"Starr is right," Lin replied looking over to the twins, "After all paper is cost a lot, and besides it's always nice to get books. As for the bento boxes they are a type of meal just packed into a box that's all, but they can get really fancy if you wanted them to."
"You could be right about that..." Donovan murmured.
Though it was a wonder why they hadn't be out right attacked, after all they could gather up an army of people it had been done.

Alyse's eyes grew wide with awe, and she clung a bit more tightly to Feng's hand.
"That must be really really far away," she murmured, stopping them once they got to the edge of the trees. There, she knelt on the ground, tugging Feng to the ground with her. They were beside a particularly large tree that had tendrils of ivy or something similar twisting around its trunk. There was a hole in the tree, a niche right close to the ground that was just big enough for Alyse to climb into if she so wished.
"Look," she murmured, pointing inside the hole and beckoning for Feng to look in there.
"Something productive?" Adanedhel repeated curiously. "Like what?"
He could understand about the griffin needing more room, though, he knew that most animals - especially ones this big - needed all the room they could have, a wide range of mileage to wander in. He stroked Tao's head affectionately as he waited for Ryu's answer.
Aragost sat back a bit, still kneeling on the floor as he waited for Miyu to finish what she was doing. He had spent quite a bit of time in the past few years with Adonai, who had taught him to read the letters of the Gaians, specifically so that he would be able to read the books that Miyu brought him.
"And what is in the box?" he asked softly, his cowl nodding gently at the box that Miyu had taken out of her bag with the books.

Haradhel nodded at Cindy. "That was eleven years ago already," she agreed, "so he must be ... at least nineteen by now, an adult in any case. And I'm sure you'll be glad to know that we were able to restore his tongue ... though I have to admit that I have no idea how Ulani did it."
She shrugged and sat at one of the tables, holding Timaeus on her lap, then looked seriously at Donovan. "I still feel safe here on the ranch with Arwen and Ahren, and now with the new baby coming ... but I don't think that Ulani or Ulrich or Aliya or Amdir feel very safe out in the valley anymore. It's always been one of the safest places in the Four Lands, for as long as they can remember, just because it's so hard to get into ... but ... after Adan's kidnapping, it doesn't feel like it for them anymore. The only thing is, they don't want to move out here to where it is safe."

Storm was getting bored already, and his fidgeting proved it.
"So what are we going to do all day?" he asked, reaching out and stroking the air in front of him. "Just sit here?"
Starr reached out and slapped Storm's hand angrily. "No magic," she reprimanded him harshly. "And stop being rude!"
Storm sighed and leaned back against the wall, folding his arms against his chest. "Well I'm bored, I want to do something."
"Maybe we can go find Nako," Starr offered. "That would be nice to see her again, right?"
Storm's white eyes lit up with pleasure at the idea. "Yeah, let's do that!" he agreed. "Hey Lin we're going to go find Nako, want to come?"

Feng bent over to look inside, not knowing what to expect in the hole. It could be anything and she knew that from experience from the hallowed out tree that use to be Yuki's before he grew too big to go into it.
"What's there?"
"Tao was originally trained as a guardian against... well I'm not sure, I think it was monsters or something of that nature. When mother was younger and there was less of us, she was recruited to be Tao's keeper, but after the place closed she kept Tao, but as a teacher she doesn't really get into that much trouble anymore, and besides she has Wish to protect her if anything goes wrong."
Kara mused on this, drumming her fingers on the table top. She wondered... yes, yes that would work she was sure it would, but that would require additional training, but the bases for it was there.
"I can't blame them, they had been living there for so long and they had other children before Aliya and Adonai, I mean... Ulani and Ulrich. Though.. I think there is a way to give a bit more safety to the children at least, but I have to talk about it with Admir."
Miyu looked up at Aragost with a smile as she held the bento box up to him, "Bento box! It has food inside for you."
Which was the point of a bento box, but for those who liked to have a bit more fun with their food it could also be a work of art. Inside the typically three compartment box were things that Triton helped the girls make. The larger compartment at riceballs which Miyu chose to stuff with smoked eel. They were supposed to be moons, but they looked kind of fat for moons. There were spring rolls made from thin rice wrapping paper and inside were lettce, carrots, and sweet peppers all lined up in one of the smaller compartments. And in the last compartment was desert, of three little star shaped tarts filled with custard and topped with a blackberry.

Lin then remembered the other reason why she didn't want to have the twins along. Not that she minded Starr, but Storm sometimes (most of the time) did not understand that she had no trouble with just talking. It was odd if one thought about it, Lin was nearly the same age as the twins if not a few days younger, but she already preferred to talk since to her that was doing something.
"I'm coming, but we stay on the Ranch," she told them.
She knew Serenity was supposed to be around here somewhere so she couldn't be far, but she also knew Serenity sometimes helped out. Lin had learnt life here wasn't as safe, she was not going off the Ranch to look for Serenity.
Contrary to belief, Lin was crazy, but she was not that crazy.
"You've figured out what to do with the resident birdbrain?" Donvoan asked in jest.
Tao wasn't really a birdbrain... most of the time. It was just she was very loving.

Alyse reached into the hole and pulled out two rocks - one the size of her fist, and one slightly bigger. They were an average shade of gray, but they had pale greenish white lines running through them. She held the larger one out to Feng, smiling brightly, though still shyly.
Adan was in awe. "You have monsters in your world?" he asked Ryu eagerly. "What kind of monsters? Are they big and scary or can you have some of them as pets?"
Aragost took the box gently from Miyu, then opened it up and peered inside. He didn't recognize most of the food that was in it, but he had to admit that it looked quite delicious - and very cute.
"You made it just for me?" he beamed, looking back at Miyu again. "It looks absolutely wonderful! Thank you very much!"

Haradhel looked between Kara and Donovan curiously.
"What are you talking about?" she asked suspiciously. "Birdbrain? A pet, then?"
Of course if it provided more safety for Aliya and Amdir, she was certain that they would take it - but still, she was curious to know for herself what it was.

Storm grinned and jumped to his feet again. "Yeah, that's okay with us," he agreed with Lin's condition. "But you have to tell us where the ranch starts and stops, because we don't know it at all."
"Maybe you could show us around," Starr suggested, "since you know everyone here, and what everything is."
"Yeah!" Storm agreed enthusiastically. "That would be really neat! Can you, Lin?"
Elnara couldn't help but giggle a bit at Donovan's words, but she cleared her throat to stop herself and asked, "Birdbrain, Donovan? She's not that bad, she just loves attention, is all."

"Eh?" Feng looked at the stone taking it gently, she supposed it they were pretty.
It kind of reminded her of when she and Ryu went stone hunting as children, though they did do that still sometimes. Though quite rarely.
"Well.... I think when you call them a monster you can't really have them as pets," Ryu replied wryly, "I mean... I've never seen a monster, and I know most of the pets we keep tend to be odd by normal people's standards."
Miyu smiled brightly she was glad because that was her first time cooking and she knew quite well that her father and uncle were incapable of cooking. She wasn't sure about her mother, but as far as she knew her mother never cooked.
"I'm glad, I've never made things to eat before, but Uncle Triton said, that most of it didn't need to be cooked and the stuff that did need to be cooked he cooked it."
Kara nodded, "Her name is Tao, I've had her since she was in an egg, but unfortunately she needs more room to roam in. She's really sweet, and well trained, but it would take a bit more training for her to be used as a guard."

"There's an understatement," Donovan murmured.
He cleared his throat for a moment before explaining to Haradhel. Since he didn't know how much Elrohir had told her about his travels with him.
"Tao is a griffin that Kara raised way back before I was hired on at the school."
Since he couldn't say it was before they met, they had met way long before then.
Lin thought about it, she supposed if they stayed to the field, the stable and then to the Ranch house it wouldn't be so bad. After all there wasn't a whole lot as long as they didn't go into the forest around the Ranch, which was where she wanted to avoid.
".... Alright," she murmured.

Alyse smiled and set her own stone down, then reached out and cupped Feng's hands around the stone she had given her.
"Make it warm," she murmured softly, her bright eyes glowing with eagerness.
Adan nodded thoughtfully. "Well, I guess Mama wouldn't let me have a monster anyways," he shrugged. "I'm surprised she's actually going to let us keep Tao, she always said I couldn't have a griffin for a pet either. But Tao is different from other griffins ..."
He stroked Tao's chest almost massagingly, affectionately.
Aragost smiled warmly at Miyu. "I'm sure that it will be just fine," he assured her. "Should we eat it right away or will it wait until dinner?"

Haradhel looked a little doubtful. "A griffin?" she repeated. "That's ..."
She trailed off. She had known that strange things happened in Gaia, but she had never heard of a griffin being tamed before.
"Are you certain it's safe?" she asked hesitantly.

Starr smiled at Lin and grabbed her twin's hand so that he wouldn't run off without them or try any forbidden magic. "Let's go then," she said happily.
"Bye, Mr Dark man!" Storm waved cheerfully, heading for the door.

"Yes, that is what I've heard," Ryu murmured, "At least not like your griffins right?"
He watched as Tao looked like she was in heaven being stroked like that. She ruffled her feathers and leaned a bit into Adan.
"Make it warm?" Feng looked at it before rubbing the stone, seeing it was the only way she could think of, of making it warm.
Kara nodded knowing why Haradhel wasn't so sure about the idea of having Tao. She learned that griffins are normally dangerous creatures unless you were a certain attention seeking griffin.
"I'm very sure, the only thing she's attacked are squirrels, fish, rabbits... well no not rabbits anymore. I had to teach her rabbits weren't griffin food after Mia began keeping some for pets, but she'll hunt small game and eat them.. if she doesn't decide to try and share it first."
"It'll be fine for dinner," Miyu replied.
That was the good thing about bento boxes and besides it was Fading so she didn't have to worry about anything spoiling then.
