He was still alive. Delta Twelve was sure something terrible would have happened by now, but it hadn’t. Hearing the hooded figure urging him to finish the course, he scowled and looked up at him. “Always? As if you’d know!” He thought nothing else of the suspicious comment. It was to be expected---Twelve wanted to finish crossing the chasm before thinking about anything else. “Interesting?” he repeated. He had no idea how things could get interesting, but he continued hopping anyways.

When he heard Z9's prize, the shock caused him to stop. What? Wide-eyed, Twelve stared at the hooded figure. What? Whatwhatwhatwhat?

Zeta Nine was sure that her mouth had fallen open a bit, but she was too stunned to take much notice. She collected the medkit that was being handed to her and stowed it away with her other one. Nine didn't really know what to say. Frowning behind her mask, she thought about what had been said. Well... it was kinda true that he never mentioned any specifics about how you won the pendant. She felt angry at herself for being deceived in a way yet again. That joy of winning was slipping away (at least she got some form of prize), but she still had a chance at winning the pendant.

"Uh, thanks. But the pendant was my main aim. Care to enlighten us as to what we're being judged on?"

Staring at D12, who seemed to be taking all of the time in the world, and at the same time, amusing her to no end, the Theta twisted back to glance at the cloaked figure as it spoke, her back straightening with slight indignation. Cocky b*****d, she thought in minute amusement.
"I know, I know," She waved both of her hands at him, as though telling a rather stubborn dog to sit. "Tests, island of death, Lost meets Survivor. I get that. You're just decorating it in fancy words." Shifting her weight into one side, never losing sight of the sharp, poisoned demeanor that had shifted into the limelight, the girl laughed caustically, her tone scathing and amused. Perhaps a bit disappointed. "Cryptic as ever, boyo. I figured there wouldn't be much tell-tale answers, but hey, one can dream, can't they?" She smiled grimly under the mask. "Well lets hope you're doing a good job at your role, 'else everyone will be disappointed, huh?"

Turning as the Zeta was presented with a medkit of all things, the Theta's mouth nearly opened into a laugh.
"Tease," She muttered. She had the feeling that had she ever known the Reaper under the cloak, she might have punched him soundly in the shoulder for leading them all on. Raising her brows at the reactions from all around, the girl was surprised for all of one split second. And then she realized this was exactly like the Reaper to do something as annoying as this. She vaguely recalled his momentary death act, the way he'd popped right back up with some annoyingly cheerful words. Now he was here, presenting them all with medkits and cryptic words to boot. If she wasn't so intent on making him stay for once, she'd have punched him by now.

"I have to agree, care the enlighten us, oh wise one?"
Her caustic tone mixed with mild intrigue and chill. She took a step forward, her heart pounding in her ears. Now what were they being judged on? Her arms slid over her chest, crossing over each other as she stared on like an expectant child, waiting for her just desserts. Who won first place then, boyo? She wanted to ask. But then she bit her lip, not wanting to turn him off from giving a direct answer. No, she would wait. Or at least try.

After regaining his composure, Twelve sighed and continued his trek across the chasm. “Me three. I’m dying—uh, not literally—to know what you judged us on.” He observed the remaining players. Assuming that nothing drastic happened to the islands, there would be four survivors at the finish of this game. Curiously, Twelve felt someone staring at him and he looked around the group until he focused his attention on Theta Two. He raised his arm to questioningly wave at her, but she had already directed her attention somewhere else. He frowned.

As he arrived at the last island, Twelve managed a weak laugh as he jumped off and finally landed on solid ground. He sheepishly placed a hand behind his head. "That took longer than I expected!"

The figure shrugged. No harm in telling them. It wasn't one of the things he'd been warned against revealing, since the judging had been up to his own discretion.

"My game," he said, "was testing if you could, or would, work together. Obviously you all made it because you were focused on your own survival. But could you work to ensure someone else's survival as well? Would you be able to work as a team? Some of you could. Others... well."

It had been an interesting viewing experience for him. Watching them decide whether they would attack others, help others, or do nothing but focus completely on their own progress. The human psyche was a complex thing, especially when put under the pressure that every living human on the island was under... but that was the point, wasn't it?

"Let's just say karma was at work," the figure dumbed it down for them and shrugged. "And the person who came out of it with the best karma was Eta II." The shiny blue pendant was tossed their way.

Even now, E2 was still asking after his comrade. Some might cry unfair advantage, since the Etas were from the same squad. But they hadn't been the only ones. There'd been several Thetas, Zetas and Deltas. Teaming up wouldn't have been a problem - if they'd thought to do so. Perhaps it was because this game seemed more of a solo exercise than his previous attempt. Ah well. He shouldn't have to spell out everything - this was a test of character, not of just following the rules, after all. It hadn't turned out so badly. More deaths than he'd been expecting, but also less people attacking or defending their fellow humans than he'd thought.

Several of them had asked about those who fell. The figure huffed a sigh. "People who fell are, unfortunately, very dead. Well, except for this one, I suppose."

Stepping aside, an unconscious figure was revealed. His cloak had somehow been hiding it from view. There, on the ground, lay Eta V.

"This one was the first of you to try and help someone else. And despite her early fall, she still ended up with better karma than most of you."

Had the figure left his post at some point to catch the falling E5? No one had seen anything like that. Was he that fast? Able to teleport about? Simply that magical? Let's just chalk it up to the mystery of the island - nod slowly and accept it, children. Back away from the possibly crazy man and all his talk of karma.

"So there we are. One pendant and one medkit given. One person saved. The big question now is if you can survive to the final day."

(( - Zypheris/Eta II receives the pendant.
- Diseased Candy/Zeta IX has a new medkit - two extra uses on top of whatever you had left.
- Everyone who fell, apart from Eta V, is dead. Please move to the Dead Like Me thread for hanging out in the lounge and your eventual solo post.
- Poke-mattix/Eta V, you passed out during the fall and wake up here on the ground.
- Everyone still living has exactly the same amount of HP they came into the thread with.

About to do another post explaining the rolls, karma, etc. for those who are interested. ))

(( Game Mechanics

For this game, there were basically two values I was keeping track of in the rolls - safety points and karma points. Safety points were to see who would survive or fall in the end-of-round random events. Karma points decided who would eventually win the pendant (or in the case of E5, who had the second highest karma rating, be 'saved' from the fall).

Safety Points
These reset every round, so when the next shaking/rock-throwing/etc began, everyone was on an even field.

Everyone started off with the same value - I used 20 as a default, but it could just have easily have been 10 and some people gone into minus points.

If you rolled to save only yourself, your roll was added onto your default. If you rolled to attack someone, your roll was minused from their value and you lost half your roll from your own value. If you rolled to protect someone, they had your roll added to their total and you lost half the roll from your own total.

So saving only yourself guaranteed a higher score than hurting or protecting anyone else. But if your 'self' roll was smaller than someone else's roll to hurt you, you could still end up in trouble.

And, of course, rolling to save only yourself got you ZERO karma points.

Karma Points
Every roll to attack or protect someone else earned or lost you karma points. This got a little more complicated than safety points.

If you chose to protect someone, you earned the amount you rolled. If you attacked someone, you lost the amount you rolled.

If you chose to return the favour, either protecting or attacking in response, you earned or lost half of what you rolled.

If you continued to protect or attack the same person, for several rounds during the game, your points had an accumulative effect. Zephyris ended up with the highest score because E2 was constantly working with E3.

... And you guys thought I was just updating the map every round xd ))

( LMAO <3 what an interesting game *U* <33 /endlessly amused/ congrats, zyph! *U* <3 )

Theta Two watched as their final member leaped to safety, her hand lifting slightly in a curious wave. She'd never met one of the Delta's before, though what harm could come from waving, really? Dipping her head, she let out a slight laugh.
"Welcome back to solid land, boyo." There wasn't much time though, really, for idle conversation, not when the Reaper was speaking up once again. She listened avidly to each word, breath stolen, heart muted in her throat. She could feel it all settling into understanding, her brain slowly churning over the words and explanations. Her head slowly turned, gaze fixed on the chasm that had swallowed Bones and Kirk whole. The needle like agony returned to her chest when he announced that they were dead. They were really gone. The only two people left that she'd really known on this island. Thyme and Fedora... she didn't know where they were, or if they were even still alive either. Words bruised her mind like fresh wounds, sticky and hot and ever burning. Parting words, falling words.

Something hot and warm clouded the corner of her eye, but she fought it away, still as the warm emotions flooded into her, only to be washed out just as quickly by the freezing sting of determination. Keep going, he'd said. Remember what you have to do. They would both punch her if she dropped to her knees now and sunk under the weight of temporary defeat. Jerking herself forward, Theta-two adjusted the sack on her shoulder and turned away from the chasm. What had once been a need to track down the Reaper and play his games had quickly gone cold. She was beginning to find that with every passing hour on the island, her emotions and her moods, her needs and goals were changing ever quickly with each decision. It was like internal whiplash. The girl struggled to make heads or tails of it, but in the end, did it really matter how they changed? In the end, they all pointed towards you've got to keep going.

Laughing slightly at the Reapers last words, Theta-two turned, her body cold and mechanical, brushed with sweat and uncomfortable as ********. She moved away, a hand raising slightly in the air.
"See you later, alligator." She chided back to him, and the rest of the group as she moved away from the chasm. As far as she was concerned, she was done here. She didn't want to be here. Not anymore. This was Bones and Kirks graves. The girl didn't want to spend her time with the ghosts of guilt and remembrance knocking on her door. The familiar buzz startled her out of her daydreams, and when she pulled out her phone, the text message scrawled itself brightly on the screen, illuminating her line of vision. Her fingers moved deftly to reply. And then all was black.

She wasn't leaving. She was gone.

(( OOC: Catching up OTL, thanks artificial! And thank you Kalindara for the game too! ))
Wait. The reaper told him. That frustrated Eta II.
He clenched him fists and paced around impatiently, waiting for Delta 12 to make it across.
He was a fool for hoping that those who fell would still be alive, yet the reaper had refused to give a flat out answer the first time. Maybe there were exceptions, but Eta II was still less that optimistic about the odds. Still, he refused to mourn just yet until he received confirmation that Eta III was indeed....gone....

The reaper had started to speak again and Eta II immediately channeled his attention towards him. He was stunned to see that Zeta IX was handed a....medkit? He was pretty sure that the winner i.e. the first person to cross would be getting the pendant.
Oh, technicalities
It couldn't be denied though, that his interest and curiosity had been heightened with the turn of events. They were being judged it seems, but on what?
Delta 12 had finally made it. It seems that he heard what the reaper had said too.

Eta II pulled a face behind his mask. What? You can't exactly fault us for putting ourselves first in these circumstances. Not when only 13 can get off this god-forsaken island. Sure, he had helped Eta III from falling the first time, but it was for naught in the end. Eta II was still bitter, and hearing what the reaper had to say just annoyed him.

What.
Eta II was caught by surprise, but he managed to catch the pendant tossed in his way. ..... , he was at a loss for words. The reaper continued, and Eta II's fears were confirmed - III was indeed, dead. Eta II gripped the pendant in his had tightly. It was so bittersweet. He had a pendant now, but that was a high price for it. His heart sagged heavier at the thought that the others - who will be VERY unhappy about the outcome - would now be after him.
And he would be alone.

The sight of Eta V lying on the ground surprised him a little. Eta II did remember choosing to leave him and Beta V and move forward alone for the lack of a better option. Eta V - the timid, insecure and panicky guy he met on Day 1. Eta II supposed it was nice to see him alive.

Eta II made his way to the edge of the chasm and stared at the pitch-black darkness below. A minute's silence for Eta III - make that for the rest of the dead as well. When it was over, Eta II stowed the pendant away in his armour. What now. He wasn't in a mood to do anything - perhaps he would wait for Eta V to awake for now.

[[ 'grats Zyph~ <3 ]]

When he heard the reaper’s explanation, Twelve couldn’t stop himself from bursting into laughter. “Th-That’s so logical and contradictory, at the same time, no less! Everyone is clawing at each other’s throats for a pendant, but there’s no way we’d survive if we didn’t fight in groups.” His eyes began to water, but he blinked them away as his odd fit of giggles subsided.

Twelve watched Eta Two stroll over to the edge of the hole and he followed after him. He glanced at Eta Two before he also stared into the darkness. A hand reached out into the darkness, as if he could somehow grab his friend out of the shadows, but once he realized the folly of his actions he weakly chuckled and curled his hand into a fist. Instead, he reached for his ringing cellphone and skimmed the most recent message. Twelve’s first thought was to ignore the event, but what else could he do instead? He was by himself and he had no clue where to go.

“I wonder if I should try my hand at another game . . . ?” he whispered. He looked over at Eta Two and the unconscious Eta Five. “Are you going to stay or go? You have a pendant, so you have some options.” Smilng, Twelve raised his cellphone to refer to the new task. “As for me, I'll be taking my leave, but if you'd like to tag along I'd certainly appreciate the company.” He began to walk away, pushing buttons on his cellphone and waving at Eta Two. "Let's hope we both don't die, yeah?"

Was...was he dead?

Was this...heaven? or could it be hell, he wasn't sure. It felt more like hell, though...

He could still feel the pain in his back, and the heavy suit that encompassed his body along with the mask that just made everything more uncomfortable. He could also feel the cold ground beneath him. And voices...but he couldn't make them out.

Groggily, Eta V opened his eyes, and saw the familiar bleak sky that was the island. Nearby he could make out the black cloak of the reaper, and a few of the other people who participated....but there were so few...

He got to his feet, looking around and taking in more of the surroundings. He was aware that he wasn't dead, and that somehow he had survived the fall into darkness. As to how he had no idea. But it seemed he was the only person to do so, considering how many was here. He didn't even see the person he had tried to save...

was his efforts all for nothing?

He stood up, feeling a dead weight settle in the pit of his stomach. Eta V recognized one of the people as Eta II, and this was a small comfort to him. It was nice to see someone else from his team was still alright.

As he stood there wondering what he should do, he recalled the cellphone on his belt, and he took it out to read it...

....How long was he out?!?!

He couldn't believe it. Already it was day four. There was only three days left. What was he supposed to do?! How many were dead, how many were alive. He felt slightly panicked at this new information. Sure, he was alive, but what did that matter when he had missed out on two days?!

He took a deep breath, looking at Eta II again and noticing that they had obtained a pendant. He smiled under his mask. While some would think to fight for it, he..just didn't have the heart.

"uh...hey" He said awkwardly to the other Eta. "I'm glad to see you made it..and...congratulations on your pendant!" For a second he worried that the other would take this the wrong way. "I mean...uhh..."

As he talked, he flicked through the rest of the messages, and noticed one of them talked about a "special task" That...was odd..and it looked fairly recent too. Without really thinking, he texted back a 'yes' to the message. "Umm..I don't' suppose you could tell me-"

A sudden bright light blinded him, and for the second time in his recent memory, he was knocked out again

Well... that was a bit of a downer. Not rewarded because she tried to save herself. Well, she was still alive, wasnt she? That surely must be the best outcome of the game. Still, how disheartening it felt to have the prize snatched away from your grasp!

Z9 turned her attention to her new medkit. She had two full kits now and could afford to heal. She took out some bandages and began fixing up the wounds that hadnt been patched up last time. There, good as new.

Flicking out her phone, she found a text inviting her to a special task. Hmm... she had no where else to go now, the majority of her comrades now dead at the bottom of a chasm. Texting 'yes' a bright light surrounded her, nine's senses went crazy, and with a horrible wrenching feeling, she left the game site.

Eta II soon realised he was alone.
Really alone.

The rest had vanished it seems......all after they had responded to their cell phones.
Eta II picked his up and stared at the screen. He hadn't realised that he received two messages.
>>Read New Messages<<

Eta II smirked after reading the first one - well he did have a pendant now, Trying? Yea people died because of that.
Scrolling down, he read the second one. A special test......
He had a pendant already - honestly if these tests were anything like the ordeal they just went through, he was pretty sure that he'd be flirting with death for no reason.
Reply? Eta II hesitated.

Still, he recalled Delta 12's offer to hang around with him. Eta V would be where he was too. Eta II didn't know them too well though - how he did miss his short lived alliance with III, VIII and I.

Perhaps I should take a look at the base camp......just to see if VIII and I are still there.....

Turning around, Eta II headed to the Eta Base Camp - to search for his companions....and tell them of the departure of Eta III

(( Eta II is EXITING to the Eta Base Camp ))
