"Ohh," Mimsy gasped, hand over her mouth. Her eyes were wide, with amazement rather than terror, and it appeared as if she was awed to silence. She might have been content to stare at the creature. picking up characteristics and observations and theorizing until it was too late - had Robert not told her to stay.

"Stay?" she asked, frowning. "No, you stay! You...you're supposed to...to listen..."

But he hadn't. Not even kind of.

Her arms dropped to her sides and and let out a very long, very frustrated sigh. What the hell? Where had she gone so horribly wrong? She took several steps backward, eyes locked on the creature (really, there was nowhere else to look).

Someone was asking about the bioluminescence - the newcomer to the division, Mimsy realized. Oh, what promise for a new lab partner! And there was a vacancy!

"It can occur from protists, and appears to create an illuminated shoreline, much like this," she explained, very cautiously moving towards Jack. "The group of protists that this would be is dinoflagellates: the color and appearance are right, and they do tend to be marine plankton..."

She tilted her head with a little hm.

"Do you, by chance, have any insight?"

As the huge thing slogged closer in the water. its steps shaking the ground, Noah lost his nerve and bolted up the beach. Sand, unfortunately, was difficult to run in, and he came very close to faceplanting.

It might have been his imagination, or just a warm breeze, but it sure felt like the creature was breathing on him, and Noah found his stride with a surge of adrenaline and an undignified squeak.

He didn't turn to look back until he hit more solid ground further back; even then, he knew better than to look, because that was how you got munched in the movies, but he couldn't help it. If he didn't look, his curiosity would kill him just as dead.

It seemed to be out of reach. Noah wanted very much to collapse onto the ground, but something told him that he really, really shouldn't. Was there any reason that thing couldn't come up on land? He looked uneasily back towards the complex that housed Deus Ex Machina. Could it hold up against ... that? And if so, how?

"What is it?" he asked, directing the question at nobody in particular, because he had no idea who would know.

Another question caught Mimsy's attention, and she glanced in the direction it came from. A new one! Replacements abound. She smiled pleasantly and skipped out on the waving, just in case it flagged down something much larger. That would be unfortunate.

"Ah, the short answer is...I don't know." But she was not very good at short answers. "Based on previous observations of similar creatures, I would presume that it is either FEAR-based or Insanity-based, and that there is a high chance of a negative consequences from coming into contact with its direct proximity."

She shrugged.

"Or an extraterrestrial lifeform. As much as it pains me to say, your guess is as good as mine, er--my apologies! I didn't catch your name earlier. My name is Mimsy."

"I'm Noah Andersen," Noah replied, giving the girl a distracted smile. If he'd been able to see her more clearly, he would probably have looked, but as it was, it was dark and there was a very, very large anomaly taking up most of his attention. "What's fear or insanity? I'm really, really new," he added hastily, because she'd said it as if he should know this already and he was, accordingly, sort of embarrassed that he didn't. "Like, not the definitions I know already, right, this is something else."

His mind began to recover from the initial burst of fear. Mimsy, Noah, Insanity. Insanity, Insanity...He remembered reading some reports about that. Fog and grayness and statues and one division assistant. Some form of disease affecting only Fear based particles, something about destabilizing their structure...Reminded him of HIV in a way, incubating and morphing from within. Whispering. Gray and gold and sometimes blue, but always always always gray. Bioluminescence, natural or mimicry? Owain was useless in this regard (of course he was), but at least the giant was being quiet.

"No fog accompanying it, light pattern and color unrecognized--so a cryptid of some sort," Jack postulated, muttering fast. "Less outlandish than an alien. Sensitive to the lack of a barrier, beaching itself to catch prey like the orca. Bioluminescence used to attract or dazzle prey? Camouflage was an idea, given how dark it's body is, but why look like stars when one can't make them it underwater? I'd suggest not looking at those at rate." He paused, glanced at Mimsy. "Unless there's an underwater laboratory I'm unaware of? Glad to see you could make it, Noah," he added, oddly congenial.

"Welcome, Noah. Please, no need to explain yourself! Inquiries are welcome." Mimsy tried to put on her most hospitable smile, but her smiles were still a bit clumsy. "The simplest way I can explain it, hm. Imagine that fear - the emotion - could manifest as physical entities, structures, and creatures, and that it could then gather more mass from essentially 'feeding' on more of that emotion. FEAR is what makes up all of that, and Halloween, if you are familiar with it." She paused, then backtracked. "The location, not the holiday. Damage to the cores of those entities, which hold information similar to our DNA, creates a corruption, which is capable of spreading. That corruption is Insanity."

Somewhere close to one year and six months ago, she probably would have thought this sounded so crazy. How far she had fallen. Risen? It was hard to tell in this backwards world. She listened carefully to everything Jack had to say, and took one very slow, steady breath before she spoke, lest she blurt out the overwhelming desire to work with him on a project. Right now. Somehow.

"I do not intend to dissuade you from your theory, and am certainly open to new paths of discovery, but I feel the need to mention that I have yet to find a cryptid that is not related to FEAR; there have even been several that bear uncanny resemblance to cryptids popularized by online subcultures." She cleared her throat and tried to move on from that thought. "There is an underwater observation post, which I believe is inaccessible at this time, and the bioluminescence seems oddly misplaced...unless its primary focus is nocturnal attacks above-water? Nonetheless, the lack of fog does seem indicative that it is not Insanity. I awoke directly after a creature formed from Insanity destroyed most of the island - I would hope that does not occur again. If this is FEAR-based or otherwise, we might have a fair..."

As she trailed off, she fished out the phone that she still habitually carried in her pocket, and stared with great disappointment as she remembered that it probably had no battery remaining.

"I think that we need to spread word of this." There was a new urgency in her tone, her eyes darting back towards the center of the island. "Immediately."

Noah listened intently, taking in new information with a rapt and ravenous look on his face. He looked down at Lazarus. "Then the weapons are fear - uh, FEAR too," he said, mostly to himself. "Are they subject to Insanity too, then?"

He shook off that question and listened to Jack thinking aloud, and Mimsy's response. "If it's manifested from human feelings it makes sense that there'd be creatures that looked like ones popularized by groups on the internet," he said. "Since finding other people who believe you saw what you saw would strengthen your belief and convictions." He frowned out at the giant thing. "Is this a new thing? If it's a new thing why's it happening now? If it's not we should go find someone who knows what it is so they can tell us how to deal with it," he finished with a slight tremble in his voice.

Unfortunately, there was just a slight problem with speculation and it came in the form of this .

"I would have assumed they were all Fear-based," Jack answered with a shrug. "Either us or them, no? Not unless they could be mixed." And he mentally cut off Owain who was about to explain that they had also perused something about "JOY", distracting him with the fact that they had something to look back into later: the underwater observatory.

The explanation was nice, at least. There was only us much he could infer from reports.

The creature was starting to move again; Jack swallowed and backed away, the earth shaking with every step the thing took. "Much as a warning would be appreciated I'm sure, if there is any power left to security--" On cue he heard the island-wide alarms begin to go off with shrill urgency. "There we are. Well, let us continue this discussion at a later point, hmm? Nut up, Noah, we got ourselves a monster to catch," he said with an odd smile. "If the miss would accompany us?"

Time to jog some more.

"Potentially," Mimsy mused, chewing her lip. "I am not personally aware of any instances that I recall, but it is not at all out of the question. And you raise a fair point. I have strayed away from studying that topic, so all knowledge I have of it is very minimal. If you happen to encounter anything interesting, I would gladly trade information with you."

Just as she was about to explain the variety that correlated with other holidays, the alarms began to blare. Apparently, they had done just fine recognizing the threat by themselves.

"I would be happy to return to this discussion at your leisure," she assured him. "Of course I will accompany you two to the main gates. Please do try to ensure your own survival, above all else."

She wasn't kidding. At all. It might have sounded a little like a joke, but there was not even a hint of a smile left on her face. She didn't want to find replacements for her replacements, because that was just ridiculous.

As she hurried towards their meeting point, she paused just long enough to pluck one discarded rainboot off the inland edge of the shore - then another, several steps away. She folded them once and tucked them carefully under one arm before continuing on, idly wondering how they would manage to save themselves this time.
