Things have certainly been interesting since I got turned into a man. ...Yes, you heard me correctly. I've been turned into a man somehow, since last Saturday. I'm STILL a man, too...so things are rather frustrating. While there's downs to all of this, there's...also...ups.........but I won't go into that right now.

Yesterday was Tahki's second summonsday. I seem to have the worst things happen at the even more worse times. So, to celebrate, I promised her a day out...and we went out. And I avoided everyone that might have possibly known me like the plague. This wasn't easy, mind you, as I'm a lot bigger than I was only a few days ago. sweatdrop Damn temporary growth spurt...and goddamn this body!! stressed Sure, I like how it looks, but I can't hide very well like this! crying I'm too easy to find... ....And I never realized just how sexy girls a-- NO! I will NOT think like that!! Good goddess, I wish I'd turn back... I made a promise to myself that I'd visit Blayde-kun as soon as I could find those ruins he said he was staying at. Well, Ares bumped into them while she was out one day...but she said no one appeared to be home. ...As soon as he gets back, then. But but but, how the ******** am I gonna explain this to him?? Augh...damnit. DAMNIT ALL TO HELL!

Anyway, back to Tahki. (I've also come to realize that it's hard to concentrate on one thing for too long. Domonic said that wasn't a trait for all males... Maybe I'll ask Blayde-kun about it if I'm still stuck like this when he returns. I've realized, as well, that my..."drive"...seems to be a lot higher than before. Do guys always feel like jumping the next thing that moves? I'm afraid to ask...because, quite frankly, I'm afraid I'll do it.) ...Right. As I was saying, I took Tahki out. It felt a little strange for some reason... I mean, I don't think I've gone anywhere with just Tahki, aside from the shop. It was kind of fun, I guess... She mainly wanted to ice skating again, and we got some ice cream before checking out a movie. If only she were about 5' bigger...it could very well have been a date. She demanded we stop by the shop before coming home, and it still baffles me as to why she lied about the reason. I'm not COMPLETELY stupid...I know she didn't go there just to look through the display items (though she did make a list of things for me...Ares' order comes first, though. I'll get hers a little later). Maybe she was waiting for that one kid...I mean, she never shuts up about him at home. Talon, I think it was...Karma's feien, if my memory serves me right. Huh...I never thought I'd end up falling for him. Maybe I should g--....wait, this is Tahki I'm referring to. She probably doesn't even fully understand the concept of love. Well...she'll be alright, I think. Tahki's a big girl, and she's proved to me more than once that she can take care of herself.

~~~~~~~~~~
Tahki
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got a gift from Talon today!! It's so pretty...and all bouncy!! Soooooo cute and white and red and I'm gonna take really good care of this...this...I think it's an egg!
I feel really relieved...I was getting really worried that Talon might have forgotten me, because he was gone for so long! I was wondering if he was okay...but this proves he's still around! I wonder what he was thinking about, though? I hope things are okay...he said he'd visit the shop, though! It'll be so cool...I can't wait to see him again! M
It sounds like Talon has an egg like this too. I wonder if they're related?? Maybe if it hatches, I can take it to visit Talon! Ooooo, that'll be so much fun!! ...I really miss Talon. Maybe I'll sneak out for a little bit and see if he's at the shop...
Ares
I haven't really been keeping track of this, have I? I suppose I should apologize, however, since there's no one to apologize TO that would defeat the purpose. Aside from Neko's...recent incident, I suppose things have been a little dull around here lately. It's been rather quiet with Tahki coming and going constantly, never saying where she was headed off to, and Merri seems to be recovering very well from whatever happened two weeks ago. He seems to be smiling a little more than he used to, as well. I wonder what Tosten did when he talked with him...?
When Tosten visited last week, he made me realize something I'd nearly forgotten over time: I'm not living here for myself anymore. He also reminded me that I'm more wanted than I originally had thought; if not by the others, then certainly by him. And, as I failed to see it before, by Merri. I guess I never really noticed before that he didn't see I was proud of him being my son, nor that I loved him. I've been telling him that more often since I saw Tosten, and now my son seems to be much happily than he'd looked before. I'd forgotten how much words could affect someone...whether it be for the worse, or for the better. All I know is that I'm very happy to see Merri growing a little more active. Perhaps one day, he'll be able to leave the house by himself again.
...Speaking of Merri, I wonder how Nero is? And Ruya... Tahki said that no one seemed to be home when she went to drop of gifts for Nero, as his summonsday was the same as hers. I'll need to visit...perhaps I can do that tomorrow. I'll make a point to see Ruya as well, as I haven't seen her in a very, very long time.
In almost a week, she and Merri will also be two months old. Goodness...they're growing up so fast.
For one reason or another, I couldn't sleep today...tonight...this morning....oh, whatever. The point is, is that I couldn't sleep. I was laying there all night, puzzling over this whole stupid situation. How the hell did this happen in the first place? Something is really wrong with it all, too... I mean, it feels too natural. Like it was meant to happen, you know? As if there were no other way around it. I've given it a lot of thought, despite what Domonic told me (i.e., not to worry about it too much). Since I can't remember anything that happened at the bar that night, I have little choice. I can either ask Ares to use her recall ability on me and see if she can figure out what happened, or I'll have to send my own mind back in time... Yes, I know that may sound weird, and it SOUNDS easy enough...my only problem with doing it is that the spell requires a lot of energy, and it's not exact. Meaning, I could be sent back too far, be unconscious for too long, and majorly damage my brain. ...So, I really don't want to use said spell... And no, Domonic can't use it for me, because it would kill normal humans. And I don't want his death on my hands... I don't want ANYONE else's death on my hands, for that matter.
It's...frustrating. I know Domonic said he didn't care, and that my friends would understand if this didn't wear off soon, but I care. In infuriates me to know that someone would be mad at me, for some reason, enough to do something like this to me. Of course, I also thought up a different reason for what happened: a mistake. A complete and honest mistake that fate and destiny decided to screw me over with. Right after... right after I had made my decision about a child, as well. I'd been toying with the idea for a long time now, and with Domonic here...I had a chance, right? I could see if it would be true about my other side. I could see if, being only half light demon, my survival percentage after birth would be greater. ...That I could carry on my heritage without dying right after. I've lived on this world long enough to test this theory now. With Domonic giving me hope of love, I could see what happens.
Only now, this is impossible until I turn back to normal. ...What is normal? What if all along, I'd really been a man instead of a woman? .....Yeah, right. And I was born yesterday. The idea of adoption also came up...and I think that would be a good idea, as well. Maybe we could adopt a child, and see what it's like to be parents before becoming "true" ones. And no, my feien and other pets aren't chopped liver. They'll always be my little babies... ALWAYS. However, they're not a part of my own blood, and as far as I know, I could very well be the last one with this blood. I have yet to explain Domonic's little transformation from when we fought Shadow a little over a month ago. He IS human...isn't he?
Well, enough talk about me. At least I can still get chatty...must mean that I haven't lost my feminine side completely. Amongst the worries I have of myself, I've gained one more person to grow worried about. ...Maybe in a way, two people. Tahki, and Merri.
Tahki's been home a lot less as of late, and I end up getting worried sick about where she might be. Though, while I'm sure she's just at the shop, one can never know when you're only less than 4" tall. Yesterday, Tahki came home rather late, and was probably just lucky that I hadn't gone to bed yet (and attempt to sleep, at least). She, apparently, "likes somebody", though I could swear it was more of a love, and not just a like. As I said because...I doubt she fully understands the concept of love, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. So...she likes Talonfaust. I'll be honest when I say that I wasn't expecting that, because quite frankly, I wasn't. Karma seemed to have deemed him crazy when I had met her and the little white feien, and now, almost a month later, she makes this conclusion? Well...it's not like I can deny her decision, right? I just hope she doesn't get hurt like Ares had when she declared her first love.
Now, why would I be worried about Merri, you might be asking. Well, diary (wow...I think that may be the first time I started talking to you...), I'll start off with the good news. His recovery from the incident from about 2 or so weeks ago is going very very nicely, and I think he may be even leaving the house when Ares goes off to visit Ruya tomorrow. Also, he's trusting me more, and is actually doing things with me. (The other day, he asked me to teach him a card game...and after that, he even asked me to play the piano so he could listen.) While all of this is very good and is making me happy, there's a few things that have been bothering me. Merri looks rather paranoid of a lot of things, especially if he's alone even for a moment. He gets creeped out by the droning sound a bug makes, he's decided that he hates the colors red, yellow, and brown (and has tried to paint his wings more than once. I think I've finally convinced him to stop...), and he also has an incredible fear of spiders. ...Why spiders I have no idea, but he's mostly afraid of the ones he noticed from "recalling" a spider's web. (I guess he was curious, because I know he's normally not that stupid. He's also seen some spiders in the trees from the wood that he recalls. Poor feien...) And the "anything bigger than me" fear still stands, but he's gotten a lot better. He'll at least give most things chances before turning them completely down...
I guess what worries me about him is that he's keeping himself locked away. As if the world betrayed him without meaning to, whatever happened that one time he went out on his own. I suppose fate and destiny must of played their cards again when it happened, and he suffered quite a bit for it. No...he had the WORST suffering for it: nothing is more painful than emotional suffering, as the scars of one's emotions hardly ever heal. I mean...when he came back that night with Nero, his head was a little tender, but other than that there wasn't any physical damage. Only emotional... I still wish I knew what happened. He won't let Ares use her recall ability on him, and he's always assuring Tahki of the same two damn things: "It's not your fault," and "One day, you'll be able to protect someone. But it won't be me." ...It won't be him... I think that whatever happened that day, he might not have been the only one involved. Tahki's mouth is shut...the only thing she said was that Nero was there too. Nero...he wouldn't hurt his brother. Then...what could have happened?? ...I'll figure it out, one day. I'll figure out what happened, and then I'm gonna...I don't know what I'd do. But whatever happens, I WILL get to the bottom of all of this. One way or another.
...I think I've bored you enough, diary. And it sounds like Domonic's up, so I think I'll talk to him about something more personal I've had in mind. Maybe this time, I'll actually get around to talking about it...
(July 24, 2004)
Tahki stirred lightly in her sleep, having decided to take a nap since she hadn't slept well the night before. It had been very hot lately, and even with the window open, most of the air that drifted inside was very warm. So, a nap was in order, and she decided her day would be spent in the freezer, especially after overhearing Neko complain about the weather getting to about 95 degrees and well over.
She had been sort of laying inside one of the ice cube trays, able to fit herself mostly inside if she was sitting, her wings drawn around herself to make a blanket of sorts. However, now everything seemed a little tight, and the cold feien was starting to feel rather cramped in her position. Blinking her yellow eyes open slowly, Tahki glanced about, wondering if she had been moved after falling sleep. No, she was still in the freezer. ...Then why did she feel so stuck? ...Actually, why WAS she stuck??
Extending her wings to stretch them out, she tried to lift herself from the ice cube tray, having turned into an odd position where her legs were dangling out and her body was practically just folded in half. It wasn't comfortable, and she could hardly move, having somehow sunk too far into the hole in the tray. Wait...was that even possible? Ugh...it HURT being stuck like this. Flailing her arms and legs, doing her best to wiggle her way out, she started to flap her large wings with all her might in an attempt to maybe even fly out. Her wings felt...heavier than usual. They also looked bigger than usual! Oooo...so pretty.... NO! Out first, then gawk.
After another moment of flailing and flapping, Tahki gave up with a sigh, needing to rest. While she sat inside of the tray, sprawled the way she was, it started to occur to her that when she bent her knees long the wall of the tray, she moved up a little bit. Hmmm...what happened when she leaned back? Leaning back against the wall, she could feel herself move up again, like before. Okay...so if she leaned back, and bent her knees more, and maybe used her arms to lift herself out of the tray... While she did this, it still took a moment to even get herself up far enough to attempt a roll off onto a package of frozen peas. Oh, but she DID manage to! She also managed to land on her side a little wrong, and bend her ear the wrong way.
"OW!!" she cried to herself, sitting up and rubbing her left ear in pain. "That h--..."
Blinking a few times, Tahki ran her fingers along her ear before doing the same to the right. Her ears were much longer than usual! Wait...she was bigger too! Wiggling her toes a little bit as she looked down at them, she wondered just how big she'd gotten. In fact, she wondered how she even GOT so big! Flitting over to the door of the freezer, she pushed hard against it with her shoulder, flapping her wings a little bit for extra force. Oh, wait...of course that wouldn't work! Flying to the back of the freezer, Tahki braced herself, and then, using Head Start for extra speed, she rammed into the door with her shoulder, tumbling out of the freezer as the door pushed open.
"Mirror...I need a mirror!" she said to herself, smiling as she glided around the kitchen before wandering into the living room, almost running into Neko.
"Hey now...what did I say about loo--....oh!" Neko blinked, a little startled. "Tahki...you grew up!"
Grew up? ...That's right! Like Rakuen had not long after she had first met him! "I need a mirror, Neko!" she giggled, noting the faint rosy color on her bondmate's cheeks.
"...Tahki, look to your right," Neko did his best to stifle a laugh. How she'd completely missed her own reflection, he would never really understand. "Then you should head upstairs and show Ares and Merri, okay? I'm sure they'll be happy as well."
Glancing over to the right, she blinked her yellow eyes a couple of times, almost stunned herself with the way she looked. It was already a given that she was now much taller than before, but her wings were also very large (and a little brighter than before), and her ears seemed to droop a little bit from being so long. Narrow, yellow eyes looked back at her, showing a well-toned body that had seemed to grow darker in color. However, Tahki kept looking back at her ears, wondering why they didn't seem to sit right like the others' did. So long...was that normal? What would everyone else think? ...Maybe it would just be something that would pass, like Ares and Merri's third eyes.
Well, onward upstairs! Flying quickly around the three corners she needed to take in order to get to Neko's room, the cold feien looked around, wondering where the other two feien were. After a moment of searching, she found them both meditating in the closet. Or rather, Merrimack was mediating, and Ares was helping him practice his magic.
"Ares! Merri!" she called out, flying over to them quickly with a smile. "Look at me!"
With her concentration now ruined, Ares sighed lightly, her three red eyes glancing over at the other bi-colored feien, wondering what she wanted. To her surprise, however, it wasn't anything completely useless. Smiling slightly, she nodded in approval.
"I take it this just happened?" she asked quietly, leaning a hand over to her son to shake his shoulder a little bit. If Tahki grew up...that only meant that her children would be growing soon as well. "Merri, look. Tahki's grown up."
Merrimack groaned a little bit, not too happy with being disturbed. Blinking open his orange eyes, he almost glared at his roommate, but instead began to blush. That was...Tahki?? For a moment, he only stared at her, quite speechless, as a part of him just couldn't believe it. Finally, he turned away, mumbling under his breath, "Looks nice..."
Well, that was good enough for Tahki, as long as it wasn't a BAD reaction. Giggling to herself, she flitted over to the windowsill where she usually slept, picking up the dubloon Talon had given her so long ago. She looked at the reflection and smiled, wondering what he would think about her new change. Hugging the coin to her chest, she wrapped her wings around a little bit as if to protect herself, smiling brightly as she sat down to think and oogle over her own reflection.
RP that occured July 26/27, 2004: (From the shop)
Tahki yawned quietly as she glided into the shop, yellow eyes glancing about the empty room. No one ever seemed to be around when she showed up lately, and it was getting rather discouraging. Flitting over to the counter, she tried hard not to trip over the edge like she usually did.
Step, step, step...slip! Always...always the feathers! Having come loose and landed before she had on the counter, her feet caught hold of a couple of red feathers, and there went her legs...right out from under her.
"Eeep!" she squealed, landing on her back. Okay...not too bad. No one was there, right? So everything was still good! Quickly, the cold feien picked herself up, ruffled her feathers to straighten them out, and fixed her hair a little bit so that it wouldn't look like anything had happened.
An orange Feien floated in slowly, a shiny key dangling around his neck. He glided in and landed on a coffeetable silently. He spread his wings and stretched. Boy, what a day! He had slept through about a day and a half on his return from Ianios's adventure. He had been throroughly wiped out...but now he felt better than ever.
He turned around to spy a Feien he thought he knew. The color was similar...TAHKI?!!?11111oneoneone
"Tahki? IZZAT YOU?!" he exclaimed.
Driesan flitted around on the table in front of a sleepy Xander. He was excited, and was eager to meet new people, simply waiting for the "go on" signal from his father. It came with a yawn, and Drie zoomed off, peeking over the edge of the area where the other Feien currently were.
"Mmm?" Tahki blinked a few times, her hands still on her head from fixing her hair. Turning around, she glanced around the room for a moment, wondering who had spoken. An orange feien...oh!
"Hi Neruo!" she smiled, lifting a hand and waving as she giggled. Did she really look that different that everyone seemed surprised?
Neruo looked up at her...realizing that she was now considerably taller than he. Amazing! The last time he saw her...she was shorter than he! What happened?! Neruo shrugged, smiling. "Sorry for my outburst. I think you look quite lovely."
He turned and saw another Feien, one he had never seen. He was dark and very strangely-colored. Were he and Ian the only uniformly-colored Feien? He doubted it, but nevertheless.
"Hello!" he called to the dark newcomer. "I'm Neruo. You are...?"
The yellow form of Sieben bounced quickly into the small shop. A rather large and bulky sack was clutched in her arms, apparantly in place of the Pixapet she usually travelled with. The bag emitted a muted, metallic sound that made Sieben's slender ears flatten against her neck. She alighted on the counter, her back to Tahki. For the moment. "Erhh." she grunted, dropping the sack at her feet. Her ears jumping back into position, she turned as she heard the familiar name. "That's you, Tahki? I didn't know you grew!" Sieben lifted off the countertop and flew over to one of the only Feien she knew, hovering in front of her. "Your wings are gorgeous!"
Tal peered out from behind the case he'd been roosted behind, quietly thinking, just in time to catch Tahki's fumbled landing. He hesitated, then shook his head, the last of his worries that she was no longer the same feien fleeing. Still Tahki. Bigger, but still Tahki.
Feeling moxious, he scooted to the edge of the shelf and offered a round of slow, wiseassed applause for her.
"Graceful." he remarked, even as others began to arrive, not recoiling in timid antisocialness this time...too tired to care.
Driesan fluttered his wings lightly, and grinned at the rest of them.
"Name's Driesan... You're... very orange."
Neruo chuckled. "Why yes, I am very orange. And you...are very NOT orange." he chuckled again and noted two new Feien. A yellow one and another white one. He waved to both of them. He walked over to the yellow female, extending his hand in greeting.
"I've never met you before." he said.
"Sieben!" she grinned, looking to the yellow feien. "It's been so long s--OOO!"
...Okay, just because she was older, didn't mean she still had focus that could last more than around 15 minutes or so. At least, with most of her friends. Looking to the dark feien that had appeared, she smiled.
"Hello there! My name's Tahki! You said your name was Dri--TALON!!"
Oh my, there it went again. Though, who could blame her? Anyone knowing her long enough would know that she was rather attached to certain feien, and this was one of them. Quickly taking flight, Tahki zoomed up to the shelf the white feien was perched on.
"Talon Talon, look! I got bigger!" was what had come out, though it's not what she'd meant to say.
Driesan sat crosslegged on the table, head tilted in curiousity, wondering if there was something he'd said to upset the other one. It was, afterall, only right that he point out colorings... as they seemed to be a large part of the "clique" factor here.
Sieben shrugged. "My guardian doesn't let me out much. I'm Sieben," She shook Neruo's hand, feeling that he seemed oddly familiar. Brushing away the thought, she landed on the counter in front of Tahki. Or at least...she was in front of Tahki for a moment. About to reply, Sieben caught the words in her throat. She laughed quietly as Tahki's attention span proved as short as ever. Dashing over to retrieve her bag, she flitted back towards Neruo and settled on the counter. "So, what's your name?"
Tal had to lean back slightly on his haunches to actually be able to see her face now. "That's...an understatement." he said, blinking twice and then inwardly kicked himself. BAH! That hadn't been what he'd meant.
He stood up, feeling too short suddenly and still only coming up to Tahki's elbow. THIS was going to take some getting used to. "I would have come to see you sooner but I was..." the excuse he was going to use fled his mind at the last second, making him grit his teeth and he fumbled, leaving his sentence unfinished and then peering over the edge of the shelf.
This was the most activity he'd seen here for a -long- time...
Neruo looked over his shoulder, inviting the dark Feien to come and chat. He smiled at him, and then turned to the yellow one. "I'm just lazy sometimes, but...I'm Neruo. You're the first yellow Feien I've ever seen."
He tilted his head curiously, noting her square patterns and dark skin. He wondered if she were a Light Feien, or perhaps, a Heat Feien like him?
"So, have you been on a trip? I just got back from an adventure with Ianios."
Drie rose to his feet, and walked over, almost cautiously. He'd read rumors about "cliques" in some of Xander's books. And his father seemed to know a lot more than he did.
Tahki landed on the counter next to Talonfaust, and immediately hugged the smaller feien to herself, not even thinking about where that would exactly put him (i.e., just about over her chest).
"Talon Talon I m--" she started, but then realized just how awkward this really was. She wasn't used to being taller than many others, and especially not this much taller. Dropping to her knees, she hugged the feien again, this time being "shorter" than him.
"Talon Talon I missed you!" she smiled, blushing slightly. "I thought I might have scared you away somehow when I grew up!"
Aquaphina flew in and landed near the others giggling slightly...her usual perky self seemed almost hyper at the chance to see new people again. she quickly scanned the room.... her head whipping back and forth to keep up with her eyes scan...
Neruo was almost overhwhelmed! So many new Feien all in one place. And now a PINK one! This was just too much. He wished he could keep track of all this information without the use of pencil and paper, but...he hoped memory would serve.
He looked up and watched Tahki and the white one. Talonfaust? He felt a tinge of...jealousy? No. It couldn't be that. It was impossible. He turned to wave to the pink Feien, gesturing her over.
"Trip? Yeah, right. My bondmate's just a lazy beast," she sighed. Sieben was rarely angry and when she was, she wasn't very good at it. "Well..I didn't really mean that. I guess she's just boring, is all. Not very active either." She sighed. Spotting the approaching Feien, she perked up a bit. "Hello! Why were you sitting all alone over there? Weren't you lonely?" Ah yes...lonely. Something she knew all about, being expected to entertain herself most of the time. Fortunately she had at least one friend that constantly stayed by her side - something this one did not appear to have.
Tal's ears perked a little as he was hugged and he made himself return it, still feeling a bit awkward when his arms barely closed at her now-adult back. He really -did- feel small.
"No...no, you didn't scare me away..." it was only a half-lie. He hadn't been scared AWAY, he'd just been scared to arm's distance for awhile while he dealt with it. "I just..." he lowered his voice to a mutter "...thought you'd want to find someone--" Better? Bigger? More mature? All of the above? He couldn't think of a way to word it without making it sound like an accusation and that wasn't his goal.
The air was alive with chatter of the feiens that had come in and seemed to still be coming in...it was almost like that noise Karma tried to pass off as music that she blasted at wall-rattling volumes while she was in the shower, yet strangely comforting. He didn't keep up with anyone....something could have wiped out the entire feien population, leaving only two or three of them and he'd be the last to know.
"L...lonely? Err... yeah... I guess. Sort of. But I mean, it only stands to reason one would be lonely when alone... right?"
Aquaphina stopped scanning the room as soon as she saw someone waving at her. her master had told her of ways to communicate without talking and this was indeed one of them. she opened her wings and flew over to the beconing Feien... landing slowly at thier feet and closed her wings....pausing before saying anything she looked up and down at the feien..... sizing them up? or wondering how to talk to this inquisitive young feien
Tahki blinked a few times, pulling back a little and looking up at Talon. Want someone...?
"Find someone? Who would I want to find, Talon?" she asked curiously, not understanding.
Neruo suddenly looked up, reminded of something. He bowed quickly to Sieban and the others and floated to the window.
"I'm sorry, but I really must go now. I'll come back later, if I can. Goodbye!"
He took one last glance at Tahki and Talon before floating out of the shop.
"....nothing. Nevermind." he said quickly, glad to find an out from the potentially-upsetting situation he'd put himself in. He drew back and examined her a little more closely, probably rudely staring in the process, but it was merely with childish curiousity.
Her wings were much bigger...and her ears -- they were nearly twice the size he remembered them. Blinking again, he reached out with one forefinger and gently touched the lobe of the left as though confirming whether they were real or not. Having no mutations of his own, seeing them in others intrigued him, especially taking into account she hadn't had them when she was his size.
aquaphina had a seat and watched the revelry between many feien.... sighing lightly and giggling at times....
Tahki blushed lightly, blinking a few times as he touched her ears. Hmmm...that felt a little funny. It was that warm feeling, but...warmer? Unable to help herself, she leaned her head against his hand lightly, smiling to herself.
Tal quirked a brow, suddenly feeling a little uneasy and drew his hand back. He didn't want her to think he was being disrespectful or anything but...his eyes kept coming back to the ears. It wasn't that he disliked them, they just held his interest the same way his interest would be held by a shiny new object he'd just added to his collection in the guest room at home.
He cleared his throat and forced his eyes away. "How have you been, Tahki?" he asked, hoping she was well and that she wouldn't notice the off-gray pouches forming under his eyes that advertised his lack of sleep?
"I'm alright!" she smiled, leaning back to actually sit. "I've been looking after that egg you gave me. I wonder what's inside of it...?"
The bouncing little egg still carried a lot of her curiosity as she'd watch it most of the day when there wasn't anything to do, talking to it as she asked questions about where it might have come from, and why it was glowing.
"What about you? How have you been? Have you been sleeping well?" she asked, suddenly thinking about the dreamcatcher she had given him.
Tal winced when she mentioned his sleeping and hesitated. Lying was tempting, but he doubted he'd get away with it.
"No." he sighed. "But that's not your dreamcatcher's fault. When I'm -asleep- I don't have any bad dreams....its just when I get caught between being asleep and being awake." He thought back to the horrible shadowthing that he kept thinking he saw during his episodes. It wasn't real, yet it scared him senseless. He shuddered a little involuntarily.
Tahki thought for a moment. "Caught between being asleep and being awake?" she echoed aloud, trying to figure out what that was.
Could he posisbly mean that point of sleep in which one was aware of their surroundings, but they were still dreaming? Or was it something different? She wished she could fully understand, that she could try to help him. But was that even possible?
"Is there a way not to be in-between?" she asked curiously, tilting her head off to the side a little bit.
"Not...really." Tal said thoughtfully, trying to think despite his mind's muddled state. He didn't know how to stop the terrors short of someone being there to wake him up in the middle of one or just not sleeping at all. "Its gotten to the point where I'm flat-out afraid to sleep anymore. Its starting to catch up with me in everything, I can't even fly straight anymore." he moaned, not that he could fly straight to begin with, but this wasn't helping. He brought a hand up to rub at his eyes.
"But I'll live." he added, as though that was supposed to make it all better.
There wasn't a way to stop it? That couldn't be good...but an idea did come to her.
"This has to do with the nightmares you told me about, am I right?" she asked, just to be sure. "What if you slept when the sun was out? Not all day, but maybe some of it? Or what if you slept with something? Like...like a kitty or puppy! They could protect you if something tried to come after you!"
Of course, these were only suggestions, and after thinking about them, they weren't very good ones. There just had to be something she could do...
"Tried it and tried it." Tal sighed, remembering how the last time he'd seen the Intruder at the window had been a couple of days ago in broad daylight when he'd allowed himself a nap. He'd not slept since.
"Yeande covered me in pixas when I stayed with her and Youko while Karma was gone....she slept in the bed with me sometimes too. I didn't have it happen while I stayed there, but I think that was because I didn't sleep very much. Every time I moved, Yeande woke up and asked if I was all right." he bit his lip "I wish it would stop. People have enough reasons to think I'm a nutter as it is."
Tahki smiled as she looked up at him, raising a brow a little bit. "Oh, I don't think they think that..." she tried to assure him. "I don't, at least."
She extended her wings for a moment, stretching them out a little. "I hope they go away, too, Talon...it worries me. You look like...like you might be getting sick because of it. I heard lack of sleep does that."
"I'm fine, Tahki...don't worry about me." He told her, though he didn't feel fine. He felt like he could gladly collapse right then and there. It was through sheer force of his will that he hadn't fallen asleep earlier when up on the shelf. Gods, that was the last thing he needed...have an episode with the offchance someone might see it and misunderstand. "I don't want to be something that makes you upset."
"Upset and worried are two very different things," she told him, folding her hands together and resting them in her lap. "I found that...that it's okay to worry sometimes. When it's over someone you really care about, then it's okay. It just means that you care...right?"
She wiggled her toes a little bit while she thought, wondering what else she could say. She did care about him a lot, so it was natural to worry about anything that could prove to be a danger to him, right? Because...he'd be the same way with her, wouldn't he?
"I don't think there's anything you could really do to make me upset, Talon. In fact, I'm not sure if there's anything ANYONE could do... Except for putting others in danger. I don't...I don't like fighting. Or seeing anyone hurt. Those two things make me the most upset..."
Tal sank to his knees as well, really not caring if she was taller than he was anymore, his mind having wandered off to find something else to dwell needlessly on. "I don't like hurting or fighting either...but sometimes you have to. Sometimes if you don't hurt something first, it hurts you and people you care about if you let it." His mind was back on the shadowy shape that kept haunting him. It wasn't real, but he was constantly in the "what if" about if it was.
"And I'm glad...that you don't get upset, i mean." he sighed, his ears drooping a little. What was a delicate way to say that he didn't like making her have to be serious on his account?
Tahki closed her narrow eyes as she thought for a moment again, her ears perking up slightly as he spoke. However, with their length, it was hard to tell, as they were always drooping, and only seemed to wiggle sometimes.
"We should play a game!" she said suddenly, opening her eyes as she smiled. Thus proving even further that her mind really was random at any given point, and her focus could only last for so long.
"I don't think I've ever played any games with you, Talon. Maybe we should play something!"
Tal lifted his head "A game...?" he asked, his first impulse to bring out the standoffishness he showed Karma whenever she tried to interact with him, but then pushing it back as he remembered who it was he was talking to.
"What sort of game...?" he asked, not knowing any off the top of his head. Actually, he'd never played before. Not with anyone else, anyway....and even by himself, he doubted talking to yourself and closing your eyes pretending you were somewhere that made sense counted as "playing"
Tahki blinked a few times, wondering what they could play.
"Hmmm...if they had some cards, we could play Old Maid...oh! Or maybe Hide 'n' Seek!" she giggled, grinning to herself. She loved games...no one was too old for games, right? Right!
"Old whuh...?" Tal had never even -seen- cards let alone played with them. The only game he could recall at all was a pastel abomination upon anything with a sense of decency called Candyland that Karma and Meka had engaged themselves in a two-hour long deathmatch of after they'd had too much to drink....which had mainly involved them staring blankly at the board and finally throwing the pieces at each other and cursing.
....and this was supposed to be fun? O_o
"Old Maid!" Tahki thought for a moment, wondering how to explain. "See, you have these cards that you have to pass around, and you try to get rid of all your cards...and who ever has the old maid loses!"
What a terrible explaination. Maybe there was something else?
"Ummm...hm. Let's go look for some cards! And then we can figure out what to play, okay?" she suggested, looking a little sheepish.
Tal got up, started forward, then stopped, realizing that he had no idea what he was looking for. "....uhm....what do they look like?" he questioned, likewise feeling a little sheepish. It wasn't like he lived under a rock, these were things he SHOULD know and would have if he hadn't spent so much time holing himself up when he was at home.
Tahki picked herself up off of the counter, leaning backwards a little bit to stretch her back. "Umm...they're rectangular, probably about as big as you are...and they come in a box!" she explained, nodding to herself.
Flapping her wings a little bit, she floated in the air for a moment, looking at the white feien. "And there's 52 of them! For the big games and stuff!" She hoped that might help a little bit. "I'll look in the cabnets, okay?"
Tal still looked a little uncertain, but took wing as well and picked up a leisurely flight speed along the lower shelves, scanning them for anything that met Tahki's description and seeing nothing.
But, wait..! There was a box! He attempted to stop in mid-air, failed and narrowly missed tumbling to the shelftop. When he'd finally managed to land unharmed, he examined the box, finding the top flap and fumbling it open.
With a loud rattle, a scattering of tiny gems from an order not yet unpacked scattered onto the shelftop. Tal seemed torn between three different impulses all at once -- fly away and pretend he hadn't done it, snatch up the shinies, or hurriedly put them all away and hope no one noticed....
Gritting his teeth, fighting draconic impulse, he grabbed the little pinhead-sized gems up by the handful and scooped them back into the box. All right...no more opening strange boxes. Willpower had been kind to him this time, but there were no guarantees about next time.
Tahki flew down close to the ground, pulling open cabinet doors a little bit to venture inside. It was so dark! How could she see anything in there...? And something kept skimming just along her arms, and it felt creepy. But she had to find the cards! She had to!
Flitting from cabinet to cabinet, opening and closing doors, she finally came to one that contained a box of some sort. The arm of a shirt hung over the edge, and the box seemed to be full of random items from clothing to accessories. Maybe there might be some cards in there? Wandering into the cabinet, Tahki did her best to search around the top of the pile. Just sweaters and shirts it seemed, and other soft objects. Perhaps it would be deeper...
However, she wasn't brave enough to do this by herself. Peeking out of the cabinet, she waved her arms a little, hoping Talon would see. "Talon!! I think there might be some in here!" she called.
Talon looked up just as he finished putting the gems away, impulsively spanning his wings to hide as much of the open box as he could in embarrassment.
"Coming!" he called back at her, grunting as he hefted the box back up on its side. There....everything was back where it belonged. He turned to walk away.
*THUD!* *SCATTER*
Tal winced, cringing as he heard the box fall over and the gems scatter again. Squinting his eyes shut, he forced himself to keep moving. This time it wasn't HIS fault...and if anybody asked, he could literally say he hadn't seen it fall over again.
The earth feien took flight across the shop, circling once as he tried to locate Tahki before spying her poking out of one of the larger cabinets and approaching, managing to land neatly without smacking into her.
As a wisp of cobweb tickled one ear, he wiped it away with annoyance. "What is -this-?" he asked, screwing his nose up in distaste at the battered box hidden away in the cabinet.
"I dunno! But it's got all sorts of stuff in it, so I thought I'd give it a look!" she smiled, crossing her arms over her chest and nodding, as if proud of herself. "But...I'm kinda too scared to look through it by myself. Something's creepy about being in there."
She turned her head to look at him, folding her hands behind her back. "Come help me?" she asked, leaning over so that she would be level with him.
Tal looked at the box, not really seeing what was creepy about it. Well...compared to the sorts of things HE'D come to consider creepy. "All right..." he agreed, moving forward without hesitation and flitting up to the rim of the box with a flick of his white wings to peer inside.
There was a tangle of things in the box -- some he recognized, some he didn't, but nothing threatening. "It looks fine." he called over his shoulder. "Nothing bad, Tahki."
Tahki tapped her fingers together a little nervously, floating back into the cabinet. Hmmm...why did the things skimming along her skin seem to disappear? Maybe it was a mental fear. Flitting back to the top of the box, she landed on the edge, and looked over to Talon.
"I'm going inside, okay? Maybe there's some cards buried," she told him, and dove into the soft cloth, sort of swimming into the box.
"All ri--" Tahki dove into the box before he could finish his statement. Tal watched her sift through the contents as he perched on the box's rim like a tiny white gargoyle, waiting for her to find what she was looking for.
He stifled a yawn behind one hand, feeling drowsy again. He didn't want to sleep tonight, but it was starting to look like he wasn't going to get a choice in the matter. As he sat, eyelids beginning to sag, something tickled against the small of his back, making him wince and impatiently reach behind himself to brush it away.
A moment later it was back.
Growling in irritation he turned to find the source of the annoyance, only to find nothing. Giving a snort of frustration, he resumed watching Tahki.
It was several moments before Tahki immerged from the pile of clothing, poking her head out and gasping for air. Somehow, she was slightly dirty, her hair badly mussed from getting around the box. Pushing up a rather long box, the cold feien did her best to free herself, sneezing from dust.
"Ugh...remind me not to do that again, Talon," she whined, picking up the box and lugging it over to the edge of the box. "I think this is i--......EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!"
Okay, now something felt like it had crawled onto her leg, and that was quite enough. In shock, she tripped over the edge of the box, and landed clumsily on the dusty ground of the cabinet.
Tal immediately snapped awake again, dropping down from the rim of the box to land at her side. "What's wrong? What happened??" he asked worriedly. "Are you okay?"
Even as he attempted to help her up, he felt something tickling between his shoulders and bucked his back once sharply to get rid of whatever it was...
And then a sharp pain bloomed in his back as though someone had poked him briefly with a needle.
"Ahh..!!" he winced, abandoning Tahki for a minute to find the culprit as he reached behind himself with both hands. Something scrabbled at his wrist that he missed....missed again, then caught, bringing it out to have a look at it.
Between his hands he held a baby spider, about the size of a fruit fly, but just as rambunctious as an adult. The little b*****d had bitten him. Narrowing his eyes at it, he cocked his arm back and threw it as hard as he could across the cabinet.
"Let's go." he said, offering Tahki a hand and straining to look for the others in the dark cabinet. If there was one, there was likely a whole eggsack that had hatched recently meaning more spiders. Meaning even further that the mother might still be somewhere inside. Maybe if they hurried they could avoid the welcoming committee.
Tahki blushed slightly as whatever crawled up her leg had begun to tickle her knees before wandering off, unable to help but giggle a little bit. That wasn't exactly the feeling she wanted to feel from...well...whatever it was. Glancing up at Talon, she smiled, and tried to calm down.
"But...the cards..." she said softly, reaching up a hand and grasping his lightly, using his help to stand. "And are you okay?"
Instictively, she ruffled her feathers, and another little baby spider fell out, skittering off before she could even notice.
"I won't be if they start biting you too." Tal grumbled, feeling one scurry over his foot and a bit of spiderweb tangle itself in his hair. Ugghhh... no wonder nobody ever claimed any lost items at the shop!
He stepped backwards, feeling another pinprick on his heel as another baby spider, feeling threatened, took a bite out of him in passing. Tal winced and brought his foot down hard, intending to crush the offender, but a little too late as it was already out of reach, using the darkness to its advantage.
If these were anything like the bite he'd gotten from the garden spider he'd chased down in Karma's kitchen, he would be in for some lovely itchy welts for the next few days. Ouch...
Having had quite enough, Tal stormed forward to the cabinet door and gave it a swift kick, making it yawn open. As the cabinet flooded with light, the baby spiders skittered for the shadows into and behind the box.
"Um...m-maybe no cards then," she stammered, quickly skittering out of the cabinet as one of the spiders crawled over her foot to head towards the shadows.
What a mess, though! Her hair was tangled with dust and webs, her feathers slightly "mangled" looking from swimming around in the box. Bah...what she needed now was a bath! She sneezed lightly once again, the dust finally getting to her, a little bit flying off of her.
"I'm sorry...I guess that didn't prove useful either."
"Doesn't matter..." Tal muttered, walking to the edge of the cabinet to examine his foot. The skin around the miniscule pair of fangmarks was already swelling to a puffy pink and would likely be an angry red in another few minutes. Could be worse....they could have been poisonous.
Looking sidelong at Tahki's disheveled state, he sighed and moved to help, pulling strands of spider silk from her hair and shoulders and then, hesitantly undid one of the already-ruined buns the rest of the way. He thought he knew how they went back, but he wasn't quite sure as he combed his fingers awkwardly through her hair to straighten it for lack of having a comb.
Tahki blinked a few times, knealing down in front of Talon as he tried to fix her hair, a seemingly permenant lightly blush on her cheeks. Reach up a hand, she pulled her other bun out, and also began to comb her hair with her fingers, doing her best to get any left over webs out.
"Thank you..." she said quietly, unable to look at him for a moment. Her shoulder started to itch a little bit, but she ignored it, not even noticing the tiny hidden red marks on the edge.
"Almost done." Tal assured her, as though this was something she was just tolerating from him as he tried not to pull her hair when he hit snags...from experience, he knew that pulling his own hair when he attemped to comb it made him near-livid with the pain it caused. After another moment, the last of the web strands and debris were gone and his fingers ran easily through the half of her hair that he was working on.
"There...I think that--" he trailed off, noticing the bite on Tahki's shoulder and feeling suddenly and inexplicably angry with the spiders as his teeth gritted. How---DARE they! They could bite him all they liked but biting, Tahki, that was another ballpark entirely!! They---
"---are -insects-, Talon..." he murmured under his breath aloud without meaning to, trying to make the sudden spike of rage let go. He didn't want to get angry in front of her....and he had no doubt he was being unreasonable in his current state.
"Mmm?" Tahki hummed, peering up at him. "What are insects?"
As she finished combing out the other side of her hair, she proceeded with tying it back up into its usual bun, tucking in bits and pieces to make sure it would stay. Her wings twitched a little bit, more loose dust falling to the ground.
"The spiders....and flies, and moths, and grasshoppers, and all of them. They're insects." he explained, despite the fact that spiders were, in fact, arachnids, but we won't hold that against him.
He looked at the bite again, annoyed by it....angered that it was marring her skin. She didn't deserve that. He gingerly placed his palm over it to hide it, not quite touching it and wishing he could do something about it.
Tal had never attempted to use any of his magic, nor was he aware, in all likeliness that he possessed any...but as he wished it would go away, something within him flexed....some muscle he had, up until then, been unaware of and a warm feeling descended down his arm, focusing into the hand he held over Tahki's shoulder.
He could do little more than stare as his palm and fingertips began to give off a very slight, barely tangible white glow as the heat intensified...
Heal? He could heal...? He nearly touched Tahki's shoulder to apply it to the bite, but snatched his hand back at the last minute, recalling what had happened when Rynn had tried. Tahki had gotten sick. Tahki had been hurt...gods, he'd almost hurt her even worse than the spider had...
Tahki glanced over at her shoulder, growing rather confused. Was there something there? Did that cold spell she have come on without her knowing? Why did he snatch his hand away like that...?
"Is something wrong?" she asked curiously, turning her eyes back up at him again.
Tal examined his hand a moment, the white light fading just as quickly as it had come, and with it the warmth in his arm. "N-No....nothing." he stammered, having had no idea he was capable of that. Even being a fairy, he'd had his mind so preoccupied with other things that he'd forgotten they were magical creatures.
"I just...my hand." he tried to explain. "It got warm. I didn't want to hurt you."
Warm? "How warm? I mean, most others are warm anyway, so I'm used to it. But if they're hot, then it might make me feel a little dizzy," she said, easing back into a sit. It was so hard to sit up on her knees for too long.
"It was....I don't know..." he attempted to summon the feeling again with little success. The strong flex he'd felt wouldn't come again. "Remember that day I gave you my dubloon? The magic that made you sick? ....I think I might have it too. But---" he narrowed his eyes at his fingers in frustration, wishing it would at least give him an inkling of something to work with. Just so he'd know whether he'd imagined it or not, like his night terrors. "---but I can't do it now." he sighed.
Tahki idly scratched at her shoulder, thinking back to that day. Yes...the magic had made her sick, but that was because of how much had been used. Even the slightest bit of human magic was way too much for her, expecially being that small.
"But, I got sick because too much magic had been used, Talon," she tried to explain, remembering what Ares had told her. "I think it would be okay if a feien used magic on me. And if anything, I have a spell to make me cold now..."
Smiling, she took his hand gently in hers. "At least you know it's there, right? Perhaps with practice, it will come again."
"M-Maybe..." he faltered, biting his lip with frustration. Why couldn't he summon it again? What good was having magic if you couldn't call on it? His eyes wandered back to Tahki's shoulder...looking there had been what had done it before.
The bite brought another wave of anger and, though there was no flex this time, there was a flutter as warmth, again, descended down his arm and his fingers, though they didn't glow this time, grew warm again.
"There...!" he said quickly, wondering if she felt it against her hand as she held his. As he pulled his eyes away from Tahki's shoulder to look at his hand, his concentration broke and the feeling immediately began to fade again...
...but it was there, at least! He knew he hadn't imagined it now, and that was enough to satisfy him for the moment as he allowed himself a thin smile.
Tahki giggled a little bit, holding her hand flat against his. "See? Just some practice, and it will come when you will it to," she smiled, tilting her head to the side a little bit.
She rested her free hand on her bent knee, now sitting cross legged as she looked up at him. Her wings twitched a little bit again, her mind trying to wander as she tried to stay focus.
Tal gently pulled his hand out of her grip again. "Practice..." he repeated quietly and then nodded. Knowing now that it was even possible to do, he would most definitely practice it. Healing magic would prove incredibly useful...and the first order of business, as soon as he had a place he could concentrate, would be the newly-acquired spider bites.
But for now, he wouldn't worry about that. He'd not seen Tahki in days -- well, he HAD, but he hadn't had the nerve to approach her after she'd grown up and it would be rude of him to obsess over something else.
Looking around the shop and for the first time realizing that they were alone, he jolted a little. That was something he was starting to find odd as well....whenever he and Tahki started talking to one another, everybody seemed to quickly leave. Did they hate him -that- much?
Tal sat beside Tahki with a soft sigh and allowed himself to lean against her. It wasn't quite the same as when they were both small, but it was comforting nonetheless. "I missed you." he said quietly, the tone a little lame, but the words sincere.
Tahki continued to smile, lifting a hand to gently touch his hair, but stopped, resting her hand on her own shoulder instead, trying hard not to scratch at the tiny bite. Instictively, her wings curled around a little bit, as if to protect them both from the outside world and their jests if they had any. She didn't care if she was older than he was, or grown up. She was still Tahki, and he was still Talon. There wouldn't be anything to change that, would there be?
"I missed you too, Talon," she said softly, looking over towards the door. While she may have missed everyone she hadn't seen in a long while, she always missed him most. Where had everyone gone, anyway? They all had seemed to disappear after she left to speak with Talon, and it felt a little strange.
As though sensing she was thinking the same thing he was, Tal spoke quietly, resting a little more heavily against her "....think they don't like it?" he murmured. "You and me, I mean..." Personally, he didn't care if they liked it or not. Only one person's opinion on that account mattered to him and that was Tahki's. Short of her dismissing him, he had no plans to go anywhere.
"To be honest, I'm not sure," she said, closing her eyes for a moment. "I know that Ares said maybe I wasn't the right one for you, and Merri seems to be a little jealous of me...but Neko said whatever anyone else says doesn't matter. That if it feels right to me, and you, then that's all that mattered, and everything would work itself out."
Opening her narrow eyes, she looked over at him, reaching her fingers over to lightly touch his hair, smoothing it a little bit. "I guess I still worry a little bit, but Neko's right. I'm always trying to make everyone else happy...but I'm happy here with you, and I don't want to give that up even if they do. I'll only leave if you want me to, Talon. Otherwise, I'm happy just like this."
Talon looked up to meet her eyes "I don't want you to go anywhere." he said, shaking his head. "And I'm not going anywhere unless you tell me to. I don't know if I'm "right" for anybody, all I know is I like you." he shrugged a bit. "I don't understand why there has to be more to it than that. But then, there's not much I DO understand, if you ask Karma or Meka."
He allowed her to stroke his hair, feeling a little odd as nobody really bothered with it except him, but not minding as his ears folded back just a bit.
Tahki thought for a moment, thinking about what he said. "What do you mean, why there has to be more to it?" she asked curiously, her ears perking up a little bit. Of course, all it looked like they were doing was wiggling, though.
"I mean, I've been asking other people about the way I feel about you. I thought something was wrong with me, and everybody has their own ideas about it. You ask Yeande, she makes it sound more like she's big game hunting than wanting to be with someone. You ask Meka, he spouts off for hours about why other people are evil and out to use you. You ask Karma, she makes it sound like its a chore to put up with half the things her mate does." he ticked each point off on his finger as he spoke about it.
"I don't understand why it has to be so difficult. This wasn't. Much, anyway..." he remembered the minor snags they hit here and there, but it had never been anything melodramatic. "The more I think about it, the more I think -they're- the ones with the problem." he added resentfully, reaching down to scratch at the spiderbite on his ankle a bit.
Tahki giggled a little bit, holding a hand over her lips. His family certainly sounded interesting, and their answers were rather humerous.
"I asked Neko and Ares about what I was feeling, too, since they'd been around longer than me. Neko wasn't much help...s--I mean, he told me to asked Ares about it. And then Ares told me that what I felt about you was the same way she felt about Arturo..." she explained, looking out toward the window for a moment. "She said that it's a good feeling, and it should be treasured, because sometimes it won't always stay there. She said it wasn't anything to worry about until you end up hurting yourself because of it, and that even then it's still worth it because nothing compares to that one feeling."
Once again, she looked back down at Talon, a smile upon her lips. "I guess everyone has their own descriptions, right?"
"Guess so." he sighed, turning his head to look up at her again. He wasn't as uncomfortable as he'd been when he'd first noticed their vast size difference, but it was still awkward "Don't take it personally when I say I look forward to not having to crane my neck to look you in the eyes again..." he muttered, following the statement with a gentle butt of his head against her shoulder like a cat wanting to be pet.
Tahki gently placed a hand on his head, leaned down, and softly kissed his forehead, smiling as she straightened up again.
"And I'll be looking forward to looking up at you again," she said quietly, her wings drawing further around, gently brushing against his arm as if trying to make a blanket.
Tal likewise spanned his wings out too, attempting to help, but being that they were much smaller now, they barely reached around her, much less had a blanket effect like they used to. It was disappointing, but it was a disappointment he could tolerate.
"....am I allowed to deck anybody who asks if I'm your kid brother?" he asked, only half-joking, his voice muffled by her shoulder and one of his own wings.
"Kid...brother...?" Tahki snickered a little bit before laughing, hugging the younger feien gently as she rested her head against his. "I don't really think anyone would think that, but...I supposed if you had to. But, maybe try not to hit too hard?"
She closed her eyes again, starting to feel rather tired. What time was it, anyway? ...Had they been up all night again? That seemed to happen a lot when she was with him.
"Sun's coming up..." Tal muttered, able to see it plainly out of the corner of his eye without turning his head. He was glad the feiens seemed to be devoid of a rumor mill, otherwise there was no telling what they'd accuse he and Tahki of with as much time as they spent at the shop after everyone had left. Of course, that also meant if someone questioned who'd spilled the box of gems up on the shelf, it wouldn't take them long to trace it back to him... ....but fine, let them. He hadn't taken any.
Despite Tahki being a cold feien, her feathers felt warm to him as he instinctively moved closer to nestle into them.
"Need to get home?" he asked, quietly formulating getting to the guest room without having to face an inevitable lecture about staying out till all hours again. Even if he did, it had been worth it. One less thing to fret over meant one less strain on his already-full mind.
"Do you?" she asked him, lifting her head a little bit to look at him. "If you're going home, then I will too."
He shrugged a bit. "Not if I can avoid it." he sighed. He didn't want to be home....he knew in her own misdirected way, Karma cared about him, but it wasn't the sort of caring he wanted. And anymore the house held bad memories of sinister shadows. The mellow scent of potpourri in the guest room was now the smell he associated with panic.
Right then, that was settled....he let out a deep breath and shifted a bit to make himself comfortable, not allowing himself to relax just yet...he was exhausted, knew it, and likewise knew that he would pass out as soon as he let himself.
"They could charge us rent before much longer..."
Rent? Tahki had to think about that for a moment. That was where someone had to pay to live somewhere, wasn't it? Hmmm...since she didn't exactly have any money herself, that wasn't a good thing.
"Well...no one said we had to stay here," she finally said. Though, where they could go was beyond her.
"I don't know if I can move..." he muttered, one of his wings twitching a bit the way a dog's ear would when tickled. Settling down and getting comfortable had been a mistake...even if Tahki DID decide to leave and go home, he wasn't going anywhere, he was fairly sure. Staying awake was a conscious effort as it was. Nothing short of being carried was going to get him up again.
Tahki smiled slightly, wrapping her arms around Talon lightly, her left hand softly stroking his hair.
"Then, we won't go anywhere," she said softly, closing her eyes one last time. Folding her wings down further, she rested one lightly against Talon like a blanket, her other wing covering herself.
Tal barely heard her as, at the time she was speaking, he was already sinking into a deep sleep. By the time she'd folded her wing around him, he was already out cold. Thank gods for exhaustion or he'd NEVER rest.
RP that occured July 27, 2004: (From the guild wink
Ares glided along the street, flapping her blue and black wings every so often as her red eyes glanced at the houses she passed, beginning to feel a little drained from flying for so long. Why couldn't she find the house? She wanted to see Ruya, and it was as if the streets alone were keeping her from doing so. Fortunately for her, she was persistant, and wasn't about to give up without some sort of fight.
That was, until she found a house that looked rather familiar. Having only seen Kam's house twice before to deliver gifts, she had almost passed it when she recognized the door somehow. Well, there was no use in not trying. Flitting up to the large door, the feien raised a hand to attempt a knock before remembering how quiet that would be. Running her hand through her short blue hair instead, Ares looked around for a moment, wondering if there might have been a doorbell somewhere. Ah! There it was...
Moving herself to the doorbell, Ares placed both of her hands on the little button. She was a little hesitant, but she pushed down, hopefully ringing the bell, and waited to see what would happen.
When the rather loud doorbell rang, Ruya was in the middle of trying to figure out a particularly nasty integral. Her concentration broken by the sound she snarled and hopped off the desk, ready to yell at whoever had broken the silence.
As she flew down the stairs, she remembered that she still hadn't devised a way to open the door. Turning to face back up the stairs, she yelled for Kam.
"Kam! Doorbell!"
Kam, who had just skidded into the foyer from the living room winced at Ruya shrill voice before opening the door.
"Hello?"
There didn't seem to be anyone there for a moment and then Kam spotted Ares.
"Hello? Are you here to see Sunil or Ruya?"
She said it before she spotted the third eye and realized who this must be. Resolving to get more sleep, Kam gestured for Ares to come into the house.
"Ares, correct? You'll want to see Ruya, who I believe is right here."
After Kam moved, Ruya was finally able to see who had been at the door and rushed over to hug her mother, her earlier irritation at being interrupted forgotten.
"Hello mother! How are you?"
Ares raised her brow a little bit when the doorbell sounded, wondering how it could be so loud. Mumbled cries, and then the door opening, only to have been confused for someone else. Until, of course, the human had said her name. Nodding her head a little bit, the black and blue feien floated into the house, and was immediatetly greeted by her daughter. Ah...just who she wanted to see.
"Hello, child," she said softly as she smiled, hugging the little feien gently. "It had been so long since I heard from you, so I thought I'd stop by to see how you were doing. I've been...well enough. What about you, Ruya? How have you been? Has everything been all right?"
Kam shut the door as Ares came in and then beat a hasty retreat. It wouldn't be polite to spy on Ruya and her mother.
Ruya shook her head slightly as her mother asked how she was.
"No, I haven't been all that well. I realized that I don't know who I am or what I am here for. What is my long term goal in life?"
Ruya sighed and then remembered her manners.
"I'm sorry, I haven't even asked you if you'd like anything to eat or offered you a place to rest. We can sit on the couch if you'd like, " Ruya gestured just off to the side into the living room where an ugly orange couch sat.
At least her daughter was well mannered over guests. However, she didn't have to with family, Ares felt. Gently resting a hand on Ruya's head, she smiled down at her.
"I'm quite all right, Ruya," she said quietly, her tail flinching a little bit, "but if you'd like to sit, we can sit."
She glanced around the room for a moment, taking in the surroundings. It certainly wasn't anything like Neko's home, that was for sure, but it was still quite nice. Thinking back to what Ruya was saying, she wondered why she was worried about such a thing.
"Ruya, why do you seem worried about where your life should be leading? What do you mean, you don't know who you are?"
Ruya flew slowly over to the couch and touched down on one of the arms. She had been working on her flying endurance, but it still was very low.
"I mean I don't know what I want from life. I mean Sunil has goals and projects. She has a purpose. I don't have anything to work towards. I don't know what to do with myself. I don't even have magic."
Ruya smiled sadly before continuing.
"I'm sorry to bother you with this, I feel like such a child."
Ares followed after Ruya, folding her wings down over her shoulders as she landed near the small feien. So she was trying to take examples from Sunil? It made sense, as she was the only feien really around here...
"Sweety, everyone has magic," she tried to explain, sitting down on the arm of the couch. "We can't live without it. And trust me...if Merri has it, you do, too. If you'd like, perhaps we could practice a little bit."
Upon the last comment, Ares closed her three eyes, bowing her head a little bit. "It's okay to feel like a child. You technically are still one, even though you've grown so much, but you will always by my child. You can talk to me about anything you want to, Ruya. I'm supposed to be there for you...and I'm sorry that I haven't been. I love you just as much as I love your brothers..."
"Of course you've been here for me, it isn't your fault I live so much farther away. And I suppose I would like to practice magic. At least enough to know what sort of magic I can do."
Ruya ran a hand through her hair in frustration.
"But once again I don't know what I'll do with myself. Do you have any hobbies mother?"
"Hobbies?" Ares echoed aloud, thinking for a moment. "Well, I like to weave...and sewing it kind of fun. I love to read, and when I'm not doing any of those things I'll meditate and practice my magic."
Opening her eyes, she looked to her daughter, folding her hands in her lap. "I guess you could say that, according to books and history, I could be considered some sort of "house mom", but without the cleaning. However, I don't like stereotypes, and I just do as I please. What about yourself?"
Ruya sighed and thought for a moment.
"I take care of all the pixapets, which is sometimes more of a chore than anything else and lately I have started studying math. Its nice, but it gets frustrating sometimes when I can't figure something out. I think I need something like your weaving, something where I make something. How did you discover your magic? I asked Sunil once and she just ignored me."
Ruya frowned and briefly glanced over at the stairs to the upstairs. She could only hope Sunil was too busy to be spying on them right now.
"Well, for the longest time, I didn't think that I had any magic, either," she said softly, closing her eyes once again as she remembered the way she'd found out about her abilities. "The first time I became aware, I was with Arturo. We were talking, and when I touched him, I saw a piece of his past within my mind. At first, I didn't understand what was going on...I didn't know how it happened, it just DID. I couldn't control it, either, until I started practicing."
Ares sighed lightly, her tail curling around herself a little bit. "I'm not sure if it works that way with all feien, but my magic seemed to have just appeared one day. Sometimes I'll gain new abilities, but they just come to me. It's like a natural instinct you can't completely control. However, if you concentrate hard enough, you can turn it on and off."
Ruya ran her hand through her hair again and frowned a little.
"So I might just suddenly find out I have magic? I don't really like the idea of that. How do I learn to control it?"
Ares couldn't help but smirk slightly, opening her eyes halfway. "By practicing," she explained. "You may have the same ability as I do, to see into one's past. I discovered that Merri has it, and I haven't checked with Nero about it yet."
"To see into someone's past? Interesting. Did Merri just stumble into his power like you did?"
Ares nodded slowly, remembering how scared Merrimack had gotten when he first discovered it. It's not easy to calm someone down who thought that their mind was being possessed by something.
"I have a feeling that you would take it much easier than he did, however," she said softly, smiling slightly.
Ruya smiled and nodded.
"Indeed, I am not quite so scared of things as Merrimack can be. Perhaps I don't spend enough time around people to know of my power. I have spent a great deal of time alone recently."
She ran her hand through her hair again and made sure it was tucked behind her ears.
"Maybe I can get Kam to let me practice on her. I assume it works on humans..."
"Mm, yes...it works on anything, actually," she explained. "Humans, demons, flowers, trees...you name it, you can see its past. It might not come right away at first, and it may not make sense, but with practice the images will become clearer."
Sighing lightly, Ares thought for a moment, wondering what else she could say. "So...have you and Sunil been getting along?"
Ruya frowned and once again glanced up the stairs.
"No. She was gone for a while at Maquinar and Quantel's house and just returned. For the most part she avoids me, but I see her lurking around a lot. I think she is working on something, which is never good news. Kam said you and Sunil were once friends..."
Ruya trailed off making the statement more of a question.
Ares nodded, scratching her head a little bit before resting her hand on the back of her neck. Idly, she looked to the flower-gem bracelet she always wore around her right wrist, a symbol to her of her youth.
"Yes, we were once," she said calmly. "However, things changed...we grew up, and everything was different. That's the only explination I can think of."
"I see."
Ruya decided not to pry farther. She really couldn't picture her mother and Sunil ever getting along. In fact she really couldn't picture Sunil and anyone getting along. But in the end it was none of her business.
"So I assume Merrimack is well? Are Nero and father also well?"
"Last time I was able to check on them, yes, they seemed to be doing alright," she assured her. "And Merri...I guess could be better, but he's working on that."
Ares felt that it wasn't nessecary to explain the events that had happened to her brother, especially when she didn't know all of the details herself.
Ruya nodded, happy to know her family was still all doing well. She was out of topics so she leaned forward to hug her mother.
Ares smiled, hugging her daughter back and gently smoothing her short hair. She almost wasn't looking forward to her children growing up, as she'd miss being able to do this.
"Are you feeling any better? Have I been able to help at all?" she asked, her tail thumping once lightly against the arm of the couch.
"Yes, I do feel a little better. I'm probably not a freak feien with no magic and I don't have to change the world to lead a fulfilling life."
Ruya closed her eyes and relaxed, feeling truly at home in her mother's arms.
Ares couldn't help but laugh a little bit, resting her head lightly against the child feien's.
"Even if you didn't have magic, you wouldn't be a freak. You're my beautiful little girl," she told her quietly, holding her a little closer. "And who knows, maybe one day you will change the world with something that do you. And if not the whole world, then maybe the feien world, hm?"
Tilting her head a little bit, she planted a soft kiss on Ruya's head. "I'm proud of you no matter what, you know. Just remember that I'll always love you."
Ruya closed her eyes and drew in a big breath.
"Thanks mom. I'll always love you too."
RP that occured July 28, 2004:
Talonfaust paused in mid-air, taking in the structure that was Neko's house. He'd never actually seen where Tahki -lived- before. It was not-at-all like Karma's home and a bit daunting to look at.
"Well? Are you going or not?" his bondmate devilled from the end of the driveway. She, herself, was anxious to get back to the shop to keep an eye on the latest bloom auction taking place.
Tal narrowed his eyes and spared her a look over his shoulder. "I'm going." he muttered flatly.
"I can't miss you if you don't leave, you know." she prodded, rewarded with a rude gesture over Tal's shoulder as he spanned his wings and moved forward in a glide, pausing briefly to land on the nearby shrubbery. Karma, deciding he'd figure his own way in and, if not, would likely sit out front stewing until she returned, hurried off, leaving her feien behind.
Tal's first stop was the front door which he quickly found closed with no way in. He next moved to the front window, finding it likewise closed. Frustrated, he zipped to the side of the house next....Neko kept three feien...how did she expect them to come and go if she didn't leave any windows ope--AH! There was one!
Without hesitation, Tal landed on the sill of the window that hung only slightly open, leaving an inch gap between it and its frame. He stood pondering it a moment....it was tight, but maybe...
Folding his wings tightly against his back, he wedged himself into the crack and attempted to slip through, realizing his mistake a moment too late as his wings impeded his progress before lodging him firmly in place. ....well, that wasn't how THAT was supposed to have gone, he thought with chagrin as he struggled, stuck.
Merrimack was in the middle of his daily nap when something disturbed him. Laharl had begun to growl at something unfamiliar in the window, as if someone were trying to sneak into the house. Like...a burglar. The small feien had only dismissed it until the rat-sized sheepdog started to bark with his growling.
"Would you shut up? I'm trying to sleep..." he mumbled, rolling over onto his side and curling up a little bit on the desk. He kept his eyes closed until the pixadog barked once more.
"I said quiet!" Merrimack snapped, nearing glaring at the black dog, rolling over enough to sit up on an elbow. "I'm t--...what's that?"
Noticing a bit of white seeming to hang inside from the window, the memory feien finally sat up, running his hands through his short, white and blue tipped hair. So there was an actually reason Laharl was barking... The pixadog, realizing his master had finally gotten up, jumped over to the windowsill and started to bark again at the object trying to break inside. Wait...a feien? Merrimack blinked a few times as the dog began to whine, and cautiously took flight to reach the window. ...A white feien? With black hair... ...Oh dear.
"Can I help you?" he finally asked rather rudely, remembering who this feien looked like. This was Tahki's feien.
Tal froze at the sound of another voice, not having thought he'd disturbed anyone. And then, recognizing Merri from having seen him sleeping in the shop and realizing he was no one hostile, Tal resumed his struggling.
"For one..." he growled, not personally at Merri but moreso at his predicament "...if my wing bends much further out of place, I could wear it for a blasted...cloak...!" Said wing twitched at his side a bit uselessly.
Merrimack raised a brow slightly, his three eyes glancing up at the feien as he landed on the windowsill, his red wings drooping a little bit.
"First of all, your wings are like mine and mommy's. You should be able to fold them over your shoulders," he said rather flatly. "And second of all, you could have just asked to have the window open more."
Crouching down, Merrimack started to tug the large window upwards with all of his might, not being very strong. However, with Laharl's help, they two of them were able to open the window just enough to let the white feien through, though he was a little wary of why the feien was even here.
Tal, still struggling even as they opened the window, spilled onto the inside windowsill in an unceremonious heap, his circlet falling askew and the red feather fluttering out of the back, fluttering to the ground beside him.
Without a word, Talon sat up and attempted to compose himself, straightening his hair, flapping his wings to rid them of any kinks and replacing the feather that had come out.
"I didn't know anyone was in here." he said sullenly. "Would Tahki be about?" he questioned looking at a smear of windowtrack grease on one of his white wings with distaste. He likewise cast a watchful look at Merri's little black pixa. If it was anything like Yeande's were, it would either burst into high-pitched yapping at any moment or slobber all over him. For now, at least, it was quiet.
Laharl crept closer to the white feien, sniffing at his wings for a moment before his tail began to wag. Hmmm...perhaps that meant he was a friend? Merrimack, on the other hand, stayed where he was and folded his arms over his chest.
"No...she went out," was all he said, his wings drooping even further. "I thought she went to the shop, but I could be wrong."
Tal sighed. Great...that was just his luck to come all the way here and the person he was seeking wasn't there. Looking down at Laharl, he hesitated and then offered the back of his hand to the little canine to further inspect. He'd learned the hard way that if you tried to touch them without letting them get to know you first, they bit. Hard.
Noting Merri keeping his distance out of the corner of his eye, but not turning his head from the pixapet, Tal spoke again. "I'm not going to bite you."
Laharl sniffed at the feien's hand before licking it happily, looking over at his master before he started to pant. Merrimack's ears drooping slightly for a moment, but then perked up again, lowering one arm to his side as he kept hold with his other.
"I know that," he retorted, looking off to the side a little bit. He's not going to hurt you...he may be bigger, but he's not going to hurt you. He's a friend of Tahki's...Tahki's friends won't hurt you.
"Y-your name is Talon, isn't it?" he asked quietly, feeling that twinge of jealousy again as he thought about Tahki.
"I'm called that." he agreed, giving Laharl's ears a cursory tousel before finally looking at Merri. "Among other things." he added, knowing his bondmate and Meka both had a plethora of things they referred to him as, his least favorite being "Puff the magic dragon", which had become a favorite of Meka's. The waves of uncertainty and dislike toward him from Merri's direction were almost tangible, he thought with a bit of annoyance.
"And you're Merri." He started to wish Tahki would return. It was bad enough being stuck talking to someone who was a near-stranger, but Merri was making it quite clear that he didn't care for Tal very much, which made it even worse.
Merrimack nodded slowly as he watched Laharl lay his large self down, his tail wagging happily. The fact that Talon knew his name didn't bother him at all, as he was sure most of the others knew him name from Tahki alone. And if not from her, then from anyone who saw the torture he went through so many weeks ago. This was rather awkward for him, not really used to involunteerily being around someone he didn't particularly want to be around. However, there wasn't much of a choice, now was there?
As he thought to himself, the words seem to just come out without him realizing, proving that he was just smart and not wise. "You're not going to hurt her, right? You'll keep her safe?"
Tal started as though he'd been hit. HURT her? Tahki??
"Whuh--no!" he said, sounding offended. "I'd never--" he cleared his throat, putting on a calmer tone "....she means far too much to me." he sighed. "If I were there when anything ever threatened her, it would never threaten again." Despite his spindly frame and the fact he clearly was not capable of dispatching anything large or threatening, the white feien -was- sincere about it.
"....is that why you're looking at me that way?" he asked, turning away from Merri a bit, feeling thoroughly stung and trying desperately not to get angry. He wasn't known for his manners, but even -he- somehow knew that if tahki were to return to find he and Merri in the midst of a brawl, she wouldn't be happy. And....besides, he forced himself to reason, Merri didn't seem like Shux...he wasn't being spiteful. His eyes, all three of them, reminded Tal of a jittery rabbit watching a nearby fox....he was afraid.
He wondered how many others had worried he would be a threat to Tahki...or why they'd think so.
Merrimack looked away, realizing he had offended the feien. Well, that's what he got for not being very social, wasn't it? Clearing his throat, his did his best to hide any emotions he may have felt; jealousy, sadness, even slight anger.
"It's...it's just that, Tahki means a lot to me, too," he tried to explain, narrowing his eyes a little bit. "I just want to be sure that she'll be safe, is all. Since...I can't protect her myself."
He glanced back at Talon for a moment, but quickly looked away again. "She likes you, anyway. I can't do anything about that."
"I hadn't planned on it happening this way, if that makes it even a bit better." Tal muttered, still not looking at Merri. "I don't think Tahki did either. I didn't mean to like her, I certainly don't think she meant to like me." he paused, then, with a conscious effort, turned his head to look at Merri, finding him looking away as well. ....well, THIS particular game of chase-tail was getting them nowhere fast....
"....its good of you to want to protect her." he relented, forcing the words off of his tongue. "I worry for her sometimes....she's very friendly. There are those who would take advantage of that, and--" he trailed off and decided he didn't need to go on. He was fairly sure Merri could fill in the blank.
"That's what I'm afraid of," he admitted, closing his three eyes as he spoke. "Tahki's sometimes too nice for her own good. She feels like she owes something to everyone she meets...even that p***k that decided to pick on me out of the blue."
There was that rude nature again. Running a hand through his hair, he sighed lightly, resting the hand against the back of his neck. Opening his eyes slowly, he almost looked sad for a moment, though he mostly looked empty.
"I suppose I owe you an appology," Merrimack said quietly. "I didn't really make a good first impression, did I?"
"Not as though I'VE been a blasted strawberry shortcake either..." Tal said, smoothing his ebony bangs back from his forehead, starting to let his guard down a little. "....and who was that?" he asked, quirking a brow as he recalled the strange dark-skinned feien who had appeared seemingly out of nowhere and had attacked Merri that day at the shop.
At the time, not knowing Merri, he'd assumed he'd done something to deserve it...
"Tahki said his name was Calico," he said, glancing over at Talon. "Apparently, he gets into fights with a lot of others. She said to be careful if I'm here by myself, as well, because he's still looking for me for some reason."
Stretching his wings out before letting them droop again, Merrimack sat down on the windowsill, his legs growing tired from standing. "I haven't seen him since that day, but Tahki said she had. He didn't hurt her, thank the Gods, but she said she was still scared because he was just plain intimidating."
Tal narrowed his eyes a little in dislike. "Calico..." he repeated, making a mental note of the name. "I'll keep an eye out for that one." he said with finality. He didn't like instigators to begin with, but bullies were even worse. Feeling his earlier dislike of Merri recede a little, he seated himself at a respectable four inches away from the other feien.
"You ought to get something to protect yourself." he reasoned. "And learn to use it. There's no reason for that."
Merrimack's wings instinctively started to curl around himself when Talon moved closer, but he kept himself visible, trusting the feien at least that much.
"Well, I have some armor that Neko bought for me...but, no weapons. I'm...I'm too scared to fight," he said sheepishly, looking over toward the desk where his supplies were. "Just...string and rocks."
String and rocks....what could you do with string and rocks...? Tal thought for a moment, his mind turning to draconic combat. A mother dragon, when protecting her nest, used her fangs, her neck and... "Tail..." Talonfaust muttered aloud, following Merri's gaze over to the desk before getting up and flitting over to it without waiting for permission.
He seized up a piece of string and one of the larger pebbles, kneeling for a moment, his back to Merri, doing something with the two items.
Merrimack blinked his three eyes a few times, glancing over at the desk again. What was he doing? And why did he mention something about a tail? He didn't have one, either though his mother did, so what brought that up? Standing up, the feien's curiosity was getting the better of him as he tried to see what Talon was doing.
Tal turned around a moment later, the stone having been firmly tied to the end of the length of string, lapped several times so that it would not slip loose. It had been a spur of the moment idea, but he'd had to see if it worked. Notions to create rarely took him and when they did, he took them at their full advantage. Walking to the edge of the desk, he let the rock hang pendulously from the string, swinging gently back and forth.
"One way, is to make sure you keep him at his distance...." he remarked, winding a length of the end of the string around his hand so he wouldn't lose his grip and then gave a heft of his arm, turning sharply to the left. The pebble whickered through the air with a soft "whiff!", tethered to the string so it wouldn't fly off. He grunted with the effort of controlling the velocity the rock had picked up, giving it a swing in the other direction, and then popping his wrist back as the pebble snapped back. He doubled over as it collided with his belly, not hurting him so much as he was attempting to absorb the shock as he fumbled the pebble between his hands before standing again, letting out a long breath.
"If you throw rocks, they're lost. But if you have it so the rock comes back to you...." he unwound the string from his hand and flitted back to the windowsill, dropping his creation in front of Merri.
Merrimack watched in a bit of awe as Talon demonstrated the makeshift weapon, wincing as he watched the rock hit him. So, it was more of a strength thing; depending on how much force and strength one swung with would vary the damage done. Interesting... Picking up the end of the strong, the memory feien heaved the peeble upwards so that he could get a closer look at the craftsmanship.
Looking carefully where the string was tied, he began to wonder if it was something that would eventually come loose. Closing his hand around the string, right over the rock, Merrimack concentrated for a moment, a faint glow emitting from his hands. He'd practiced this enough before, so it shouldn't be too hard, right? Removing his hand, he again inspected the string, making sure it had mended together. NOW there wasn't as much of a chance to lose the weapon.
"This is quite an interesting weapon, Talon," he finally said with a nod, looking up at the white feien. "In a way, it's like a heavy whip, am I right? I could throw it out, or I could swing it. Not as flexible, of course, and not as quick to come back, but it's not meant to be a direct weapon, now is it?"
Tal shrugged and reseated himself. "What its meant to do is keep your attacker at a distance. Its the way mother dragons use their tails to keep scavengers away from their eggs. Its not something you would actively go looking for blood with as its useless at close-range, but if this Calico were to come after you again, he wouldn't be in much of a fighting shape after getting a rock in the face. I'm sure *I* wouldn't be..."
Tal didn't know much about weapons, honestly...or how to use them. This was mainly because he'd never practiced them nor had the need to. He likewise didn't expect Merri to attempt to master such an oddball weapon, but maybe if he grew confident with one, he'd move on to others. Talonfaust didn't deny that he'd find satisfaction in overhearing from Tahki that Merri had held his own should his attacker try again.
Merrimack tightened his grip a little bit on the rock, his ears perking up slightly as he seemed to be a little skeptical of the object. Could it really keep Calico away? After all, the dark feien didn't even look phased when Nero had held his rapier to the other. Really, there was only one way to find out, but that wasn't particularlly something he'd be looking forward to. Keeping his eyes on the newfound defense item, he couldn't help but ask one more question.
"Why help me?" It was as if he had to ask everyone that gave him the slightest time of day this question. "It's not that I don't appreciate the effort, but...why?"
"Why not?" came the answer in a flat tone. "I hate people like that...they're no better than scavengers. They look for the small and the weak and try to prey on them. Where's the honor in that?" He sighed a bit and rubbed the back of his neck "Besides, if you learn to protect yourself, you can learn to protect others next." he reasoned, remembering Merri stating earlier that he was unable to protect Tahki.
Merrimack opened his mouth to say something, but quickly shut it again. He was right, but would he ever have the courage to do something like that? He barely had to nerve to tell Calico off when he started threatening his brother, so what was the chance that he'd do such a thing as try to even hurt him? ...While it was slim, the chance was still there, and that's all he had to rely on.
"Thank you," he said quietly, looking down. "I'll...try."
Tal nodded but said nothing, looking off into space for a moment before getting up, arching his back to pop it. It looked like Tahki wouldn't be coming after all...he'd paid attention on the way over and was fairly sure he could find his way home...and from there, find his way to the shop to see if she'd gone there.
"If he hurts you again....or Tahki...." Tal's expression hardened. "hell, if he LOOKS at her the wrong way, tell me. I'd like words with him." His tone suggested words weren't -all- he'd like. "I'll go now." he added quietly, fanning his wings once to ensure they hadn't cramped up after being squashed against his back when he'd gotten stuck before padding back to the open window, feeling a bit relieved that the exchange was nearing its end....he still wasn't much for being social. Even though Merri was nowhere near as aggravating as some of the others he'd met, it had still been an act of force to hold a conversation with him when, for all intents and purposes, all he'd wanted to do was leave once he'd been assured the reason he'd come in the first place wasn't there.
Still....maybe he'd helped someone for once....that thought in itself, while it didn't make him feel -good- made him feel as though the trip hadn't been entirely a waste.
"I'll tell Tahki that you were here, if you don't find her," he said, lifting his wings so that he could take flight to the desk. "I'm sure she'll be happy to hear that."
He stepped over to the edge of the windowsill, but stayed where he was for a moment, as if to enssure that the other feien was leaving.
"Thank you." Tal muttered under his breath, though it was loud enough for Merri to hear. The window being a little wider this time, he didn't have trouble squeezing through. It felt good to be back outside again and he breathed deeply of the outdoors air, fanning his wings against the cool breeze for a moment before pushing off of the sill and flapping his wings quickly a few times to gain momentum before gliding with practiced ease back around to the front of the house and out of sight.
Merrimack looked over his shoulder as Talonfaust flitted off down the street, watching the white feien become a mere dot as he flew away. Once again, he looked back to the wrapped up pebble clutched within his grasp, his wings flapping once to lift himself into the air. Floating over to the desk, the memory feien left Laharl sleeping where he was, figuring he'd guard the window.
Landing safely on the desk, he knelt down, setting the pebble gently down on the surface as if it were fragile enough to break. Wandering over to the corner of the desk where his supplies her, he carefully picked up his armor, helmet, one more pebble and another string, and made his way back to the unique weapon, setting everything down. Wait...he was forgetting one more thing. Rushing back over to the supplies, Merrimack picked up his bowls of red and blue paint before going back to get the white and black ones. All right...that should be everything. No, wait...one more bowl of paint! Once again, the little feien hurried over to the supplies on the other side of the desk, picked up the bowl of yellow paint, and carefully made his way back to his spot. Finally settling down, Merrimack nodded to himself, already feeling tired, but felt this was something he had to do. He'd clean off the armor some other time...right now, this was needed, and it was the only thing he could think of that would help him. Picking up the red paintbrush, he began to paint on the armor.
~~~~~~~~~~

"Almost...finished..." Merrimack mumbled to himself, brushing on the finishing touches to his acorn helmet. He had to borrow some of Ares' string for the hair, but it still worked, and he knew she wouldn't mind. Holding the helmet back enough to fully look at it, he smiled slightly to himself, almost smirking. "Not my best work, but it'll do for practice."

Setting the black paintbrush back in its bowl, the small feien gently set the now painted and decorated object down on the surface of the desk, and began to look around for something else. There had to be something to hold all of this up, right? Something...something... Spotting a rather skinny paperweight on the desk out of the corner of his orange eyes, he nodded, deciding that he'd use that for a stand. Quickly making his way over, Merrimack sized the paperweight up, finding it to be nearly the perfect size. Now, it was only a matter of moving it. Resting against the makeshift stand with his shoulder, the little feien began to push as hard as he could, doing his best not to slip on the surface of the desk, and after a moment was able to tilt the weight enough to let it topple over. THUD! Quickly glancing about, the slightly skittish feien made sure that no one was around as he began to roll the weight away, getting it closer to his other two supplies. ...Now to get it standing back up, that was another tricky part.

Fortunately for him, a certain ninja had come into the room to check up on the little feien. Watching Merrimack struggle with the paperweight was rather amusing, but it also made him feel some pity for the little fairy.

"Would you like help?" Juubei said quietly, stealthily appearing before the desk.

Of course, that always freaked Merrimack out, never once actually SEEING the ninja wander into the room. "Yes..." he said simply with a sigh, giving up on lifting the object himself.

Picking up the weight with great ease, he carefully placed it upright on the desk before leaning over a little bit to see what the feien was doing. His dead golden eyes showed curiosity where it normally showed no emotion, the shuriken hidden within his shirt clinking together slightly.

"May I watch?" he asked, finally realizing that the young fairy was training for some reason or another.

Merrimack hesitated for a moment, not really wanting an audience while he practiced. Picking up the armor, he carefully lifted it to place it over the stand, allowing it to rest just on the top. Moving to get the helmet, the small feien nodded slowly as he tried to affix the "head" to the "body."

"I supposed you could. But please don't say anything," he finally said, motioning for Juubei to have a seat. "I want to try to do this by myself."

Watching the ninja kneel down on the carpet as he turned around, Merrimack hesitated once again. He had no idea what he was really doing, but he felt it was necessary. This was all right, right? To have a target that looked like another feien? Picking up the end of the string to the defense mechanism Talon had given him, he glanced at the second one he had made himself. One was heavy enough as it was, so the second would have to come when he got stronger. ...Or rather, IF he got stronger.

Lifting the weapon a little higher off of the ground, the memory feien looked on toward his masterpiece. The masterpiece that was painted in red and yellow, with red and yellow "hair" hanging from its head. The makeshift sculpture he would now label as Calico.

Grasping the string firmly in both of his hands, the small feien twisted his body towards the left, holding his arms out a little bit. It was hard... The little pebble felt heavy in his hands, but he couldn't give up. He was too weak, but no more would he let that be an excuse. Looking over his shoulder, he noticed Juubei give him a nod of approval. Hesitating one last time, Merrimack twisted his body just a little bit more before he swung around to his right as fast as he could, and concentrating all of his strength into his arms, allowing the pebble to fly out in a swing with force. His ears twitched as the loud CRACK! sounded, the tiny rock smacking hard against the armor, the string jerking from the sudden interruption in movement. Nearly dropping the weapon as it dropped down towards the right, swinging in his hands, Merrimack forced his three eyes to look at the model close by him. It was hard to make out, but the bark had a small welt in it from the contact, and a little bit of the dry paint had chipped off with a few splinters, scattered lightly on the surface of the desk. That wasn't so bad...and a part of him certainly felt better with all of the pent up frustration he had inside. Yes...yes, perhaps things wouldn't be so bad after all.

Twisting to the right, the little feien prepared to wing again, ready to swing his heart out until he couldn't stand anymore.

whif...CRACK!

I've officially met Talonfaust today, as he stopped by looking for Tahki. I guess I can see what she sees in him, but I still don't understand completely. He's kinda rude, and doesn't talk a whole lot. He seemed rather appauled when I asked a simple question, and... He reminds me of myself. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but...I think he's what I would be like if I had more courage. If I was braver. If I was...stronger. I think it's safe for me to trust him.

He made some sort of defense weapon for me before he left, out of a pebble and string. He explained that it worked kind of like a dragon's tail, where the mothers would bat at enemies to keep them away with their tails. Interesting... I wonder how he knows so much about dragons, anyway? No matter... He said I could possibly keep Calico away with this, if he tries to attack me again. Maybe...I could protect Tahki, too. I doubt that I could, but maybe...just maybe.

I made a Calico statue out of my armor and helmet to train myself. Eventually, I want to be able to use two of these at one time if I can get strong enough, as one is heavy on its own. Juubei was watching, and when I was finally done practicing (because I couldn't lift the pebble anymore), he said I did very good. I'll have to keep these hidden, so that mommy doesn't get suspicious of me and wonder why I'm learning how to use these. One day, I'll be able to protect her, as well...I swear that much. I swear it.

Event #7: It's a new pet! Neko wants some answers, the mystery continues.

"What...is it?"

"I don't know, but it's kind of...creepy."

"Creepy? It looks like anything but."

"I think it's ADORABLE!!" Tahki hugged the blue and white notion gently, ignoring the fact that it wanted to get away.

"Of course you would...you think anything is cute," Merrimack sighed, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Merri..." Ares shook her head, her wings folding down over her shoulders.

"What??"

Neko couldn't help but chuckle outside of the door, listening to his feien gawk at the new creature he had brought home over night; something called a notion. While it would seem to disappear every so often, it was really just hiding in Neko's head at times, which felt very odd to him. ...Anything being inside of his head had to be odd, anyway. His tail flicked a little bit, ears twitching slightly as he heard footsteps from behind.

"I don't care what you say about it, Miki's staying," he said quietly, closing his eyes as he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist. He leaned back against Domonic gently, resting his own hands on top of the human's.

"I wasn't going to say anything," Domonic sighed, resting his chin lightly on Neko's shoulder. "Though I'm curious as to what made you find something to live in your mind. You hate any invasion of your thoughts."

Neko opened her eyes halfway, listening once again to the conversation happening in the other room.

"Okay okay, it's not creepy!" Merrimack cried, hiding behind his mother. "Now keep it away from me!"

Tahki blinked a few times, wondering why the smaller feien was so afraid of the little notion. It was smaller than he was! Possibly about as big as one of the tiny plushies they had...if not a little bigger. Miki blinked a few times, its tail swishing as it stopped struggling in Tahki's hands, realizing the feien wasn't going to cause any harm.

"Don't worry, Miki! Merri's just a scardy cat," the cold feien smiled, facing the notion toward herself again, her wings drawing close to her back. "I don't know why he'd be afra--"

"I am NOT afraid!" he protested, peering out from behind Ares. The blue and black feien sighed quietly, rolling her eyes as her tail lightly bopped Merrimack on the head. "...Okay, so I am. How do I know it's not going to bite me or anything??"

"Bite?" Miki piped up, blinking a few times. "Bite bite? MI!"

Ares reached a hand towards the little notion, gently touching its head. Miki only smiled, its tail curling up happily.

"See, its not going to bite you," she assured her son, stepping out of the way so that he couldn't hide behind her anymore. "Think of it like a kitten. Only...it probably will end up talking more than Winter does."

Neko looked over at Domonic, who still had his head on his shoulder. "I suppose it's something I'll have to get used to, now isn't it?" he explained, hardly able to see him with his right eye being covered by his headband.

Domonic turned his blue eyes to look at the demon hanyou's, still trying to get used to the cosplay Neko insisted on dressing up in. How long would it be kept up, anyway? Not that he really minded, but it was starting to get annoying to only see one eye.

"There's something you’re not telling me," he sighed, releasing Neko before making him turn around to face him. "It has something to do with that big rock you got about a month ago, doesn't it? I can feel some sort of energy in that thing."

Neko stuffed his hands into his pants pockets, his tail lashing to the left once. Why did he have to be interrogated on the things he owned all of the time? So he liked artifacts and magic books... Did that really matter? Though, with everything he did own, it was a mystery as to why they didn't try to find a spell to turn him back into a woman. Ignoring the question, the demon hanyou looked up at the human, his own thought coming to mind.

"There's a lot of things you don't tell me, either, Domonic," was his final retort. "For instance, why do you have a relic in your possession? An angelic one, no less."

Domonic sighed in defeat, shaking his head as he turned to leave down the hallway.

Neko reached out a gloved hand from his pocket, quickly grasping onto his lover's white-sleeved arm. "Dom..."

He stopped, looking over his shoulder at the other man. Hesitating for a moment, he turned back around, running a hand through his short blonde hair.

"Right now, I can't tell you everything," Domonic told him, looking rather apologetic. "One day, I will. One day, I'll know everything myself, and I can tell you everything you could possibly want to know."

"You didn't come here on your own, did you?" Neko asked, still determined. "Someone sent you, didn't they? Who sent you?"

Domonic bit his lower lip softly, looking away for a moment before shaking his head slowly.

"I can't tell you right now," he said again. Taking a step closer to the other, he gently placed his hand against his cheek. "But you have to trust me." Leaning over, Domonic kissed Neko softly on the lips.

"Everything will be clear soon. I promise," he assured him before turning again, walking down the hallway, and making his way down the stairs.

Neko watching him leave, his un-pocketed hand clenching into a tight fist, his tail lashing once more before calming down. Relaxing his hand, the demon hanyou turned around once more and leaned against the wall lightly, his ears twitching as he listened to his feien.

"Mi!" Miki piped up, squirming free from Tahki's grasp finally and landing on the desktop. It began to skitter around, looking curiously at the pixacats and pixapups that were scattered around.

"Be careful, Miki!" the cold feien giggled, wandering after the notion.

Ares patted Merrimack lightly on the head, bringing him out from behind her once more. "Tahki, make sure it stays away from the paint and dust," she called out to the other feien before looking down at her son. "Are you sure you're okay? Maybe you should take a nap for a bit..."

Merrimack scrunched up his nose as he watched the little creature, not paying too much attention to his mother. "Maybe later," he said, distracted. "I have to make sure that thing really isn't going to try to eat me."

She shook her head slowly, rolling her three eyes. "As you wish," she stated, looking on as Tahki chased after the notion.

Merrimack

I saw Talon again yesterday. He had dragged me to his house when we were suddenly referring to training. He has this tree that he drew pictures on, and beat up the poor thing. Interesting...it was similar to the "Calico" dummy I had made the other day. So, for more training, we made a Calico dummy on his tree, made out of red and yellow petals. Though, we didn't get to train a whole lot...we got to talking instead. About my fears, and about his night terrors.

Apparently, I'm the only one who seems to understand his problem, but I can't explain why he's having them, which really frustrates me. I take pride in being able to figure most things out easily, but Talon doesn't know enough to give me more clues. Usually, the things that he's seeing are caused by some sort of trauma, but he doesn't recall being scared of anything. Though, during our talk, we may have figured out why I'm always tired...

Anyway, I invited him to stay at my house for the night, since he only seems to sleep well when he's with Tahki. And...well, he did sleep. Sporadically, but he DID sleep. So my theory is that he may have some major trust issues. Though he seems to trust a few of his surroundings, he said he gets a little antsy when it deals with something unfamiliar. And he also doesn't seem to trust his bondmate very much... Maybe that also plays a factor in his terrors?

I wish I could help him, but there's not really anything I can do. It's just something he'll have to get over himself, and...Tahki just happens to be a little bit of comfort. ...Talon and I have decided to train with each other, since we seem to have the same goal: to protect Tahki. Talon's helping me devise a plan to get Calico back for hurting me...because it seems I'm not the only one he's hurt. We'll get him...I swear it.

As a final note, mommy seems to be going away for a couple of weeks. I'll be under Tahki's charge while she's gone, visiting daddy's old home. Interesting... I don't really want her to go, but she seems to have her heart set on it. So...I guess I'll agree to it this time. I'll miss her, but there's not much I can do, is there? Mommy...be safe.

Tahki

Talon came over last night!! It was so cool...but we stayed up late again. That always seems to happen, doesn't it? It was kinda weird at first, though, because it was Merri who brought him. Merri went out on his own?? Maybe he's finally getting better! I'm glad Merri's starting to trust others, though. I ca

I found out that Shala's been hurt by Calico, too. But but but...how?? When did this happen! Shala...I should go visit him! I haven't seen him in a while...I wonder if he's okay now? Talon said he's going to help Merri beat him somehow. ...But, I'm scared. What if Merri gets hurt again? And what if Talon gets hurt, too? I promised Talon I'd tell Corvus or Yeande or Ares if they were to fail but...but...if Calico hurts Talon...

I also heard that Rakuen seems to have gone away. He's become a gemstone! ...So, he died. I wonder how that happened...? Maybe he's in a better place now? I hope no more go away any time soon. I don't want my friends to leave...no no no! No friends go awa

Ares is going somewhere for a little while. She said something about visiting Arturo's home! That should be fun...I hope she'll come back okay! And make it there okay...I wish there was a way for me to know. Mmmm I wanna know I wanna know! I wonder what Arturo's home is like? And how come he came from a different place than us? I don't understand. I'll know one day. One day...

~~~~~~~~~~
Ares
I'm rather glad that Merri seems to be making friends. I wonder what makes this one so different? Maybe its because Tahki's always talking about that boy...
Arturo came to visit me today. He said that next week will be Caterina's one-year anniversary, and that he wanted to go back to Connecticut to visit her grave. He asked me to come with him...
So, possibly tomorrow, I will be setting out on a journey with him to Connecticut, so that I may see where he once lived. He told me that he wanted to take me there once before, and I'm rather interested in seeing where he'd come from... Perhaps I could learn more things about the feien while I'm there. Whatever may happen, I'll be with him... As we haven't really seen much of each other lately, perhaps this will be good for the both of us.
I explained to Neko what was going on, and she seemed to understand... She even told me it would probably be a good idea. Wait...I should probably be saying he, now shouldn't I? I wonder how long this transformation will last, anyway? Hopefully not too much longer...it's slightly irritating. No matter...I'll have a couple of weeks to get over it. I hope...Merri will be okay while I'm gone. Tahki, take good care of him...and when you can, Nero too.
RP that occured July 31, 2004:
A humid, wet day. Arturo was still trying to adjust to this type of weather. Back when he lived in Connecticut, humidity did not even factor into his world.
When the sun peeked out of the clouds, it was scorching. Arturo was thankful for his light coloring, otherwise this flight would, no doubt, be far more difficult. At last, his destination was in sight. A house that had become almost estranged recently, as he had not had the chance to visit it for a while.
Landing neatly on the windowsill, Arturo rapped his knuckles against the pane, then crossed his arms over his chest. His expression was expectant. He was fairly certain that Ares would be home, since he had checked for her at the shop first.
Tahki, of course, was sitting by the window, and nearly rolled off at the sudden sound. Picking herself up, but not being smacking her head against the wall, she did her best to try to open the window being seeing who it was.
"MMmmmmph! Neko needs to do something about this one getting stu--ACK!!" she started to grumble, but then went flying backwards as she managed to push the window up much further than she intended.
"What is it, Tahki?" Ares asked, not looking up from her book. She was on the desk, standing over the pages to read.
Peeking over the edge of the sill, she blinked her yellow eyes a couple of times before smiling. "It's an Arturo!" she declared with a giggle.
Of course, that would get her to leave her book. Stepping off of the large knowledge source, Ares walked to the edge of the desk, peering toward the window curiously. "Arturo?" she called out.
Arturo stepped lightly into the room, arms clasped behind his back. "Indeed," he replied, smiling. He couldn't help raising an eyebrow at Tahki, who reminded him so much of that nuisance Gogol, but his attention was soon back on Ares. He fluttered closer to her, expression emotionless but eyes warm.
Seeing Ares always cheered him up.
"I've missed you," he muttered, brushing his thumb over her cheek. Mentally, he willed Tahki to leave.
Hmmm, maybe that worked. Tahki's eyes caught sight of a rather beautiful orange and black color, fluttering past the window. "Butterfly!" she cried out before zooming out of the window to chase after it.
Ares smiled slightly, her black and blue wings fidgeting on her shoulders a little bit. "I missed you, as well," she told him, nuzzling her cheek against his hand a little bit. "How have you been doing?
Arturo was silent for a moment, lips pursed slightly in thought. After a bit, he took her hand and led her to the window sill, sitting down. The sun was warm on his back, making his bright feathers glisten slightly.
"I'm well enough," he replied, resting his elbows on his knees and leaning forward. He decided not to bring up Nero's condition. Best not to worry Ares. "I was just thinking that it had been a while since I last saw you. So - I came."
He turned his face towards her, smiling faintly. "And you, Ares?"
Ares folded her bi-colored wings back down over her shoulders as she sat down, her tail curling around herself a little bit. She thought for a moment, folding her hands in her lap, as if it were a puzzling question. In reality, she was just trying to decide if Arturo was being truthful about his answer or not.
"I've been all right," she finally said, nodding her head a little bit. "Not too much has been happening around here...but I got to see Ruya recently, so I'm satisfied that all of our children seem to be okay at the moment."
"How is she?" Arturo asked, turning to Ares. "I rarely see her. Nero and I both miss her." He paused, then continued, without waiting for Ares' answer. "I am glad to hear that you are doing well, Ares. And Merri? He's all right, too? Is he here?" Arturo looked around, wondering where his son was.
"She seems to be all right. She seemed to be a little lonely before I got there, but I think things are okay now," she said, also looking around for a moment, trying to see if Merri was there or not. "And Merri...I think he's somehow gotten a new friend. Merri??"
She waited for a moment before calling out again, just to be sure. "Merri, are you still here?"
"Mmmph..." came a mumbled reply from the desk, one of the drawers open a little bit.
Ares raised a brow before turning her three red eyes back to Arturo. "I think he's sleeping..."
Arturo chuckled. "A real whirl of activity around here," he drawled, shaking his head. He'd see Merri later. It was better this way, privacy with Ares.
"Ares, I have a favor to ask of you," he said slowly, tapping the tips of his fingers together.
Ares glanced at his hand gesture, wondering what that action might have been for. "Yes?" she piped up, stretching her arms out for a moment.
"I need to return to Connecticut for a while. A week from now, it's Caterina's one-year summonday. I'd like to visit her grave." A deep breath, then Arturo continued. "And I'd like for you to accompany me. You don't have to if you feel that it would be awkward, or if you're unwilling to leave Merri - I understand. But I'd be honored if you came," he said, giving her a slight smile.
Ares blinked a few times, her tail thumping against the windowsill lightly. He wanted her to come with him? Looking over to the desk again, she wondered what Merrimack might think of that. Though, it was really her decision, wasn't it? She couldn't limit herself to everything he demanded... Her life wouldn't exist if she did that. Thinking about it for a moment, the time feien lifted a hand to run her fingers though her short blue hair, resting her hand on the back of her neck. It would be a good chance to be with Arturo, and she would get a chance to see his home, just as she wanted to. Just as...he wanted her to.
"How long will we be gone?" she finally asked, looking up at him as she smiled a little bit.
"It'll take a while to get there," Arturo replied, remembering how long it took for him to fly down. Then again, he was dying at that point, and carrying a book. This time it would be much easier.
"If I had a guess? A week to get there, stay a day or two to rest and 'see' Caterina, then a week to get home. So, a while."
She was smiling. A good sign. He rewarded the gesture with a smile of his own, warmer than usual, and bent forward to kiss her slightly. "It's a really beautiful flight, really. I couldn't really appreciate it when I flew down, but it's very interesting to see everything gradually change." he commented, drawing back.
Ares closed her eyes partially as he kissed her, looking up at him as he drew away. She was always rather partial to scenery...and if what he said was true, then that was fine by her.
"I would love to accompany you, Arturo," she agreed officially, nodding a little bit. "When do you plan to leave?"
"Soon. Possibly tomorrow. I have some business to attend to first, but it shouldn't be too hard," he replied, grinning. Ares' agreement to come had really just made his day. "When that's done - whenever you're ready is fine."
He leaned forward, brushing his lips over hers again. "Thank you," he muttered quietly against her mouth.
Ares closed her eyes for a moment, finding herself blush at the feel. Reaching a hand over, she gently laid hers on top of his, her red lips curling up into a slight smile.
"I'll be ready whenever you are," she assured him.
"I'll come for you soon," he promised, shifting his hand so he could hold hers in his. "Then we'll go."
Sighing, Arturo stood up, gently pulling Ares up with him. "But I need to go. Arrangements to be made and the like." One final kiss before he dropped her hand and turned to the window. "I'll be back as soon as I'm able," he called, the dropped from the sill.
Ares kissed him back and waved after him. "I'll be waiting, then," she called out.
RP that occured August 1/2, 2004: (Part 1)
Merrimack's eyes twitched slightly as he sat on the desk, tangled up in blue and red string. He'd been trying for the last 15 minutes to get untied, but Miki continued to fix its work if he tried to move something. Drumming his fingers on a bent knee, the little feien watched the notion from his spot, waiting for a moment of distraction. While sitting there, he'd already worked out a plan to get the string off quickly... it was only a matter of getting it off without the other putting it back.
"This is fun, mi!" Miki giggled, flapping its little wings slightly. "We should do this again!"
"Only if you stay away from me," he sighed, rolling his eyes a little bit. How was he going to get any practicing done at this rate? The Calico model was already set up, waiting to go. However, the notion hid his "tail" somewhere...
A white shape approached one of the closed windows nearby, battering itself softly against it all around the frame as though looking for a fault it could slip in someplace and failing to find one. After a moment, it dropped to the windowsill and Tal sauntered up to the glass, cupping his hands to peer in against the glare before drawing back a fist and knocking sharply to get anyone nearby's attention.
"MI!" Miki cried, quickly ducking into an open drawer of the desk.
Merrimack blinked a few times before realizing the opportunity, and freed himself from the string. Extending his wings, he took flight over to the window, almost missing the white figure standing on the other side. This was amusing...as the window had been left open to let Tahki back inside whenever she decided to come home. Running a hand through his white and blue tipped hair, he started to make his way back to the edge of the window sill.
"Are you going to stand out there all day, or are you coming inside?" he asked, waiting just to be sure.
Tal paused, blinking. He hadn't noticed the gap near the bottom due to the way the shadows struck it and felt a flush creep into his face as humiliation prickled over him "Yes..." he sighed, giving his wings one last fan before ducking to get inside, still a bit sore from having spent most of the morning and afternoon practicing the different techniques the book offered. "Here by yourself?" he questioned, not wanting to get any antennaes up that didn't need up in case Merri's parents were near.
"Sort of," was his reply, taking wing back to the desk. "Miki's hiding in the drawer."
Miki peeked out from the shows, its bi-colored eyes almost glowing in the darkness. Its tail hung out over the edge of the container, twitching slightly.
Tal looked at the little notion and rolled his eyes. Great....one of THOSE things. Every time his bondmate's friends came over for a visit, the living room was full of the little bastards and, inevitably, at least ONE of them would go off wandering and come into his room to harrass him.
"Will it tell?" he asked in a lowered tone so that Miki wouldn't hear.
"Probably not. I could convice it of otherwise, anyway," he sighed, folding his arms across his chest. Giving the notion a sidelong glance, he watched it cower back into the shadows, the tail slipping into the darkness.
"So anyway, what brings you here?" Merrimack asked, kicking the tangled string off to the side.
Tal stretched his arms a bit, keeping the muscles moving so they wouldn't have a chance to cramp up on him.
"I've been looking into some things. I'm not done, not by a long-shot, but I've learned a few tricks I thought best to pass on to you...that way if one of us forgets, hopefully the other will remember. That and what good is training if we don't stay on the same page, eh?"
He let out a breath and cast a look around the room, quietly envying how much quieter this house seemed in compared to his own. It lacked the crucial element that made him hate his own household -- Karma and Meka's near-constant clucking at him and each other.
Merrimack noticed his looking, causing him to quirk an eyebrow. "It's different once you get past the door," he said, as if reading his mind. "I hardly leave this room, though, because it's much more dangerous on the other side."
Looking to the door, he spotted the bat-winged green cat still scoweling outside, as if seeking revenge for the feien. The little fairy stuck his tongue out at the cat-like creature before looking back to Talonfaust.
"So what did you find out?"
Tal watched the happenings in silence before straightening up a little "I have this book." he began.
"I'm not far into it, but already I know ways to protect yourself from hair-pulling, grabbing from behind, grabbing from the front, and using someone rushing you to your advantage. Am I right in assuming this Calico fought that way?"
He absently reached a hand to the back of his head, lightly touching the spot where it had been tender for so long from the terrible feien pulling his hair.
"Well, its best I know, anyway, in case I'll have to find out, right?" Merrimack said, his orange eyes glancing up at the white feien.
Tal nodded once "All right then." saying so, he carefully removed the golden circlet from his head, gently setting the red and black feather on top of it, and letting his raven hair hang loose.
"Then you're going to have to trust me a little. I've not tried these on anyone, its obvious you haven't, but whether you're the one doing the attack or recieving it, there's going to be contact involved." he shook out his arms again, wincing at a knot that had tried to form near his left elbow.
"But I won't hurt you if you don't hurt me." he added, wincing a little as the pain eased. "I'll walk you through them."
Merrimack frowned slightly, looking away for a moment. "F-fine..." he agreed, dropping his arms at his sides. "What do I need to do?"
Tal inwardly sighed, noting his reluctance. It was going to be hard getting him to be an enthusiastic sparring partner if he didn't even want to be touched...but....oh well. Walking through these slowly and gently a few times probably wouldn't hurt them either.
"Right." he began, stepping up to Merri. "I'm going to put my hair here." he announced, setting his hand on Merri's scalp, but not pulling or even grabbing onto his hair. "You take my hand, now. One palm across the fingers, one grabbing the wrist"
He waited to see if he would get compliance before continuing.
Merrimack flinched at the minor touch, but stayed where he was, reaching up his hands to do what he was told.
"One palm across the fingers," he echoed, laying his palm over Talon's fingers, "and one grabbing the wrist." With that, he took hold of the other's wrist.
"Like that?"
Tal nodded and kept his hand where it was. "Now...keep hold of it. Bend over a little, keep your head low and turn backward..."
The black-haired feien braced himself. The book had said this would put the attacker in a "compromising situation", but he had no idea if that translated into "mild discomfort" or "blind ******** pain".
Merrimack glanced up at him for a moment, as if checking to be sure it would be okay. Doing as told, the small feien bent over a little bit, kept his head low, and slowly tried to turn backwards, wary of hurting Talon.
Tal waited...waited....and then zing! winced as a sharp bolt of pain rang up his arm as it was bent at an awkward angle. Just as he was nearing his threshold of discomfort, Merri's turn was complete. He cringed a bit, trying not to show just how uncomfortable this really was.
"T-Then..." he paused and tried again. "Then press my hand back towards me. .....but not too hard this time." he added quickly.
His ears drooped a little bit as he frowned, gently pushing his back back toward Talon. "This is going to be difficult...I don't like the idea of hurting you," he commented, keeping an eye on his facial expressions to know when to stop.
Tal gave a whine and then hissed "All right stop....stop....!" With a quick motion, he pulled his arm out of Merri's grasp and backed off a couple of steps, shaking out his arm and wincing. Since the attack hadn't been fast or at full power, the discomfort was already starting to fade.
"Well..." he remarked once he had himself under control again. "I think its safe to say that one works...." He flexed his fingers slowly. "Of course, when you actually use it, its a lot faster and more violent than that....the book said you could break an arm that way if you do it hard enough." He looked to Merri again.
"Your turn?"
Merrimack bit his lip gently before reaching a hand up to lightly touch Talon's head. This part wouldn't be fun...
"B-be gentle, please..." he nearly pleaded, not even knowing how much he'd be able to take.
Tal quickly placed his hands in the appropriate hold, indicating his earlier practice. "Let me know when it hurts. I'll stop." he said in all seriousness.
Merri wasn't the one he wanted to incapacitate, he just wanted to ensure he knew how to do it correctly as he lowered his head like a charging bull and, putting one foot behind the other, turned backwards.
"Ah...ah!!"
Merrimack tried to bare it as his arm began to twist around, even if it wasn't as quick as it should have been. However, this is almost as bad as the pain he felt from getting his head jerked around by Calico, and already he was feeling bad pressure on his bones and muscles.
"S-stop...STOP!!" he cried, clenching his teeth in attempt to not scream. It was useless...he was frail, too fragile to be doing things like this. If Calico were to pull something like this, he'd break in an instant.
Tal instantly let go of Merri's arm as he'd promised and turned to face him again to see how bad off he was.
"I know you don't like it. I don't like it either. This is the only way it gets better, though. The idea of all of this is to know what to expect and use it on him before he can use it on you." he reasoned. "If it makes you feel better, the next one doesn't hurt. If anything, it should make you feel strong."
Merrimack bit his lip again, fighting back small tears as he grabbed at his arm over his elbow, the pain slowly easing away.
"It really won't hurt?" he asked, looking up at him. "Not at all?"
Tal shook his head "Not at all." Saying so, he moved behind Merri and wrapped his spindly arms around him in a bearhug, barely able to reach his chest...obviously this counterattack had been devised to use against attackers that were much larger than him...but....
"Now...bend your knees and drop down...at the same time, bring your elbows up. Knock my arms away."
Merrimack released his arm, going through the instructions in his head. Drop down...elbows up... That couldn't be too hard, right? He bent his knees, dropped down, and tried to knock Talon's arms away with his elbows.
Tal immediately had his already-unsteady grip jostled as Merri dropped and then his interlaced fingers came undone as the other feien's elbows came up. "All right, keep your elbows up, twist left, hit me in the left side with your left elbow, then do the same on the right. Two quick motions." He drew in a breath and held it just in case Merri didn't cushion the blows.
He blinked a few times, wondering exactly what that would do, but did as he was told. Twisting to the left, he smacked Talon with his elbow, and then quickly twisted to the right, doing the same. Fortunately for Talon, Merri didn't have a lot of strength, so the smacks were rather light.
Talon gave a grunt with each hit...had they been much harder, they would have knocked his wind out. "Right...this is the fun part." He'd left his arms on either of Merri's shoulders after the hold had been broken and leaned a little more heavily on Merri.
"Grab one of my arms, doesn't matter which....above the elbow if you can. Bring your hip back, and pull me forward" The book had said that this took very little force, honestly, since all it did was use the attacker's own weight against them. But, if done right, it looked much more dramatic and powerful than that.
Merrimack closed his eyes briefly for a moment before opening them again, a little hesitant to do so. He knew what would happen...and if done with too much force, Talon could be more injured than expected. Twisting his hip back, he only pulled on Talon's arm lightly.
Tal hadn't expected it to work...not with how muleish Merri was being about all of this, but once he started to pull, he felt his balance leaving him and, his free arm pinwheeling for balance, was carried over the smaller feien's shoulder and landed on his back on the ground in front of him his wings tangled behind him as he blinked bewilderedly at the ceiling.
".....I'll be damned." he said, laying there unhurt. "It DOES work."
"Given the weight you were putting on me, I don't see why it wouldn't," he commented, releasing the feien's arm. "Are you okay?"
"Think so..." Tal murmured, sitting up and propping himself back on his arms. Everything seemed in order....nothing was broken. "Needless to say, of course, you and I are a pathetic sight right now. I don't think there's a chapter in the book about how to want to attack someone..."
Merrimack rubbed the back of his neck a little sheepishly, looking off to the side. "I'm sure if I got angry, I may be able to...but ya know, there's always the fact that Tahki wouldn't be too happy if you got hurt," he explained, leaning back to actually sit down.
Talon got to his feet and arched his back. His tailbone zinged a bit from the force of the impact a moment ago, but he was otherwise unhurt. "I'm sure whatever you could do is no worse than hitting the wall and falling to the floor when I get tired enough. That, and I think you getting your a** handed to you again or worse will upset her a lot more than if I get a few bruises. She knows we're doing this."
"Hm? She does?" he piped up, raising a brow. "Hmm...still. It doesn't feel right to me."
Sighing lightly, Merrimack fought with a yawn before his wings drooped down lazily, shifting his head to crack his neck. Would any of this really work on the mighty Calico? Could he really get away with defending himself? True, it looked good right NOW, but were it him instead of Talon behind him, what would really happen? Crossing his arms over his chest, he thought for a moment. He had to try, right? Without trying, nothing would be proven...nothing would be done. But would he really have this nerve against the real thing...?
"C'mon..." Tal sighed, shaking out his wings a little "How do we get you mad, if that's the only way to light a fire under you? I can take it, I'm spry enough..." He puffed out his chest a little, looking not at all draconic....in fact, he looked more like a banty rooster.
"What did Calico say to you when he made you angry...? Minus the attacking. He had to have said something to get your hackles up."
Merrimack narrowed his eyes a little bit. "That's just it. He didn't say anything...he told me to come up so he could see me better, then he grabbed me and poked my eye. I told him it hurt...I called him a moron. Then he just went on about an apology, dragging my head about like it was some sort of pompom."
Drawing up his legs, he wrapped his arms around his knees and rested his chin down on them. "I'm not...angry. I'm scared out of my wits. I doubt I'll even have the courage to actually do anything to him were he to attack me..."
"What a b*****d..." Tal snorted, screwing his face up. "I would've given him an apology, all right....a knee in the stomach can be VERY apologetic..." He sighed, looking at Merri and thinking.
"All right, what's so scary about him? Let's break him down."
"He's bigger than me," was his first answer, and almost would have summed it all up. "He's really strong, he's just plain intimidating, he makes terrible threats..."
"I'm bigger than you, why don't I scare you?" Tal shrugged. "Or is he bigger than me too?" He had a rudimentary mental picture of Calico in his head which, each time he talked to Merri, fleshed out a bit more.
"No, I think he's shorter than you," he explained, thinking about that for a moment. "And you don't scare me because you're close to Tahki. And...I like white."
Of course, the colors that he liked made no sense to anyone else. They were merely associations to emotions that he felt, and he found that white, blue, and some red were very calming.
Shorter than him....all right, good, that meant he'd have a slight advantage when and if they ever met. Height, however, would only take him so far and he knew it.
"But take all of that away, and what is he underneath? He's just like you and me. All he's got going for him is the fact you and whoever else he's harrassed think he's a monster. And as long as you feed that, he'll play on it. Rip that rug out from under him, and what then...? What does he have when you take away the threats and the hair-pulling?"
The more he thought about it, the more Calico sounded to him like a shoddily-built stone wall. You couldn't knock over such a thing by beating on it, but find that one faulty rock and pull it out....
Merrimack closed his eyes, hugging his knees a little tighter. "I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me," he said quietly, clenching a hand into a fist.
Tal's brows lowered a bit "I don't go looking for blood either, but when someone gives you the choice of "hurt or be hurt", there's not much else you can do. What if he did what he did to you to Tahki?"
Merrimack thought about that for a moment, opening his eyes half way. What WOULD he do? Sit there and sulk? Go after Calico himself? ...Would he truely do anything? He could feel his heart sink as his world felt about ready to crumble, torn between wondering if he'd risk himself for anyone. It all seemed like a good idea...everything did. But it was just that: they were only ideas. A reality that couldn't exist in his world, souly for the fact that he never let it.
"I-...I don't know..." he murmered, burying his head in his knees. "I don't know what I'd do..."
"I'll tell you something." Tal muttered, combing his hair back with his fingers and then bending to retrieve his circlet and feathers, speaking as he repositioned them "If you'd asked me what I thought of people who put themselves on the line for others shortly after my summonday, I would have called them overdramatic idiots who just wanted to be remembered. Having met Tahki and asking me the same question now, I'd tell you that I'd do it without thinking if she needed it. Some things are too precious to think twice about."
"But then...nobody's asking either of us to do that. We're not trying to learn how to hurt people....we're not learning to be like him, Merri. We're just learning to protect ourselves and others from people like him."
"Too precious," he echoed quietly, lifting his head a little bit. Talon was right, though. There were things too precious to think twice about...but what use would he be if he got hurt as well?
"I want to be stronger one day...I want to grow up, and be able to protect the ones that I care about. However right now, it's impossible," Merrimack said, lowering his head again. "Right now, all I can do is this training...until I get stronger, I just hope I don't run into him again."
Tal's eyes softened a bit....with pity perhaps? He hesitated and then reached out, putting a hand lightly on Merri's shoulder.
"You said he was looking for you...I don't know how many of the shopgoers know where you live, but if you feel like he might be close to figuring out where you are, come stay with me awhile. I don't give a good god damn what Karma says. If SHE can bring in a new bloom without asking, *I* can bring in whomever I like without asking. Not like she'll make a scene about it anyway....she never mouths off in front of company."
He cleared his throat and dropped his hand "Hell, if nothing else, I'd make a good lookout. Not like I do any resting in the first place, right?"
Stay with him? Lookout? Merrimack blinked a few times, thinking about that. Well, it wouldn't be so bad...but with Ares leaving soon, that wouldn't be the best idea right now.
"Maybe...when mommy comes back from her trip with daddy, I'll have an actual answer for you," he decided. "I couldn't leave Tahki here alone..."
"I never said you had to." Tal shrugged, trying to look casual about it....though he already knew the hell he'd be in for if Karma caught Tahki at the house, whether Merri was there with them or not. To hell with however innocent and well-intentioned the motive might have been, she would assume the worst. It was her nature.
"But that's only if it comes to that. I just wanted you to know the offer stands."
Merrimack nodded a little sleepily, stretching his legs out a bit.
"I'll keep that in mind," he said, wondering what Neko would think about the thought of all three feien being gone.
"Guess I'll keep reading then..." Tal sighed, his confidence in what he'd learned earlier beginning to wane a little. It worked, but if neither of them had the drive to go at each other and try to perfect it, it was rather useless knowing it.
"Where IS Tahki anyway?" he inquired, changing the subject.
Merrimack's ears perked up a little bit as he checked around for a clock. It was rather late, wasn't it? She should have been home by now.
"Actually, I'm not sure...normally she'd be back by now," he frowned, standing up and stretching his back. "This worries me a little bit..."
Tal blinked twice. If Merri was worried "a little bit", Talon was immediately doing more than enough worrying for the both of them.
"Did she say where she was going?" he asked. "Or when to expect her?"
He shook his head, scratching his head as he thought.
"No, she didn't say where...she left in the afternoon after asking mommy something," he recalled, remembering that she also had a small piece of bread with her when she left.
"Damn..." Tal cursed, gnawing at his lip. What if, while he and Merri sat there yacking at each other, the very thing he'd presented in a hypothetical situation -- that Calico might hurt Tahki -- was happening as they spoke? He cast a worried look at the window, debating winging to the shop to see if she had gone there...
"I think she might have left to see if she could find Tempest," Merrimack admitting, trying to remember the conversation. "But, she lives in the woods...You don't think she might have gotten lost, do you?"
Tal groaned and slapped his forehead. The woods...? He didn't know his a** from his elbow in the woods. "Maybe...." he sighed, gritting his teeth. "...how often does she go, if ever?"
"Hmmm...she's been through there maybe once or twice," he explained, stepping over to the edge of the desk. "But, if its dark now..."
Letting out a sigh, Tal took a few steps toward the window, listening to the crickets chirr outside. ".....should we go look for her?" His hands twitched at his sides, clearly ready to do as such at the drop of a hat.
"What if we get lost as well...?" Merrimack asked, glancing over towards the door for a moment. "And how would we be able to see?"
"I---we---I don't know...!" Tal sighed in frustration, making a fist and thumping it once against the glass. There had to be -some- way....
Merrimack pursed his lips, closing his eyes as he thought. No, they couldn't leave her out there if she was lost. Neko had warned them about the different kinds of creatures that lived in that forest, and if one of them had gotten to her...he would never forgive himself.
"We could ask Neko for help," he suggested. "I'm sure she'd be worried, too."
Tal flinched, obviously not liking the idea of having to go fetch a near-stranger, but it was either that or stand by and hope that nothing bad was happening. Talon had never been good at taking things as they came anyway....
"All right. Let's get her, then..."
Merrimack nodded and took wing, flying towards the door. "Follow me," he said, looking over his shoulder.
He kept an eye on the celestrus still camped outside of the door, but luckily, she was asleep. Turning the corner, Merrimack quickly flew down the hall, then down the stairs, and began to look for his bondmate.
"Neko?" he called out, not seeing him for a moment. "Neko...?"
"I didn't do it!" Neko cried, bolting up into a sit from where he was laying on the couch. Ares was curled up on the endtable next to him, but didn't wake. "Who's calling...?"
"Neko, we need your help."
RP that occured August 1/2, 2004: (Part 2)
Tal fluttered wordlessly beside Merri as he woke Neko and wondered if he should interject....his impulses, however, decided for him as he spoke. "Tahki isn't back yet. Merrimack says she left quite some time ago." he tried to keep an even tone in his voice so as not to betray his worry, though he couldn't keep away a slight waver.
"Mmm? She's not back yet?" he yawned, his ears flattening a little bit. "Where'd she head off to, anyway?"
"The woods," Merrimack informed him. "I think she went to find Tempest."
Neko raised a brow as his tail flicked a little bit, trying to take in this new information. "The woods? To find Tempest......? ..............................................Oh, ******** standing up and promptly falling over from standing too fast, the demon hanyou crawled over to a small desk that rested in the corner of the room. Opening a drawer, he began to rummage through the items inside, not even noticing his notion flying down the stairs and right into his ear. Flashlight...flashlight...ah! Picking up the blue covered light source, he turned it on to make sure it worked.
"How long ago did she leave?" he asked, standing up a little slower this time.
Talon, not liking Neko's reaction to the news at all felt the bottom drop out of his stomach as he hovered after Neko, watching him fumble out the flashlight and stand before looking to Merri. He didn't know what time Tahki had left, only that she hadn't been there when he arrived.
"She left some time in the afternoon," he explained, flitting closer to the other two. "She's all right, right?"
Neko decided it was better to give them the benefit of the doubt. "I'm sure she's fine," he assured them, stepping over to the door. "Once we get closer, I'll do a bit of a scan to see where she actually is."
Merrimack frowned slightly, immediately floating outside as Neko opened the door. "If you're lying to me..."
"I wouldn't lie about something like that," he said, trying to smile. "Seriously, I think she's fine...Tahki's smart enough to be able to take c--...she's smart enough to know when enough is enough. She could have found shelter for all we know."
Waiting for Talon to follow, assuming he also wanted to go, Neko closed the door behind them. "You two try to stay close, though. This light only reaches so far, and I don't need three missing feien, especially since one of them isn't mine."
Tal nodded, in this case forgetting that he might have had something snide to say about "belonging" to someone. For now he was moreso concerned with one thing -- finding Tahki and making sure she was all right.
"How far from here would she have gone...? Do you even know?" he asked, flitting a short distance to the right where a small cluster of lightning bugs were playing further out on the lawn. After a moment, he caught one between his hands and held it cupped there firmly so it couldn't buzz its wings, but illuminated itself with a sharp glow.
"Tahki's pretty quick...and given that she knows were the forest is, she's probably pretty deep inside. Come here for a moment...I'm going to teleport us there to save time," he said waving a hand at Talon to come closer.
Merrimack scrunched up his nose a little bit. "You know I don't like that very much..." he commented, landing on Neko's shoulder. He crossed his arms over his chest as his wings drooped low.
"Well, tough. There's not much of a choice right now..." he sighed, his tail flicking with annoyance.
Tal hesitated, a little unnerved. Teleporting? What if they ended up all merged together or inside-out or--- He forced himself off of that train of thought and bit his tongue as he alighted on Neko's other shoulder without argument.
Neko held the flashlight upside between his hands as he joined them, his thumbs and index fingers pressed together as they pointed toward the heavens. Closing his gold eyes, he mouthed a couple of words, and the scenery seemed to change as he concentrated. There wasn't anything special about teleporting...it was too simple when it came to the same plane. Opening his eyes, he glanced around for a moment before shining the flashlight into the woods, being at the enterance.
It was a little cold, rather dark and eerie. It was no wonder Merrimack didn't like coming here. "Remember, stay close," he reminded them, stepping off to start searching.
Merrimack flitted off of Neko's shoulder, cupping his hands over his mouth as he drew in a deep breath.
"And you probably shouldn't make too much noise," he added. "You don't want to draw any creatures' attention."
Exhaling slowly, Merrimack bit his lip softly, running his hands through his hair. How did they expect to find her like this? It was dark, cold...it all felt so wrong. Stubbornly, the little feien glided close to the ground, figuring Talon may try to look higher up.
Tal, as Merri had suspected, was already fluttering upward, stopping when he was nearly twenty feet in the air, still able to see the glow of Neko's flashlight below. The firefly he held struggled in his grip, but he refused to let go of it. The little glow didn't offer much illumination but it was enough to, at least, see about a foot in front of himself.
However...there wasn't much to see. The forest was completely black and the canopy of trees offered nothing to help him see ahead of himself. If anything, Merri had the right idea searching the ground.
"Hey Merri? Be my eyes for a moment?" Neko asked, closing his eyes before he even got an answer. Concentrating hard, he tried to see if he could pick up the faint amount of magic that would be Tahki from somewhere.
Merrimack grumbled as he started to call out the things that were in front of the demon hanyou.
"Rock. Twig. Big rock. ...Bigger rock. Small branch. Patch of grass. Rock. ....Rock. ........Rock. ...Um, tree."
"What?" he called out a little too late, and ended up walking right into the tree.
SMACK!
"Ow..." Neko shook his head several times, trying to regain his composure. "She's somewhere over that way, though," he said, blinking a few times as he pointed to the left. "Her magic sense is a bit fainter than usual, though, so she might be asleep..."
Tal tried to remain up high as he followed the glow of Neko's flashlight, but was immediately torn at by pine needles and twigs which made him recoil with a cry and dart downward to be closer to Neko and Merri once more, tugging pollen husks from his hair.
"What's going on?" he asked Merri, not having heard Neko's statement a moment ago.
"She said she's somewhere on the left," Merrimack told him, curious if Neko was being dillusional from hitting the tree. "Neko ran into the tree, though, so I'm wondering if...we should go both ways..."
Tal turned to the left, keening his ears to the wind. He heard nothing except the faint rustle of breeze against the tree trunks and sighing through the pine boughs. Looking to the right, he saw basically the same...the entire woods looked the same, in fact. It would be easy to get lost here. "I'll go that way." he said, gesturing to the left without hesitation. "If worse comes to worst, the sun should be up soon..."
"Already? Eh...okay, I'll go to the rig--..Talon, what's that you have in your hands?" he asked questioningly, noticing the glow.
"This...? Firefly." he said, parting his fingers just slightly to show the irate-looking insect still held between his palms. "Why?"
"Tahki loves firelies...so if she's awake, you just may have the best luck in finding her," he explained before turning toward the right. "I say give about 15 minutes tops to look, then meet back here. If we don't find her, we'll wait for it to get a little lighter, and all three of us can look."
"Fifteen minutes then." Tal nodded and then, without further hesitation, took off to the left, his eyes scanning the surrounding dark shrubbery and low-hanging tree branches. "Tahki?" he called in his normal speaking tone, pausing to examine a thicket before zipping to a tangle of scrub oak nearby. "Tahki...??"
Merrimack flitted off in the other direction, quietly calling out Tahki's name.
To the left, as Neko said, Tahki was sprawled out on a large branch, higher up in the trees. She winced slightly as she opened her eyes, her ears twitching a little bit as she could hear her name being called. ...Someone was calling for her? She felt dizzy, and sore all over, especially her left arm. Why did it hurt so much? The last thing she could remember was...
...was trying to get away from a rather large bird. She must have slammed into the tree in order for her to hurt this bad.
Noting a large pile of leaves at the base of a nearby tree, Tal moved there next, shifting the firefly to one hand as the insect buzzed and protested angrily while with his free hand, he grabbed the edges of the leaves, flinging them aside like large frisbees. He didn't put it past her to have fallen asleep in a leafpile while exploring, after all. "Tahki...??" He as he fumbled aside the last leaf, revealing slightly damp earth beneath, he felt his heart sink, sighed, and turned to check elsewhere. "Tahki, where are you??"
The woods were calm, but he didn't like the way they felt....a little too secluded, a little too cold...maybe it was that the woods' residents likely knew their way around them much better than any visitor and anywhere one thought they might be safe, they weren't. True, Tahki could be a little addlebrained from what he'd seen, but he didn't think even SHE would decide this place would be a good place to nap.
Tahki tried to sit up, finding it very hard to do so, and failing miserably. Dragging herself to the edge of the branch, she did her best to look over, her wings fallen limp on her from being exhausted. With the brightening light emmitting from the sky, she could hardly make out the white figure she noticed, espeically with her fuzzy vision. But the voice...it sounded so familiar.
"I'm...up here..." she managed to get out, but it was a mere whisper as her voice cracked and squeaked. "Right.....here..."
Tal's ear twitched....he could almost have sworn he heard something...but it hadn't been loud enough to hear what it was or where it had come from. He froze for a moment, the only sound being the whisper of his wings as they beat the air and the occasional buzz from the firefly in his hands.
Throwing caution to the wind, not caring about Neko's warning, he upped the volume of his voice a bit, growing bolder as the darkness began to wane into dawn. "Tahki???" He paused, scanning the immediate area around him.
Gods, where WAS she?? Maybe Merri had found her in the direction he'd gone...? He bit his lip, wondering if he should go and see.
That voice...
"Talon..." she tried to call out, her voice still hoarse. He couldn't hear her, could he? "Talon...ov.....here...."
There had to be something she could do. Tahki felt too weak at the moment to fly, much less move, and calling out was doing her no good. Glancing around the branch, she looked for something she could maybe throw to catch his attention. A leaf, a tiny twig...ANYTHING! It took her a moment to remember she'd brought a little bit of bread with her. Where was it...? Turning a little bit, she noticed something resting near her foot. Was that it? No matter...it would do. Swinging her left leg a little bit, she attempted to push the object off of the branch, in hopes it might be seen. It took about 3 tries to get it to the edge, and a forth for it to tumble over, the bread piece falling toward the ground.
Talon had just gotten it into his head to go look for Merri when something pelted softly to the ground nearby. He whipped around in mid-air so hard that he nearly fishtailed off balance, his eyes immediately picking out the white bit of something sitting amid the earthy browns and greens of the forest floor and zipped toward it.
He picked it up between his hands examining it, bringing it close to his face and smelling it hesitantly. Bread. But where--
Merri's words from earlier resounded in his mind....that she'd gone to visit Tempest and bring her some bread. Feeling a surge of hope, he turned his head upward, scanning the upper branches for only a moment before launching himself into the air to inspect them up close instead.
"Tahki??" he called urgently, zipping from one bough to the next.
One more time, Tahki tried to get into a sit, her right arm grasping desperately into the bark of the tree. Getting herself up to her knees at last, she twisted her body carefully around, resting her rump on the branch as she eased back to lean against the trunk. While she could move for the moment, her left arm was still in a lot of pain, and was probably the only thing she COULDN'T move.
Taking a few deep breaths, she hoped that would be enough to be noticed, trying once more to call out. "Talon...!"
That time Tal heard her distinctly, not far from his right and immediately careened in that direction, snagging his hair in a tangle of leaves, losing his circlet and feathers in the process and not caring. The lightning bug, no longer needed, was simply being held prisoner because he'd forgotten about it in his left hand.
After a moment of searching, he saw her at last, in a reclined kneel and partially hidden by leaves.
"Tahki...!!!" he cried, noticing even as he approached that she was hurt and putting on the brakes to stop the near-panicked pounce he'd been about to give her as he, instead, halted in front of her and landed at her side.
"Whuh--" his eyes crawled over her battered body. "What happened to you...??"
Tahki could only look up at him for a moment, trying to pull herself together. She'd worried him...and for that, she felt bad. How did he even know to look for her? How did he know she was here...? Managing a faint smile, she closed her eyes.
"I...ran into the tree," she replied quietly, feeling as if she'd cry at any moment. He was here...he rescued her. What would have happened had he NOT shown up?
"Tahki!! Talon!!" came a familiar cry from below, quickly followed by a much louder and clearer voice.
"Talon! Where are you?? Tahki??" Neko cried, taking slow steps to make sure he didn't miss them.
For a moment, Talon simply couldn't speak....his throat felt like it had constricted to the size of a pinhole. Seeing her this way -- hurt and upset -- made him feel terrible. Gods, what if he hadn't found her? What if she hadn't had that crumb of bread to kick down from the branch? He---he'd almost LEFT her there! He swallowed hard, blinking slowly, tears spilling from either of his eyes.
At the sound of the voices below, he drew in a shaky breath. She needed help and him sitting there crying over it wasn't going to bring any. Tal reached out, gingerly putting a hand on the side of her face.
"Its all right now...." he whispered, trying to sound reassuring. "You'll be f--fine." Squinting his eyes shut, squeezing back the rest of the tears, he drew in his breath and called down to Merri and Neko.
"Up here!! She's up here!!"
Neko's ears flicked slightly as she heard Talon's voice, and looked up. "Sounds like he found her," he said, smiling slightly. "I'll meet you up there, okay Merri?"
Without waiting for that last part, Merrimack shot up into the higher parts of the trees, nearly missing the two.
"There you are!" he cried with relief, flitting over to the branch and landing infront of them. "We were so wor...ried....."
His voice trailed off as he noticed how bad Tahki looked, taking note that her arm looked a little different. He found himself only able to stare down at them, his hands resting weakly at his sides.
Glancing up at the tree, Neko's wings appeared on his back in a flurry of feathers, immediately flapping them a little bit to take flight. Upon reaching them, he reached a hand on the branch to keep himself steady.
"Everyone all right?" he asked, curious of their expressions.
Tal swallowed again, his throat threatening to seize up once more. "She---no. She's not." he said weakly, hoping Neko wouldn't ask him to move because he didn't think he could.
The hand remained on Tahki's cheek, stroking her skin absently and gently. He felt on the verge of something -- a breakdown, perhaps? He didn't know...but whatever it was, it could come back later. This required their full attention.
"I--her arm. I don't think we should move her..." he managed to half-say, half-squeak.
Tahki opened her eyes partially, continuing to smile as she looked over at Talon before looking to Merrimack, and then Neko. Lifting her good hand slowly, she carefully entwined her fingers in his.
Neko did his best to glance at Tahki's arm, very gently slipping a finger underneath to lift it a little bit. While she winced, she wasn't complaining, so that was a genrally good sign.
"Can you wiggle your fingers without it hurting?" he asked her, watching the arm.
Tahki wiggled her fingers a little bit before nodding.
"How about your wrist? Can you move your hand?"
Once again, she complied, circling her wrist before letting it hang loose again.
"Does it hurt when I move your arm like this?" Neko asked, very gently poking her forearm to bend her elbow straight.
"EE! Yes..." she nodded, wincing.
"Hmmm...I don't think it's anything too bad. I don't think that it's broken, but it could be at least a sprain," he decided, nodding his head a little bit.
"How did you run into the tree...?" Tal questioned, stating it as gently as possible, not wanting her to feel like he was condescending. All he wanted at the moment was to make her better somehow....it hurt seeing her this way. Knowing he should have been protecting her and keeping things like this from happening to her.
What kind of protector was he?
Feeling sick and saddened, he set his jaw, trying to stay strong until he could be by himself again.
"Wh--what should we do?" he asked, clearing his throat forcefully.
"Well, we could make a little splint and let it heal on its own," he started, "or we could....find..........Merri?"
Neko blinked a few times as he watched the little feien step closer to the injured, noticing a bit of determination in his eyes.
Merrimack stared down at the arm, contemplating something as he lifted his hands, taking into thought a spell that he had. He was able to mend things such as string and wood, right? What if he could...mend a bone? Very carefully, the memory feien straightened out Tahki's arm how it should be, then gently placed his hands near her elbow. It was worth a shot, right? There wasn't any harm in trying. Merrimack closed his eyes, and began to concentrate, hoping that it might work.
Talon watched Merri in silence, sensing what he was going to do and inwardly kicking himself. If he'd tried a bit harder to figure his magic out, maybe -he- would have been able to help instead of sitting there uselessly. It occurred to him that he'd concentrated so much on physical defense and combat, he hadn't even attempted to get in tune with the talents given to him to use to his advantage.
Next time, he promised himself. This had taken him offguard, what had happened to Tahki, but it wouldn't happen again.
For the moment, he remained silent and simply watched, feeling his shoulder brush the downy softness of one of Tahki's wings as he knelt beside her, waiting to see if Merri's attempt to call on the magic would work.
Tahki blinked a few times, feeling a slight tingling in her arm where Merrimack's hands were, though something still didn't feel right. The pain was easing, almost depleteing itself away, but it was something inside that still felt odd. Smiling a little bit, she nodded as he removed his hands.
"It doesn't hurt anymore," she assured him. "But, I think I shouldn't move it for a while."
"And you won't. When we get home, I'll make a splint for you, okay?" Neko told her, carefully setting her arm back down.
She nodded, then looked to Talon. "Thank you, Talon, for finding me," she said softly, leaning over to plant a gentle kiss on his cheek.
Talon accepted the kiss, though he looked deeply troubled. "You're welcome." he murmured. He should have done more than just FIND her...what if Merri and Neko hadn't gone with him?? He was suddenly furious with himself, but tempered it back.
"Can you fly, do you think..." he asked, trying to steer the subject. He guessed she'd probably ride on Neko's shoulder as they went back, but it was something to ask, regardless...
Tahki shook her head, still feeling tired and weak.
"I'm too drained...I used a spell too many times," she explained, closing her eyes again. "I...I can tell you later."
"Talon, would you like me to take you home?" he piped up, tail flicking a little bit. Carefully, Neko picked up Tahki, intending to take her home before anything else happened.
Tal looked up at Neko and then shook his head in the negative. "I--I can find my way." he said, forcing an edge of confidance into his voice that he didn't feel. "She needs her family right now...." He could already feel tears prickling in the corners of his eyes.
God willing, nobody would be awake when he came in this morning.
"Are you sure?" he tried again. "I'd hate to hear your bondmate get upset with you because of this."
Merrimack flitted over to Neko's shoulder, looking to Talon as he settled down into a sit.
"I'm sure." he said flatly. He had no intention of going immediately home anyway...at least not inside. "She's probably not even awake yet..." he tried to pass the remark off as his normal sarcastic tone and thought he'd done a half-decent job of it.
"Shall I teleport you back to our house, then? Or will you go back on your own?" Neko asked, fighting a yawn.
"I'll go on my own." the raven-haired feien said, already turning to leave. "Just---make sure she's all right." His hands had already started to shake and he crossed his arms over his chest to hide them as he spread his wings, lighting off of the tree branch and swooping up high out of the tree canopy and into the brightening morning sky to check his location and get his bearings before heading back in the direction of civilization.
Neko watched him go, a little worried if he was really okay or not. Sighing lightly, he looked over to Merrimack for a moment before down at Tahki, who was sleeping in his hand.
"Let's go home..." he said quietly as he closed his eyes, holding up his free hand in a similar fashion as he had earlier. Mouthing a few words, they disappeared in a flurry of feathers, heading back home.
Neko took in a deep breath as he finally reached the ruins hidden in the forest, his tail flicking slightly as he looked around with curiosity. Tahki had insisted that she visit Tempest, it having been nearly a month or so since she'd seen her friend. Of course, Neko kept putting it off, especially after the transformation. Although, after what happened last night, the demon hanyou felt that he owed his feien this much.
Glancing over to his shoulder where Tahki was perched, he spoke quietly. "Are you sure you're up for this today? We could always come back tomorrow."
Tahki shook her head, her feathers ruffling a little bit.
"I wanna see her today! You've put it off for too long," she complained, her yellow eyes looking up at her bondmate. "Besides, you said you wanted to visit her bond! I heard you telling Domonic that he might have a book to help you."
Absently, the cold feien began to play with the bandage that was around her arm, a makeshift sling holding it up.
"Stop playing with that," he sighed, starting to walk again. "That thing is really hard for me to tie on."
Stepping closer to a rather odd building, this was where he'd believed Blayde to be living. At least, it kind of looked like someone was living there, as it was in much better shape than the rest of the surroundings were. Halting infront of the door, he lifted a gloved hand, and gave a couple of hard knocks. This would...certainly be an interesting visit.
Blayde thought for a moment that he had heard something that simply sounded like knocking, not a real knock on his door - Kara had put on her sunglasses and jacket and said that she'd be out for a while, and who else comes up through mountain forest to see some guy living in some ruins?
Still, he should probably get it before Tempe--
A little yellow form shot past him like it had been fired out of a rifle, blazing right through a small gap in an ornimental window a few feet above the door itself. She stopped for a moment too look at who was there...and then zipped around Tahki in little circles, overjoyed.
"Tahki! Taaaahkiiiii!! Where ya been??"
"Tempest~!!!" Tahki giggled, standing up on Neko's shoulder, and nearly falling off from trying to follow Tempest. Flapping her wings a little bit, she floating in the air, smiling happily. "I've been home! Where have YOU been?? You haven't been to the shop in AGES!"
Neko's eyes began to twitch a little bit as he moved his head to the side, trying not to get smacked by the two.
"Would you mind maybe moving away from my head a little bit?" he asked, trying to smile. "I don't need a ringing in my ears..."
"Mmph!" Latching onto Tempest, she pulled her friend with her closer to the building. At least, with one arm. "I missed you so much, Tempest! I thought something might of h--......Ooooh, you bigger, too!!"
Tempest giggled and hugged Tahki, smiling from ear to ear. "I've been busy....and I did grow! Being big's fun, and I can give that mouse a run for his money now." She giggled again, just as the door opened to reveal a rather sleepy, disheveled Blayde.
He grinned wryly at the two feien - he knew who THEY were. But who was--........
His eyes glowed softly as he squinted at her with mage-sight.
"I'd know energy that white anywhere outside a church. Neko?"
Blayde paused, and lowered his sunglasses to get a better look at her. "What in the WORLD happened to you?"
"Lookie lookie, I grew too!" she giggled, hugging Tempest back. "And what mouse? Maybe I can catch 'im! Because I can fly really really fast, you know. I can beat even Merri!"
"The ******** I know," he started, but then smacked himself in the face, sliding his hand over his eyes. Okay, calm...calm down.
"Sorry. I don't know what happened...I was out with Domonic, I went to sleep...I wake up and the next thing I know my breasts grew smaller and moved elsewhere."
Neko sighed, his ears twitching a little bit. This was so awkward, to be gone for so long, and then suddenly see one of his best friends like THIS. Though amazingly, Blayde hadn't looked too surprised.
"You have a lot of magic books, right? Do you happen to know if any of them have like...potions or anything? If I can't find a way to turn back, I want to at least find out how they did it...well, I wanna know WHO, as well, but hey."
"Oh! Where are my manners....come on in, both of you, if Tempest and Tahki can let go of eachother long enough to get through the door."
Blayde grinned at the two of them. This was the happiest he'd seen Tempest in a long time - and Tempest was generally pretty happy.
"I have books upon volumes upon shelves of stuff on all kinds of subjects...you're welcome to browse through and borrow anything you like. They're arranged roughly by subject....transformation, I think, is somewhere over by the shifting mirror. You can't miss it. We can all go into the library....nice place to sit and chat, anyway."
Blayde shot another glance at Neko, and grinned again. "I'm horribly amused, y'know. I'd probably be a little horrified, but hey, I share a room with a 200-year-dead ex-demon shapeshifter, so I guess I'm a little desensitized, mm?"
Tempest was, as usual, ignoring everything Blayde said - except where he was going. She grabbed Tahki by the hand and almost pulled her inside. "C'mon! I'll show you where they keep the cool stuff. We have a great place, and lots of food!"
Blayde winced. I did remember to put the sugar away....right....?
"At least your reason is better than Domonic's. He's used to it merely because people in his home town did this sort of thing as a normal routine," he said, his eyes twitching a little bit. "Thank the Gods that he's a water mage..."
"Eee! Cool stuff? What kind of cool stuff? What do you do here, Tempest? Do you just chase that mouse all day? What are we going to do? I have to be careful of my arm, though. Oh oh oh! I wanna show you a neat trick once we get to where you're taking me!"
Tahki's words were just rolling naturally off of her tongue, probably more excited than she'd been since Talon had kissed her cheek. Thinking of whom, she had a lot to talk about when it came to him. However, for now, she just wanted to know about everything Tempest had been up to.
Neko stepped in through the door, his tail curling up a little bit. "If she gets to be too much, I taught Tahki Simon Says. She's surprisingly very good at it...but its funny watching her squirm because of her attention span."
Tempest laughed. "I'll be careful of your arm, I promise. I'm taking you...here! To the room...of shiny~!"
She had led Tahki into a room where Blayde kept most of the non-dangerous baubles and things they found in the ruins....little crystal balls, weird twisted shapes of glass, and the like were scattered across shelves and tables in a bedroom-sized area, all of them glittering or shimmering in the light streaming in from an overhead window.
"I don't know how well I'd deal with changing gender as 'nomral routine'," Blayde laughed, and invited Neko to sit down on one of the comfy couches he had set up in the 'library'...a towering room packed with bookshelves that stretched almost out of sight, each shelf crammed with old-looking books of unknown origin, some of them in languages no one spoke anymore.
"So...how've you been?"
Tahki blinked a few times upon entering the room, looking rather amazed at how everything seemed to just shimmer in this room. Oh...so pretty! So glittery, so sparkly and oh so...
"SHINEY!" she said, bursting into giggles. "Everything is so shiney!! It's like some sort of hea~ven!! Oooo, I think Talon would like this, too! He seems to like shiney thi--oops. Um...oooo! Is that a crystal ball?"
Immediately becoming distracted again, the cold feien fluttered over to a large, ball-shaped glass, glancing inside. This was like from those fairytales! And movies! With the gypsies, and the fortune tellers, and and and....so pretty!
"Does it work? Can you see things in here?" she asked curiously, wondering if it was true that normal humans could use such magic.
Neko's tail flicked slightly before sitting down on the coach offered, slouching down much like teenage boys did when they were trying to think of things to do or watching TV. This, however, was just more comfortable to him...that, and he could rest his head against the back of the couch without having to lean his head back.
"I...guess I've been all right. Things could be better, really, but everything is okay for now," he sighed, running a gloved hand through his red hair. He glared at his bangs for a moment, watching as they fell back over his right eye. "And you? Aside from spending time cleaning this place up...and I assume that 200-year-dead shapeshifter would be Kara, as I can't see you sharing a room with anyone but her."
Neko's logic tended to work in odd ways, it seems, not even knowing much about the woman. However, given information he could remember from more than 10 years ago, he assumed something had to of happened to bring her back to life.
Blayde laughed and turned a little red, but didn't let it creep into his voice. "Yep, that's Kara....I wish you could meet her, but I dunno when she'll be back...she keeps weird hours, hey?" He laughed again.
Tempest giggled and gloried in her friend's fascination with the baubles.
"Yep, it works...you can see....the future!"
The little yellow feien popped up behind the crystal ball, making an image of a giant distorted Tempest-head appear on Tahki's side of the almost-clear sphere. She made a face at Tahki through the ball.
Tahki blinked a few times before giggling, scrunching up her face to make a face back at Tempest.
"Dih ih hun!" she said, muffled by her good hand squishing her face.
So could they really see the future? What would that be like? Was it a nice future...? A bad one?
"Hey Tempest, can you show me how it works?" she asked curiously, resting her hand gently on the crystal ball.
Neko smiled a bit before shaking his head, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Well, it's probably a good thing that I don't meet her yet. I'd...rather be normal when that happens," he said softly, tail flicking lazily. "Though one day, I would be happy to."
Blayde laughed. "Somehow, I doubt Kara would care what you looked like...she doesn't take anything at face value. Suspicious girl, Kara.
"But I guess I can't blame you, hey? If I were suddenly a girl, I'd feel a little weird about meeting people too!"
Tempest sighed, flitting up to sit cross-legged on the top of the crystal ball. "I wanna use it, but I can't. Blayde says that this kinda ball needs a seer, or someone -" - she scrunched up her face and did her best imitation of Blayde - "-'with a connection to the timeline or the past or future.' Whatever that means."
Neko opened his mouth to say something, but immediately closed it again, his ears drawing back. No, it would be way too weird if Blayde actually jumped on that offer, and he didn't really want to put up with the results. Especially with not knowing the reversal spell.
"Eh, I'll live," he sighed. "At least people I didn't really know don't recognize me. I'll never live this down, I swear...if Domonic doesn't let it go, then I'm sure my other friends won't either."
The demon hanyou winced at the thought of that, being laughed at for the whole incident. That wouldn't exactly be pleasing, since he was supposed to be "such an all knowing mage", as some of them taunted him with. <******** assholes... he thought to himself. That's the last time I say anything in those God-forsaken bars.
"If I can't find anything myself, my last resort will be going to Dom's home town. Something's been irking me, though...there's something not right about all of this, and I can't explain what exactly it is. It's like this happened on purpose for one reason or another."
Tahki blinked a few times, looking up at Tempest. A seer? Someone with a connection to the past or future...? Oh! That sounded familiar!
"I wonder if Ares could do something like that," she thought aloud, recalling Ares' ability. "She looks at things pasts all the time!"
Of course, those were only objects, as well. She'd never seen Ares look into a person's past, and wondered if it was even possible. Flitting up a little bit, she tried to sit next to Tempest on the crystal ball, looking around the room again.
"Where did all of these come from, Tempest? I've never seen so many shinies before! It's all so pretty, and gittery, and..." She stopped then, thinking about Talon again. Of course, that only made her think about what happened yesterday.
"I tried to come by yesterday. I tried to come by before, too, but no one was here. I almost thought you might not have been here today!"
Tempest giggled. "Sorry about that. We've been reaaaaaally busy, and I go with Blayde when he goes into town for stuff, or when he explores. Kara kinda ducks in and out..."
Tempest blinked, and smiled. "Oh! You haven't met Kara! You should, she's nice....but she's kinda quiet."
"Anyway, some of this stuff was already in the room...but most of it, Blayde and I found when we were checking out the rest of the ruins! This place has some neat secrets."
Blayde nodded. "Well, you're welcome to check around this library for anything that might help you, and you're welcome to borrow any books that might have a lead. They're vaguely by subject....so...uh."
He twisted his head around, looking across all the books that lined the walls. "Transformation would be..........there, I think." He pointed in the appropriate direction. "'fraid there are only a score or so of books on it, though. More general potions or antidote stuff is two bookcases down, on the bottom."
"Secrets?" Tahki piped up curiously, looking to the yellow feien. "What kinda secrets?"
There went her curiosity. While she was interested in learning more about this Kara person, her mind always learned toward mysterious things.
Neko nodded before lazily standing up, his tail flicking curiously behind him.
"Thanks," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Hopefully I might be able to find something here..."
Venturing to the very large bookcase where Blayde had pointed, the demon hanyou began to skim through a few of the covers, slipping out an older one in particular. Carefully opening the book, he proceeded to look through the pages, gentle so that the time-worn object wouldn't get ripped or torn.
Blayde grinned from where he sat - he didn't know much about transformation. Maybe Kara did...too bad she was out.
He couldn't resist joking, though. "Careful - most of those books are older than I am!"
Tempest grinned. "Most of 'em we've moved out of the other ruins........'cause most of the other ruins around here are falling apart, so it's not safe. But sometimes Blayde will find a new part of 'em that aren't too bad, and I can poke around in all the little places and find things like these!" Tempest underlined that point by gesturing grandly at their surroundings.
"I wish I could take you on a tour of some of the places....but we haven't found anything new in a while, and without these shiny things, it's just dusty old stone hallways and rooms."
Tempest didn't bring up the...things...that lived in some of the older parts of the ruins. No need to worry her guest!
Neko's ears flicked a little bit, perking up as his friend spoke.
"Once they get older than me, that's when I'll start laughing," he called, smirking over his shoulder.
Awwww, no fun! However, an idea occurred to her.
"Hmmm...what if we found something new?" she asked curiously. "We could...oh! We could go on an adventure!"
...Wasn't it an adventure that caused her to hurt her arm? Tahki didn't exactly think of that, since this sounded more fun.
Tempest shook her head sadly. "I wanna! But Blayde and Kara sealed up all the entrances...I spent a whole week trying to find ways in!"
Blayde laughed. "Touché. Can I get you something to drink, 'Grandma'?"
"Awww!" More no fun! What a shame, what a bummer, what a...well, you know.
"Hmmmm...hmmmmmmmmmmmm.... What coud we do, Tempest?" she puzzled, scratching at her arm. There had to be something...
Neko almost hissed at him, but caught himself, giving the fox boy an evil glare. However, that only lasted for a quick moment.
"Oh no, 'sonny', you're too young to drink the stuff I'd want," he said, looking through a few more pages before closing the book and carefully putting it away. "Maybe in a couple more years..."
Tapping through the books again, he grabbed a rather thick one, only slightly worn from more than being likely read many times. Opening that book, he began to skim through the pages.
Blayde flicked an ear and grinned at her from over the couch. "Hmmm....maybe you're right, Oh Venerable Elder. Just ginger ale for this fox."
Winking, Blayde pulled a bottle of ginger ale out of a cleverly-hidden fridge built into the table. He took a drink.
"Mmm....refreshing. Find anything useful, yet?"
Tempest was a little taken aback. She had lived her here whole life. Exploring was really really fun (with lots of cool treasures!), but without that, she wasn't used to thinking like a guest, and deciding what would be fun. If only--...!
"We could try to find the mousie!"
"Mousie?" Tahki piped up, curious for a moment. Oh! The mouse Tempest had been trying so hard to get? Hmm...with the two of them, they could surely catch it...couldn't they?
"Yeah! Maybe I could help you catch it!" she giggled, ruffling her feathers a little bit. "But meeting it would be nice!"
Neko sighed softly after a moment, closing that book as well.
"No, not yet," he said quietly, a little troubled. "Some of these I've tried once before...mostly potions and a couple of spells. They either don't work, or my own self-defences are acting against me."
Placing the book carefully back onto the shelf, he skimmed the titles again, one more time. It was strange... There was one spell that almost worked, but it had immediately reversed itself before any progress could actually be witnessed. As far as he knew, there were no wards on him, and Domonic had to... "kindly" confirmed that.
"This may sound like an odd question, but do you happen to have a book on demons?" he finally asked, flicking his tail a little bit. "Perhaps I'm going about this whole thing the wrong way and I'm just not realizing it."
Blayde blinked, and stood up, frowning. "Demons, hm. Demons...demons...."
Wandering over to a shelf a few up from Neko, he started scanning through the titles. "Diablo....dinosaurs.....demolition....demons!"
"So. The books on demons START here...and end....uh....there, I think."
He pointed to a spot at least two shelves down below the book that 'started' the run of demons. "They're...ah....a popular subject, it seems."
Tempest nodded, happy that she had found a way to keep her guest happy. "Okay! Follow me!"
Jumping up off the crystal and getting her wings humming, she started off down the hallway into a more run-down but still safe area of the ruins.
Neko twitched slightly as he saw all the books, wondering how there could possibly be that much information. Then again...there were many types of demons out there.
"Can you do me a bit of a favor?" picking up one more book from the shelf. "Can you help me find any information possible on tab--...I mean, hanyous? Demon-humans, anthros, half demons, elves...ANYTHING. I'm wondering if my blood is what's hindering the spells and potions I've checked."
Tahki grinned, fluttering her wings a little bit before lifting into the air, easily following after Tempest. Her yellow eyes darted around the ruins a little bit, glancing curiously at the surroundings. She'd never really seen anything like this before...and it was just amazing! Something that seemed so old, yet advanced. How do they do stuff like that?
Tempest giggled and finally landed on a little pillar that probably once held something for display...but now remained empty. She motioned Takhi over and to be quiet, and silently edged to the end of the little platform and pointed at a little brown mouse, nibbling on something in the corner. When she spoke, it was in the tiniest whisper possible, even by feien standards.
"He comes here a lot. I leave him food."
Blayde shrugged, scratching an ear as he began searching through the book titles. "Hmmm....wide range of subjects."
He began pulling down a couple books...including one simply massive tome. "This one...archive of the high points of lots of demons. Hrn........elves...elves......weres..........half-breeds........human-breed mixes......hm..........."
Tahki, as quietly as possible, fluttered over to land next to Tempest, drawing her wings close to her back to keep them out of the way. Peering over the edge carefully, she seemed to brighten as she saw the small furry creature, eyes growing wider with excitement. He was so cuuuute! All adorable and fuzzy and tiny and snacking on something.
"He's very cute," she smiled, trying to speak in the smallest voice she could.
Neko held the book he was holding closer to his face for a moment, searching the words on the page before realizing the faults. Gah, another spell that wouldn't work... Flipping through a few more pages, he closed the book and carefully put it away, searching for one about demons.
"I suppose in a way, it might be easier to search for taboo children," he sighed, hating the word. It always made him feel like he'd been some sort of mistake, being born a half breed. Well, not that he wasn't, but he wanted to feel that he actually had a purpose for being in this plane. "Also, something called the "tainted"..."
Picking up one of the books amoung the shelves indicated to carry the books about demons, he opened it up and began to search. If he was lucky, he could find one that might possibly have information about the light demons...even if it was doubtful.
Blayde chuckled to himself as he put down a small - but heavy, thanks to that one tome - stack of books on the center table and went to see if he had missed anything important.
"The problem with 'taboo children' is that 'taboo' by nature is a cultural thing. Bile demons - " (he waved a book at her before placing it back on the shelf) " - are very very upset if their kids can't spew heavily acidic bile at birth....while most human mothers would probably be very very upset if their children did."
Sitting down with only an extra book or two, he started with the big tome, flipping through to find half-breed demons.
Tempest, too, spoke as low as she possibly could. "I know~! Isn't he? I want to have him as a pet.....though I don't know if he'd be HAPPY as my pet. I want him to be happy! He's too cute not to be happy."
"Blayde-kun? A taboo child, in my case, would be a demon half-breed. They call my kind hanyou, taboo, screw ups..." He sighed lightly. "Taboo is the most common term among man. Hanyou was more of something I picked up from more oriental cultures...it's just another name. Just...another label."
Peering back into the book he was holding, Neko searched the pages again for the "tainted" he kept dreaming about. Perhaps this would be a good time to look up something on that demon "Sin" Domonic had mentioned when he first arrived. A mistake on his own part, as he'd quickly tried to cover it up, but still.
"By the way...thank you."
Tahki giggled silently, drawing her wings closer to her back. It would have been nice to get a closer look, but she also didn't want to scare the creature. ...What if he tried to attack them?
"Tempest, has he ever tried to bite you or anything?" she asked curiously in a tiny voice.
Tempest shook her head. "Nope. Every time I try to catch him, he always just runs back into his holes...but I don't want to chase him in there. It's tiny...and dark...and dirty!"
"He's really, really cute to watch, though!!" heart
Blayde chuckled to himself. "You're more than welcome."
"My point, though, stands. Yeah, half-breeds are 'taboo' to most people, but there are a few cultures that don't mind them at all. My home village is pretty kind to demons and half-breeds, now-a-days..........then again, that might have something to do with........ah."
Blayde frowns as he reads, unpleasant memories rising to the surface; memories of when he incinerated most of the village and half the people in it, in grief and rage.
"Never mind."
He sighed and kept searching through the book. "Lots on half-breeds of various types...but nothing about gender-changing. The only useful thing I've found so far is that some half-breeds react really oddly to some magic, but even that's vague and unresearched. Too many combinations, hey?"
Tahki thought for a moment, looking to the mouse again before looking at her arm. She was possibly fast enough to catch him...but with her arm broken, all she'd be able to do was get right next to him. If only she hadn't hurt it last night...
"Maybe when my arm gets better, I could help you try to catch him? I'm pretty fast," she whispered softly, looking over to Tempest.
"But that's only in some places, Blayde-kun, that's the point. Nowadays they weren't called Taboos, but these ARE older books. Back then, people like me weren't given the time of day...you only caught a simple glimpse of what I had to put up with for centuries," Neko explained. "Anyway...back to this..."
"Yes...way too many combinations to search for. I'd be more specific, but there isn't any recorded information for Light Demons. Everything I had found out was thanks to Raven-kun or knowledge I had always possessed."
Closing the book, Neko placed it back on the shelf, flicking his tail a little bit. Reacting strangely to magic... Perhaps that had grown greater when he changed. After all, different magic did seem to affect his female body in different ways, and yet...nothing was causing his markings to even so much as appear. Was that an effect of the transformation as well?
"Well, thanks for trying, anyway. I at least have something to theorize for a while," he sighed, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he looked down at a few more book spines. "At least now I have a partial idea as to why nothing's working."
Blayde put down the last of his books, having been searching through what little bits of them might have been helpful...and having found nothing of interest.
"Yeah........sorry I couldn't help more than I did."
He chuckled tiredly, and idly smoothed his tail. "On the upside, if you ever do figure it out and need anything to help you change back, I just might have it...and if I don't, I can try my hardest to get it."
Tempest giggled at her friend. She could finally have the mouse! But....
"I don't think so. It's fun to try and catch him, but I don't think he'd be very happy as a pet."
She giggled again, softly. "Besides, now I'm too big to ride him!"
Neko smiled slightly, flicking his tail as he shrugged a little bit. "If I find out anything and I don't have it myself, then of course I'd really appreciate the help," he replied. "At this point, however, I have a feeling very little can be done..."
Perking his ears a little bit, the demon hanyou looked around the room for a moment. "You...wouldn't happen to know where Tahki and Tempest are, would you?"
Tahki smiled, nodding a little bit. "Even if you let him go afterwards?" she asked curiously, her long ears twitching slightly.
Blayde laughed, and ran a hand back through his hair. "No, not off the top of my head, but I can guess. I'll get 'em back here, though."
He walked over to a rope hanging next to a curious full-length mirror on one side of the room, and pulled it. From deep within the bowels of the ruins, a deep, rumbling gong sounded.
Tempest grinned. "Nah! He'd probably be scared of us. He's just a little mousie, y'know. I bet tha--"
She stopped and cocked her head to the side as a loud noise rumbled through the room - a noise that also scared the mouse back into its hole.
"Woops! I guess we've been gone too long....Blayde's calling us back!"
Tahki's ears perked up slightly at the sound, watching the mouse run back into its sanctuary. Awww, the noise scared it away! Then again, there was probably a reason for Tempest's bond to be calling them back.
"That must mean Neko wants to go home," she pouted a little bit, sitting up before standing upright. She stretched her back a little bit before looking to her friend. "I wish I could come back by myself... but Neko probably won't let me."
Neko's ears folded back against his head for a moment before he shook his head, smirking a little.
"Why does that just seem so like you to have?"
Blayde threw a roguish grin Neko's way. "It's loud, attention-grabbing, and way out of place?"
"Honestly, though? It was here when I moved in to the place. Had to get a new rope, of course. Never have been able to find the gong itself."
"Awww. Still, maybe you can come over again some time!!"
Tempest smiled warmly, stretching her legs once before jumping off the platform they had sat on, her wings humming into action before she lost much height...and then took off down a mostly-straight corridor towards the main room.
"Race you back!"
"Exactly," he chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "That was always your sort of thing, anyway."
"You can't find the gong?" That had to be a little odd. Hearing the noise and not knowing where it came from. "Then again, there may be a reason for that, as well. The sound seems to echo a bit...evenly, if that makes any sense."
Tahki giggled, immediately taking flight and coming up rather quickly behind Tempest. Racing was perhaps the only thing this feien was any good at.
"You're on!" she called, just as she flew right along side the yellow feien.
Poopie. Tahki's really, really fast.
Tempest grinned to herself as she put on as much speed as she could. This'll be fun!
Blayde shook his head. "That's what never made sense to me. It's not magic, because one would be able to SEE that. FEEL that. I just can't for the life of me find the blasted thing...the walls here echo deep sounds too well."
Tahki kept on straight ahead, looking over her shoulder to make sure Tempest was still right behind her. While she was flying quickly, she couldn't fly at full speed due to worrying over her arm. After a moment, the cold feien allowed Tempest to pass her, intending to speed up again just before reaching the room their bonds were in.
"What I'm trying to say is that maybe it's hidden for a reason. Perhaps the dong was supposed to be like some...bad form of an emergency call?" Neko suggested, shrugging his shoulders. "If anything, it could be hidden by magic... Or some sort of device, given that this place is somewhat more advanced."
Blayde shrugged. "Maybe. There was SOMETHING nesting in it the first time I rang it."
He almost...giggled? "They weren't very happy."
Tempest giggled to herself. She was winning!
Only a little bit to go...I can see the door~!
Neko raised a brow at him before shaking his head again. Always causing mischief, even if it was in innocence. His ears twitched slightly as he heard a soft humming noise approaching the room, turning his gold eyes toward the door.
"If I knew any better, I'd have to say that they're just about here," he commented lightly. "Or, you have a very bad bug problem."
There! Smiling to herself, a part of Tahki wanted to let Tempest win. However, she knew that not doing anything with one's all was never a good victory. Beating her large wings a little quicker, the red and black feien quickly caught up to Tempest, and just as they reached the door passed her only by about a head's length.
Blayde grinned to himself. "Well, yes. Those things I mentioned that were nesting at the gong? They're....oh.....yea tall."
He held his hand above the floor at about chest height. "Not very smart, though. I'd call 'em a 'bug problem'."
Tempest pouted playfully, and flitted in little circles around Tahki. "You held back!"
Tahki grinned sheepishly, giggling a little bit and rubbing the back of her neck as she slowed down.
"I'm sorry! I won't next time?" she piped up, cantering her head a little bit.
"Those...are some pretty big bugs, Blayde-kun," Neko blinked, flicking his tail a little bit. "Though, I take it they're gone..."
Looking to the two feien that entered the room, he smiled a little bit, stretching out his arms before resting his hands on his hips. He didn't particularly want to seperate them so soon, especially since it seemed to have been such a long time since they saw each other, but he needed to get home.
"Are you ready to go, Tahki?" he asked.
Tahki frowned slightly, her long ears drooping a little more than usual. "I guess..." she answered reluctantly.
Blayde shrugged. "At least only those ones can fly. The big ones are nastier."
"It was great having you over, hey? You two should drop in again! Maybe you'll manage to catch us when Kara's around."
That seemed really funny to him...but he wasn't sure why.
Tempest waved to Tahki, flitting around Blayde's shoulders. "Byyyyyyyye~! It was fun!!"
Tahki used her good arm to hug Tempest quickly before flitting over to Neko.
"Bye, Tempest! I hope I'll be able to see you again! I'll try to get Neko to come back soon so I can come with him!" she called, waving from her bond's shoulder.
Neko's ears twitched slightly, his gold eyes peering down at Tahki before he looked back to Blayde. "Unless... I find something out, I think it would be best I come back when I'm actually turned back to normal, if that's all right. Perhaps I can get Domonic to come along next time, as well, hm?" he smiled, lifting a hand to wave.
"It really was nice to see you again... Even if the situation may have been a little more the awkward. I'd hug you, but... I doubt you'd like that very much and it would be incredibly strange to me."
Turning to the door, he waved a little bit to Tempest as well as he walked toward it. "And I can't say this enough. Thank you for trying to help," he added.
