Kim Harrison (urban-fiction) and David Weber (science-fiction) are definitely my top two authors. Although George R. R. Martin (traditional-fantasy) comes pretty close.

Can't say I have a favorite, but here's some good stuff I've read recently:
Dune by Frank Herbert The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson The Trial by Franz Kafka World War Z by Max Brooks The Stranger by Albert Camus Foundation by Isaac Asimov Diamond Dogs/Turquoise Days by Alastair Reynolds The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Also, I've been reading a couple of short stories for one of my English classes. "Good Country People" and "A Late Encounter With The Enemy" by Flannery O'Connor, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" by Joyce Carol Oates, and "Are These Actual Miles" by Raymond Carver are all excellent short stories.

I cannot even BEGIN to list my favourite books (I have 5 overly-stocked bookcases and about 3 more towers on the floor at the moment) but I can list some authors...
(some) Favourite Authors: Simon R. Green, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Andrew Vachss, Tim Waggoner, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jim Butcher, Richard Kadrey, Stan Nichols, Tolkien... etc. etc... There's so many more...
