Sparrow thumped a long hindpaw on the ground, eager to start the race. He wanted to prove that his first day victory wasn't a fluke; that he really was runner material, and that he wasn't just doing this to show off.
Well.
Maybe a little bit just doing this to show off.
At the starting yell, he hurtled down the hill with wild aplomb. It looked challenging, but he could do it!

It wasn't the best start he'd ever had- or even a good start by anybody's standards- but at least he wasn't tripping over himself. Focusing, the cream-colored buck dashed through the grass, taking the hill as best as he could.

He fell back to the middle and lost speed but taht was okay. It was only the middle of the race. He'd proven her could rally. He was hoping for a rally.

Ahh, the wind in his ears- that was more like it! The buck had to smile as he approached the large black rabbit who marked the turn around point.
But this had been the easy part. The hard part was still to come.

The last portion of the hill wasn't as easy as he thought it might be, and he tripped a little as he hit the bottom. Scrabbling to turn around, he began to hop back up the hill.
