Only thanks to Nero's mighty sense of composure and self-control, developed through years of stage performance and running from the gendarmerie, did he not fall right over as Glen shot beneath him.
The tricks you can pull when you're small! But then everyone was a little bit small to Nero.
He readjusted his helmet, squared his shoulders and - ducking as low to the ground as his frame would allow - skated as fast as he could. Obstacles became a blur as a new sense took over so that he either swerved to avoid them or they simply exploded out of his way. Behind him, Lagoona and Deuce were finally catching up although Deuce was slightly singed on the snakes.
They followed Nero only a few seconds behind on the Tentacle Bridge

Marceline was suffering from a fit of giggles, a by-product of her adren-uhh-line rush from the race. Regardless of whether she made the team or not, she was happy to have tried out. While attempting to swipe a glob of green slime off her shoulder -- a futile effort, as she was pretty much covered in the stuff -- she scanned the crowd for her friends. Dashner had vanished somewhere... But she spotted Rory and Ronan in the screechers; she waved enthusiastically, still giggling as her adren-uhh-line steadily dropped.
She looked down at her clothes, tinged green, and wondered if the stains would come out. "Yep," She sighed. "A shower is def'nitely in the cards right now..." She glided towards the locker doom and snagged her iCoffin before going to clean off the muck.

Anne barely made it through the ice despite being from the Arctic- where there were shards of ice, EVERYWHERE. She spun onto the Tentacle Bridge, quickly formed a snowboard from the ice that shot out from her fingertip, and slid across the surface. A wave of tentacles waved this way and that, but she went right under them.

Glen was the first to reach the tentacle bridge and the huge, squid-like tentacles rose up and whipped about, reaching out for him. He swerved one, ducked a second and jumped over a third! Then two more, one on each side of the bridge rose up and both targeted him at the same time. Only then did Glen pull out his iCoffin/wand and aim it ahead at the offending tentacles...
"Dnuob rehtegot!"
And the tentacles immediately wrapped around one another in a giant knot. They whipped around, up and over, and Glen happily started jumping rope/tentacle mid-bridge and reciting;
"Hey my name is Glen!
And I'm on SKRM!
Gimme Ryder and Anne!
And we're a team!"
And then Glen ended his 'performance' and took off like a shot, slightly in the lead!

Nero grinned and zoomed past the tangle of tentacles, hot on Glen's heals. It was only fair that after demolishing a passage through the ice field, Glen now return the favor on the bridge.
Up in the distance Nero could see the rapid nearing finish line, all he had to do was be faster than Glen and whatever the final trap was. Deuce and Lagoona fell in line behind him, ready to face whatever the maze threw at them.

Glen's Red Ghoul buzz was at an all-time high as he was able to slightly maintain the lead over Nero who was fast closing in on him, thanks to those long, powerful legs!
Behind Nero, their respective teammates were struggling around one another in the effort to pass and gain the advantage for their team! Deuce and Ryder maneuvered and weaved around one another as they attempted to catch up to Nero, alongside Lagoona and Anne who were neck and neck!
The narrow tunnel then suddenly opened up into the end game -- the finish line now in sight! Glen pumped his small legs even harder when geysers of flames shot up from the ground, causing him to yelp in surprise as he skidded around one and then bent backward in a Matrix position to duck under a hotizontal jet of fire that shot out from the wall!
Glen then slid between two more vertical columns when the final surprise erupted and the final column of flame right at the finish line turned into a strong shower of...
Glen swallowed hard -- WATER!
He shot a glance back over his shoulder and saw Nero within arm's reach and the Anne and Ryder moving to catch up with Lagoona and Deuce who had just managed to get ahead of them! Glen turned back around and knew what he had to do -- and he was going to hate every single moment of it!
He dashed forward and right into the spray of ice cold water and instantly melted into a puddle of green goo ala Glen, right in the skaters' path!

Nero wove around the flame geysers, cringing at the smell of burnt hair and hoping he wouldn't need to get a crew cut when this was all over. If he made the team he was definitely going to have to wear some sort of fire-proof hairnet to meets, no matter how humiliating it might look.
He spotted Glen ahead of him and sprinted with the last of his energy to close the gap.
7 feet...
4 feet...
2 feet...
He could make it, he just needed to get around Glen...
Glen, who suddenly disappeared in a shower of water! Where did he go?! Did he shoot up to the finish line so fast Nero didn't even see it?! How much Red Ghoul did he drink!?
He looked around frantically, but the horn hadn't sounded for someone crossing the finish, so where....
WHAM!
Nero hit the ground hard as he slid into a puddle of thick green goo.
WHAM! WHAM!
Everyone behind him hit the floor as well, the slime carrying them every which way. They had no control over where they went! Deuce veered wildly to the left and hit the wall butt first. Lagoona slipped to the right, spinning like a top. Nero's momentum drove him forward. He was very glad for his goggles because he head was covered in goo.
He slid across the finish line, the horn sounded, the crowd gasped. HE WON! Nero won! Didn't he? Why wasn't the crowd cheering? Why wasn't the announcer saying he'd won?
"Someone call the referee over!" Clawd shouted, jogging over to Nero.
Clawd helped Nero pull himself back onto his feet. Nero took off his helmet and goggles off so he could see. He shook his hair out, relieved to find out only the tips of a few braids were singed. He needed a trim anyway.
"Well? I won, didn't I?" asked Nero hopefully, trying to keep the grin off his face but unable to resist puffing he chest up a bit.
"We're...er, not sure. Ghoulia needs to make the call."
"What? Why? I crossed the line first didn't I?"
"Er, yeah, kinda....but you were covered in Glen at the time."
Nero looked down are the helmet, dripping steadily. All the goo seemed to be trying to ooze back together. It burbled something that might have been, "did I win, did I win?"
"...gross," said Nero, dropping his helmet in the rest of the puddle.

Finally Ronan managed to settle back down and watch the last heat, when his icoffin buzzed. It felt good to be invited out, to be accepted and included. He hadn't really expected to make friends so easily. These Monster High Boos and Ghouls were clawsome.
He typed back a reply. "Certainly. See you soon." He glanced to Rory but whatever he was going to say he was distracted by the crowd's screams. He turned back to the screens and gasped, had.. Glen just melted!?
"Is that.. normal?" he asked, clearly somewhat alarmed by the turn of events.
He didn't have to wait long for an answer as Nero crossed the line covered in gloop which started to reform. Ronan pulled a face, that was particularly gross.

Ascrema clapped her hands over her mouth at the green puddle on the screen. "Oh my glob..I hope he has a spell to fix that.." She bubbled through her palms, "That what happened to my great uncle; we had to let him go.. There was no solution.. Well, besides what was left of him." She said sadly..
"Oh look!" Pointing in the direction of the goo that was beginning to take shape again, "I wonder what the judges will decide?" She asked, tilting her head to Ronan. If all SKRM games were as exciting and nerve-racking as the try-outs, she'd certainly make the effort to watch! However, all the giddiness and drama had worn Ascreama out and she'd absent mindedly eaten all of her snacks!
She craved a crispy scab salad and some heart-y soup! "Want to grab some grubs when this has finished?"

"Wait wait wait...GOO?" Anne said as she slid around the mess and across the finish line. She'd never seen anything like it. "Is he alright guys? GUYS?" WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIS FACE?" She intended to whisper but shouted out loud instead.

Referee Ghoulia Yelps slowly skated towards the situation. She looked at the participants all covered in Glen. There was a definite streak of bright Oz emerald green leading from the water geyser to the finish line.
Ghoulia held up one arm and blew on her referee whistle.
*twee....eeeee......eeeee....*
"Uuuuuuughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgh uuuuuggghhh." *
The crowd erupted into tremendous cheers!!!!
*Translation: "Since both Nero and Glen technically crossed the finish line at the same time, this match is declared a tie!"

As the tryouts came to an end, the students gathered in groups to chat excitedly about what they had seen. A hush came over the crowd, though, as the Headless Headmistress, astride her steed Nitemare, trotted onto the course.
"Students and friends of Monster High, thank you for coming to support the student bodies during tryouts. I know that Coach Clawd has his work cut out for him deciding whom to appoint Team Captain and who shall make the team. I want to thank each and every student who participated here today. You are what makes Monster High such a great school to be a part of."
The Headmistress pulled off her head and held it high so that everyone could hear her better.
"And now, as we file out and prepare for the school year to begin tomorrow, I say to you this: Be Yourself! Be Unique! Be a Monster!"
The crowd erupted into cheers and chants of "MON-STER HIGH! MON-STER HIGH!" as everyone filed out. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.
