Chamudeous Terra of the Lilies I'm actually getting braces next week. Along with a tongue guard. I kind of WANT to get them, so I can get as much done before high school. Unfortunately, looks like it'll last into at least sophomore year. >_< Well, might as well get used to playing my sax with them in before my first band camp. >_>
A tongue guard is something that goes across the roof of your mouth...I thnk that'll make it REALLY hard to play. not really. I play with a retainer in. Having things all up in the roof of your mouth is annoying at first, but it grows to be a part of you. I actually play better with it in. 0_o Really? Wow. xd I guess that you get used to it...I had a holding arch a month ago, but it was the back of my mouth, so it didn't really effect my playing, but I guess it did feel weird when they took it out.

well i actually got my braces about a year and a half ago. i play the clarinet and i got to admit, i did have a hard time at first. there were even times when i couldnt even play because of the pain :[ buuuuuttt... that was just the first 2 weeks haha x] eventually, most people will get used to them and adjust. OKAY SURE maybe it wont sound as good at FIRST, but just keep practicing a bit and it sound better than when you didnt have braces at all
PS: my dentist says i could get my braces off any time now surprised

Inthenameofweird Braces suck hardcore.... for french horn, at least. I got mine and it set me at least a whole year back. I couldn't even play up to a concert F in the staff for at least two whole weeks. I've had them since last January and I'm almost back to normal. OMG I know what you mean. I'm a horn player, and I get to have them for another 2 years WHOOPIE!! (hear the sarcasm?) stressed Yeah, I couldn't hit a high C on the staff for days. I think it affects the brass more than the woodwinds, just due to the fact that we have to buzz, but it does affect everyone...except those lucky percussionists, Darn them...lol JK, don't kill me!! *runs*

Haku_Loves_Me I'm so freaking out! I play the Flute (w00t) and I'm getting braces in at least the next year...They say it won't effect my playing but im really worried. I play the flute too and I had braces. At first I had to work to adjust my embouchure a bit, but then I got used to them.
And then when I got them off I sort of had to fix my embouchure again. One of my friends who used to play said that her tone got a lot better when hers came off, but I didn't really notice anything. In fact, my teacher said that my tone seemed to have gotten worse sweatdrop but that was only a week or two after I had gotten them off, so I hadn't fully adjusted yet.
It's not too bad, don't worry biggrin

oboe shouldn't hurt. My friend was fine when she played Oboe with ehr braces. Clarinet hurt for a while after I got them on. it was actually weirder to play without them because I played 3 years with them. Brass is the worst for braces

Well, it doesn't bother me, because I've had braces since before I was playing my instrument.
Just as long as there are no wires sticking out, you should be fine. (Excluding the beginning and when they tighten them, of course. But I play clarinet and I'm fine with it.)

PrinceElly While they make it harder to play, they're great training weights. However, I recommend the Morgan Bumper for all brass players. You put them on your braces, and the braces no longer cut into your lip while playing. I don't know their effectiveness with woodwinds. I was totally going to recommend those! they are amazing! I learned how to play my instrument with braces (got them the same week I started) and I had to re-learn some when I got them off. but the bumpers helped loads!

i think with a woodwind it doesnt really matter but i cant really remember cuz the one year i played without braces i sucked because i didnt practice and since i got my braces in the summer the next year i started out the same as everyone else since the painfull stage of the braces was over so im pretty used to playing with braces but i am concerned about when i get them off..i play tenor sax and since im used to not covering my bottom teeth with my lip because of the fact that you can cut your lip with your braces when you do that i will definately have to get used to covering my bottom teeth again..

Well, I play the flute so obviosly that would effect the sound a lot. But I don't have braces. My teacher this year did though and hes gotta be one of the best Flautist Ive ever heard [well i mean in the same room not like a recording] He said it was hard 'cause he had to re learn how to make any noise but still he sounds freakin' awesome!! so good luck with that

I have braces for a slight overbite that I'm getting off soon after nearly three years, and I play flute. For the first year and a half, nearly, I had this bite plate on the roof of my mouth and a wire on the bottom, and it really affected the air control and sound produced. Then, when I got the bite plate off, it was a bit better (though at the time, I didn't know a thing about adjusting embouchure...*lame*). But I think it affects brass players a bit more, as they have to press their lips against their mouthpiece. Three brass players I know who have/had braces said it was pretty painful at first, but then they got used to it.

When I first got my braces on I couldn't play my clarinet it hurt so badly. Now when they tighten them I just suck it up. I play on ricos during marching season to avoid spending more than a hundred dollars on broken reads from when I miss my mouth and hit my teeth when we go to horns up lol.
