D put his head against his partner. "Its not what you think..." he said haltingly. "I...I just...I feel this is my fault...." he said shaking against York. "I don't want you to hate me..." He closed his eyes tight and tried to calm down. "I love you so much, York...I need you..."
He began to calm a little as York curled his tail around the two of them. "I'm sorry...I...I just don't know what to do..." he said. "This isn't something I've ever thought I'd have to deal with. I know we can figure this out...I...I think I may be temporarily overloaded...I can't control my actions right now...I'm sorry..." D said as he tried to get back to normal. His shakes started to subside but were still hard on him. He'd need to check himself later. The last thing they needed was him developing some sort of fatal error in is program.
"I'll be alright..." he said burying his head in York's chest as the spasms finished. "I promise I'll be alright..."

"I don't hate you, D," York murmured. "I don't think I could ever hate you. And I need you too. I need your love just as much as you need mine." He could feel D trying to calm down and he held D tighter, as if letting go would drive his partner away from him.
"This is as much my fault as yours," he added gently. He hoped he could calm D down; panic attacks were bad enough in normal foxes, but panic attacks in AIs were the stuff of freelancer nightmare. "So...if we are equally to blame, let's not blame each other, okay? And to be perfectly honest," he chuckled, "I never thought I'd have to worry about this either. There is nothing to be sorry about," he added in a more serious tone. "As I said, we can pull through. We can always pull through." He stroked D's soft fur, taking comfort in his partner's nearness. Together we can face anything; together, we can raise our kids and keep us all safe.
York smiled as D buried his head in his chest. "I love you, D. I'm so glad you're alright."

D looked up at York eyes full of relief, he then returned his head to York's chest and nodded. "You're right..." he mummered. "You're right...We'll be fine. We just need to think this through." he nuzzled York enjoying the feel of his partners fur against his face. "I love you too York, so much..." he wrapped his own arms around York and held him tight. "I don't know what I would do without you."
Something then dawned on D. "I left the laundry down stairs." he said sighing. "And you really need to finish the lock for the back door now..." he trailed off and looked up at York. "Hold me for just a little bit longer though? Please?" he whispered. "I need this right now..." he said trailing off and putting his head against York again. "I need this so much right now..."

"Let's hope we never have to find out what happens without each other," York murmured. "I have infinite confidence in our ability to think things through...together. It'll take a lot of work; I'm only worried whether we'll do a good job or not." He sighed and closed his eyes. Every time he and D held each other, time slipped away, an unimportant and shriveled frivolity to be ignored.
York looked at D as he mentioned their chores for the day. "Yes, I do need to finish the lock." He cursed mentally as the worries of the day flowed back, first a trickle, then a flood. He wished fervently, as he had often before, that they didn't have to worry and could have all the time in the world to themselves. But D was right; the fire escape was a liability not only to the possibility to breaking and entering, but also to the possibility that a clumsy kit could slip and fall...Just what we need. More foxes to worry about. He was glad that D asked him to hold him longer. He needed this, too--a chance to relax and assure himself that not all of the changes in his life were nasty and dangerous; some of them he could--and would--never live without. "I need this now, too..."

D nuzzled York. He mentally cursed his inability to ignore things. He figured he interrupted more moments between the two of them because he couldn't keep his mouth shut. He sighed inwardly. At least York was understanding. "Thank you..." he muttered. "For being so understanding." He curled his own tail around his partner and sighed contentedly.

"It's the least I could do. You've been patient enough with my paranoia. It wouldn't be right if I wasn't understanding for you." He gave his own contented sigh in response to D's, masking his own disappointment. Why is it that whenever we are having a perfectly romantic moment, we have to get interrupted? Not that it's D's fault; he was programmed to be more observant, more intelligent than a normal fox. York adamantly refused to admit now that D was anything other than a living, breathing being. No ordinary program could make him feel this way, could melt his heart and worries. He couldn't deny that D was different, but then, wasn't everyone different from the rest of the world?
Slowly, his chores began to drag York away. He kissed D and slowly let go.

D slowly let York go savored the kiss he received. He then sighed and changed his appearance and ran down stairs for the laundry. He bounced back up, opened the lock and sat the bag down the middle of the living room. He'd fold it in a few minutes. He went back into the bedroom and looked down at the bowls.
"Umm..." he looked around the room and then moved them to the tables on either side of the bed. "That has to be a safer place...I think anyway..." he said. He then finished picking up the bedroom and went in the bath and cleaned up in there.
Once he was done he went back in the living room and started on the laundry. "Are you okay?" he asked York. He wasn't exactly sure what he meant by the question but if nothing else he'd eventually get the answer he was unknowingly looking for.

As soon as D had left, York had remained rooted to the spot for a few seconds afterward. He closed his eyes and hummed blissfully, then, taking down his kit and starting to whistle, he had got back to work. He felt part of him settling into the center he retreated to when he did his work as a locksmith, but another, higher part of him flew higher than the rest. As D came in with the laundry bag, he looked up and smiled briefly.
Names. The thought came to him suddenly. We ought to start thinking of names for the kits... He shuddered and shook his head. That felt like something that was sure to throw him into a panic attack. Best not mention it to D. I mean, we ought to have an idea, but not yet. We don't have to worry about it yet.
"I'm fine," he said in response to D's question. "In fact, I'm feeling really good. I think I could get this done today." He looked at D. "Why, why do you ask? Are you alright?"

D sat and folded a set of kitchen towels and nodded. "Yes, I'm fine. I just wanted to make sure you were alright." he said putting the towels down and pulled out a few more things. "We...we should think about what to do when the they show up...I guess we'll have to move the things out of the second bedroom and change it around a bit." he said and then looked at York. "Unless you don't want to talk about it." he said looking abashed.

Startled, York dropped one of his tools. He stared for a second, then chuckled and scooped it back up. "D, once more you save us both. We should definitely clean up the second bedroom. But may I finish this first?" he asked, trying his hardest to keep the whine out of his voice. "I'd like to get this done as soon as possible. I don't think I'll sleep well if I didn't finish it tonight. After that, we can get the other room done." Lucky for us we don't have all that much...should I ask him about names?

D sighed in relief that he hadn't sent York into a panic attack. He was sure that if York had one right now he'd probably have one of his own in short order.
He sighed, shook his head and smiled at York. He then went around the table and nuzzled his partner. "Of course you can." he said trying to keep from laughing. York could be childish sometimes, but he usually had a reason for it. "Finish up while I get this stuff put away." he said. "Then we'll get the bedroom straight, and then you are making yourself dinner to night." he nuzzled York one more time and then went to put the laundry away.

"Yes, Delta!" York said meekly. He grinned and nuzzled D back. He didn't take very good care of himself; he doubted that any of the freelancers did. Do the job, get paid, on to the next assignment. With so much fighting, living a healthy was the least of their worries. How long can someone live if they're always thrust into combat, back and forth, never resting, always fighting? He smiled bitterly. Good thing the government never tried to experiment on that. Or rather, I'm glad that didn't seem to be their experiment on D and me. With their homicidal curiosity, I'd pity the agent who had to live through that.
Humming once more and trying to maintain a cheery outlook, York continued his work.

D smiled to himself as he went in the kitchen with the towels he placed them in the drawer and then did the breakfast dishes. Once finished he went back in the living room and folded the extra sheets and went in the bedroom and put them away. He then went back into the living room folded the towels for the bath and stashed them away.
He wandered back into the living room and sat down across from York. He pushed up his glasses and then put his head on the table and watched York work. What was the point of putting us together... he wondered. It was one of the things he thought about in his down time or when ever he watched York. Was it because York's anti-social and I was one of the best behaved AI's of the group? Although thats not fair to Theta...not that I knew him very well... D have an involuntary shudder about who he had had to work with. The decided bad crowd among the AI's Epsilon, Omega and Gamma. Or was it to see if I'd go crazy having to work with them... he gave a mental shrug he'd probably never know but it gave him something to think about.

After about half an hour, York took a small rest. He didn't want to tire his eye out. He smiled when he saw that D was watching him. "Almost done," he promised. "I'd guess...another hour at most. This lock is just like the front door, it opens the same way. Not that I think you'll have to open it that often, but you never know, right?"
I wonder what he's thinking...worrying about the future? Our future? Or is he remembering the past? He sighed. I wonder how much of our past will come back to haunt us. Some of it does, but what about the outside past? Our memories of the other agents and AIs are still here, but will we ever have to meet them face-to-face? I hope not. There's so much more at stake now...before, we could pick ourselves up after a screw-up; we could get up and move somewhere else. We don't have a lot. Food we can get anywhere, books are just as easily available. I've had to rebuild my lock kits several times. But now that we have bowls...we can't mess up. We're anchored here. We could never afford a mistake before, but now, more than ever, we can't. Not when there are lives at stake, more lives than just us. The government put us together, but the kids are going to keep us together. York snorted. Though it's not as if we'd leave each other...ever.

D smiled at York and nodded. "You never know." he agreed. Then something struck him. We won't be able to go out to do jobs together...someone will have to stay with the kits until they get a little more security savvy... he frowned as that occurred to him. I know he can build devices for foiling camera's but its so much simpler when I can do it for him... D sighed.
In the back of his mind he'd known they way they lived was going to change, but it really hadn't occurred to him just how much. We'll just have to do the best we can...thats all we can do. he thought to himself. "I'll get you something to drink and a snack." he said getting up and going to the kitchen. He returned a few minutes later with an apple some peanut butter, crackers and some water.
"Here." he said putting the plate down in front of York and then going back to his side of the table. He sat back down and put his head on the table. He let a silence develop and then looked at York. "Do you think we're going to be alright?" he asked letting his ears droop. Before life had been hard but it had been easy to pick up and move again...now that had changed radically, and a lot more was riding on there security precautions.
