Wrathful Demigod

The dark lunarian all but hugged the wall at her back, a palm laying flat against the cool stone that lined the corner. Senses strained for anything out of the ordinary. Sound, scent, any evidence that the masked figured were moving one way or another. She could hear nothing save the sound of her pulse in her ears and her's and Veryuu's soft breathing. She'd voiced her concern already, but something was very much wrong, and she didn't like it, not one little bit.

The brush of fabric snapped her out of her own thoughts as the other noble leaned around to her to get a look for himself, and she was struck quite unexpectedly with the realization of his close proximity. A flush crept over the apples of her cheeks, and she mentally cursed herself. Now was certainly not the time for such mixed feelings, no matter how intrigued she may have been when the clean scent that clung to him. Another mental slap chased the idea away, and she returned her focus on the situation on hand. "The escape whatever punishment may follow their actions."

The masks bothered her. Who ever it was was being careful to keep their identities hidden. It could be as simple as vandalism, but it could be much worse. For the life of her though, she could not think of who would want to attack the academy. It mad no sense, both factions attended here, and to attack one was to attack the other. His suggestion of going around them wasn't a bad idea. "There are halls connecting to this one further down, but unless we have a destination.."

She pressed back against the wall, leaning around to take another peek and what she saw made her tense. Pale eyes were a touch wide when she looked back at him. "They're gone. I don't know where they've gone, but the other students have come out into the hall." What on earth were they doing?

((Sorry for the late reply... Orz I had a museblock. D: ))

Cais nodded to Amane. He didn't mind an escape plan, in fact he was quite relieved to have it. The others seemed eager and willing, he wouldn't hold them back. He took a glance back at Xiu and nodded, "It'll be you and me, alright?" he said with a comforting smile. The boy seemed to calm some and Cais was more than happy to have a partner to fall to in case the group was torn apart by whatever enemies lay in wait.

"So either here or the front doors?" He asked, with a nod. "Alright." Watching Amane move down into the open area Cais made a steady move in the same way, keeping to a slight crouch but away from the wall. His eyes darted rapidly around the open Academy yard. Just as there had been masked men moments before, now they seemed to have disappeared all together. Though, a nagging was at the back of his head. This is far too easy, why would they appear just to disappear?

The minutes ticked down and the edge of the building could not come closer. The loud eruption that had broken the silence of the Academy had been far off, or at least that was Cais's opinion. He immediately scanned to an outer wall of the Academy and stopped dead in his tracks. What looked to be a dark shadow loomed over the wall, staring at the moving group with intent eyes peeking out from underneath the dark ornate mask. With a spike of adrenaline Cais instinctively balled his fists, keeping his vibrant eyes set against the the intruder.

Though he was not usually confronted with the "fight or flight" instinct, Cais was having a hard time deciding as sweat dripped from his brow. Making a small move with his feet he took a step closer to the wall, feeling the presence of the stranger's eyes still on his movement. Another look and he froze all together, seeing a glimmer of a blade swish quickly in the light and fade back into the shadow of the figure. Not a sound outside of the beating hearts and breath of his classmates could be heard.

"G-guys." He muttered outward, quietly, motioning to the figure with his head gently. His eyes never left the dark spot atop the wall. "There, there's one by himself." His fists clenched tighter, this was seemingly hopeless. Even with a plethora of talent at his side, there could be many more of the shrouded strangers that they were blind too. Not to mention the explosion; what had they exploded? What were they after? With a deep breath he calmed his thoughts and his brow came to a point with frustration. "Just what is this?" He muttered with a low growl.

The tension of the moment rocketed his senses upwards, and he rather fervently hoped that the lass at his side could not feel the way that his heartbeats reverberated against his ribcage. He'd no idea what his brother might have chosen in such a situation, likely to fumble for his elder's hand and squeeze, his silly, emotional response that vaguely attempted to reassure the both of them. All a foolish notion, in Veryuu's head, but in this crisis, he ached for that familiar staple, something he'd not had as he watched his mother and sister disappear into fever-dreams, ne'er to wake. His father had been too caught up in his tumult of grief to offer so much as a touch to the one who awakened, and waited, a pale ghost that seemed to pale in the reality of tragedy.

What was nearly a hiss of frustration escaped him at his own mental infirmity, a facet of his personality that he found inexcusable, and he iced it away, walling it once more from the waking world. This was neither the time or the place for this when such peril was right at his fingertips. Severe gaze sliding up to her eyes when she spoke, he nodded, rather unable to help noting the faint tinges of red that still adorned her features. Flustered at a time like this, well...he supposed both he and the lady were allowed some small frailty in the face of such abrupt upheaval. "One could almost assume their intentions were political, perhaps...they had a specific target?" It seemed likely, but the eerie, heavy air that accompanied their attack left a rather nasty residue within the confines of the young male's mind, warning of of yet more looming woe. But an assassination with this much damage alongside would certainly prove a hefty and cruelly obvious distraction to their misdeeds. It might be days before everyone was fully accounted for.

"Until some form of order is established..." His hushed words were pensive, "I would think it might almost be wiser to linger within, lest we encounter enemies without as well as in the corridors." And Shin-mu had been here far lengthier a span than he, surely she would know the twists and corners of this place, and with that knowledge, the two might manage to avoid a skirmish. Ill-equipped as they were, there was prudence in such a decision. "Might you be aware of a place or two anyone of authority might vacillate betwixt?" At least then they stood the chance to abide by some form of order in the midst of this treachery.

"Ah. Grand. Company." He pursed his lips, faint distaste bubbling up to the surface. "I rather doubt they have any real plan or form, and grouped as they are, it veritably shouts 'target'. Mayhap 'twould be wise to avoid becoming a part of the crowd." But naturally he would listen to her opinions on the matter, twas only polite, and if she felt strongly one way or the other, Veryuu would likely bow to her whim. That is if he was not overcome with revulsion for his fellow Lunarian. Alas for the pains that necessity brought.

Jianyu did not particularly enjoy the thrusting jab into his side from one of the men he was fighting. It winded him, knocked him off balance, and for a few seconds he could not seem to catch himself, until at last his feet slid into position and he managed to stop himself from falling flat on his behind. He swiftly dropped to his knees, swinging is leg in a wide arc and knocking his opponent onto his back. A quick slam to the man's head, and one more guard was down.

Reaching out, Jianyu's fingers closed around the collar of the last man standing, and he jerked him up, slamming him up against the nearest wall. With his free hand, he reached around, sliding an arrow from his sheath, and whipped it around, pointing it in the direction of the man's neck.

"Speak." Jianyu said. "Or I will slit your throat too slow for you to die instantly. Why have you come here?"

"We came to test you." said a raspy, unfamiliar voice, and Jianyu reached up with his arrow, pulling off the black mask with its razor tip. The cloth fell to the ground, and Jianyu stared. He did not recognize the face behind the mask. The man's face was lined, and he coughed, spitting blood.

"I said, we came to test you." He answered.

"Test us?" Jianyu repeated, his irritation growing. "What do you mean test us?"

The man shrugged, reaching up to run a weathered, still strong hand through his grizzled dark hair.

"We all know that these students are in this school for a reason," he said. "They are training to become Fighters and Soul Conduits so that they are able to defend themselves against a variety of scenarios. This entire day was planned and verified by the Academy teaching staff as a way of teaching first hand what it's like to be in a dire situation. Though I must admit, we did not anticipate having an actual Fighter in the school. It made things a bit more complicated."

Jianyu's blood roared in his ears.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" he shouted, throwing the man sideways. "These are children, and you are treating them like some sort of experiment! They are not for your entertainment! Do you realize how worried and frightened some of them must be? What is wrong with you?"

The man let out a derisive snort.

"Don't worry," he said, hauling himself to his feet. "You all passed. Barely." Giving a low whistle, he made some sort of hand gesture and started walking away.

"Hey!" Jianyu shouted after him. "Old man! What are you going to do about this school, then? You've half-destroyed it!"

The man gave another shrug, looking unconcerned.

"That's not my problem anymore." he said. "My work here is done."

Jianyu stared after his retreating back, stunned, and for a few moments he could not think. His mind refused to accept the fact that this had all been a setup from the beginning; a simple game that the Academy had made to keep its pride and its majesty and its high standards as high as they were. The Academy was well-renowned for producing graduates that went on to become great and important figures in Lunaria, as well as a strong batch of Fighters, both Noble and Legion alike. But to think that they would have gone so far as to play this sort of experiment on them...Jianyu was finding it difficult to believe, even though the truth of it was right in front of them all.

"Jianyu!"

Turning his head, Jianyu felt a wave of relief wash over him when he saw two familiar young girls running up to him. His sisters threw their arms around his waist, and Jianyu hugged them closely, breathing out slowly. Around him, he could hear the low voices and the muffled footsteps of the students around him as they returned to the school. There was the general murmur of shock and surprise, as well as an undercurrent of irritation that Jianyu was very much in agreement with. He glanced around at the faces of those he had been in contact with, of those who had been willing to do what it took to protect the students of the school. Jianyu let out a curse, then sighed, closing his eyes.

What a day.

"Everyone," he said. "Let's go home."
