I love French Horn. I'm the only French Horn player in my school band... sad But I don't mind, the French Horn ROCKS!!!! But people are always like, "What's that thing?!" or "It's so wierd looking" it's those types of things that make me a bit mad...but oh well. The French Horn is the winner of all instruments!
One of the funnest things...pulling out the mouthepiece and just blowing into that, it makes such a funny sound! XD
But yeah...being the ONLY French Horn player in the band...not too fun. But I really don't mind, cause I get to blow people away with the AWESOMNESS of the French Horn!!! ^_^ But I do usually get stuck playing the same part that the Saxophones play...but there are a lot of them...so that's good. I'll always hear my part that way!!!

I'm not even completely sure what a mellophone is. I've only been playing french horn for a few weeks because both our french horn players graduated last year. I used to be on trumpet (and still kinda am because my teacher insists that I have talent) but playing the french horn is so much more fun! First concert of the year is this Tuesday! Wish me luck!

Actually No, I love Mellophone! All the Fingerings Are Basically The Same Except I Know the fingering for E(the one after middle C) Changes from 0 to 1 & 2 pressed. You Use the Same Mouthpiece, and may need to buy an Adapter(my mouthpiece got stuck in my adapter tonight DX)..
The Mellophone isn't really that hard, excpet you play it with your right hand like a trumpet.

Umm..We have a couple of guy Horn Players at my school...I know our Drum Major this year is a guy F. Horn Player..

Omg! I love french horn! It was my first instrument. I love the mouthpiece. It is so small, I can just fit it in my pocket whenever I need a good buzz. =D It has also saved my life quite a few times. Silly me always forgets to bring my inhaler everywhere. I lso gave someone a slight concussion with it. Hehehehe.
I am one of 4 mellophones at my school. 2 are Trumpets who had to switch to mello for marching season and George and I play French Horn. We have one mello for each grade. I am the only girl.

here is my story;
I play a total of 7 instruments and for my birthday last week my mom bought me a bass clarinet, but with the bass she also bought me a mellophone so I am now having to learn to play it. woot 8 instruments now. One of my best friends play mellophone so she is going to teach me how to play it. So for marching band I am probably going to play the mellophone instead of playing the bass clarinet or spinning guard.. heart heart heart

Oh god you have to play mellophone I am so sorry. Its not a hard transition or anything, the fingerings are just annoying, but I still hate it. Its impossible to tune and its like the anti horn.

niiiice on being the only girl! Our horn section is sexist our 1st and third chairs are guys and 2nd and 4th are girls. I'm last lol but I don't feel too bad cause its top band (that goes to superstate and always places really high) in our school and I'm the youngest in our section, plus my low range is the most in-tune out of the 4 of us.

Haha. Usually, I've seen girls play it. I've seen 7 guy horn players compared to the 12 female horn players. And that's just counting the bands I've played in.
I finally got a guy in my section this year. And they kinda forced him into the horn since I was the only one in my section, for the 6th year in a row.
Horn is definitely the unisex instrument. haha.
Transition is hard if you have to switch mouthpieces. I hate it. Stupid trumpet players WOULD say that it sounds better with a mellophone mouthpiece and not the horn. ugh. The fingerings are the exact same of the lower register on the horn. So if you've got that down, then you're alright. And if not, they're pretty much the same. And it helps you with lower register anyways. haha.

nah. especially if you play trumpet too ^^'
it has the same fingerings as trumpet and the F side of the horn(if you're playing a double) or just as a regular F horn for most of the notes, if you forget a fingering, or it doesn't sound right, ask the trumpets. the mouthpiece switch is a little wierd, but i guess you can get adapters for that sort of thing...

... i think... in ALL the bands i've played in and we've had regular french horns... it's been... about even... a few more guys than girls, but still about even...

i would rather march with a horn if my BD would let me...but meh, it's balanced differantly than the horn, that's deffinatly something you have to get used to... and you play it with your right hand...

...i'm going to do percussion next year...
