Happy giggles, silly smiles.

Emma spent the ten minutes rolling around laughing, completely mussing up her hair. She lost one of the two elastics.

She very much liked being picked up. Her little arms went around Jasper's neck and she clung like a koala.

As their mother had no objection, she turned to Patrick with wide eyes. "Dagons?" Her mother had told her a story with dragons, and they were not nice... but if Patrick liked them then it must have been wrong, just like the one about unicorns. She'd seen a horse before and they didn't have horns.

Patrick nodded as he put his finger to her lips gently. "But we need to be quiet or else the dragon won't want to come out and play - this dragon is a little one, and we don't want to scare him, do we?" he murmured, smiling as he winked.

When he was certain he was out of sight of the village, he moved to stand in a glade, gently bouncing Emma on his hip as he called softly.
"Keegan? Ta? Do you want to meet my baby sister, Emma? She's been awfully good..." He smiled at his sister and ruffled her hair a little.

She's too young to remember them properly or judge them... surely they won't mind? When I leave and all three of us disappear, no-one else will believe a baby when she says she met a member of the Fae and a dragon: mother will convince her it was a dream - or some such thing, I'm sure.

I`m like a spider, you are my fly.

Taranieth popped up beside them, doctor again, though slightly younger-looking this time. I hope we don't slip up. This makes it more likely that we be discovered should we do so. he thought, but he was flattered that Patrick let him meet the baby. "I thought I asked you to call me master... It's all right, I kind of like the closer relationship." he whispered, before kneeling in front of the child. "Hello, fair maiden. I am Taranieth." he said eloquently, as all faeries enraptured by children.

Emma giggled. "Taneth?" she repeated after him.

The fae chuckled. "Close enough." he said.

Then Keegan came. He looked at the child with curiosity, and, in respect of Taranieth, neither bit her nor blew fire at her. In fact, he was quite gentle, and gave her a long, raspy lick.

"Tickles!"
cried the child. "You... Dagon?"

I`ll trap you in a web of delicate white lies.

The young man watched, warmed at the sight of Dragon and Fae greeting his sister.
When he registered that Taraneith had mentioned names, he carefully placed Emma on the ground so that he could lean close to Master Taraneith's ear. Voice a mere whisper as he explained, his eyes never truly leaving Emma and Keegan.

"I thought if I called you and Keegan by abbreviated names, then when you turned up as yourself - as a member of the Fae - my baby sister wouldn't remember names that other humans could believe were real.
The idea being that she and I played a game, pretending you existed before going home to people who would think it was just a story...
Besides, if she called out 'Ta', then people would merely believe she was mimicking 'Thank you'."

Of course, Patrick wasn't thinking such things because he wanted to insult or harm Taraneith and Keegan - if he'd thought what he'd just said or how he'd phrased it would hurt, he wouldn't have dreamed of doing so!
No, it was intended as a way for them to meet Emma, for a way to judge how all three of them - himself included here - would cope when the baby came. Most importantly, it was to know who was going to be in charge of what in the baby's life...

"I think we'll do excellently..." Patrick murmured to himself, smiling widely as he nodded, forgetting that Taraneith could hear him as he continued to lean close to his 'Master'.
Instinct made him want to lean his head onto his mate-to-be's shoulder, but instead he offered the Faery a sweet smile before kneeling beside Emma. His hand was then held out behind him in a silent offering for Tar to join him.

I`m like a spider, you are my fly.

Taranieth nodded. "Gotcha. I am not insulted. Do not worry- I know humans are more forgetfut than the Fae. And I like being called by an abbreviation... by you alone. And of course, the child may call me whatever she likes. Her cute face excuses anything." he whispered back.

"I think we'll do excellently..." came the whisper, a little while later.

"I also believe that." Taranieth replied.

He gladly took the other's hand and knelt beside him, wondering why he kept thinking of the union ceremony where a priest would stand in Emma's position...

He mentally shook himself. Come on, come on, romantic dreams can wait. There's a child here! he thought.

He smiled at the toddler. "Emma... you're a very nice little girl, you know? And such a pretty name." he said.

Emma smiled. "Taneth pitty too..." she said, and Keegan rolled his eyes.

He blew a burst of smoke, carefully in the other direction, representing a little dog. Emma giggled and watched, fascinated. Next came a kitten, a ball, a horse... Emma chased after the creatures and her hands messed them up until they didn't look like anything more than smoke.

Taranieth laughed. "Yes, he is a dragon. His name is Keegan."

"Keean." Emma repeated, as the dragon continued making creatures and other shapes.

I`ll trap you in a web of delicate white lies.

((Taranieth was already kneeling- oh well.))

Patrick gently squeezed Taraneith's hand, smiling over his shoulder as he thought of the many nicknames he'd already thought of for his 'Master'.

He watched as Keegan blew images, his eyes as round as Emma's as he did so - how did the dragon manage such detailed shapes with smoke?

He blinked slowly and turned to Taraneith, voice again low so that his sister wouldn't repeat the words.
"Have you ever held a child before? What are we to do about feeding the babe in the first months? Mother's milk is best but how would we get that?"

He paused, frowning with his hair falling slightly into his eyes as he silently fretted some more.

"Not as if we can enchant Sarah into coming with us - not as if we'd want her with us for long enough for the child to be bottle fed!"

The more I see you...

Taranieth frowned. "I am not sure at the moment but we have nearly eight months to find alternatives... Mind you, I'm certain the Fae folk in general would be more than happy to provide for a changeling, they have the common liking of children... you see, we aren't often graced with them." he replied thoughtfully.

He rubbed the hand he held with his thumb. "We will be so happy. And there will be no Sarah for you to kiss. I'm sure it will do us both a lot of good to eliminate that possibility. And Faeries are respectful of other's mates, among other things." he chuckled. "It may take a while for them to accept a human in their midst. Thankfully, I'm more solitary than some - it's just me and Keegan usually. I'll be sad to leave this child though. Perhaps one day a fae will take an interest."

Keegan distracted the child with colorful and completely harmless bursts of fire. Emma watched, fascinated. She tried to imitate the dragon and, of course, succeeded only in puffing out her cheeks like a chipmunk, and making a few interesting noises.

Keegan was enchanted. He very much liked having a human not larger than he was. And she was... cute! He redoubled in creativity, creating a smoke Emma that swirled for a moment before disappearing.

Emma clapped her hands, and asked "Emma?"

The dragon nodded and licked her, and soon she was rolling on the ground laughing as Keegan tickled her with careful strokes of his bumpy tongue.

The Fae could talk now normally- all the girl would remember was the Dagon.

Patrick nodded in agreement at the fact that they would not need to rush to solve any potential problems, relieved that the Fae would help them - he had no idea how they would react (to him or a baby), but if he met a 'Dark' one, then he simply prayed that he could help Taran.

A slight frown appeared on his face as he sat back on his butt without releasing Master Taraneith's hand, vaguely aware that some part of him was enjoying the caresses despite his distracted mind.

I know we're going to be happy, but I'm not exactly sure how I know it. Not as if I thought I'd ever be happy to remain here for my whole life - I meant it when I explained that to him: Adrian would have been a pain.
But now... now I don't feel pain at the thought of Adrian, despite how I'll miss - but will I actually mis him at all?
I'm probably going to be the wife in this relationship, looking after the house and the baby...

His face broke out in a smile as he began to plan the baby's room, slightly surprised at how content that thought made him, then he turned to Taran as the smile faded around the edges. "I'm going to need to see where we're going to live with the baby..." he stated softly but firmly.

Taranieth smiled and nodded. "Yes, I rather think that it'll need a room, too... Uck, I'll have to have it added, we'll have to deal with the excavators... I live in the underground, literally, so to add rooms you have to dig them out. It should be fine- I hardly spend very long inside. It's funny, I rather think you nearly slipped up and called it our baby. Which, in a sense, it is. I have no intention of allowing that girl within a hundred miles of it after its birth."

He gave the other a kiss on the cheek. "You will be the best parent any child has ever had, I am sure. With perhaps the exception of my mother, but she's pretty tough to beat." he said fondly. "I remember she would make the most amazing cookies... I'll take the cooking job if you like, I'm not terrible. I mean, I've cooked for myself half a century and I never fell ill from it."

Patrick nodded, listening to Taran - strange how the nickname had changed, but he had no time to dwell on it now - and smiling as he returned the kiss to the cheek.

"Of course we won't be letting her anywhere near our babe! She'd want to marry you - what with you being the most gorgeous of the pair of us - and then I'd have to knock her unconscious. With force this time!"

He was only slightly teasing as he said this, fully prepared to forget the rule not to harm a woman if Sarah came onto Taraneith.
This led to bewilderment on two fronts: first, why did he feel possessive at the idea of someone else touching Master Taran, and second what did becoming mates entail?

"Master Taran... what ceremony will tie us together? A marriage service or something else that the Fae do to become mates? W-what did you say about mates again...?"
The young man's expression was perfectly, innocently befuddled as he had too many questions all at once.

Then the rest of Taraneith's speech registered and a delicate flush covered his cheeks before he responded.
"We can take turns cooking - though you'd have to teach me since I don't think I cook well at all! A pause. "We can have fun if you want to teach me!"
Images of giggling amidst flour showers made him smile softly.

Taranieth chuckled at the compliment. "I'm sure she would like to marry either one or the other of us, whichever would be willing to take her. Personally, I'd prefer you, but then again she doesn't have much in common with me so she might do the opposite. But it is a good thing that I am the one dealing with her- though I would not be particularly regretful of her being hurt, I would never forgive you for risking the baby."

He paused for a moment. "Our baby."

"We will cross that bridge when you feel reasonably ready to do so." Taranieth replied to the mates comment. "I no longer quite recall what I said about mates. I've been thinking you'd make a very good one but I'm sure I never said so aloud. As to cooking... yes, I'm sure we will have fun."

"So you'd rather she married me? Fair enough I guess: she's a terrible fate for someone not attracted to her in the least!"
Patrick paused for a moment, blinking before he jabbed a finger into Taraneith's shoulder, glaring slightly.
"You honestly think I would risk our child by hurting Sarah whilst she carried it?!
No! She won't even know she's pregnant until she has already had our babe, which means I wouldn't have to forcibly hold her off from marrying you until after our child was safely away from her!"

Taking a deep breath, Patrick Raphael Smith pulled back and nodded to the thoughts to mates and cooking, snorting in disbelief when Taraneith mentioned his being a good mate.
"You can't mean anything of that sort if you think a decent mate would allow their child - our child - to be hurt when it could be avoided." He muttered, turning away.

Taranieth was quite surprised at the outburst of temper. "I was kidding, don't worry too much. And no, I meant that were I Sarah, I would pick you over me, but then again, we don't have much in common so she might not think the same way." he explained quickly, hugging him a little closer. "But you're right - more than you know. Children matter a lot to the fae folk - meaning we all get everything we want as children, it's a bit of a shock past adolescence when we realize that we aren't really the center of the world... So if you hurt our baby I would not be happy... though of course, you won't, I'm sure."

He laughed. "And then we're always determined to give every child the very best, because of their scarcity... Hmmm... it's getting dark. You may want to return home... And we can discuss baby names next time."

Patrick huffed: of course he wouldn't harm their baby, was Taran completely stupid?! Or did he simply think that because Patrick could lie he was capable of anything?

He felt tears gather in his eyes, unaware of the part where Taraneith claimed he knew Patrick wouldn't hurt the baby. With a smile as he hid the tears, he nodded and stood. He bowed formally, eyes lowered before he smiled at Keegan.

"Thank you for watching Emma. Come on, Emmy, time for supper, hmm?" he murmured, gently scooping her up before realising she probably wanted to hug both the Faery and the Dragon goodbye.
"Do you want to give Ta and Keean a wave or a cuddle?" He offered, still not really facing Taraneith.

Taranieth wondered what was wrong... the boy seemed so sad all of a sudden and he was definitely avoiding his gaze... "Midnight tonight, I'll come, don't yell when you see me at the window. I want to talk to you." he whispered.

Emma whined a little. "Play more..." she mumbled, sleepy. "Byebye..."

Keegan patted her on the back and nuzzled her gently, while Taranieth gave her forehead a kiss. "Be good now, Emma, and I'll see you later perhaps, OK?"
