D pauses to think about your statement. The only thing that struck her as odd was the exchange on the stage... the strange woman.

Do you mean that woman you were talking to when I first arrived?

Although D doesn't laugh, she does smile, your joke making her feel a little better. Once the door is open, she walks in and looks around, taking in her old office. She turns to face you, her face conveys the turmoil going on in her head.

I really don't think there is much of an easy way to put it, so, here goes... I do believe that I have had some pretty serious memory loss and coming back here has ... er, rectified the situation?

Her statement isn't so much of a question, more of a struggle for the right wording.

I don't remember everything yet. Faces, some names... so much happened here. I used to live here.

Kris laughs softly when he mentions the woman that he was speaking to when she first arrived. At first he almost thought she meant Sparks but that was long after she arrived.

Yup... that's what I meant. Would you still consider it unusual if I told you that the woman you saw was not really a woman at all and that furthermore I could make her look as different as I chose... even slightly scary were I so inclined. Perhaps that is something to explain later. Let's just say I have lots of friends. Heh.

He knew that this particular statement was more likely to add fuel to the fire and it would give him an excuse to go on about his hobbies at great length later.

Continuing on, Kris listened to your choice of words. He knew that you had talked at great lengths about your memories here but never with much detail.

Rectified, eh? So does that mean that you remember everything you have lost? If that's the case then rectified is certainly the way you would describe it. However... if you were indicating that being here has only started to restore your memories than coming here has simply been a catalyst to help you retrieve memories.

At this point, Kris almost sounded like a well-heeled academic instructor even though he appeared to be completely unaware of this fact.

That being said... what do you remember now?

D tilts her head to the side slightly.

So, that woman isn't... never was human at all, is she? Did you make her?

She walks around to the window behind the desk and looks out. She continues to speak, loud enough that you can hear her, but not so loud that she can be heard outside of the office.

My memories of who I used to be have come back. What I don't remember is how I lost my memory.

She turns slightly, looking at you over her shoulder.

My name is Nikki. I used to live and work here, made many memories with the people who also used to live and work here.

She turns and looks back out the window, remembering the people who are no longer involved in her life.

When D explains her real name, he can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed himself. He has memories of Nikki but he somehow couldn't connect his memories right now. After a brief pause, he finally speaks.

So then this is... your old office... wow. I mean... that is really something else... it must be some kind of strange feeling to have this room make so much come back to you. I can see why you were a bit... well.. taken aback. If I can help... I will gladly do so...

As Kris tries to put things together in this, he felt almost as though answering the questions about Harmony and Sonata were not as important as handling this.

So... what do you plan to do now? And... why would you pick the name "D". Where did that come from?

I guess I plan on hanging around here until I can figure out what happened. I'm hoping that being here will bring my full memory back. I'm not sure if there is any help for me other than just giving it time.

D turns to face you and leans against the cool glass of the window pane. She crosses her arms over her chest, her face looks worn and older than she really is.

When I woke up the man that was taking care of me after whatever happened was calling me "D." He said I mumbled in my sleep but he couldn't understand what I was saying. When I became aware of my surroundings I couldn't remember who I was or how I got there. I had no memory of anything before I actually woke up.

Kris nods slowly as he takes in Nikki's story. for all intents and purposes, that sounded like a common reaction to amnesia victims. He had read many stories about amnesiacs who were called by a name they had almost given themselves in hopes that it would jog their memory.

As he ponders this, he has a recollection about some of his biology classes in college and he remembers a critical thing about how to help recovery from amnesia.

Well, I am certainly more than happy to hear that you plan on sticking around and I do hope that some of the things around here will help you remember. One thing that might help... I recall from some of my neurobiology pursuits that might help. You see... things like words and pictures are processed on different sides of the brain which is what leads to moments of nostalgia or deja-vu. Sensations and smells, on the other hand are processed on the same side of the brain as memory. Hence why you rarely forget how wonderful a certain meal smelled and when you smell it you think back to those times. Likewise, the way a wall feels on your hand or the way a pathway feels on your feet can remind you of various things. It's a long shot but if there are things that you did often around here such as walking a certain area or smelling certain things... you might try it...

As for your story about the man, I would consider it very accurate. The things you describe are the paramount of most cases of standard amnesia. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends in this world who were trained in neurology but I certainly have plenty of books you are welcome to peruse. If I could offer more to help you then please tell me. I just hope your memories are good ones...

D listens to you talk, very interested in anything that might help her regain her memories or if nothing like that would work, maybe she could forget her past again so she felt like a 'whole' person again. When she speaks, her voice is dry, lacking the happy tones she had previously.

I'm willing to try just about anything right now.

She regains her happiness when you talk about the books and offers you a smile.

I really appreciate that Kris. I'm sure my memories here are good ones. Although, I'm not sure why I left here or what happened after that. I'm almost afraid to regain those memories... I have no idea what happened that was so bad that I wouldn't remember that specifically, but everything else came back.

(( Ack! Sorry it took so long. I keep coming to the Gaia page and then I get sidetracked elsewhere. ))

Kris nods understandingly. He couldn't speak for how D must be feeling but he remembered how much of an annoyance it was for him to even forget something temporarily much less forever.

I don't mind at all D! I can't say I know how you feel exactly, but I can empathize with loss. My resources in this area are rather limited, I only have a few books and such... but you are welcome to any of them that suits your purpose.

Kris pauses a moment as he ponders something and then he takes out his key chain. For a moment, he flips through the various keys he has until he finds the second copy of the key to this room. He unsnaps the key from the clasp and then gently places it in your hand.

Here... this is the spare key for this room. If you have unrestricted access to this room, it will give you a better chance of finding those triggers. Really... try sleeping in the old bed, letting your feet feel the floor where you would normally have walked. You might even try cooking something that you feel you used to like and eat it in this room to see if the smell reminds you. I know it sounds crazy but it could work.

Kris wasn't really sure what else to say at this point so he simply pauses and waits to hear from D.

D takes the key and looks at it for a few minutes. She slips it into her pocket, and looks around the room. When she returns her gaze to you, she suddenly looks older and worn out. She speaks softly with a sincere tone.

Thanks, Kris. You don't know how much your help means to me.

She fishes the other room key out of her pocket and holds it up so you can see.

Should I keep both rooms? I don't want to keep a room that someone else could be using... I mean, I don't want to take money out of your pocket. I'll pay for this room, no problem... I'll pay extra if you want.

D stops herself from rambling further as a light pink color spreads across her cheeks.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to ramble. Can I ask a favor? Don't tell anyone else about this, okay?

((OMG I am horrible at posting lately! It's been way busier than I ever expected. ))

Kris nods as he sees D look around the room and he takes note of her more tired demeanor as many people might respond thusly if they were in her circumstances. He smiles as he speaks with a calm and reassuring tone.

It's my pleasure, D, life is too short to sell people short I think.

At first, Kris almost stuttered through D's name, she had called herself Nikki but he wasn't sure if she liked that moniker or not. As she holds the key aloft, he closes her hand back around it.

Just bring me the key to your old room if you decide you like this one... and of course make sure your ferret know your new location.. heh. I will charge you for only your main room. I don't think it's really right for me to rent it out to someone else.

Kris gently places a hand on D's shoulder, the first time he could remember doing so since he chased her back from the beach. It was a gentle touch that he released just as gently. An almost 'knowing' grin was on his face.

Trust me... I have rambled to you twice as much as you have rambled to me. Don't worry about it. And your secret is safe with me. K?

He changes his posture momentarily and considers the options.

You want me to leave you here? Of course, just make sure you try to care for the rugs here. Just like the other rooms, this is all new.

((Oh jeez! I'm sorry!! I have been slightly busy... having personal melt downs, trying to find homes for, first a litter of kittens, now a litter of puppies. I also am trying to start up a tupperware business as well as run my craft business. And of course putting off finishing school. I will post within the next week.))

I think it would do well for me to stay here, where I used to, and try to bring things back the way they used to be. I'll hang around here for a bit, clean up a little too, get rid of the dust and air the space out.

She slips her hands into her pockets and sighs softly.

I'll empty my things out of the other room and make sure it is clean and ready for a new customer, and then return the key to you. Is that okay?

She looks down at the floor as you mention the rugs and nods.

Of course I'll respect your rules, still. I'm more comfortable barefoot most of the time anyway. And of course I'll make sure my ferret knows to come here. I'd hate for someone to be surprised to find an animal in bed with them in the middle of the night.

Armion struts through the front door and pauses to look around. Seemingly satisfied he nods his head and heads directly for the bar. Upon arrivel he takes a stool and begins to spin slowly as he waits to be acknowledged by the staff.

((I've been gone long enough, now seems like a good time reemerge.))

After soaking in the tub for far too long, Bertie stepped out of the water and wrapped a soft, warm towel around her wet skin. As she secured the towel, she sighed and wondered what she should do next. She had been inside the water for so long that it had turned cold and now it caused her to shiver slightly. That drove her to get dressed quickly. She put on what looked like essentially the same clothes as before, but not exactly. What she was wearing before was pretty dirty, so she would need to wash most of it before wearing it again. So, she slipped on a clean pair of black pants that hugged her body, a silk pearl shirt with a shimmery quality, and a brown vest that appeared identical to the one she had worn earlier except it was clean. Satisfied enough, she began to dry her hair with the towel. Standing before the mirror, her hair stil somewhat damp and sticking to her face, she brushed the long curls to tame them somewhat. Not lingering for long, she moved to wrap the same golden scarf around her hair, and her ears, once again, tucking her curls inside. She planned to go downstairs.

Moving out of the bathroom area, Bertie took a moment to look around the room again. It seemed suitable enough, at least it would be a comfortable temperature. Bringing a pair of boots with her, but not putting them on just yet, she exited her room, making sure the door was locked behind her. She was relieved not to see anyone in the hall. She wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone new, but she also didn't want to stay in her room. She knew she would be more comfortable in the bigger, more open area. When she reached the bottom of the stairs, she stopped for a moment and slipped on her shoes and started to head towards a place to take a seat. Unfortunately, she saw that she wasn't alone. Perhaps if she wasn't spoken to she could slip outside unnoticed.
