Shanty hung back for the moment, not particularly keen on Mudlark catching her amused grin. Oh, how she did love her darling sister's inimitable Kin skills! And it looked like a funny sort of fellow she had picked too, with his strange charred sticks. What was he doing, staring at them like that? Wasn't he blind? She kicked back on her heels and relaxed for the show about to unfold: this was going to be entertaining.

At the sound of the Kiokote's words, her face fell once more. Oh. Right.

"I'm n-not a singer," she started again, slinking back to Keep True and pressing close to her side for strength, "I c-can't make my v-voice come out right in front of others. O-only Thaw has heard me," a wretched, apologetic glance at the kindly buck, "a-and it was because the f-first time was an a-accident. I c-can't join your t-troupe."

...But the flicker of wistfulness did pass over her face as she delivered her verdict to the tantalising scene of dancing Acha in her head.

"Don't joke around child, I'm far older than you know. And yes this little rascal will go with you, I imagine he likes pretty little does much more than old men like me. Look he's already cozying up to you."

True to his word, the songbird seemed to puff its chest out with pride, replying Stories' whistle with his own little chirp of satisfaction. Thaw watched the way the acha's eyes lit up like a child presented with a forbidden treat. Her expressions arched across her face, clearly readable.

Suddenly, the colorful Kiokote that had been hanging around burst into the conversation. Thaw sent the Kiokote a look of puzzlement, what was this preforming acha troupe he was going on about? The confused look on Keep True's face, coupled with Watch Me's declaration and Stories' own expressions (which ranged from scared to apologetic to wistfulness to disappointment in a matter of seconds) told Thaw everything he needed to know. It seemed Stories still suffered from her crippling sense of confidence, or lack thereof, to be more precise.

"Nonsense girl, you're no long a stuttering child. You can sing as well as anyone, better than most in fact. So come on, pucker up some courage and sing."

Focused intently on the Acha’s face, Watch Me did not miss the wistful look. Triumph gleamed in his eyes. But he would give her time. He hadn’t brought so many great performers to his side without a bit of skill for social manipulation. “Ah, that is such a shame.” He heaved a great sigh. “But I would be happy to have you among us, even if you choose not to sing. The troupe is always open to lovely Acha like yourself. But, I would say to listen to your friend, he seems like a good judge of talent.” Not really, but he wanted Story on his side, so best to keep her buckfriend on good terms.

Keep True had kept quiet for the most part but now she pressed her nose against Story’s cheek. “I would like to hear you sing.” She murmured quietly. But perhaps it is time we went home…” It was a selfish desire, but she wanted to take her darling sister away from Thaw and this loud Kiokote.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Thaw's declaration almost swayed her - it usually did, her kindly benefactor able to coax a tune more often than not - but Keep True's familiar caress brought the real world thundering back: the world where she did not sing, could not, was no one, nobody, that any Kin would lay eyes on for whatever reason. Not the furtive, magical one with Thaw where she worked her voice like a songbird's, twisting melody with tumbling words - nor the frightening (alluring) prospect that the strange Kiokote had offered.

She burrowed into the safety of the real world, hiding her eyes in her sister's shoulder, "Yes, let's," she sighed.

But she broke away a little, for a moment, trotting over to nuzzle against the old buck's neck, "I'm sorry I couldn't sing for you today," she whispered, curiously unbroken, "thank you so much for your wonderful present. I will cherish him well, my dear friend, have no doubt; he'll fly free on his fire without," and so having slid into the silken voice only the intended recipient of these notes had ever heard before this day, she named the gift that was hovering beside her sister with the occasional curious chirp, "the next time we meet, I shall spread my own wings - and sing of the fire within."

With a last sparkle of gratitude in her sky eyes, she tripped back to Keep True, already pointed homewards. A three-note whistle and she was set to leave, nodding hesitantly at the Kiokote, then much more warmly at Thaw: "F-farewell," and the jeweled tones had already faded back into the ragged rasp.

Truly, she thought that they were exceedingly kind, but the amount of kin seeking to interact here at this gathering was overwhelming for er. She was used to her solitary walks, contemplating the smoky contents of her dreams and her occasional meetings with The Killing Moon. He expected very little of her and complimented the quiet burn of her heart with the soft warmth of his being. Before this gathering of kin, she had never encountered so many kin in her life outside of her dreams. Even there, large gatherings were rare and they were often in cases of mass chaos where there was no need to interact, only to survive.

Still remained Killing Moon's brothers, one who seemed uncomfortable and the other not very pleased, or if she searched her dreams, perhaps a little mocking. Unsure of what to do or say, Ember looked searchingly with her ash eyes at Killing Moon, trusting that he would know what to do. she wanted to get to know his family better but she didn't know how to slip from strangers to friend. Even family was a foreign concept. It had been so easy, so natural, with Killing Moon, so much so that it had not tested her ability to interact. Now she was out of her depth, a flickering flame in the cold unforgiving wind.

As if sensing her fragile state, The Killing Moon gently moved to nudge Ember's shoulder. The simple touch conveyed calm reassurance and while he regretted leaving Left behind, especially considering the other's dismay had not been missed, he considered the family meet-and-greet done for the day.

"Come. We should find somewhere to help out."

With one final nod at his brothers, he led Ember away to some peace and quiet. He would make it up to Left with some quality time later.

Instantly, she relaxed, grounded and steadied by Killing Moon's touch.

Ember felt a flair of discomfort; she did not mean to pull her dearest friend away from his family. Killing Moon's quiet, comforting presence however, and his surety of his course settled her guilt and she went with him, hovering close to his side with no words needed to be said.

She cast one last look back at his family and they burned themselves into her memory as surely as the ember in her chest burned at the flesh of her body and the matter of her soul. They were not to be forgotten and though she turned away now, ash eyes focused on the buck before her, she would continue turning over their presence and their souls for days to come till they met again.
