"She wouldn't let anything happen to me." Rosie said, her tone more defensive now. "I know she won't. I remind her too much of-" she said, then suddenly stopped when she realized what she was about to say. Her confused look vanished, and the nervous one returned. She knew she'd just said too much to get out of it now.

The clown had caught it, too. "Too much of... Who?" He was careful to not let his tone change at all.

Rosie hugged her doll tighter against herself and moved her gaze down at the floor. "...her baby sister..." she said quietly.

Rosie hesitated a moment, then let out a shaky sigh. "Mom came from a rich family. She was kind of a miracle child since her mother supposedly couldn't have kids. Grandma tried to make her into a proper lady that would make the family look good. Private schools, no boys, keep to the house, obey all the rules, that kind of stuff. Grandma and grandpa were usually gone because of work. Mom decided to become an agent like her dad, rather than a high-class lady like Grandma wanted. Grandma got angry with her. A while later, Grandma became pregnant with Julie. Grandma was so happy, she didn't care about mom at all anymore. Thought that her new daughter would be a fresh start. She died giving birth. Mom hated Julie at first because Grandma loved her more. For a while, she let the nanny's raise her, but then she felt sorry Julie and started raising her herself. Everything was fine for a while then. She found someone that she liked and they started dating. Rich business man. Very, very nice man. Then Grandpa was found dead in their house after they went out to the movies." Rosie said, then paused a moment. "She went undercover to try and find out who killed her dad, because she knew it wasn't just an accident. Took up the name Gossamer. While she was undercover, she was introduced to...the darker side of humanity. Being all nice and proper, she found she liked having fun with no rules. She learned a little magic as well." she said, then paused again. "When she really did start finding information, things went bad. She was framed for the death of Grandpa and sent to jail. She busted herself out and snuck over to her boyfriend's house. He had a group of people he'd just busted out of prison and was bragging about how he got away with tricking mommy and made legal plans to take everything she owned. Mommy got mad and waited until he was alone. She tried to kill him, but...." she said, then trailed off. She took a bit of a longer pause before continuing. "She wasn't strong enough and they killed her. A spell she practiced months ago saved her and she walked home after they left her in the river. When she got home, Julie was lying in the same spot Grandpa had when he was killed." she said. Another pause. "Mommy broke down. Julie was dead because she wasn't able to protect her. He whole family was gone. So mommy decided that she died that night too. She became Gossamer from then on."

Joker was silent for a few moments, making sure he'd gotten every detail. "Interesting. Would it be fair to assume that she modeled you after Julie, then? And just how do you know all of this if it happened before you came about?"

Rosie paused a moment. "A little. She made at first just to entertain one of the other people that was at the warehouse. She thought a child would be good, and the only one she really knew of was Julie. I...look a little like her, I guess. About her age. Mom raised her like Grandma had raised her, but Julie had a sweeter personality than mom. Probably because she wasn't really..." she said, then stopped again. Let something slip again. She paused a moment, trying to think of how to get around it, but couldn't. So she decided to try and answer his other question. "Since mom created me and was in a hurry, she didn't get all of the details fixed out first. She concentrated quickly, so I picked a lot of her brain waves while she made me. I know just about all there is to know about her." she said, then looked back up at him. "That's why it doesn't make any sense that she just left you. There had to be a reason."

"But there WAS none," Joker said, still firmly in the same position. "She just up and left. Now, going back to something you said a moment ago... Probably because she wasn't really..." The clown let it hang there, waiting for Rosie to fill in the rest.

Rosie looked at him a moment, like she still didn't quite understand, then let her eyes slide back down to the floor. "Grandma didn't have mom. They had another woman give them a baby. Grandma really couldn't have children, that's why Julie was so special. It was her real and only daughter. When Grandma got mad that mommy was being a cop like Grandpa, it wasn't just because of that. I guess she also found out that Grandpa passed his DNA along the old fashioned way. That's also why Grandma didn't care about Mommy after Julie was on the way. Mom was just another woman that stayed at the house as far as Grandma was concerned. Mom and Grandma never really connected, and she never understood why until after she became Gossamer. She found all of that out, then found out who her real mom was. She was angry when she discovered more about her real mother. She hated the woman. Hated her. Blamed her for why her life turned out the way it did. So she leaves her out of the story and doesn't consider herself related to her at all."

Joker, now moving for the first time since sitting down, got up, knelt down in front of Rosie, and gently lifted her head by the chin so that her eyes met his. "Do you possibly think that this might be why she could do something like this to you? Because, just like Grandma, she didn't give birth to you, either? You're made of magic, not of man and woman."

Rosie stared at him a moment, uncertainty growing in her eyes. "...but..." she began very quietly, but didn't seem to have to words to continue.
She...she never thought of that. She just, sort of assumed that Gossamer still considered her a daughter. But, she was kind of supposed to double as a spy. Be with heroes and other people and learn little things, then when she got back, Gossamer could read her mind. Then she'd know everything. She hadn't done anything really motherly with her yet either. Did she just think of her as one of her creations? No matter how similar she might be, she wasn't Gossamer's little Julie after all.

Joker stood up. "In a way, we're the same, you, me, and Gossamer" He turned his back to her, and did something he didn't do very often. He REMEMBERED. Granted, he could've been remembering a complete lie, but at the moment, to him, it was the truth. "Though I once WAS a normal person, I'm not anymore. I was made into the being I am now. Thanks to Batman and a vat of chemical waste." He turned back around to face Rosie again. "You might resemble Julie in every way, maybe act like her, maybe even think like her, but you're not her. Just like I remember my past lives, but they're not who I am, anymore. I think she must hate us for this. She must hate herself, too, as she's the same as us. But we can't feel sorry for her, not yet. We have to protect ourselves from her. Because she DOESN'T have a mother's bond to you. She DOESN'T have love in her heart for me. We MUST make sure that her hatred doesn't kill both of US. Only then, can we feel sorry for her. Feel pity. Maybe even feel love for her again. Until then, we must fortify ourselves as best we can."

Rosie looked up at him for a moment. The look in her eyes said that she still didn't know what to feel at the moment, but...it was starting to lean more towards heartbroken. She looked down at the floor again, apparently thinking. Trying to think of something, anything to contradict him. She just...couldn't think of anything else to say. Except....
"Are you sure it was her?" she asked, looking back up at him. "She does...there is a guy that takes over sometimes if she gets overwhelmed."

Joker nodded in understanding. "Yes, we've met." In fact, Joker had met the demon, not the guy, but he wasn't aware of the fact that there was more than one extra person in Goss' head, so he didn't know the difference. "It was her. She was behaving just like herself."

Rosie looked at him another moment. Well...then...maybe Jade was trying to convince her to leave them. But, if he said she was acting like herself, then she wouldn't have looked like she was mentally arguing with herself. After a moment, she let her gaze fall back onto the floor. She didn't know what else to say. She couldn't think of any other explanation to try and defend Gossamer. ....she just left him. ....she didn't really love her either.
