"I don't much care for dragons," She said, hastening to continue. "Although Berath is a very nice dragon. Usually their riders are absolutely unbearable. We give warnings about when Thread will fall. Times. All of it. They just b***h about how we don't give them enough time or how dare we let it come."

Alina grumbled and curled down closer, her fingers wrapped up in his shirt now. She wanted to. She could. That was all there was to it. His last comment caught her by surprise, her sandy haired head tilting back to look at him in confusion.

"A white? Why a white? We're we just talking about color bias and how it isn't awesome?"

Bereck gave a rather tight smile. "You just said it; Thread. White riders don't fight Thread. That's a bias I could get behind for Aleck."

She quieted. The discussion easily could have become about hypocrisy and Bereck but she did not want that argument today. Or ever, really. And she had no right to be telling him what he should or should not do with Aleck; even if they'd raised him together, someone didn't have the right to tell a parent how much they should or should not worry about their child. It wasn't as if Aleck wanted to Impress and Bereck kept him from Standing. He supported his sons lack of desire. That was okay.

"Ah." She fiddled with the hem of his shirt, lips pursed in thought. "We can chalk it up to him being like me in that respect."
PostPosted: Wed Dec 12, 2012 4:24 pm

"I'm grateful regardless," Bereck mumbled with a small shrug, trying hard not to think about Aleck and Thread. It had been bad enough when he had known - thought - that he would at least be in the air too should Aleck Impress. At least then he had felt as though maybe he could look after him to some degree, keep an eye on him, and had known that he wouldn't exactly have had time to worry anyway. Now though he would just have to wait on the ground, wait and worry and hope that his son wasn't brought to him screaming in agony. Hope that a tall bronze rider with fancy knots didn't come to tell him that he son wasn't coming back at all.

Part of him wanted Aleck to Impress, to find that perfect bond, but the idea of him fighting Thread made him feel sick. If it happened despite Aleck not standing... well he didn't see how he could feel unahappy - of course he'd be happy - but he knew it would set a ticking clock in his mind, fears for the future, things he couldn't protect his son from.

Taking a deep breath in through his nose and letting it out slowly through his mouth Bereck gave Alina a tight squeeze. "Let's talk about something else, shall we?"

Alina waited. She leaned and she cuddled, her hand tightening in a soft squeeze. He stayed his quiet self until he breathed deep and slowly breathed out in a fashion she knew much too well. It was the conversation ending sort of breathing he did when frustrated or worried or just didn't want to think anymore.

And she was right.

The Starcrafter kept quiet herself, eyebrows furrowed as she thought of smething to say, tried to say. eventually she sighed and leaned a little closer, eyes going to the abandoned bit of wine.

"I don't know what else to talk about," she admitted. The entire thing had her at a loss for ideas and that sucked. She reached over instead, briefly removing herself from his hold, onlyto return with her mug of wine. Alina sipped at it as she re-burrowed herself against him.

Bereck sighed slightly and sipped at his own wine, as much at a loss as Alina was for a new subject. Eventually looking around the room in order to avoid a potentially awkward look from her gave him one.

"I like your office," he said, making a little gesture at the space in general with his glass. "Is it new? Almost everything was rebuilt after the Revolution, wasn't it? Did you lose much of your equipment? Notes and so on?" Maybe not an entirely happy subject but at least something that they could discuss, and something that was in the past not the future.

"Mm? Oh, thanks. Yes, it's all pretty much new." She made a face and tilted her head to press her nose against his temple. "It was all replaced quickly enough, with it being all Threaded and things. Worst week was getting all of the paperwork remade. Double time. Exhausting."

Alina grumbled against him. "One of the reasons I felt okay seeing you. If horribly tired, at least I had an excuse to be in the infirmary. Figured you wouldn't turn a tired 'Crafter away, history or not."

Bereck made a little grumbly noise in return but not a cross unhappy one, just a sound for the sake of answering Alina's. "Well, of course not." He gave her a squeeze. "If I had been vertical I could have given you some medicinal strength klah, or if you were really tired some of mine. Every so often one of my new apprentices will sneak some on a dare and spend the next few candlemarks either bouncing off the walls or just shaking. Soon teaches them not to touch my things, or imbibe anything they're unsure of though so I've never made a great effort to prevent it."

Good; subject definitely moving on now. Bereck finished off his wine and started to relax again, more quickly this time probably thanks to the aforementioned beverage.

"I will never again touch your klah. I can only imagine how strong it's gotten in the last twenty years." She shuddered, pulling a face of disgust. Once. She drank his sludge once because it had been a late night and he offered and, no. Never again. He squeezed back, fingers curled tight against him. "Honestly, I don't know how you managed to function on that."

That klah had been so strong she still had to shake her head in an attempt to get the taste out. Alina kept her face tucked in close to his, one of her arms rising to wrap around his chest, fingertips resting on his shoulder for a light hug and a drape. She started to speak when a soft, tired 'cheep!' sounded from her desk.

Alina glanced over to see her little firelizard trundle from his roost in her desk drawer. He scooted his way to the ground, little legs lifted high as he started to walk towards the couple with continued cheeps and churrs.

"Oh. That's him. The little brown."
PostPosted: Thu Dec 20, 2012 2:34 pm

"Oh?" Bereck's brows rose with interest as the brown appeared and he watched with interest as the young creature made its way down the desk and across the floor. "He looks good," the healer nodded approvingly, "are you oiling him at all?" Firelizards didn't need it as much as dragons of course - there was no comparing the growth rate - but without a faire to groom with their hide did still need attention. This little fellow's looked good, at least from where he was sitting.

Giving a chirp of interest Vena Cava hopped from her perch down onto the floor and trotted towards the other flitt; though she was older they were about the same size, and doubtless it wouldn't be long before the brown far outstripped her.

Leaving the firelizards to greet one another Bereck turned back to Alina and quirked a little smile. "It has become rather more potent as I've taken on more and more commitments. I don't think I'd function well without it, at least not in the routine I used to have. If you thought I was hooked on the stuff back then you'd probably have been appalled to see me six months ago... but it worked; no arguing with results."

"I've oiled him. Not today, though. It's been a working day." She grumbled again at the sharding red ink on her charts and lists but ended up just melting against him with a sigh. "He's smart enough, though. Takes all of his naps in the desk and doesn't bother me at work."

the nameless brown rocked back on his limbs, head cocked at the other firelizard as she headed his way. He churred and stuck his head out once she was close enough, sniffing at her. A little brown tail wriggled and he chirped back at her. Friends? Yes? FRIENDS!

Alina smiled and kissed him again; she liked it when he smiled, and liked to kiss him when it happened, and so she did. This entire thing was comfortable, the two of them fitting together even after years and things happening. She liked it.Loved it. Wanted it for the last two decades. (And knew it horribly obvious, with the mental gushing and attempts at words outloud with the intensive cuddles.) "Dare I ask what your schedule was like or what you're plotting to do with it now?"
PostPosted: Thu Dec 20, 2012 4:06 pm

"It was... efficient." That was the best way to describe it. Bereck closed his eyes to focus, and a moment later Marrow fluttered across to pick up the wine bottle, which he ferried over to Bereck. "A three hour block of sleep, and three or perhaps four twenty minute naps through the rest of the day and night. It was amazing the work I could get done when most people were asleep. As for now... well I suppose I intend much the same. I can keep up the same level of work I was doing before, have the same time for Aleck and Berath and make time for you, because I won't have wing duties anymore," he said as he poured another half glass for himself and proffered the bottle to Alina. He missed work. It was like an itch he couldn't scratch, it was restlessness and anxiety and... wrongness. Working was what he did, was an integral part of his identity. He felt lost without it.

While the humans talked Vena chirped and sniffed the brown in return, sending him a feeling of 'greeting!' and 'groom?'

His sleep schedule had not been exactly what she expected (or at all). Alina's brows pressed together, head still turned to watch him. Even though she took the wine bottle, the Crafter didn't move to pour herself more, instead keeping her eyes on Bereck.

"That doesn't sound very healthy, Ber." She hesitated when she spoke. He'd been at it for twenty years and critisizing it probably wouldn't go over well but if he could tell her to not wave her food about, she could tell him what she thought of his sleep schedule. "I know we both lived on five hours of sleep and klah before but that was twenty years ago. You've really been able to keep that up?"

Skreeee! The little brown flopped onto the ground in front of Vena and stretched out like a puppy. His legs sprawled out, little claws wriggling and clicking. He sent back 'greeting!' and 'yesssssssssssplz'.

Vena gave a happy little squeak and tumbled down with her new friend to snuggle and scratch itches.

Bereck watched the firelizards for a few moments, taking an absent minded sip of his wine as he pondered how best to respond. She hadn't been criticizing him, not exactly, so he didn't feel defensive; he just needed to explain. "I know it's not normal," he said eventually, "and I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone else because it is hard, but it was worth it for me. The things I was able to achieve because I didn't spend eight hours a day asleep and didn't spend as much time socializing as others...." Bereck looked back over at Alina and shrugged. "It made me feel fulfilled. I miss that. I want it back."

What could she say to something as baldly stated as that? Work made him happy. His constant. Even though he'd been pulling it off for years, Alina worried. She busied herself with pouring herself some more wine to hide the flash of fretting and put it back on the ground.

"I'm not sure what I can say to counter that," She said slowly once she'd settled back, wine to her lips. "When do you think you'll be going back to full time?"
