Stumbling, and not expecting the change in demeanor so rapidly, Baki regained his footing and glared at the offending log. Shaking his mane again, he lifted his paws one by one to check for pain; the fall had not injured his legs, so he could relax now. Ears pricked high, he rubbed his head against Maya's stomach, content. It had been some time since they had last fought, and it was nice to go back to some of the things they'd done before they had had to go off on missions and all that. Tired now, though happy, Baki yawned, stifling a self-rewarding roar (he saw himself the victor, of course, since Maya had yielded). With that, he plopped down on the ground, stretching out and promptly closing his eyes. He wasn't sleepy, his body needed to recover. However, he was thinking the whole while of better ways to incapacitate an enemy...maybe he'd get around to actually using the energy within him, that stuff that the rest of the shinobi called 'chakra'. He knew Maya didn't use it much either, so perhaps they should both start thinking about it in terms of getting stronger...

Maya stretched her legs, wiggling her cold toes and contemplating, what else?, the next big fight. There weren't many genin that would take her on head to head, especially since she was training to be as good, if not better, than her aunt, who was the greatest taijutsu user Maya had ever seen. She was considered a master on the island, so Maya wanted to be just like her. With a smile on her face, the girl opened her mouth and caught the falling snowflakes. Soon the cold would seep in through her bones, and she'd probably pay for it later, but for now she was content to let it sooth her muscles. She knew it was likely that there would be a dark stain on the ground when she got up, and it would probably be smart on her behalf to wash her face before approaching anyone, but Maya didn't feel like getting up. She wanted to rest and then fight with someone again. Actually...maybe she should just train. Between her and Baki, they were horrible at dodging incoming attacks. Maya had trained so hard on controlling her weapon, and at being strong so that her blows would be heavy, she hadn't concentrated on how fast she should probably be. Aya was a master in that area; the skinny girl was fast, and had mastered a ton of ninjutsu already! She was good with her chakra; Maya considered training her chakra as well, though she hated very much trying to control something she couldn't see without effort. With a sigh, the girl brought her uninjured arm to her face and covered her eyes.
She was bored.

Maya inhaled, exhaled....then sneezed. Oh...crap. Maya rubbed her nose and sat up, the snow that had settled on her torso falling lightly to the ground. Well, it was probably unwise to sit outside while it snowed, and with torn clothes no less. Damn, but she hated the winter. She sighed, rubbing her hands together. She hadn't realized it was getting colder - wasn't the sun going to come out today? Maya wiggled her toes again; they were numb too though, and Maya bit her lower lip. The cold had chapped her lips, and cracked them, so the habit she'd almost grown out of caused her lower lip to bleed. The sharp winter chill made her shiver, and she sighed again. Where was her aunt when she needed her the most? Maya was unsure of what to do, and decided that, other than get into a tent and bear the cold, there had to be something interesting to do while staying warm at the same time. But what? She definitely didn't know, and she didn't want to leave the grounds. Shinichi-sama at the academy was evil, and there wasn't much of anywhere else she wanted to go that would result in something good. But maybe if she thought hard, something would come to her.

Baki snorted, shaking his head in disgust as clear, viscous fluid fell from his nose to the snowy ground. His entire back and his mane were covered in white flakes, and rolling around would not do him any good. He shook his fur out, though, and looked around. His muzzle was icy and colder than he normally liked it to be, and the shooting pain inside his nostrils made him eager for spring and warmer weather. The good news was that the winter was almost half done - at least, if it was as long as other seasons. Otherwise he didn't remember how long these months usually lasted. Last time, it had been achingly cold, but he and Maya had passed the time hunting, always moving. This winter, even though they had worked just that morning in bringing down two deer and a small wildcat, it wasn't nearly enough of a hunt to raise Baki's energy enough that his immune system would be at 100%. Which sucked, because if he got sick and Maya got sick, there wouldn't be anyone to hunt anything bigger than a rabbit. And it took a LOT of rabbits for Baki to be satisfied.

Maya sneezed again, and shook her head. The snow seemed to be accumulating on her hair much faster, or else time was going by slower than she thought. Her eyes watered slightly and she rubbed them, feeling her cheeks get rough from the rubbing. She shivered and growled, rubbing her palms against her forearms and trying to retain some heat. She took a few steps towards her tent, stubborn. She did want to beat the weather, but could she? Last winter her aunt had given her proper winter clothes, and she'd even worn boots...Maya's bare and very cold toes were testament to the fact that she depended heavily on her aunt for at least some of the basic things. Maybe Mai could help her...Maya hadn't thought about it, and her skins were almost ready to get all done up. Perhaps the woman would be kind enough to make her something warm to wear out of the lynx fur, and new pants at least from the two deerskins. Maya wasn't that big, so maybe she could convince Mai for a new shirt too. But she'd have to actually finish the furs first, and then she'd have to not get sick. Which wasn't looking good right now.

Baki sat on his butt and shook his mane out more, white flakes falling like dandruff and joining their icy cousins on the ground. Baki yawned, his throat dry and his tongue tasting funny. Gross...the massive lion was thoroughly unhappy with the way things were going, and pushed his tail from side to side against the ground, creating a small snow shape behind his rear end. Of course, Baki paid no attention whatsoever to this because it was useless to his life as it pertained to staying healthy...or was it? Baki's tail began to go numb around the edges, and he hesitated, standing and taking a step, like Maya, towards the warmth of the tent where Ruha slept and where Shuga had once lived. Maya would go there, it was bigger and there were more furs to sleep with. But he wouldn't go in first - he would wait for Maya to make her move.

Maya relented, another few steps. The tent was about ten feet away from where she stood, her teeth chattering and she tried to rub her arms harder. Maybe she should just not come out for the rest of winter! Bears hibernated, why couldn't she and Baki? Well...they did need to eat...but really other than that, there was no reason for this outside-ness. Maya snorted and pressed against Baki, finding little warmth in the outer edges of his mane. Those first few centimeters were icy and freezing! Wasn't Baki cold at all around his neck!? Maya let out a slight cry of dismay, and looked up at the clouds, snowflakes getting caught in her eyelashes. This weather sucked majorly, and she really hated it. Why did she even stay on the island? Wasn't there a place anywhere in the world where it didn't snow for the winter?? Maya whined to herself, feeling small and annoyed. If Ichi or Shuga saw her, they'd disapprove - and oh, if Shinichi saw her! Maya growled and shook her head, trying to get them out of her head.

Baki was trying to maintain his body heat, but when Maya pressed against his neck and flattened the cold hair to his body, he twitched and tried to stay still for the girl's sake, though they were both cold now. A little further to the tent...a little further and he could warm up. How could he possibly regain feeling of his paws staying out here in the cold? Maya was barefoot too! Baki snorted and let out his version of a whine, which was really just a high pitched growl attached to large, begging golden eyes. It was too cold to be sitting outside, standing outside, doing anything outside! Baki hated this weather twice as much as Maya did, though he did admit to himself that it made prey easier to see, especially deer and the sort. Their fur, too, stood out in the cold weather and the white snow, which made them easier to hunt. Maybe it wasn't all bad, this white chill, but it certainly wasn't on his top ten of favorite things that had to do with Shimagakure.

Maya made it to the entrance of the tent and dropped to her knees, shivering almost violently. Whoever invented the season of winter was an evil, evil person... Maya suddenly imagined Shinichi standing over a village of people from a tropical area and bringing snow down onto them as punishment for the most inconsequential of things...like bringing him a bowl of ramen instead of udon. Shinichi seemed like the type to do something like that, have a whole huge punishment for one little thing. She smiled despite the cold, and covered her mouth to hold back a small cough. This wasn't good at all, and maybe she should get into the tent soon. She was already here, she just had to crawl in under the flaps and move Ruha over (lazy cub...), and then snuggle in the many furs her aunt had. An idea began poking around in the back of her head, but she ignored it while she debated what she should do. Hmm...

Baki's bones were beginning to ache, and he felt like an old, old lion. He was only five, and barely that! Okay, fine, maybe closer to six, but who was counting, really? Baki snorted and shook himself, standing next to Maya and nudging her towards the tent. He hesitated when she fell to her knees, but kept pushing. He wanted in too! He sneezed, making sure to face away from the girl, and growled in agitation as his muzzle got all wet with runny liquid. Gross! And because he didn't know any better (and because he didn't think about it first), he wiped his nose against the white flurry powder. Sure, his nose was clean now, but it was also frozen, and Baki felt the tremors beginning in his muzzle. If his teeth started chattering like Maya's, it would probably hurt more since his teeth were sharp and not flat, like hers. Which was funny; she ate meat with the same vigor as he did, but with less useful teeth...why was he even thinking of that at a time like this!?

Maya felt her mind numb, and her vision dimmed. What was that idea..? No...had she had one...? Maya didn't know what to do with herself anymore, and pushed open the tent flap. Her head hummed at her in a steady rhythm, and she closed her eyes, not caring at all what the consequence would be. She hadn't even moved Ruha...where was she? And Baki....ow, but her head...the rest of her would probably hurt too if she could feel it...Maya curled up in the thick furs Shuga had thrown all over her tent, hoping the warmth would seep into her bones and remove the harsh winter chill - but why was her face so hot? Maya's fever would hopefully go down after some rest, but who knew? And with the lack of visitors to the ground, not to mention Maya's habit of being anti-social, it would probably be a while before anyone came by. With luck, Maya would just have a cold. With none, she'd be down for the count this winter; it was a good thing they had hunted already, for Maya dozed off now into a fitful sleep, her lips tinged slightly blue and her body curled up in the fetal position.

Baki had had enough, and with a small surge of strength he pushed Maya into the tent...after she had already gone in. He snorted, shaking out his fur wildly and feeling a small bit of blood course through his body. He had to keep moving, then? Eying Maya, he stepped into the tent and picked Ruha up by the nape of her neck, moving her further back into the tent and away from the entrance. Even so, Maya looked funny. She wasn't the color she normally was, and that wasn't good at all. Baki growled and shook his head. For him, his immune system was starting to slowly come to life. However, the lion was aware, slightly, that it was perhaps too little, too late. His nose was still cold, and his mane still laced with the icy traces of the wintry slush that was falling from the sky.

Inside the tent, though, Baki felt better. He rubbed his nose against one of his forelegs, seeing if the friction would warm it up. No, it didn't, but it made blood rush to his head, which was good. Keep blood moving, and maybe he wouldn't get sick. Baki snorted, feeling a tickle in his nose but ignoring it. It wasn't strong enough to warrant his attention. With a sigh, Baki looked towards the entrance again, and shoved his head outside to investigate. Someone had to come check Maya and make sure she was going to wake up again, and he had to go find that person. But what if he didn't? Baki didn't know where to look, since the clean-smelling lady wasn't around as much as she used to be, and Baki didn't want to go into the place of sickness by himself. He wasn't stupid, after all, to expose his already weak system to all sorts of viruses and nasty things like that...

...except he had gone and done exactly that. The tickle Baki had felt before escalated into a sneeze that caused his head to throb, and he quickly yanked himself out of the snow and back into the warmth of the tent. Too little, too late...he collapsed next to Maya, curled up as tightly as he could. He hadn't tried to sleep curled up in a ball since he was a cub, and it was hard to do it now, but instinct was all he had to run on, and it told him that being a big fluffy ball, albeit wet, was better than stretching out alongside a non furry human girl. However, since he was so big, Baki's back pressed against Maya anyway, providing at least that tiny bit of warmth. Now what?, mused the lion. They were both ill, and who would check on Maya if she got worse? It wasn't good at all, if he was honest with himself, and the winter would probably be a miserable time this year.

Maya's fevered sleep came with haunted dreams - which was odd, since lately Maya had slept without waking to the memory of dreams at all. Her nights had been blank, dark and quiet, and filled with no inconsequential things to think about upon awakening. But this was new - she dreamed tonight, and it was likely due to the fever. However, being asleep, Maya didn't know that...
'Maya, get out of there!' shrieked a voice, long pale arms that seemed unattached to a body. Maya shrank away, easily hiding in a small, cramped place. She was small, very small, and the hands were part of a memory long ago locked away and forgotten. The strange part was that they seemed familiar...why?
'Maya, quickly, come! We must leave!' The voice continued to scream and scream, and then abruptly it ended, followed by a lower voice that demanded to know what was taking so long. Who...what? Maya knew this place, she did, but where was it? Where was she? Where was Baki?

In his own fevered sleep, Baki's dreams were less hectic than Maya's. His system had begun to kick in, and his temperature and fever were much lower than Maya's. He, after all, had fur, so his dream was pleasant. His paws twitched slightly, and he felt Ruha curling up into a ball near his mane. Mm...the cub would have to leave the grounds soon, perhaps with a partner...Baki's mind wandered, and he thought of, what else?, the next big hunt.
Low to the ground, Baki couldn't help but drool at the sight before him - a fat deer-like creature with great flat antlers and long, almost awkward legs. It was slow, and it chewed with great thought, as if even the slightest movement would make the plains grass disappear. The sheer size of the thing made Baki lick his muzzle, and he felt the gurgle in his stomach telling him that one, this was definitely going to be dinner, and two, he was hungry enough to eat the whole thing. It would be hard, though - the beast's neck had a great flappy thing hanging from it. Weird.

'Maya, come out from there immediately. Something bad is happening,' the deeper voice said in a rushed voice, a new pair of hands approaching. These were man's hands, thick with muscle and callused from heavy use. Dirt smudged the flesh, and Maya looked down at her own hands. Tiny compared to this giant's, and spotless! Maya quivered, tears running down her face. Things around them began falling - were they under attack? Did the herds of animals get loose, and start running around? WERE there herds of animals!?!? Maya began to sob, covering her face with her hands and shaking her head, hoping to clear the thoughts of the shaking ground and shouts and screams from her head. What was this horrid place? Where was she? Who were these people who wanted her to leave her tiny, safe niche? Where was Baki!? Was he even here? Maya cried even harder - was she on Shimagakure? Was something bad happening to the rest of the village? No, it couldn't be - she didn't recognize the voices calling for her...

It would definitely be a challenge, and Baki didn't know too much about it. Oh well! He lunged, missing by more than literally twelve feet, and stood confused as the great deer-like beast turned its massive head towards Baki and blinked. It wasn't scared? How odd, most herbivores ran...what the hell!? Baki barely managed to turn tail as the big animal ran towards him, head lowered and great flat antlers coming directly at him! Hot diggity! Baki raced over the plains, aware that he wasn't tired or getting tired at all ... in fact, he felt great. Which was good, because the big thing was still after him, and Baki didn't know if he was going to get away from it. Maybe he should turn around and fight it head on? But those flat antlers were super scary, and Baki didn't know how to get around them. Deer antler were one thing, but he didn't know what this other beast was, or what the danger of facing it was. He'd keep running for now...

As a matter of fact, Maya realized this was definitely not Shimagakure. No one ever looked for her on the island; she was pretty much the hermit leader of the Tategami tribe. But this place had to be familiar somehow - there were tribal signs on the walls like Shuga had on her tent...well, it was Maya's tent now, but still. There were only a few of the same symbols, though, and the rest of them were unique to wherever she was. Was this were she had come from before? No, of course not, Maya didn't remember what her old home had looked like...or had she, through selective memory, simply chosen not to remember? Was that what had happened? No way! Maya knew what she knew! Her sobs grew quieter as she wiped her face; the noises outside had calmed down a little, and the hands no longer approached her in the darkness. She had no idea what to do, and had no idea whether she should leave her little hole or go out and find out.

Baki slowed to a trot, looking behind him. The beast slowed only a little bit, though it had lifted its head and was now simply following him. How strange...Baki stopped, turning to face the flat-antlered thing. It, too, stopped, blinking and tilting its head as if to ask why the lion had stopped. Baki, confused of course, sat on his haunches and growled at the thing...
But no sound came out! Instead, a rich, flowery phrase escaped his muzzle. 'What the hell are you?' Baki, shocked, clamped his jaw shut. He sounded like the humans around the village! Instead of communicating in growls and lion-sounds, he sounded like them! How odd! And even stranger, the beast replied!! 'Well, it's obvious I'm your packmate,' it replied, rolling its eyes as if Baki were some sort of idiot.

Sniffling, Maya left her little cubbyhole...and saw a great plain of gold. She whirled around - two figures stood in the distance behind her, one in front of her. They were all tiny from where she stood, and she couldn't decide where to go.
'Maya...' the two called, and she immediately perked up. The voices? She would go the other way then! She turned, and noticed her hands...covered and stained with red. She had eaten something red? Berries, maybe...and then she looked further. Bodies littered the ground, torn and ripped in a way only a wild animal would do it. She glanced up again, the sole figure glaring in her direction. Golden eyes glowed, making the black silhouette easy to see. Darkness fell - the choice would have to be made in the dark. Golden eyes....meant Baki! Maya lurched forward, screaming for her best friend as she raced towards the silhouette. But something was wrong...something was definitely, definitely wrong. This was not Baki - this was a human figure! Maya slowed, stopping a hundred feet or so from the silhouette.

'Packmate? Nonsense, lions travel in prides...and you aren't even a lion!' Baki snorted, blinking and then opening his mouth to scold the beast...and finding himself without words. In front of him sat Jhuga, who he hadn't seen in what seemed like ages. 'Jhuga! Where have you been?' The older lion shook his head, amused. Jhuga's mane had thinned out, and he was scrawny compared to Baki...but still able enough to take on any given prey. 'Baki, you great idiot. Where is your pride? You have let it become weak.' Jhuga was referencing Maya, Baki thought, but then realized that Maya was the only pride member he even considered pride. What of Ruha? Kore? They were Tategami too...even that new annoying brat...Baki would have to teach him a thing or two...But where were they..? Jhuga scowled, and stood, ears pinned backwards. 'You great idiot...look at you!' Baki snarled, and stood as well, opening his jaw to say something, but blinking and catching himself. His jaw dropped. Before him stood none other than...
