. He did not hasten his pace as his eyes turned to rainbows but he did let out a soft croon as he drew close to his chosen rider.

Well thank the stars for that. As the green hastened off to bond Bereck reached down to pick up the head of his cane. Tried to reach down. He winced and straightened up again. "Get that for me would you Nash?" If he just left it there no doubt some other fool hatchling would come and take it - maybe the green who had paraded it around for so long - and he didn't want to summon his firelizards in here right now and so while he hated to ask he was a bit short on options.

Fight as One toddled off with one of the candidates, clearly eager at the idea of meat and getting fed. Raising a hand, Qyprenna couldn't help but wave as she watched the little girl go off. It was at this same time that the bronze male also found the rider who would be his -- the serious and calm Cai. A brow quirked at the dragon, but then all Qyp could do was shrug. They'd probably be a good match, maybe. She didn't really know Cai all that well.
After No Such had found his rider, a realization came to Qyprenna. Oh, shard it! A lot of candidates were already finding their dragons already, and she couldn't help but look around at the happy pairings. A bunch of them still hadn't, however, including Jemi and herself. The candidate's gray-blue eyes fell upon Jemi, if only just briefly, before she looked back at the sands. Debonair still hadn't found her partner, and there were a few eggs still left to hatch.
To Me, My Dragons caught her eye in that instant, and Qyprenna's mind raced. What if Jemi impressed, but she didn't? As her mind raced, her stomach whirled, and all range of emotions seemed to hit her at once. She felt dizzy, almost, but the last thing she wanted to do was sit down. No -- she wanted to stand, and do her best to see if she would find a partner like the rest of them. It was her biggest dream, after all.

Satisfied that the green was doing the right thing, Cai turned around to face the remainder of the clutch. They suppressed a smirk at the Debonair's fit. Really was a stolen, broken cane that much of a deal when they should be trying to find their bonded? Though the green had been through the canidates already. It was possible there wasn't one for her down here. Impressions from the stands, or betweening was a nasty alternative and one Cai wouldn't wish on the dragon, but she certainly wasn't doing herself any favors sulking like that.
Once again though, Cai found themself staring down a dragon as it paced sedately towards them. Unlike the blue before him though, the bronze did not seem interested in play. There was intent there...then a brush against Cai's mind. Alarms went off in their head and reflexively they grabbed Jemi's arm, thin white fingers digging deep into the sturdy presence of their companion as an explosion of emotion overtook their mind.
~Come Cai, enough of those fools, I am Laufeth and together we shall be glorious. ~
Their hand grew lax on Jemi's arm as they reached out for Laufeth. Their handsome, impressive, perfect dragon. A beautiful specimen of his species. Blinking distant eyes, Cai tore their gaze from Laufeth just long enough to look once more on Jemi. "His name is Laufeth." They breathed. That sense of overwhelming power was back and this time accompanied by the silk soft and deadly whisper of their new lifemate's voice. The whirling rainbow settled back into a calm icy blue as the regarded the taller woman that His held such attachment to.
With little more than that Cai left their friends side, their long legs matching the pace set by Laufeth as Cai led them both back towards the tables where those who'd already Impressed were learning to feed their charges. Cai rested a hand on Laufeth's neck, his warm hide soft and slick and ever so slightly sticky.

Down on the sand Debonair finally gave a heavy sigh, sat up, and started to groom herself in a manner not dissimilar to an embarrassed cat; nothing to see here, she totally hadn't cared about that thing anyway.
As Debonair recovered her Cool more shells cracked and more bonds were made. Perhaps most notable to a lot of people were the two bronzes who emerged on after the other from adjacent eggs, stretched themselves briefly, before heading off in opposite directions to find their bondmates.
This left but one egg on the Sands, the distant To Me egg. A long last it wobbled, cracked, wobbled a little more, and then spilled brown onto the sands, only the second one in the clutch and now quite clearly the last. He was a handsome fellow, darker on the back than on the belly save for a little marking on his chest, but as he clambered awkwardly to his feet he did not look especially thrilled. The hatchling snorted, gave himself a shake, and then took a better look around at his surroundings. When he laid eyes on Evmeth he gave a small bob of his head to her and then, a few moments later, to Malcarreth up on his perch.
With what he appeared to consider proper procedure observed he started to toddle towards the candidates, rather less graceful than some of his clutchmates had been.

“Least I can do for fellow time riders,” Sarai sang and nodded before taking the meat roll with a glad grin. “Thank you kindly, breakfast is good.” She bobbed her head at Esre in thanks and looked out. “Things are changing and I think I sort of like this new time. Even if they don’t follow charter.” Sarai started to gnaw the roll, pensive in thought. Vespeth snorted, landing on a perch, the small green radiating irritation and humphed.
Ra’fe sighed and sat down by the group, taking the roll with a quiet nod and smiled slightly, watching the clutch. “It is going to be an interesting time to live in, that is for sure.”

The very last egg to hatch was a brown, and he was quite a handsome one. Qyprenna watched him as he looked to both his mother and father and gave them a nod of his head. Awww! How sweet of him. She smiled when he did this, and allowed herself to also look at Debonair again. Two other bronzes had also hatched out of eggs, going off with their bondmates after Impressing.
Well -- this certainly was turning out to be quite the clutch! Not one bronze, but three, along with browns and a plethora of blues and greens. People would surely be happy at how everything turned out.

Nash was beginning to get the impression that Bereck was dragon bait. A blue stole his cane and then a green brought it back in some sort of weird game of keep away and pass the baton. Didn't seem to be doing much more then staring though.
And there she went. Nash moved forward at the prompting and scooped up the cane handle, rolling it once in his hand before handing it to Bereck. “This seems pretty broke, do you want me to get you a temp one?” The hatching seemed to be wounding down and Nash could run pretty damn fast.
--------------- ------
Jemi gave a soft surprise grunt as Cai gripped her arm, moving towards the redhead in a confused, what and paused. Ooh. She glanced towards the bronze, waiting and then Cai who fingers were growing lax and smiled . "Laufeth is a good name." She gave Cai a gentle pat on the back and watched them toddle off, bond partner in tow.
