[Rochelle]

Homahjays.

She winced when the big one again ran off from Bereck and into the Stands of all places. What poor b*****d was going to Impress without even putting themselves out there? She felt a smidgen of pity but not enough to keep track when a flurry of movement caught her eye.

Carltis. On the ground with his big arms thrown around a very small hatchling, the blue. Rochelle squealed from her place amongst the girls and, this time, literally bounced. It hurt annnnd she quickly stopped but the intent mattered. She knew he wanted something bigger, an atypical, but from the wipe of his eyes and that big stupid grin once he pulled back, she didn't think he cared all that much.

"Shells, yes!" She said with a bright smile of her own. The glasssmith blew him a (probably over enthusiastic) kiss and waved him off. "And congratulations!"

But, for once, she did not feel as confident as she sounded. There were so few left, unmoving even, and the odds quite against her. Others Stood for years before Impressing and this just her first time... He'd make new friends in Weyrlinghood or training or whatever it was called. And with a quick glance at the stands that instantly became a gape of disbelief, she'd be losing Aleck too.

Oh. Well.

For entirely new reasons (no one wanted to be left behind by their two best friends), Rochelle turned back to the eggs with hopes of Impressing.

Renio

Whooping as another boy Impressed the lovely green, Renio was beginning to feel like his mind was being tugged in several different directions. There were so many things to look at, to pay attention to, and he wanted to talk about them all. He didn't want to miss out on the antics of the wild blue, or miss any of the faces of the newly Impressed, and her certainly didn't want to miss out on new eggs hatching. His eyes bounced around the sands, going from the loud blue, to the remaining clutch, to the feeding tables, and back. He noticed the new arrival to the sands, a cobalt blue, and spared him a second glance to admire his color, but another scream from the loud blue drew his attention away.

The final cracking of the Pacifist egg stole his attention yet again, as the murmuring of the crowd speculated on the color of the dark dragon. Renio's voice joined the crowd, whispering excitedly to those surrounding him. His eyes were solely on the 'black,' and he didn't notice the cobalt blue fast approaching. "Man, that's a big black! Biggest one I've ever seen. I bet those Revolutionists are gonna be mad they didn't steal that egg. Blacks are supposed to be small things when they're babies, but this one is a monst-"

Anyone who had been actually listening to his words and watching him would have noticed an abrupt pause, and a rather stupid look on his face. For the first time in a long while, Renio was completely silent - but his mind was filled with words, and the most beautiful ones he had ever heard.

go!>

Tears swelled in his eyes as unbridled love, trust, and hunger swirled through his head. His legs jerked forward, carrying him towards his dragon. "I'm coming, Draildyth," he managed to choke out, just as he skidded to a halt in front of the blue and knelt before him. Tears now running freely down his face, he enveloped his bonded in a hug. "I-I can't believe you're h-here and you're real and y-you're mine," Renio sputtered, continuing to embrace the dragon.

go?!>

Nodding, Renio wiped an arm across his wet face and stood to his feet. With a hand still on Draildyth's head, he walked towards the feeding tables with his dragon beside him.

Siano grinned as the pretty blues found theirs. Hatchings despite the odd injury were magical things, never more true then when a rider bonded with theirs.

The circles within circles green paused to watched as the pair of blues from the other clutch Impressed, a rather pleased light in her eyes. Chirping to herself she gave her head a shake and moved on towards the candidates, only to come to a halt again at the centre of the semi circle. Humming to herself she swung her head slowly back and forth, a few times with her eyes open and a few times with them closed as though she were both looking and listening, and presumably feeling too.

Where was that critical voice?

That mind that stood out from the rest?...

It was not here, not amongst these ones. Trotting forward once more she pushed her way carefully through the ranks of candidates, ignoring the feelings of desperation radiating from some; they were not Hers, none of these who had touched her shell were what she wanted. What she wanted was... what she wanted... that critical clever mind on high. Slowing to a halt once more the green raised her head and looked directly at Nyasa where she stood in the Stands.

And with that the Sands were empty of dragons. The noise around the Hatching sands fell to a murmur and the eyes of the spectators turned onto the three remaining eggs; two in Hyweth's clutch and one in Sunnath's. First it was the turn of the crimson rider, purely because she had the greater number of eggs to break open. The candidates were rounded up by the candidate master assistants and brought up close to the Misdirect egg and the Raring To Go egg; weak atypicals wouldn't manage the trip all the way from their eggs, across Hyweth's sands and out onto the edge of Sunnath's where they had been placed.

The hush gave way again to a rising and falling susurration, as people craned forward and whispered their final speculations to their friends. Only time, and the strike of the crimson rider, would tell what those still little eggs held.

Darsha watched the newest impression with eyes raw with longing. The little green seemed so happy to have found Hers... and then the candidate looked back to the unhatched eggs.

They were all being herded towards the two eggs remaining in the crimson's clutch. Two, two precious little eggs that held either duds or atypical dragons. Darsha had found herself greatly admiring the beauty of the atypicals, and she desperately hoped that the inhabitants within those eggs were alive and well and merely needed a little bit of help. Her stomach was in her throat as the time to crack the eggs grew nearer.

J'len hesitated only for a moment before walking up to the Raring to Go egg. She lifted her shovel--and paused, again. What if she hurt one of the hatchlings? She gave it a few hesitant taps before giving the egg a study whap.

"Go on then," she muttered. "Go find your rider."

She hoped J'nes would be there soon.

The little dragon that managed to push its way out of the shell J'len had weakened it was crimson, crimson like a glorious fiery sunset. For some moments she lay on the sand, looking around at the word with bright clear blue eyes that occasionally pulsed with weary grey. Exhausted. Already exhausted. Nevertheless she forced herself to her feet, clearly as determined as she was vivid, and started to take wobbly little steps towards the tightly packed cluster of candidates.

She knew hers had been at the Touching; if they weren't here now she was going to kick some serious tail!- Woops! The hatchling collapsed half way between her egg and the canidates and lay there on her belly looking very tired and even more disgruntled for a few moments before heaving herself upright again. Where were they? She needed to feed, and soon!

Rochelle winced from where she'd been smushed between two very bony girls when J'len thumped the shovel against the egg. She had never watched a Hatching before - not one that she could remember and Rocham sent her away before she'd been old enough to Stand. Hearing of the breaking was one thing. Being smushed between two people she didn't know like a sandwich and watching someone strike an egg was something else entirely.

At least the baby was pretty, and alive, even if not it's strongest. She sucked in a breath, watching it - her - with wide rapt eyes. She was so small. So determined. Absolutely lovely.

It was red! So very, vibrantly, gorgeously red! Darsha stared at the little crimson, her expression as full of naked hope as the rest of the girls who stood around the little hatchling. She longed go over and help the little dragonet to her feet, she looked so tired and determined all at once. But... no! The dragon was back on her feet and wobbling her way over to the candidates. Darsha held her breath, waiting to see what would happen.

Ahmenna had made her way to the feeding area with Phiroth. Neither she nor the little green were interested in who else was Impressing. After all, they would find that out within the next day or two when lessons started up. She walked with her back straight, Phiroth following with as much dignity as possible.

Phiroth picked up speed and bowled through several weyrfolk and drudges to get to her bucket. She rumbled and looked back, not feeling bad one bit for her actions.

Ahmenna smirked at her dragon's actions. That was the way to get things done!

The crimson wobbled forward, stumbled a little and then stopped with her head raised and cocked. After a few moments of stillness, save for the slight tremble of her limbs, her head swung around and her eyes locked with Rochelle's.

With one Impression made with merciful swiftness it was time for J'len to break open the Misdirect Egg.

Relieved at the quick Impression, J'len moved to break the next egg open. There was less hesitation this time; the crimsonrider tapped the egg with her shovel once more, and gave it a whap. She took a step back, smirking at her dragon. Are you pleased?

She had best take care, Hyweth advised. Kibeth will do well. She is strong. Like I am.

Cai, in a fit to Do something, began to pack up the healing supplies as she watched the last green Impress. With the candidates moved around the crimson's clutch, she could just barely see through their groups the rider as she approached with a shovel. The crack of the egg was audible and there was something in it, besides the thwack of the shovel, that set it apart from the sound of the normal eggs. She couldn't place what it was though, maybe even her own imagination.

"Shells..." She grimaced as the crimson hatchling finally fell from it's shell. They were weak. She was surprised. The mother looked healthy and strong enough but was that really how they started out.

Cai waited to hear the keening of dragons as the grey eyed creature collapsed for the second time. If this was all someone ever saw of an atypical...she might then understand why they wouldn't allow them within the ranks. Cai had seen them as adults first though. Even the hatchling silver, the first she'd met, had shown a vast improvement on what she was seeing now.

This time the little dragon the uncoiled itself from the egg was a deep midnight black. The small hatchling pushed himself slowly to his feet, aware of and husbanding his meagre strength. Hungry red eyes scanned the candidates... and he did no more than that. Either he could see all he wanted to for now from where he stood or he hadn't quite worked out how his legs worked yet. Whichever was the case he gave nothing away as he scanned the line of desperate hopefuls. Two chances left; only two. Frantic minds reached out to him, pleaded with him to choose them and no other.

The black blinked, and took a single pace forward with his head held high and his wings poised neatly by his flanks. All of these minds yearning for him; he could take his pick, claim the one that best suited him and his purposes.

Darsha sighed as the crimson impressed to another girl, pushing her disappointment back ruthlessly. There were still two eggs left, and the Misdirect egg was being cracked and...

It was black. It was a glorious, beautiful, inky black. Darsha found herself smiling at it, watching him watch the rest of them. Oh, she did love the black ones.
