"Here ya go! Fresh outta th' oven!"
"Thanks," Matthias told the man with a smile, accepting the piece of pizza on a cheap paper plate. He rummaged in his pocket with his free hand. "$5.06, wasn't it?"
The man chuckled. "You've got a sharp eye; I didn't even ring it up yet!"
Matthias laughed as well, but it was empty of emotion. He paid and left quickly, avoiding the man's eyes.
The truth was that he kept careful track of how much he needed to pay because it made him feel different from Shadow. Better, somehow. He knew that the money he paid with was probably stolen, but it made him happy all the same to know that at least these people weren't being cheated out of what was rightfully theirs.
Matthias bit into the slice of pizza and felt hot juices run down his chin. He sighed in contentment. Those guru guys had it all wrong. Happiness was a slice of hot, cheesy, greasy New York pizza.
"Yo, Shadow!"
Matthias choked on his bite of pizza and had to spit it out. Coughing, eyes watering, he turned to see two distinctly shady-looking guys heading towards him.
"Hey," said the first one, catching up to him. He had a scar over one eye, making it slope upward in an almost demonic way. He also had several piercings in various places - ears, nose, eyebrow, lip. Matthias thought it odd that someone with such a bad scar wouldn't mind having lots more sharp metal things near his face.
Piercings lifted his eyebrows suggestively. "Heard you got some serious tail last night," he said to Matthias. "Old 'Ice Queen' Hotchkiss? Damn, how the hell'd ya get that one?"
"Er-" Matthias shot a glance at the other guy. He was tall and dark, heavily muscled, tattoos covering every available inch of skin. He stared at Matthias without expression.
Shadow, I think some of your friends are here, Matthias hissed desperately.
No reply. Either Shadow was too far gone to hear him, or the man wanted to watch Matthias squirm.
Shadow! he hissed again. The two were still waiting expectantly for an answer. Matthias grimaced mentally. There was no help for it: he was going to have to pretend to be Shadow.
"You kidding? By the time I finished with her, she was begging for more," Matthias said, adopting the other man's tone of casual cruelty. He laughed. "b***h didn't stand a chance."
Piercings laughed too, a little too loudly, and Matthias realized with a jolt of relief that this guy didn't actually know Shadow too well; he was trying to get into Shadow's favor. Tattoos didn't laugh, but then again, the guy looked like he wouldn't know the word "funny" if it was written across his face.
Which it might be, Matthias thought, eyeing the man's markings. He could have a whole book written there, you never know...
"Ah, man, you kill me, Shadow," said Piercings, wiping his eyes and straightening up. He glanced around and lowered his voice. "Hey, me an' Marc here are goin' to the Hot n' Pink club later. Just got a new shipment of crystal meth. You in?"
Matthias' stomach lurched. He had no idea whether Shadow would accept the invitation or not, but he didn't want to lose what little control he still had over his mind.
"No, thanks," Matthias said, waving the invitation away, his gut clenching. "I didn't get enough of a workout with Hotchkiss last night - think I'll pick up some more." He left the sentence hanging and hoped that would be enough of an explanation.
Luckily, Piercings backed off. "Gotcha, man, gotcha," he said, laughing. "Let's go, Marc." He glanced back at Matthias as they were moving off and winked. "Teach them hoes who's boss, huh?"
Matthias waved back in acknowledgement. As soon as the two were safely out of sight, he dashed around the corner and down two blocks until he burst out into the brightly lit Times Square.
Once he was sure they couldn't find him again, Matthias slid into an unoccupied nook in front of a closed store. He gritted his teeth and pounded his head against the wall in frustration. Dammit! He was sick of living with Shadow! Of waking up with needles and used $100 bills in his pockets, of being mistaken for a murderer, of Shadow using his body for sex with people he didn't even know! He probably had a dozen STDs by now, not to mention a criminal record!
All the pounding was doing nothing for his growing headache, and Matthias finally slumped down to sit on the doorstep of the abandoned store. He put his head in his hands and moaned. All this was for nothing. He'd wake up and he'd still be somewhere that Shadow had fallen asleep, responsible for whatever he'd done. He couldn't wrest control from Shadow. He'd tried. This torture was going to go on forever, with no hope of escape.
Matthias suddenly jerked his head up. No. Dammit, this was his body, and he'd be worse than a coward if he let it go without a fight. It was time he got serious.
Matthias got up and put his hands in his jacket pockets. Checking the crowd for any other 'friends' of Shadow's, he joined the rush of people, keeping his head down. He'd find a place to sleep and hide supplies somewhere he could get to easily for tomorrow. Then - he carefully masked his thoughts from Shadow - he'd go to the New York Public Library.
If he could find information on spirit possession and how to get rid of it anywhere, it was there.

((Yeah... I fail at club names. sweatdrop Eh, just figured I'd get my characters going somewhere to sleep. The next post I do will be in the 'morning', so I'll be silent until everyone else catches up.))

Laila stared after the girl that really did seem to be following her all that day. Hell's Fury? Did that mean the girl knew about the bargain she had once made, and if so who was this girl? Clearly not like her, yet the good should have no clue as to what was going on. Was she someone who tried to alter what was to come? What was the word? Laila couldn't remember.

But it had achieved it's job, she realised she didn't have time to fight this man. She gave him one last glare and hurried on her way. Pushing through crowds of people, she decided there was only one remaining option.
"Zara! Zara!" She yelled through the crowds, praying she her voice would get through the crowds.

Zara blinked and stopped at the faint sound of her name, which was an enormous mistake. She was immediately surrounded by disorienting flashes from the countless futures of the sea of people rushing around her. She couldn't even make out any real images; she was just caught in a veritable barrage of colors and shapes. Too afraid to try moving when she was effectively blind, she stood stock still, instead just trying to stay upright in spite of the constant bumps and pushes.

Laila pushed her way through the sea of people, seething at ever single person there. It was doubtful that anything they were doing were as important as what she was trying to do. She couldn't even see her sister anymore, but was still pushed through the crowds. It was impossible. She would never find her now, never. She was tempted to just give in and leave, but turning round would have made life difficult.

Then she all but walked into the person she was trying to find. She grabbed Zara's sleeve so as not to lose her again.

Zara froze as someone grabbed onto her sleeve, not as much out of instinctive panic at being touched when she couldn't see who was touching her, though there was that. It was the voice drifting across her mind, a vaguely familiar girl's voice. No images accompanied it; there were still too many people rushing by her for any sort of coherency. "So," said the voice, sweet as morning light, but with a barely detectable undercurrent that made Zara shiver. "Do we have a deal?" There was an extremely pregnant pause, and then someone else replied, a frighteningly familiar boy's voice. "Yes," said Aaron.

Even blinded by the futures of those around her, it was all Zara could do to keep from bolting. "Hello?" she said. Her voice sounded small and shaky to her own ears. Who was holding onto her arm? Some sort of demon? She knew that was ridiculous, there had to be some other explanation, but her pounding heart wasn't listening to her head.

Aaron raised an eyebrow as the girl ran off again, then turned back to the other two. He almost mentioned something about the fact that she was the reason he'd fallen behind in the first place, or maybe something about Meg's disturbing personality change, but quickly decided against both; he was in a much better mood, but still wanted to get out of the increasingly creepy park. "So, where exactly is your place, Chase?"

Chase pointed out of the park. "Due East!" Though, he was most definently pointing west. He snickered. "Away from any signs of bipolar girlscouts!" He grabbed Madison and Aaron and began marching toward his apartment. Looking over at Aaron, the brunette smiled. "You do need to tell us about that by the way. It sounds intresting." He smiled, anything but serious.

Aaron shrugged. "Bizarre is the word for it," he replied, "Meg was verbally attacking that girl for drawing a picture." He wanted to say something about the quiet but profound viciousness in her words, but couldn't decide exactly how to convey this without seeming alarmist, so he left it at that.

((Ooc: Ahh, Laila/Meg is such a freak. Bipolar Girlscout is probably the right word (She has two names...). XD It can't be helped it's just the way she is.))

At the very same time that Zara was seeing the future, Laila had glimpsed the past. A time when Zara had first caught a glimpse of the future, and a long with it, a very brief glimpse of a thousand single moments in Zara's life. And then, one where Zara's sister had once vanished into thin air.

"Hello?" Zara said, her shaky and frightened voice scaring Laila more than anything else that day. Even more than the people in the woods and the girl who was everywhere with her drawing pad. Laila, for a second, didn't know what to day.
"Zara?" Laila finally replied in the same shaky tone.

"Oh, it was Meg. She seemed a bit off to me." Chase knew the girl was trouble, but left it at that, not wanting to be rude to the girl. The rest of the walk to Chases home was quiet, nothing to really talk about. As the trio got out of the woodsy area it was less creepy and you could tell you really were in New York. People were walking and talking to friends, lights were flashing and taxi's slowly drove by.
Chase smiled as they neared his apartment. It was a small three story brick complex, the lights outside were dim and the ones outback flickered with a small clicking noise. It would have been creepy if people didn't lightly litter the outside of the building, going out for some late night activity. Chase opened the door for Madison and Aaron. "I live on the third floor. I'll get you two something to eat and stuff once we're up there." Leading them up a couple flights of stairs, after a turn through the hallway Chase unlocked his door and let his new friends in.
