It was, apparently, dance or get attacked again. Jordan attempted an awkward shuffle towards the edge of the ring, but his way was blocked by claws and darting, giggling shadows. He shot a death glare in Jerry's direction.

Oh, bother. Jerry's face paled as the shadow audience erupted around them, his fingers faltering on the strings as the banjo drifted up.

He glanced from one frustrated, enraged comrade's face to another before steeling his resolve.

He could do this. He strummed in answer, stepping forward to accept this challenge, his fingers flying over the strings and frets of the little instrument.

Give them what they wanted. Give them what they wanted and MORE and then blow them all up while they were cheering.

The ukulele shifts and changes and Jerry's arms are moved by an invisible force. He draws a bow across a violin and the tune soon changes into something angrier, a terrible challenge. The shadowman appears across the clearing, singing and dancing with manic rage.

The OOC

Robert's skill allowed him to easily keep up with the dance because I have to go to work now.

If your hunter doesn't keep up with the dance, they get trampled by the hundreds of wild shadows!

Roll 1d20!
If your hunter rolls less than 10, they fall and get knocked out!
If they roll a 18-20, they escape the mob!

Jerry, however, does not get mobbed, and instead is ringed by laughing shadows egging him on to keep playing. Jerry needs to keep up with the music and not falter!

Roll 1d20
If he rolls less than 13, they strike out at him, causing 10 damage!
If he rolls a 19-20, he defeats the other players, and the shadows go silent and still once more.

He was just getting into the groove of the song when the invisible instruments backing them up suddenly shifted and changed and he felt his hands moving of their own accord to follow along. He gasped, taking that moment to glance around the circle, his stomach churning. Candace lay beneath the shadows, silent and still.

Not again, he could feel the panic rising. They were going to die here, ended by biting off more than he could chew, from his own enthusiastic idiocy. There was a rush to his head from the absinthe in his system as he felt the ukulele change, his hands lifting, his stance instinctively changing to accommodate, and he was pulled back into the moment, and his brain caught up just in time to saw down on the sawing bow in a wavering note as the Shadowman sang out...

His eyes narrowed. Whatever was forcing him to move let go, leaving him on his own to catch up.

"I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul 'cause I think I'm better than you."

His eyes met the shadowy face of the enraging figure, exhailing sharply. He wasn't as familiar with violin as he was with the other instruments... but for the most part, math was math and he prided himself on his ear for tune.

And he knew this song.

Rhythm. Remember to breath. Think about your fingering, one miscalculation and a sour note could kill them all. He sawed away, fingers flying over the fingerboard, measuring full steps and half steps and sharps and neutrals and sweet and bitter. He ignored the shadows clawing at his friends, grabbing at his own feet as he stepped toward his opponent.

It was as though the green fairy herself was flowing through him to guide his fingers. The pads of his fingers would have been bleeding if Roar hadn't been concentrating on keeping them durable. Horsehair broke, whisking past his ear as he twisted with the music, dancing of his own accord.

The song pressed on. No one else had fallen, the shadows hissing at his veracity until finally he tore through the final chords, the notes ripping through the shadows like a sudden burst of light.

He wobbled, panting heavily as they curled away, and the dance was stopped.

The song reaches its climax and once again the Devil finds himself defeated and banished by the power of a simple man of pride and soul. A hush falls over the clearing and the shadowman bows with a laugh. "For a human you aren't so bad." The creature and his shadows disappear between one breath and the next, leaving with only a softly hissed promise.

"Until we meet again."

The ukulele returns to its original state for just a moment, and then crumbles to dust.

In the months that follow, music sometimes fills the dark corners of the island, wild and dangerous in its frenzy. Those who approach find themselves drawn into a dance that leaves them worn and ragged with a darkly rhythmic tide pounding in their skull for days after.

Jerry wobbled, starting to run after the shadows as they receded.... for a human...? The violin in his hands shuttered and swelled with a plink, his ukulele back and he gave a sigh of relief- but just as he tried with trembling fingers to give it a familiar strum in greeting, the thing crumpled in his hands. "No- NO YOU b*****d-!"

Two more steps, and the booze caught up with him. He coughed, gagged, and made his way over a tree for a moment.

"Jerry - " The rest of Jordan's irritable remark got cut off by Jerry's stomach rebelling. Jordan turned away, trying to ignore the sounds, and went to check on Candace instead, kneeling down next to her and gently shaking her shoulder. "Candace?" She didn't look badly injured, just unconscious; still, a knot of guilt started to gather in his stomach. He'd called her in, and it was on him if she'd gotten really hurt.

Rep took a long satisfying drag of his cigarette and exhaled a little calmer than he had been before.

"Well that was certainly ******** something."

Candace looked like she was in trouble, but that was never his problem, that was the mob doctor's job. He couldn't help but feel a little twinge of distaste at the fact that Jordan felt it was his.

"Did... did you hear me?? I... I drove them off! I don't even really PLAY violin..." Jerry panted as he came up for air, wiping his mouth on his sleeve as he wobbled toward them, beaming proudly at himself for a performance that had saved them all.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 02, 2013 3:54 pm

Candace groaned when she felt something touch her shoulder. She had been starting to come around and the touch did help, but she was angry. She had told him twice to put that goddamn thing down.

She rolled over and half-heartedly swatted away whoever was touching her. Candace winced and rolled onto her side a moment after laying on her back. That hurt. "I'm fine.." Her back just felt like it had been trampled on by a hoard of riverstomp dancers.

The sound of Jerry's voice reaching her ears made her want to be unconscious again.

"Goddamnit.."

Jordan breathed a sigh of relief as Candace stirred and swatted weakly at him. "You want to go to the infirmary?" he asked.

He gave Jerry a flat look and said nothing about the performance.

Jerry deflated a bit at Jordan's glare, his brows furrowing. "Hey... hey now... I saved everyone, didn't I?"

"You ******** endangered everyone by being a complete ******** idiot. You just fixed it is all." Rep said, dismissing Tracey and standing up straight, sauntering over to where Candace lay with a lazy trail of smoke in his wake.

He gave her a critical look and waved a hand dismissively. "You still look fantastic darling, you'll be fine."

PostPosted: Mon Sep 02, 2013 4:14 pm

"Maybe.." She rolled onto her stomach again, sighing unhappily. "I think I just need a place to lay down. My back is killing me." Candace would get up in a minute. Promise.

She ignored Jerry.

"..Thank you, Rep," Candace chuckled and waved a hand. Of course she still looked fantastic. She sighed and turned to finally look to Jerry with a frown. "It all could've been avoided if you'd listened to me, you know." She should've crushed that damn thing under her boot before Jerry had had a chance to pick it up.
