Rikku de Lioncourt I'm taking an A-level in French, and have studied it for 6 years. Altough I'm not fluent in it, I know enough to get by ^^; Though my A-level course focuses more on issues and literature than the actual language itself. I've seen a good number of French films, like Mon Pere ce Heros, Une Long Dimanche de Fiancailles and of course, Amelie. I've also read the first Harry Potter book in French, though struggled because of the past historic @_@ I dislike the tense a lot and my teacher refuses to teach it to us anyway since it's only used in novels.color] Sounds like your French is really good. I can't really understand movies in French, thogh I have read some books in my French class, I don't think I could fully understand Harry Potter I in French. Rikku de Lioncourt Ainsi, avez-vous lu "L'etranger" par Albert Camus? Non, je n'ai pas lu "L'etranger", mais quand j'etais aux Etats-Unis quelques amis ont le lu en anglais. Tu aimes Albert Camus? Peut-etre je vais aller a la bibliotheque pour l'emprunter. Tu as lu 'Candide' par Voltaire? J'aime ce livre beaucoup!

Tu as lu 'Candide' par Voltaire? J'aime ce livre beaucoup! Personnellement, je n'aime pas Albert Camus, mais, j'aime L'etranger. C'est un livre qui est tres bizare. Je voudrais lire 'Les Miserables' par Victor Hugo, mais c'est tres long. 'Candide'? Non. Est-ce bon? ^^

Ok...I never thought I would post in the French GD...I already feel lost. surprised
But, since I'm advanced a level in Spanish, the guidance counsler said it would be great if I could take French too...so could somebody teach me a few basic phrases and words so I know what I'm dealing with? I'm seriously contemplating it. 3nodding

I'm seriously contemplating it. 3nodding OMFG-ness... I definately recommend it blaugh For one thing, it's one of those "big" languages. If you know English, Spanish, and French, you will be able to communicate with almost every person living in North/South America and Europe. Another thing is that it's quite a bit like Spanish. You will probably find it fairly easy, because a lot of the vocabulary and grammar is similar to Spanish 3nodding Anyway, some simple stuff in French: 1 - un 2 - deux 3 - trois 4 - quatre 5 - cinq 6 - six 7 - sept 8 - huit 9 - neuf 10 - dix Monday - lundi Tuesday - mardi Wednesday - mercredi Thursday - jeudi Friday - vendredi Saturday -samedi Sunday - dimanche January - janvier Febuary - fevrier March - mars April -avril May - mai June - juin July - juillet August - aout Septembre - septembre Octobre - octobre November - novembre Decembre - decembre

I shall try my best ninja (litte side note: the stress always goes on the last syllable of the word 3nodding )
un - "uhn" deux - du (the u sound is like that "uh..." sound you make when you're unsure of something) trois - trwa (the r is pronounced by placing your tongue in the back of your mouth, at the bottom, and then making a sort of choking sound... tis hard to explain >.<) quatre - kat-ruh cinq - sank six - sees (like the English word cease, but with an s sound at the end instead of a z sound) sept - set huit - weet (like the English word wheat) neuf - nuf (the u here is the same u sound as in "deux") dix - dees
lundi - lun-dee mardi - mar-dee mercredi - mer-kruh-dee jeudi - ju-di (the u here is like the u sound in "deux") vendredi - von-dre-dee samedi - sam-dee dimanche - dee-mohn-sh
janvier - john-vee-eh (the j is like the 2nd g in garage, and the 'eh' at the end is like that Canadian expression razz ) fevrier - fev-ree-eh (again like the Canadian expression...) mars - mah-rs avril - av-reel mai -may-ee juin -joo-ee-ehn juillet -joo-ee-yay aout -ah-ou-ee septembre -sep-tom-br octobre - ok-tobr novembre - no-vom-br (the first syllable is pronounced like the English word "no") decembre - du-som-br (the u in the first syllable is pronounced like the u sound in "deux")
I hope that helped a bit. sweatdrop I don't have a mic though, so I can't really let you hear the words. I'll try to find a pronounciation guide for you though ninja

To me it seems as if French and Spanish have a lot of cognates. Especially a lot of verbs look or sound similar. Here are just some of them: dormir = dormir correr = courir cantar = chanter estar/ser = etre esperar = esperer ver = voir venir = venir comprender = comprendre leer = lire creer = croire

This shows that knowing Spanish does help if you're learning French. If you like Spanish so much I think you'll like French too, and there's always this thread for you. Rikku de Lioncourt Y - egrec (Is that right? @_@ ) I think that's right, may be more like e-crec. I remember when I was in year 10, I was the only one in the class with a y in my name, and we had to spell our names out, and I kept forgetting how to pronounce the y. gonk Now I'll never forget it.
