In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried Evangeline could not help the rage that boiled inside of her. Felincia the weak little misfit was getting to be rushed paperwork for being a spy while Evangeline was still crippled. Her hands balled into fists and her jaw tightened. Felincia who had never been good at anything other than test tubes and calculations was about to go back to the werewolf lair?
"There's years of training before you're approved!" Felincia said. Evangeline excused herself for a moment and went to one of the back rooms. She looked out the window and her anger began to dissipate. A tear rolled down her cheek followed by several others.
Felincia must not have seen her leave during her shocked dispute. Evangeline was hunched over in her wheel chair and looked angrily at her legs. She always wore long dresses because they were easier to put on and she did not have to look at her legs. She wanted to have a big tantrum like she did when they told her her career was over. Evangeline had needed sedation for that day and the day after.
She wiped off the tears and took a few deep breaths. She was still composing herself when the door creaked opened. She wheeled herself around to see who came in.

"Oh, there you are," Shaishuu said timidly. "I - I'm sorry to disturb you, ma'am, but Felincia wants to take you to the lab now and work on that experiment of yours immediately. She's trying to think of a way to... 'stall the spying thing', I believe she said. But she said she wants to finish with you, first..." Shaishuu gulped. Senior Keepers had always made her nervous, and even though this one hadn't been alive while she had, she was a Senior none the less. Then she noticed that Eve had been crying. Kneeling on the floor, Shaishuu hushed consolingly and began to sing a lullaby. It was something her mother had done every time she cried, and it came instinctively. "Little maiden in the sky, teardrops falling from your eye, won't you sing a song for me, sing, sing, sing... When you cry I do hurt so, more than Earth and Sky should know. Won't you fly free just for me? Sing, sing, sing..."

In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried Evangeline was startled slightly when Shaishuu began to sing. It was a beautiful tune. "You sing beautifully," she told Shaishuu. "Why don't you come to the lab with Felincia and I," Evangeline offered. She would like to get to know Shaishuu more.
Evangeline rolled herself back out into the other room. "You said we need to head out to the lab?" she asked Felincia. She wheeled herself over to the door.

Felincia was too excited to notice how red Eve's face was, or how solemn Shaishuu looked. "We're going to the lab and finding out if the concoction is safe for human testing yet. Then we're breaking down the door to lab heads and tearing their high-and-mighty heads off." In a foul temper, she watched as her mother gracefully guided Eve's wheelchair down the stairs. Down was easier than up. Then, in a rushed stride clouded by plans, she waved good-bye to her parents and pushed Eve in front of her in the direction of the Labs, not noticing that Shaishuu was tagging along. "Does she even sleep here anymore?" Mom asked coldly, closing the front door. Dad just shook his head and smiled. "At least with someone like her working in the labs, we know that the innocent humans will be safe from those vicious monsters." At the lab, Jesute looked up from his desk confronted by an excited trio. "Oh, you're back? Lab heads just sent two forms. One to spy tomorrow, and one to mass-produce your Xedod concoction by tomorrow evening." Felincia down-right exploded. "HOW MANY BODIES DO THEY THINK I HAVE?!" she roared, clutching at her head. "I'll take the Xedod form. Shred the spying form. And come with us, we'll need your help." In the lab, the mice had successfully turned into mini-ravens. There were no ill effects, and Felincia's mood improved significantly. She showed Eve with pride how, if she placed a bit of hard celery in front of the hungriest of the tiny ravens, it managed to turn itself back into a mouse so that it could use its teeth. "We'd better give it a few more hours, to make sure there are no long-lasting effects," Felincia said. "In the meantime, we can mass-produce the Xedod concoction." She waved her hand over to a pile of ziploc baggies, each containing a clump of fur from various animals. "Kindly provided and approved by lab heads when they gave me the two conflicting forms," Felincia said. "Jesute, I need you at the centrifuging station. Shaishuu - what're you doing here? Never mind - could you find these chemicals in that closet over there, please? Eve, you know how to mix chemicals correctly, right? Thanks." She fingered the key hanging around her neck. "Liquid nitrogen, please, Shaishuu." Racing through her fifteen locks, she whipped out her sixth binder, stuffed this newest form into it, grabbed her notebook, and made a quick jot. "I may have just involved myself in the greatest chemistry breakthrough in history. Soon the Keepers will have an army of animal-humans. I believe that I will request for them to be called 'Xedods', after the project that started the whole thing. I am the first Xedod Keeper!" Straightening, she applied herself to the task at hand. A giggle of excitement escaped her lips.

In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried Evangeline was back in the lab before she know it. For some strange reason she could not sympathize with Felincia's problem. "Of course I can mix chemicals correctly! It's not by brain that's damaged," she added under her breath.
She glanced back at the table with the raven-mice. One of the needles with the injection for ravens was there. Evangeline's first thought was to put it back where it belonged, but then, she thought of what she really wanted to do. She wheeled herself over to the table.
Before she knew what she was doing the needle had pricked her skin and her thumb had pressed down on the syringe. The liquid was icy cold, but burned it's way through her veins. Evangeline gave a strangled scream.
Evangeline did the only thing her body would allow, transform into a raven. Her body only made it halfway through the transformation when she felt her legs explode with pain. 'The fake bones,' she thought. They would not be affected by the serum. They would remain fake and human. Evangeline's hands grasped at her legs which were splaying in odd direction while the prosthetic bones had to shift out of place to make room for the real bones.
She tried transforming again and again, the prostheses shifting each time painfully until they broke the skin from the inside. Blood dripped down her legs until after what seemed like the thousandth partial transformation when the fake bones were all the way out. Evangeline felt oddly light when she slumped over in exhaustion.
When Evangeline woke up, she saw Felincia's worried face. "What's wrong," she asked.
"Your bones are stuck hollow," was Felincia's reply.

'You idiot, you idiot, you idiot, you idiot!' Felincia forced herself to stop screaming inside. Eve wasn't an idiot. Eve was desperate. And she was paying a very painful price. "This is going to be bad," she said, trying to stay calm. "Jesute, we need all the forms. Injury in the lab, Not approved testing, Failed testing... the works. Then we need surgeons. I'm not about to do anything further until she's with a doctor." She hung her head, weary. Gog, when was the last time she had slept? She could hear whimpers of pain, each whimper flooding over her like a wave. What would happen now? Gog, what would happen? She lifted her head. "I need you to rest. For days, maybe. Then I'll have to test your DNA. It's possible that I could create a new concoction, to return your DNA to normal. I mean," she added, knowing how Eve would feel, "you can transform into a raven. But we can't have a hollow-boned human. You'll crush yourself. You've too much mass on them." 'Lord, why didn't I think to inspect the mices' bones first?' She could lose her chemist license for this. Trying to not see the world crashing around her, Felincia stood and turned to Jesute. "Why are you still here? Forms, man! And doctors!" Slowly, she made sure the area around Eve was clean, then turned to clean the rest of the lab. Two tears made their way down her cheeks before she brushed them aside. There was another whimper of pain from behind her.

Shaishuu felt herself go numb. The world of the living had become confused since she came back. Nothing was the same. The ones she knew were all gone. The ones she came to know were falling all around her. Was this what always happened, she wondered, when you came back to a place you didn't belong to anymore? She did the only thing she could think of to do. Kneeling next to Evangeline's bloody body, she began to softly sing. "Little maiden in the sky, teardrops falling from your eye, won't you sing a song for me, sing, sing, sing..."

In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried "How can they be stuck? Shouldn't they have changed back when I changed back? Maybe it was only all of the rapid partial transformations! Maybe it's only temporary!" Evangeline tried to look hopeful but knew that fear was in her voice and all over her face.
'The wolves might know. Maybe they do something similar,' she thought hopefully. "What if you ask the werewolves if they have anything like this? Maybe they do and you just can't do what I did?" she offered. Evangeline tested the part of her instinct now dedicated to transforming. It was numb and sluggish feeling. "It feels like I just overdid it with the rapid partials," Evangeline hoped desperately that it was the case. "Has anyone else tried that before?"

Felincia turned and put her hands on her hips. "Eve, you're looking at the only two people who have successfully transformed: Shaishuu and myself. Shaishuu hasn't even done it on her own. And I can tell you for a fact that I don't have cat bones. And neither does Shaishuu. It's something we tested before we injected ourselves. I had dissected all my cat-mice before injection. And I don't do partial transformation. It's difficult, conflicting, and takes a load of self-training. I've only been like this for a few days. And werewolves aren't like us Xedods. They're special, not a combination of wolf and human. They're a completely different animal. Their DNA fixes itself naturally, and doesn't have to be fused. Trust me, there is no conflict with bones. If there were, it would be a mutation, and the individual would be considered a cripple." Panting, Felincia returned to her cleaning. Then she realized - it may not have been the best idea to use the word 'cripple'. Biting her lip, she turned. "I'm sorry. I haven't slept in days. I should have waited a few more hours before coming back to the lab." She gazed with concern at the bloody floor, the mangled legs, the broken soul. 'Gog, what have I done...'

In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried Evangeline's eyes were wide and filled with tears. The whole reason she had injected herself was not to be a cripple anymore. To hear it so blatantly from Felincia had been like a slap in the face. Evangeline made no further attempt to hold back tears and great sobs. "Will I at least be able to walk?" she asked Felincia. Evangeline had been really desperate when she injected herself with the vial. She was moving onto the lopsided feeling breathing that came after heavy crying. When she was in the hospital before they had said that those were anxiety attacks. One of them had lasted for two hours.
Evangeline could not stop the odd breathing rhythm that had settled itself into a pattern. All she wanted to do was be out of that wheelchair, off of those crutches. She moved her joints as if inspecting the bone through her flesh. "I don't feel too bad," she said around the gulps of air.

"Don't feel too - Stop it. Really." Felincia began pointing to the floor. "Here's the damage report. You gave out in your human form, so your legs are open and aren't fixing. And by open, I mean that they're like shreds of cloth. They've nothing to hold on to. You bled so much that it's a wonder you're still alive. Maybe when the doctors come, they can convince you, but for now, you'll have to trust me. You'll be bedridden for days at the least. Even transformation won't clear the mess up. If you turned into a bird, you'd have no legs. Or half-ones. And when you changed back, your flesh will have closed up, but there'll be no bone inside." Felincia closed her eyes as the doctors came in and immediately put Eve onto a stretcher. "How can I -" "You can go to bed, is how you can help," Jesute said firmly. "You haven't slept in two days. Come on, I'm taking you now. The forms can wait a few hours." So Felincia did something incredible. She allowed herself to be driven home, and then she walked into her house with no intention to eat or use the computer. Her mother didn't question her, but kissed her on the cheek. Felincia flopped onto her bed in her clothes, let her parents take off her shoes and pull up the blankets, and fell asleep immediately. She slept through the next day and night, dreamlessly.

Shaishuu didn't know what she was doing. In a daze, she followed the surgeons and the doctors as they wheeled Eve through the halls. When they reached the medic room one of them noticed her. "Honey, are you okay?" Realizing that she wasn't supposed to be here, Shaishuu was about to turn and run.

In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried Nearly the entire time that Felincia was asleep, Evangeline was in surgery. They took the same solution that she had injected herself with and injected it into two new tibia-fibula's that they then put into her legs. They forced a change in her lower half to get the bones into the same hollow structure she had. The surgery went off flawlessly and they sealed her legs back up.
"Your leg muscles, after being so weak for so long, will take a long time to recover. You may still be in a wheelchair for a while and on crutches much longer after," the doctor told Evangeline.
Evangeline had spent so many years in physical therapy and in the chair, on he crutches, that it seemed like she would be there forever.
"Your now hollow bones present another problem. They are weak and can break easily. You'll never be in combat again. You will however, be the lightest normal-sized teenager ever," the doctor tried to joke but foud no smile in her face.

Shaishuu couldn't do it. She couldn't run. The world was falling down around her and she wasn't feeling anything. Someone who had been nice to her, someone whose deep emotions of helplessness she had seen, was in great pain, and she didn't know what to do. She sat in a chair she had dragged outside of the operation room, singing "Little maiden in the sky, teardrops falling from your eye, won't you sing..."A doctor came out with a tired face and smile. "She'll be okay," she said. "The doc says she'll need therapy. She'll never combat again. How are you related to her?" Related? She knew no one in this world. Shaishuu burst into tears.

In truth that she learned, or the times that he cried "She's my little sister," Evangeline was back in a wheelchair. Shaishuu and Evangeline looked mildly similar, enough for someone to believe if they did not dig, and because Evangeline and Shaishuu distinctly lacked parents, so why not pretend. Evangeline looked over at Shaishuu who was still crying. "Can I talk to my sister for a moment?" she asked the doctor with a sweet smile.
"Make it quick," he replied and left Evangeline next to Shaishuu.
