Burned flesh was all the senshi of winter could smell. He wanted to vomit or cover his nose, but just like the time before, there wasn't any reprieve from the disgusting odor. He tried to focus on something else. Anything. He scanned the entire room once over and for the first time, noticed that Howl had injured himself. Boreas already felt bad that the teal haired boy had to walk around the blazing hot desert without any shoes, but to be injured as well felt like adding insult to injury or possibly the reverse in this case. He turned to acknowledge his traveling companion as he spoke. He noticed the nasty injury his arm suffered. His eyes widened for a moment, but he soon regained his calm, smile bearing demeanor as he answered his fellow traveler.

"I don't mind carrying it for you. I just hope your arm is okay. Would you like me to tear off some fabric from my collar to make a sling? I don't know how to make a sling, but it can't be that hard right?"

He chuckled for a moment, a nervous laugh. Though he quickly took the satchel with the book of sales records from Howl. Boreas still wasn't sure how to cheer everyone up yet, but he was at least trying and that counted for something in his book.

Flinching at the pain of the scarab's sharp jaws slicing through the fleshy part of her thumb, Erin nonetheless refused to let the vicious little insect go. It was a chance, their chance, to get out of here...and the thought that it might possibly eat her if she loosened her grip was a pretty healthy motivation, too.

And then the roar of flame seemed to fill the room, and Erin froze, the scarab hungrily clacking its jaws in her grasp. Ever so slowly, she turned her head, eyes wide as she took stock of which companion had fallen. Scylla, Raite, Boreas, Howl here...but Pyxis... Not even a trace of his rainbow-splashed garments remained.

The smell of burnt flesh, however, lingered.

[OOC: All of you are fine for the 24-hour mark -- will post my GM reaction in the morning. <3]
PostPosted: Sat Jun 12, 2010 7:22 pm

Scylla's and Raite's scarabs panicked visibly when they were carried across the water, wiggling their little legs in frantic terror -- but when they set them down on the ledge before the door, they both immediately set to work on it. They were even capable of climbing the sides of the doorjamb, apparently, and in just a few minutes, the metal door was gone as though it had never been there, as was any dust that had been on the ledge.

The scarabs, much like Raite and Scylla, could now see what was immediately on the other side of the doorway: another foot-wide moat in the next room. It was too dark to see anything else. The scarabs, now aware that they were pinned in by the deadly water on either side, huddled together in one corner, looking terrified to move. Getting those scarabs had been costly, but having them had been very useful.

With the scarabs not moving, they could easily get to the next room -- it was a short step to the ledge, and another short step to the room beyond.

[OOC: Picking up either of the two scarabs on the ledge is a free action so long as you grab them by the backs of their shells -- they are frightened, stationary, and out in the open: no need to roll for success or damage.

Xaki has indicated possible unavailability; if this is the case, has asked that Raite's next non-passive action be to go into the next room. Okayed by GM!]

"Good little scarab." Scylla snarled it, obviously not saying it from meaning it, and she reached out to grab one of the two golden monsters by its back. The other she ignored, not having the hand to keep it, lowering the flame a bit to protect her foot from it as she stepped over the moat and into the doorway, not waiting for anyone else.

The smell of death was in the room behind her, two nameless men and a girl she hadn't even spoken to. She had no interest in staying in that death trap. So without even a single word to her companions the Senshi of the Kraken took another step, passing through the doorway torch first.

Since the saddlebag had been taken off his hands for now, Howl shifted from holding the torch from his right to his left hand, freeing up his right to assist in holding onto his injury. In an effort to ease his companion's mind, the teal-haired lad offered a smile. It looked reassuring, but in all honesty, it was a well practiced smile that he could whip out on a whim.

"I suspect I will live, Mr. Boreas. No need for a sling, since there are no broken bones to be had. It is simply just a scrape."

As Boreas and Howl stood there watching, they were able to watch two of the scarabs from the swarm make quick work of the door. It was almost like watching the metal dissolve away.

"...I suspect it would be unwise to set one of those in the satchel... unless we want to essentially lose everything we saved, Mr. Boreas." Teal eyes glanced to the ash blonde first, then to the dark-haired senshi. Boldly, Scylla walked up to the moat, stepped over, carefully picked up the scarab she had set there initially, then pushed forward.

"...I suspect we should move onward..." He ceased to nurse his elbow and returned the torch to his good arm again. With a faint chuckle, he added "...before Miss Scylla leaves us all behind." With a simple gesture (though it was not as smooth as he would have preferred, curse that injured arm of his), Howl stepped over the moat as well, carefully passing the remaining scarab and slipping through the doorway, torch held out to light the way.

Beginning to move towards the doorway, Erin could only stop and stare as a mere two insects devoured an entire metal door. She'd seen them eat entire people down to nothing but scraps of any gold they might wear, but...damn. Her own scarab was still clutched firmly by its shell, snapping its jaws as though it was put out by missing the fun its fellows were having. Click, clack, click.

Well, there was no use remaining in this cavern of gold and fire and death. Cautiously avoiding the remaining scarab (her own was enough to deal with), Erin passed through the doorway.

The room had taken three companions from the group in such a short time. Rosaline, Hematite, and Pyxis would be missed, but Boreas was more than read to leave the room. He had already has a brief moment where he thought that the vengeful Djinn may decide to take his life, so he wasn't hesitant in leaving the cruel treasure room, though arguably, Boreas found no real treasure there. He wanted to escape since he first was bombarded with the awful smell of burnt flesh, so when the two golden insects were able to eat through the worn metal door, he was almost beside himself. He retained the victorious and hopefully uplifting smile had garnished since he first noticed the disappearance of Pyxis. He quickly stepped through the eaten doorway, torch first, behind his fellow travelers.

"Good job you two! I'm so glad you were able to safely grab two scarabs and make your way through."

He gave them both an even bigger grin and then he noticed that possibly one of the scarabs was left behind, still quaking in fear. He grabbed for the scarab as he passed through the door. Ready to face whatever new challenge may be before him in the dark mysterious room.

The Altar Room

Once they stepped into it, the room filled with light oddly quickly. It, too, was bordered by a moat, but the room itself was nearly empty. At the center of the room, up on a raised stone slab, was a single, golden object that seemed to absorb all the light of their torches and reflect it back tenfold, warming the room like the sun on an early summer morning. Such was its radiance that they couldn't determine quite what it was until they got closer in. Elsewhere in the room where broken chunks of stone in various sizes, fairly non-uniform and nondescript.

At the far end of the room, across the small moat, was another large stone door, this one with something carved on it.

Little golden scarabs scattered at their approach -- and in among them, a single, very large black scarab just slightly smaller than a football.

Erin's scarab was still clacking its jaws hungrily, but the other two scarabs they were carrying seemed calmer, fanning their legs in slow waves through the air.

First into the room, Scylla groaned at the light that reflected from the slab of stone. Bright eyes tiredly took in the new room- the moat, the stone slab, the golden... something. There were little chunks of stone, another stone door, and more scarabs. Interesting, that the little golden scarabs were in this room too, considering it seemed at first glance that the only gold in the room was on the slab in the middle of the room.

It took her a few moments to catch sight of the black scarab, massive as it was, and when she did she cursed. Loudly. And not at all in a feminine manner. Still, she started across the floor, scarab in one hand and torch in the other, the slings of torches that Pyxis had given her bumping against her back.

Across the floor the senshi of the Kraken carefully went, avoiding the stone chunks if she could until she was close enough to examine the writing on the door. Always the door first.

Heat, intense bright heat. The first thing that Boreas noticed as he passed the doorway was the golden object in the middle of the room. Whatever it was, it was causing the entire room to almost feel like they were back outside in the blaring hot desert. The fur covered senshi was not too happy about this and was eager for it to stop. However, after he passed through the door and stepped over the moat, he looked around to see how the room compared to the previous treasure room. It was certainly devoid of gold, a victory for all of them. He had seen more than enough of the golden coins and their deadly guardians.

"Be careful going so close to the door Scylla, this room probably isn't any better than the last."

Since Scylla had the door covered, Boreas decided to examine the golden object in the center of the room. Though he wasn't able to touch it, since he still had the satchel around his shoulder, a scarab in one hand and the torch in the other, he did try to examine it carefully.

Hm. Another moat. The male was careful to step over it once more, his eyes going up to eyes to shield it from the bright light. The wave of heat washed over him, Raite resisting an urge to step back. "I wonder what they worshiped?" Raite asked casually, taking the time to stare at the room once his eyes adjusted. The remaining slings had been thrown over his shoulder, while one hand held the torch. They were in the altar room, so they must have something they would have worshiped. The single gold item upon the slab was too bright to tell what it was, Seth had to lower his torch in order to keep himself from getting blinded by the radiant light.

"That one appears to have a much bigger diet then the others." He remarked on the black scarab, his attention drawn to it not merely because of it's unusual color, it's abnormally large size but Jada's reaction to the large bug. He looked somewhat amused by the unladylike curses, but as a male, he didn't have much to comment.

He walked between the stone chunks to observe the black scarab as well as to make an observation about the gold scarabs that populated the room too, "You would have thought that they would have eaten these stone pieces already." Especially since the golden scarabs had a perchance to eat everything else but gold, including humans in the last room that they had passed.

It was amazing how different this room was from the previous one. The torchlight was just enough to see by in the treasure filled room, where as this one seemed to almost absorb the light and reflect it back brighter than before. Upon initially entering, the teal-haired lad had to instinctively shield his eyes. His arm didn't stay up for too long, since his elbow was still awfully sore.

Carefully, his bare feet stepped over the moat, then for a moment he looked carefully at the practically glowing golden object. It almost seemed to demand his attention, but it was strictly due to how it was affecting the room. The only thing that got Howl's attention once more was Boreas' warning. It was a very valid point. The previous room, 3 traveling companions had been reduced to nothing more than scarab-feed.

Upon the ground, there was a faint glitter of gold caught two teal eyes.

Oh... more scarabs? So we are still in danger it would seem.

He was just about to shudder slightly, when a valid reason to shudder caught his eye. A giant black scarab. Considering his already less-than-loving relationship with insects, this giant version of the others caused Howl to almost jump slightly. Rather than let the black scarab skitter away, this young man instead turned and distanced himself from this particular insect.

His feet only stopped when he came across various pieces of stone. Gold seemed to be something that the scarabs couldn't eat, but Howl was still curious as to what else the insects couldn't eat. Since the golden beetles were wandering around, and had left these stones alone, he had to guess it was something else they couldn't consume.

With this thought in mind, Howl began to inspect the broken chunks of stone for any sign of wear-or-tear from the scarabs.

Light, glorious light. It wasn't sunlight, but it was far better than the dimness of the previous room. Erin did her best to ensure that her scarab was securely gripped as she made her way into the room, eyes glancing over each feature in turn. None of the dangerous carnelian-studded treasure that had so decimated their numbers in the last room, at least. There were, however, other oddities. Curiously Erin approached the slab of stone to examine it.
