The first FMA isn't like the manga at all, which is probably why I didn't particularly care about it. I would even go so far as to say there is no FMA anime; until Brotherhood came out. Now there's an FMA anime. Anybody see the new FMA yet? I think my most favorite character there(next to Hughes) is General Armstrong.

o_O You do know that the manga came first right?
Also, the beginning of Brotherhood will be almost exactly the same up until Hughes' death. Then everything is different.
