"Believe it or not, I've won a few competitive eating contests," she confessed around her last mouthful. "Some of the prizes are pretty good, but I stopped entering because of all the after-party jokes. You think people would be more mature, but something about eating 15 weiners in a minute brings out the teenager in everybody."

"See? See what I mean?" she giggled. She wiped her mouth with a napkin and tossed it in a nearby trash can. "Totally not worth the free food and gas money."

"but it's funny." he argued, "and I'd take the jokes if it meant free food and money. they don't actually mean it." he looked out into the distance, as though thinking about it.

"will do." he said, mocking a salute. he got back to work, and fed the birds, reptiles, rodents, and finally the fish. he cooed to them, appologizing for taking so long after cleaning their cages.

Katriel took the largest of the dogs and wrapped their leashes around her arms. They took off running--almost sprinting--down the street. They veered into a park and covered it in no time. They ran to the edge of town and back again. It was good to run with a bunch of big hairy brutes, all shoving to run beside her. Back at the shelter, she gave them water and then went to see to her next job.
