Sean nodded, and motioned for her to follow him. They entered a huge landing cradle, and nestled in the middle was a large ship, appearing to be a heavily modified cargo ship. It was something of a large trangle, the engine banks filling the rear quarter of the ship, the bridge sitting low on the front, massive cargo doors and hangar openings on the side and bottom.
"The Sunspear. She isn't as fancy as some, but definitely better than most."
Lori raised an eyebrow with a look halfway between incredulity and dismay. Perhaps disgust.

"You... Uh, yeah, no kidding. I guess it only matters that she's spaceworthy..." The pilot turned back to him shaking her head. "Who named her that!? The only thing she's spearing is my future sense of dignity."

"It ain't pretty, it ain't pretty at all. She's got good hardware, and that's what counts. We can't all have fancy rides like Eric's, and I'll settle for this." He replied, walking towards the ramp, "The inside's nice, I promise."

((How fast can she make the Kessel run?))
PostPosted: Fri Dec 12, 2008 8:58 am

((I pride myself on maintaining plausability in my Sci-Fi RPs. The fastest known speed attained by humans is the Star's Light, at 20% of light speed. FTL (faster than Light) travel is obtained by a Aether Drive, which only a handful are actually on a ship, the rest are on Jump Gates. Aether Drives are functionally a portal, to go from point A to point B almost instantly. Still far-fetched, but more realistic than FTL travel. So, to answer your question... The Sunspear will be at it for awhile, because the only readily accessible drives one can buy are all sublight, the fastest commercial one being some 17% of light speed, military ones pushing 18-19%, Eric Chase having devloped the fastest one so far, with every intent of making something faster before he sells what he has now.))

((I wish my brain worked like that. >.< You're so smart!))

Hattie settled into a plush, beaten down chair in the sitting area of her ship. She could smell some warm herbal tea being mixed up in the galley by Halise and she smiled. She knew Eric would join her soon and she hoped he wouldn't be too mad with her. Halise brought her a mug of warm, vermilion tea and settled in a set next to her. She thank him by raising the mug towards him and then taking a sip.

((I totally didn't get the joke either. emo ))

Pendari walked up to the Rioreet, and tapped against the side. "Hattie? You home?"

Hattie heard the banging as the ship's AI, ROSE appeared on a screen situated near the chairs where Hattie and Halise sat. "Captain, it seems we have a visitor. Status says she is not hostile." The British voice was crisp. "Let her aboard." Hattie smiled and sipped more of her bubbling tea.

The ship's large doors opened and ROSE's portable AI, which was a screen on a track that ran all over the ship, greeted Pendari. "Follow me please. I will take you to the Captain."

Pen stepped inside her boots making a short clipping sound as she followed after the AI. When Hattie came into view, Pen gave the captain a casual salute. "Tea time? Already?" She asked with a half smile.

She moved to a seat taking off her jacket and folding it over the back of it before sitting down. "So Eric is completely unaware of your location? You're going to put the short man into fits of worry, you know."

As everyone was fine and dandy a fancy announcement began to fill the media waves of Thesys via the Kore. The message was simple. It was well known that a list planets(thesys included) were holding onto the remaining fugitives of the Gilgamesh, and other wanted criminals. Those planets would be given three days to give up said fugitives or the Kore and their allies would declare official war and attack until the planets were annihilated.

Erica glanced down at the small screen held loosely in her palm as the little announcement finished and began to replay itself. She switched it off and placed it gently on the main conference table before glancing at each council member, meeting their eyes. "Apparently we now have a time limit." She said in a soft voice.

Three seats down on the left a man with hard scar across his nose shook his head. "They don't have the manpower to take out our whole planet, let alone ours as well as earth and the others."

Erica shook her head. "Their allies consist of all but one of the high-developed planets. As for their technology, it's skyrocketing now that the stone is in their hands. We can't even be sure if they don't already have a weapon that could destroy us with one shot." She let out a soft breath, flipping a small silver ball around in her palm as she talked. "The question isn't if they can do it or not. The question is whether we give into their demands, hand over a small group of people, and buy ourselves some time to prepare for a war, or do we throw ourselves into it right now and hope we can scramble enough to survive before three days are up?"

Tu was still in the bar when she noticed the announcment coming up on the monitors surrounding the area. She paled slightly, knowing anyone who was associated with the hunters would also be on the list of criminals.

As the announcement finished the voices in the bar began to rumble quietly, as people glanced around to look at who was there with them. Thesys was generally a safe place for criminals, but if it meant one or two sacrifices to save their own, loyalties often became knotted. Tu brushed a hand against her blaster, making note that it was there, and hoping she wouldn't have to use it.

"Would you like some tea?" Hattie giggled, looking up at Pen. Halise stood up before Pen could answer and began to make more of his tea. Hunter emerged into the room, fiddling with something. He mumbled "Hello" and went to stand beside Halise for some tea.

"I don't think Eric worries. I'm trustin' that he knows that I'll be just fine. I was pillaging the Verse before I married him..." She chewed her lip a moment. "But still I-" She was cut off as ROSE made herself known on the screen.

"Forgive the intrusion, Captain, Crew and Guest, but a message is coming over the Cortex." Hattie looked up at the screen. "Play message." And as soon as she was done speaking, the message began to play. As soon as it ended, Hattie cursed. "Son of a b***h!" She looked at Pen. "Now he's gunna worry!"

Lori just grumbled and crossed her arms, following behind him.

((The problem with the Kessel run has never been speed--it's a matter of the pilot's skill in a highly unstable ceries of spacial anomalies. The ship must be manuverable, built well to withstand the various unusual stesses, and it much have the sensor suite to pick up what's going on without using enough active scans to pinpoint its existence and location from outside the anomalies. That, and it needs the capacity to defend itself from scavengers or pirates, completely aside from a safe and hidden place to hide the spice in transit. Raw speed has never had much to do with it, because any normal cargo ship of that universe and age could pull it off easily if not for the anomalies. The only reason time taken is considered a factor is because so few have ever made it directly through. The most common (and most pirated) route to Kessel avoids most of the anomalies... but takes longer.

The funny thing about speeds approaching 3.0x10^8 m/s is the relativity of time, which is the main reason FTL travel (by wormhole, hyperspace, "gates," or a special drive) is so popular in scifi. It's the only viable means of making things happen on a convenient timescale, if any interstellar travel is involved. Steube's Aether drive sounds like a simple tesseract concept, which is something best understood if you read A Wrinkle in Time. It completely bypasses speed and force, putting you exactly where you want to go instantaneously--if not always in the direction you want to be facing.))

((lol, and now I understand the joke. Thanks, AC.))

Pen watched the announcement and let out a sigh. She politely declined the tea and clicked her hand against the side of the chair. "Yes, this most definitely is a time to worry. You aren't on the Gilgamesh registry, though, your association with the hunters may label you badly enough. Eric may need to be worrying a bit about himself as well. It's highly likely he'd be on the list."
