Len looked thoughtful, his tail swishing back and forth. Fortunately he had been warned ahead of time about a little boy named Andarien.
"Ah! You must be the Andarien who can see the magical auras of others am I right?" he finally asked with a snap of his fingers.

Andarien was astonished.
"Are you one of those people who knows everything about people when you talk to them?" he asked suspiciously. "Because I've heard of people like that, and Nana and Ada know people like that ... and I've never seen you before."
Earendil chuckled and put one hand on Andarien's head. "Or perhaps someone from the family told him about you," he suggested to his son.

Len laughed and nodded in agreement with Earendil, "As much as I love my job, I wouldn't be doing it if I could do that! No, your great-grandfather called me up and warned me that one day soon you and your family would come in here for my wares."
He motioned for the family to follow him to the back of the shop.
"Mainly because this is very customized and personalized work, so we'll need a bit of time to test and talk about what it is that you require."

"Test?" Andarien asked as they followed Len towards the back. "If it's about all this stuff here, I don't know much about it so I won't do very well."
Earendil let Andarien walk with Len and walked with Lin and Miyuki instead. He was just amused by all of this.

Len chuckled at that, "It's not a test of knowledge, it's a test of ability. I need to know how strong your Sight of Magic is so I can make lens that suit just you. Otherwise it might not help at all, but a test is a small part, there are also a lot of questions, but I might be asking your parents rather than you."
Since he knew that some observation skills came with time and often parents didn't tell their children what to expect because well... it was easy to forget to.

Andarien blinked. "But I can answer questions," he said hesitantly. "Can't I?"
"I'm sure he just means that he'll ask us if there are questions that you don't know the answer to," Earendil supplied with a smile. "Don't worry too much about it."

Len nodded in agreement, "Yes, see I was also told you'll be traveling, so I need to take that into account. There are many things I need to take into account before I can start making them."
He lend them to an office that had a chair and all manner of lens, along with a contraption that was attached to the wall and could be raised or lowered. It looked like someone was supposed to peer through it, but a part of the insides were missing.
"I just need you to sit here," he patted the chair, "And your family can take the extra chairs in the room."
He sat on a stool that had wheels.

"Okay," Andarien agreed, climbing up into the chair. He spotted the machine attached to the wall and his eyes grew wide and filled with excitement. "Hey! How does that thing work? Can I see maybe after the test?"
Earendil was only becoming more and more amused by this experience.

Len had to chuckle, what a curious boy and how refreshing, "It's very simple, I can explain during the test. We'll need it later to see what type of lens you'll need."
He rolled backwards to a filing drawer and opened it. Rummaging around until he took out what looked to be a set of thick black narrow plates kept together by a screw. It reminded Lin of those colour swatches used for painting.
And while that was what these were based off of, instead of colours each plate at a rune that was kept covered and contained by the one over it. Each contained magic of a variety of strengths in increments. While magic was very difficult thing to measure, this was the closest thing to it.
Rolling back over to Andarien, Len explained, "I'm going to need you to do this without your goggles, I'm guessing you use them to keep things dim right? I'm going to show you these plates one by one slowly, and you'll tell me when to stop when you feel it's too bright for you to look directly at them okay?"

Andarien settled into the chair and gave a kind of a half grimace. "Okay, but I think it'll be better if you make it so I can't see them at all."
He lifted his goggles from his face and set them on his lap, then looked at the ring of plates. He squinted a bit at the top plate - not because it was bright, but because compared to a moment ago, when he'd had his goggles on, it was brighter.
"Give me a second," he muttered, blinking a few times to adjust to the brightness of the room. Then he took a deep breath and looked back at the runes. "Kay."

"I'll keep that in mind," Len nodded.
He didn't like to patronize children, but he did understand how sometimes they might be bothered by their Sight so much that they might not see the potential good in it. So he often it was a question he posed to the parents as long as they understood what is involved. Though he understood why some might not want to see anything at all.
"Right," Len nodded.
He slowly flipped through the runes, the ones after ten was getting into the range of those who used magic a great deal like Kara or Daemon.

By the time Len reached the runes after ten, Andarien was squinting, but he kept nodding for Len to go on. This was still not bad at all compared to how Lancaeriel looked to him.
That was impossible to look at.

There were only twenty plates in all, it was very rare to meet anyone with that much magical power unless they were a creator (though in Gaia one never knew).
He did note that Andarien was squinting but it was clear that it wasn't all powerful.
"I'm reading to the end Andarien okay? Once I do, I need you to tell me how do-able the last plate is, and if you know of anyone who is brighter than that, and by how much."

By the mid-teens, Andarien's squint was much more pronounced, and when the last plate was done, he rubbed his eyes.
"That last one was really bright, but there's someone who's even brighter than that," he told Len. "But maybe ... maybe if you give me something so I can't see this one, then it won't hurt to look at her!"
His tone was hopeful now. He liked Lancaeriel, he really did. She was nice, and she was smart, and she was really really friendly. But he just couldn't stand to look at her, and Luk's goggles barely made her tolerable.

Well Len was dumbfounded, he had heard of people that bright, but they were very rare and few inbetween.
"Well I guess we won't have to go onto the next test then, normally I would use that," he pointed to the contraption attached to the wall, "To see which lens to give you while still being able to use your gift, but if you know this person then I'll just have to give you the strongest lens I have. It will certainly make everything ten and up to this one look like a faint line around the person, and how thick or bright that line is depends on how much magic they have, but anything below that you won't be able to see at all. So I hope, at the very least you'll just see a faint glow around this person."
Though it certainly made his job easier for that was for certain.
