Change My World
568 words [SOLO30]

The envelope sat on his table, and Xavier still caught himself staring at it every now and then, as if trying to make sure it was, indeed, real. Every now and then, he would take it, and read the letter within, as if to make sure the words had changed, that he was still reading everything right, that he hadn't overlooked anything.

With the way his grades had plunged, Xavier had been certain he had missed the mark. He'd been certain that he would be turned down, but the letter said otherwise. The letter was from Destiny City University, and it was a letter of acceptance for the fall semester.

Odd, how life had a tendency to change completely in a few month's time. A year ago, he was entering Sovereign Heights redundantly when he would have preferred working full time. In the end, he had caved, hoping it would keep his mother out of his hairs until he became old enough to be considered a full-fledged adult. 21 had looked so far away then, and he had mostly lived day by day without much to truly keep him interested, and keep him busy.

Now, he was almost 19, a bit of a scary thought in itself. Only a few short months left of being 18. It felt like an huge leap, even though it was just a number. And he'd just signed up for more schooling... freely. His mother was out of his hair, and while he was happy about that, there was also regret. Like if there was something he'd missed. Something he had overlooked, and yet he couldn't quite put his finger on it. It bothered him, and yet the more he tried to guess at it, the more he seemed to lose track of what he was trying to find.

He hadn't given up on his dream, no – this was another effort to make it come true. Sovereign had lacked the classes he needed, being a preparatory problem. It had all seemed the same to Xavier. Though, his year spent wearing that horrible bowtie wasn't entirely wasted – he could skip entrance exams entirely, with the grades he had, even though they had slipped. It seemed like a small miracle in itself. University had a greater diversity of programs, especially in music – he would finally learn how to play his guitar properly – but also business things that would help him out later.

It felt like the right decision – it was the right decision, deep inside he knew it, knew that he couldn't just jump in things unprepared – but why was he so nervous about it ? Why did it feel like he was giving in when he knew he wasn't ? It was bad enough that nothing seemed to make sense to begin with. Couldn't at least one sphere of his life be easy, straightforward and simple ?

And silly as it sounded, he was wondering what Bell's reaction would be. Would she feel like he was giving up, when he knew he wasn't ?

Sighing, the blonde threw the letter back on the table, and ran his fingers though his long hair to somewhat smooth everything out before pulling it back into it's usual ponytail. His first class today was soon, better get ready.

The more he kept busy, the less time he had to think, after all.

Fire In The Sky
495 words [SOLO31]

Sailor Themis ran, his mind still reeling, the adrenaline still coursing through his body, running though his veins like pulses. The last of Bellatrix's words hadn't even truly registered, and he was gone long before his girlfriend could catch up with him.

Like every time, when faced with something he feared, or something he didn't want to deal with, he ran away. How did one run away from themselves, through ? How did one run away from their own questions ?

What happened... What had he done... What had he been doing ?! His arm throbbed, pain rising in spikes with each movement he did with it, reminding him of the pain he had felt earlier. The burning, from deep within his chest, where his starseed rested. He'd seen it in his hand... But that hadn't been real, hadn't it ? That hadn't been real... couldn't have been real, couldn't, just couldn't.

Maybe if he kept repeating it, he'd believe it.

This was the closest he'd ever come to a direct attack on his life force, and it was unsettling. He didn't even want to know what hand in the chest felt, now. Not that he'd had any want to figure it out to begin with.

His everything was hurting, his mind was reeling, and the only thing that truly processed was away, away, get the hell away ! Which was exactly what he was doing.

He ran for what seemed like hours until he was in East Heights, and grasped on the fire escape. It groaned loudly, but that didn't stop him from scaling it, and hiding out in the little nook. Even if anyone felt him here, it would take them a long time to find him proper.

He panted, doing his best to catch his breath. His lungs felt like they were on fire, felt like they might just explode. He welcomed the pain – it distracted him from his arm. But now, his mind was catching up with what he'd done, with the things he'd said.

God.... oh god. Themis slumped, and nearly felt out from his perch. Why had he said that ? He loved Bell ! He loved her with everything he had ! Why had he said that ? It made no sense, no sense at all. What had been in those spikes... ?!

But then... What if it wasn't completely whatever had been in there ? Doubt crept in, and it only made matters worse. It had felt real. What if it had been him ?

What if he had the potential to be exactly what Bellatrix had fought ?

Try as he might... deep inside himself, he knew. He couldn't deny it. It was impossible to make up something that wasn't there, was it ?

The potential was there. That, more than anything, scared Themis.

Themis did not sleep, that night. He also refused to come out of the fire escape until the sun rose again.

Falling Away
1138 words [SOLO32]

It felt like everything, his whole life, was slowly fading away, eroding into pieces faster than he could even comprehend.

Themis had followed the call of his asteroid as an escape – the four walls of his apartment living room were becoming more and more suffocating every day, especially with every door and window locked shut. Xavier had wanted to be alone in misery, and he had learned the lesson. Outside of smashing a window in, there would be no way for anyone to come in. And if anyone smashed a window, well, there would need to be explanations. Very good explanations.

But much like he had sought to escape both his lives, now he had sought to escape the prison he had all but made for himself in the process. He could have gone to Bell, he knew that. But no matter how much she said it, he still felt like he was burdening her with his presence, sometimes. Especially in times like this. It was when Xavier did something that he had never done before – powered up from within his own apartment, and then was quickly gone. He didn't even care if anyone, or anything, had even felt him at this point.

The asteroid was.. different than the others times he had been to it. It was oddly alive. It was still barren, but there was life. Pale silver leaves in the tree, ice blue flowers on the vines that had overtaken nearly everything, every nook and cranny, every broken building.

His steps led him right where he always went, as if on instinct – the courtyard was still covered in frost, but the once dead grass at his feet had taken on a frosty green color, and the large tree was made even mightier by leaves, with white blooms, almost like cherry blossoms, falling down in a gentle rain.

Spring had reached Themis at last, it seemed. It was so odd that, until he had seen the buds on the very same tree, he had thought everything all but dead – thought the very course of seasons halted.

The blonde sighed, then sat at the base of that tree, resting his head against his knees. The change of scenery hadn't helped his mood any, it seemed, but at least he was somewhere else. Somewhere truly alone. It was what he had wanted... right ?

To be sure, Themis wasn't certain what it was that he even wanted anymore. It felt like the only thing he had left was Bell, Bellatrix. Everything else was spiralling out of control, out of his reach. His mother hadn't called since the day they'd had that argument on the phone, months ago. Odd that now he missed her, while he previously wanted nothing to do with her anymore. Even more cutting was his father, who while still present, knew very well that his only son, the son he had raised nearly on his own, was hiding something from him. Something he simply could not say. Not without endangering him.

Could he ? Things would simply be so much easier if he could share in that secret. It would be easier if Damian Avery knew exactly why his son showed up with bruises, cuts, and broken bones, and was not left to wonder exactly what Xavier was hiding from him.

Then it was the matter of his friends. He hadn't seen the non-senshi ones in what seemed like eons. They must have given up on him, figured he had forgotten about them and moved on, which made his heart drop. He hadn't forgotten about them. It was just... being a senshi had taken over everything in his life. There had been nothing that hadn't been affected. His family. His relationships. His work. School. Even his music, something he loved so dearly with every cell of his being, had more or less fallen to the wayside.

And for what ? For confusing revelations, for violence, torture, war ? For the revelation that his cousin had probably tortured others ? That Bell had killed someone, and that it had nearly broken her ? That he felt more distant to others he had loved each and every day ? In his own pain, he was becoming more and more blind to the pain of others around him. He was effectively out of the loop, and to be honest, he wasn't even sure if he cared anymore.

What what little good he did – defeat youma, save civilians, give awkward pointers to the new senshi he met – enough to out-weight everything else ?

When would being Sailor Themis would break him so completely and utterly that there would be no bouncing back from it ? It seemed inevitable at this point. He was headed right for a head-on collision and he wasn't sure how to stop it. Or if he even wanted to stop it. It seemed too late for that – too much lost already.

Being a senshi seemed like a curse, not a bright, shining duty or responsibility. A curse that was slowly stealing away everything he had. And yet, if he hadn't been a senshi, if he had never met ********* that night and became Sailor Themis, would he have called Bell before Halloween ? Would they have gone to the halloween party, where his secret had been revealed to her ?

Would she have been here at the hospital, after he had woken up ?

Would he have confessed his feelings to her on the rooftop of his apartment building, one chilly November night ?

Would he have her by his side, the one person he felt was even more precious than his own life ? The one person he always feared would one day give up on him ?

There were so many questions, and little to no answers. Perhaps it was what bothered him the most. He didn't even know why he was bothering to do all of this, to put himself through everything. He might be able to become the person he had used to be if he just threw the damn pen and cellphone into some dark drawer he never thought to open, hoarded trinkets among hoarded trinkets. But now that he knew... It seemed like there would be no ignoring it. Others wouldn't let him ignore it.

The white blossom fell, carried by the wind, and Sailor Themis sighed once more. He felt so numb and so broken that he wasn't even sure the pieces could be glued back together again.

Only he had the power to fix his life, but Xavier Avery simply did not know how to, or even where to begin.

Sailor Themis had seen his world break once – it seemed like watching the same happen again was now inevitable.

The First Step
1002 Words [SOLO33]

“Xavier Taylor Avery, will you tell me in what kind of mess you got yourself into, now ?!”

This was about as much as a warm welcome as Xavier had expected. His relationship with his father had grown to become more and more tense as the months passed by – or more accurately, as the injuries added up. He could understand his father's irritation. He had never been a troublesome kid, before this mysterious string of hospital stays and bruises. Before the lies started pilling up.

The sight of a rather irritated Damian was almost enough to send Xavier running off, his broken glasses still in his outstretched hands. He didn't make enough money to cover both these and his apartment, so right back to daddy he went. What else could he do ? Go to Bell ? That would have been even more embarrassing.

But this also had a purpose. The glasses were a catalyst, but something major would happen here tonight. For better or for worse, his father was going to learn the truth.

After months of suffering, Xavier was done running. He was staring at the floor, and it wouldn't do – he raised his head and looked at his father straight on, pale blue eyes focused on his barely-taller father. “I fought a monster. They fell off a rooftop and landed in an alley.”

No more running. No more lies. Only the truth. “Xavier... Havn't you at least thought of a better excuse than this ? You know the monster aren’t real.” Damian was being rather terse, but there was worry under all this. It was rare that his father got truly, genuinely angry, but he had been toeing that line since mid-october.

But that was it. No more lies. It was too late to backpedal now, even if the temptation was there. “No, dad. The monsters are real. They're not hoaxes. They're not things made up by attention whores. They are very real and very much there. They are called youma.”

“...Okay. Right. Youma.” Damian was rubbing the bridge of his nose. Xavier could understand the headache. “And so you were fighting this youma because ?”

“Because I had to save someone. Because I had the power to do so.”

Damian was silent. He knew his son. He knew that Xavier was unable to look at someone head on while lying. Xavier's gaze had not wavered. Not once. “Xavier... ? What are you talking about ?”

This was, perhaps, the hardest part. And he knew there was perhaps only one way to get the point across. This was where things could go very, very wrong. “I protect people from youma because I can. The terrorists are very much real, dad... But not really terrorists. Senshi, and Negaverse. The negaverse sends youma, and I dust them. Because I am a senshi. Because I am sick of watching people get hurt.”

“Xavier, you're not making sense.”

“I know.” He pulled his henshin pen out of his pocket. “But I will in a second.” Deep breaths, Xavier. Deep breaths...

“Themis Asteroid Power, Make-Up !”

And that was that. The cat was out of the bag, and after his transformation was done, Super Sailor Themis was left staring at his wide-eyed father, holding what little breath was even left.

“Xavier... ?” Was the tentative question. Themis nodded in answer. It was the glamour, he knew – even if his father had seen it, it was probably hard to connect that the new being in front of him was, indeed, his son.

“My god... So you are a terrorist ?”

“Im not a terrorist.” The answer was a little annoyed, but he sighed. “I am... a fighter. A defender. I do my best to keep everyone safe.”

“So your bruises... ?”

“Fights. Not always the monsters.”

“Your arm ?”

“Halloween Ball gone very, very wrong. The cake was a lie.”

Damian didn't get the reference. “Last February ?”

“Fighting for the very damn core of Planet Earth.” Fun stuff. In a flash, Themis was Xavier again. No use standing here drawing every damn negaverse agents around straight to his father's house.

“What ?”

“You heard that right.” Xavier sighed. “Dad... look. The fact is that im fighting. Im getting in trouble. But I believe this is for the best.” Most days, anyway. “Im sorry I had to lie to you. I didn't want to, but I didn't want you to get caught up in this, either.”

“So you...” Damian swallowed. Hard. “How long have you been doing this ?”

“Mid-october.”

“Just... damn it, Xavier. Are you really serious ?”

“I am.” Xavier's gaze was still level. “Im sick of lying.”

“Good god.” Damian didn't understand – he hadn't expected him to – but at least now he knew the truth. And it was like something heavy and crushing had been lifted from him. “What about Bell ?”

No, he couldn't go there. He couldn't say that Bell was a senshi. “She knows.” Was the simple answer. “She understands.”

“Well...” Damian looked like he was about to say something. “Well, then.” He sighed. “Come on, you were due for an eye exam, right ? Just.... god damnit, Xavier. Don't get yourself killed.”

It was so raw, so silly, and yet at the same time, so simple, as he was ushered outside and into his father's car. “I don't plan on it, dad.”

“I want the truth from now on. If you end up in the hospital again, call me before they do.”

“Yes, dad.”

So strange, and yet so simple. The cat was out of the bag, and while what he had just revealed his father might not truly sink in for quite some time, it was one step taken.

The Second Step
749 words [SOLO34]

While much simpler and less... revealing of deep hidden secrets than facing his father a few days ago had been, Xavier was just as nervous now – or perhaps even more so that he had been while telling his father of his secret double identity. Had he been told a few years ago that he would be sitting here, in one of Destiny City's many restaurants, waiting for his mother to show up, he would certainly outright have laughed.

And yet here he was, new glasses on, waiting for Sarisa to show up. When he had called her the night before, she had all but picked up in tears. The two had been waging a small war of their own for four years now, with things coming at an overhead when he had his breakdown after the first fight in Elysion. It was probably impossible to truly mend things, because the bottom line was that Xavier simply did not trust his mother. Hadn't for over ten years, and still did not.

She would now know about Themis. Hell, she wouldn't know about Bell for quite awhile if he could help it. No, what Xavier wanted was to lay it all to rest. Bury the war hatchet, as it were. He was already fighting in one war, one infinitely more dangerous. He saw no need to keep on fighting this one as well.

It was not long before Sarisa arrived. It wasn't hard for any onlooker to guess that the two were related - he had his mother's hair, and the resemblance was even more telling that the one he had with his father, a fact he had resented for many years now. It just seemed so silly now, and he was ready to let go.

“Xavier.” She said, softly, taking the seat in front of his own. She was clearly nervous, looked almost fragile. “New glasses ? They look great.”

“Thanks.” It was nearly an automatism. Xavier sighed. “Look, I...”

“No, no.” Sarisa stopped him, and he frowned. “You were perfectly in the right for what you said. It hurted but... you were right. That was why I didn't call until you called me.”

The world stopped right there. Somewhere, pigs started flying, a snowball was gleefully rolling it's way in hell.

Had his mother seriously just admitted to being wrong ? Well, s**t. He certainly had expected much more of a fight than that. The waitress came to take their orders for drinks, and then the conversation could resume.

“I have been doing a lot of thinking.” Sarisa said. “And... you're right. I certainly have no right to force your hand on anything. I haven’t been here enough to do that. But I... I want to see you happy, Xavier. I want to see you succeed. Do you realize that ?”

“I know, but I... I am perfectly happy. This is what I want to do. What I want to be.” Not the whole truth, perhaps, but as far as the woman in front of him would know ? It would be. He wanted to be a DJ. He wanted to throw his life and soul into his music. He wanted to be with Bell as much as he could possibly be without smothering her. The feelings he felt for his girlfriend was completely surreal, impossible to explain – just like if he had been waiting for her to come to him all of his life.

He hadn't believed in fate, or destiny, before now. Now... Well, things had changed. “I might fail. I know that. But I won't ever know until I try. And if I never try, then I will just regret it all my life.”

Sarisa was smiling. “You are so much like your father, do you know that ?”

“...I am ?” Was Xavier's dumbfounded reply.

“More than you think you are.”

Normally this would have made him angry. How did she even think she even know how he was ? But she hadn't come out, guns a blazing, certain that she was right. It was the tiny difference that made everything completely different. The one thing she had never done that kept him from raising his own hackles.

Perhaps they would never see eye to eye. Maybe it was all too strained for them to ever truly be close.

But it was a start. And it was better than nothing.
