User Image The male watched yet another pup come upon them - would he have to patrol these trees daily just to oust them all? While on one paw he was amused, and maybe slightly irked; on the other, the very thought made the low rumbles of growls resound in his belly. These were pups whose families had been lost to the Darkness. Pups left alone by that foulness beyond these trees, over his mountains! Had he not reminded himself of his duty, the wolf would have begun to snarl with rage.

As it was, though, he did have a job to do. A'cuil strained to let the light-hearted feeling of a hunt overtake him once again. "Off that branch, bright one," A'cuil rumbled, depth taking the edge from his growl. "And stop that sniffing - I'll wager none of you but Rouqie, maybe, can smell what we're after.

"Watch."

The big wolf whuffed air from his nose, his ears fanning forward toward the thick canopies of trees. Within the one he focused on, he could hear all the scrapes and scratches - the hustles, the rustles - the soft chirrups of a pheasant in hiding. A pheasant that foolishly believed that it was safe from the machinations of ground-running wolves. A'cuil braced his hind paws against the earth, squared his forepaws, and flicked his ears back against his head with a fluid ease that came only with practice. And then... he leapt! Powerful hindpaws took him fully off the ground and into the boughs, powerful jaws aiming for the throat of the bird he dropped in on.

--> He did not strike it cleanly, his bite missing its mark, but stunned it from the branches nevertheless. It fell pinned beneath the warrior's paw as both thudded to earth.

xxxxxIcarus shrunk back as he could feel A'cuil's aura of anger radiate outwards. The warrior wolf looked as though he was at the point of striking something -or someone- nearby. He pondered for a moment if it had been the entrance of the most recent pup that had caused such a response. However, the thought quickly passed as he was asked to remove his paw from the tree's limb.

xxxxxQuickly, as though the branch had been poisoned, Icarus returned his paw to a standing position. It was then that he began to wonder how he would climb the tree if he was not to use the branches as a method to gradually climb. He released a quiet whine as A'cuil told him to stop sniffing. He had enjoyed the feeling that he was learning to be a hunter through and through. Still, he did as he was told and stood back to watch the brown wolf.

xxxxxIcarus' eyes went wide as the spotted wolf launched himself into the trees. He had never seen a wolf of such size seem to fly upwards into a canopy. His mouth hung open, gaping as he watched. The blue-eyed pup was somewhat disappointed as A'cuil fell to the Earth once more, but when he noticed the pheasant pinned beneath his arm, Icarus wagged his tail.

Kora watched with amazement as A'cuil lept off the ground and up as high as the leafy branches. She waited only a few moments before A'cuil thudded down, a pheasant pinned under one massive paw. The only thing she could think of was if he had invsible wings, to take him so high.

She wanted to ask how they could learn to jump so high, but refrained. A'cuil would get to that in his own time.

Rouqie chuckled a little, she couldn't help it. This was unlike anything she'd every seen. The big burly wolf launched himself into the air. Well, that answered one question, now, how he could possibly teach the other pups this, she knew not.

UP above in the canopy, some of the other pheasants panicked and threw themselves into the adjacent trees, scattering. Only a few remained, too terrified to move in the tree above.

"Impressive." She stated.

The silver female had given the pup a lick on the head in greeting, her own tail wagging. She watched him join the others and watched from the ground as the male leapt into the air. "Oh my.." the timid fae murmured quietly. He had gotten some remarkable air and his hunting had been successful, so she saw. She wondered Idly why they were hunting what was in the trees but did not inquire. She stepped forward into the sight of others and went to sit with the pups. She didn't know how to hunt like this. Maybe it would benefit her to learn with the young. She had pride and dignity and it was not beneath her to admit she needed to learn something, so she sat willingly among the young and watched. She looked at the little orange puppy and licked his cheek again. "Hello little one." she said to him softly.

Ceres watched in awe as A'cuil leaped high into the tree, snatching a pheasant as if it were a normal occurrence. In her mind, it would be a hard feat to teach the pups this nifty trick, but thought that it was too advanced for her. A'cuil must have learned to move his muscles in that manner when he himself was a young pup, and to train old muscles is a lot harder. "I wonder where he came from, and why he is alone, for if he is this great of a hunter, where are the ones that trained him, the ones that were trained with him?" Ceres thought to herself as she walked closer to the group again.

As soon as her mind got onto where A'cuil came from, it switched to gazing over the group and wondering where everyone else came from. "Could they have been affected by the same thing that got me kicked out of my old pack." Ceres questions herself. "If it is the same thing, then how did this many pups manage to survive it when so many of my old pack's young were killed brutally?" With this last question, Ceres started to feel the bitterness grow inside her, but quickly tries to shake it off. She could not scare anyone, nor let one that she had this cold bitterness in her heart if she is to stay with this group.

User Image A'quil straightened, looking with a slight frown at the bird beneath his paw. The creature squawked feebly, reminding him just so effectively that he was very out of practice. His head cocked slightly to the side as he looked up at the pups, hearing the gasps and various comments of the others about him. The wolf's ears flicked, bemused at their reactions.

"This is the way of the mountain wolves. It does indeed take a lot of power - but it is needed power. Our prey was never found on the ground, unlike in this forest. Always it hid among the crags and stones, the nooks and the crannies. So we leap, with all our power, in order to go to our crafty meals."

Three more times the wolf leapt, his voice rumbling in enjoyable growls as he sought pheasant for each pup on the ground.

--> One he killed himself, just to show them how: his bite was quick, breaking the neck of the silly bird. The rest he swept forward: one before each youth.

"Kill," he told them. "Cleanly, with a single bite. Our prey are not our enemies, and to thank them for feeding us, we give them quick and painless deaths." A'cuil rocked back on his heels and waited, watching the whelps sharply. "And if you wish, I can teach you the exercises you will need to build your muscles and make you strong as you grow. They are the same exercises I did as a whelp. Not all of you may soar as I do; but I can make you formidable should you ever need to take to the sky."

The silver female stepped back away from the birds, letting the pups take them. She did not want to rob a young one of it's meal. She looked up at the trees and wondered. She had seen trees in the forest with rocks beneath them. They made reaching lower branches easier... they would be good for the pups to practice on. She approached the male and said so.

She was intrigued by his pelt color. It reminded her of fall, when the light breaks through the branches and lights up the ground when it is covered in autumn colored leaves. She smiled at him kindly. He was a wolf of nature, and the first male she had come across in some time.

She decided she didn't want to get in the way and she stepped back from the group, sitting in the shade among some rocks. Her head remained up and alert, ears set forward as she observed the wolves in the group and her bright eyes followed the male with curiosity and then, she laid down, wrapping her tail over her face. After a few moments of stillness the haze took effect and she became difficult to see in the shadows, but if one looked closely they would see her and her blue eyes looking out at them.

Kora listened and watched with a focus she had never experianced before. It was amazing, that he could jump like that over and over again; even more that she might one day be capable of doing it. When A'cuil told them to each kill a bird, she almost hesitated. She didn't want to kill a being that was defenseless and pinned down; but when she saw the fear in the pheasant's eyes she stepped foward and quickly bit it's neck, snapping it.

"Thank you." she wispered to the dead pheasant.

xxxxxIcarus tensed as A'cuil drew the pheasants near. He released a pup-like growl, more charming than intimidating. His legs bent as he crouched, prepared to attack. With a deep breath, the memory of the final attack upon the stag had crossed his mind. The scent, the sight, the taste of the blood he spilt made his mouth water. Mere seconds later, he lauched himself towards the small being.

xxxxx ~~~Snarling, he flew towards the animal. Wild-eyed the creature squawked and dodged the orange pup, moving at the very last minute in avoidance. It began to run around wildly as Icarus prepared himself to attack once more.

Prince was amazed as he watched A’quil launch himself into the air and attack the pheasant. He hoped one day he would be able to be as strong as a hunter as him. Prince looked at the pheasant that was placed infront of him. He reached out with his paw and touched it, as soon as he did so the bird started to squawk and flutter around. Prince jumped back in surprise but, soon his hunting instincts took over. He crouched low to the ground and pounced on the bird snapping its neck quickly. After, he killed the pheasant, Prince stood proudly above it with his tail raised high.

xxxxxIcarus watched in awe as the yellow and red pup took down that squawking pheasant with ease. Slightly frustrated with himself, but determined, Icarus readied himself for a second strike. His muscles tensed and he launched himself at the pheasant with a high-pitched snarl.

xxxxx~~~ It had appeared as though he would miss once more. The pheasant turned to him and frantically tried to dodge the orange pup. Icarus bared his teeth at the bird and with a final screech, the bird fell to the ground beneath Icarus. He reached down with his maw and quickly killed the pheasant by snapping its neck. With a slight whine he whispered an apology and a word of gratitude to the felled creature.

User Image A'cuil nodded slowly, watching the pups' efforts with approving eyes. Kora was quick and straightforward - but the hesitation from the thus-far stoic puppy was surprising, and A'cuil's muzzle twitched with objection. The new pup, he noted, had no qualms about the killing and took pride in it when the deed was done; this was a good sign. And Icarus... well. The massive wolf's ears flicked toward him, a thin amusement in his eyes at the oldest whelp's efforts. His bird had not be so stunned as the mountain wolf had intended; but surely it was good practice for the slayer of stags. He wondered how many of them would choose to employ their talents purely for hunting, and how many of them would choose to use their skills as warriors.

"Good, all of you." His sweeping glance settled on Icarus for longest, burning with the reminder that there was no need to be ashamed of a mistake at his age. A'cuil issued praise so rarely that when he did, he did not lie. "Here is your next lesson - those kills are your responsibility, and none will bear them for you." To prove his point the wolf lifted his pheasant in his jaws, motioning that the pups do the same.

He looked briefly around at the other adults. If there was nothing more they wished here, it seemed like due time for everyone to return to camp.

Feeling quite ignored the silver female sighed and watched them from afar. Speaking to them had gone without much recognition and she had been approached briefly by one of the young before the lesson began. That had been the extent of the recognition she had received. She decided silently, it must have been because she was a stranger. She watched him gaze at the other adults and saw him motion else where. She stood hesitantly then sat down with a sigh. She would not follow. She would not invade their territory. She watched them get ready to go and felt the cool blanket of loneliness creeping closer once more.
