Except Avant-Garde Metal can't exist, it would just make no sense.

Oh, I grasp that. Avant-garde, at least as I understand it, is a separate genre of music entirely. My musing was about the point at which something ceases to be progressive something and becomes avant-garde.

Well, now I'm the one that's confused. My understanding is that there's no such separate genre as "progressive." Progressive is simply a modifier that can be applied to established genres of music to denote a forward-looking, inclusive approach to that genre. A progressive group makes a point of including influences from other genres, but is still definitely rooted in a particular type of music. Avant-garde, by contrast, is such a soup of different influences that it is no longer possible to define as being a subgenre, and morphs into its own genre.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm certain you listen to more avant-garde than I do.

No you are right, but what I was saying is that Avant-Garde is a form of Progression in music, just not a specific type of music if you get what I'm saying.

Oh, well, I can understand what you're saying if you put it that way. "Avant-garde" literally translates to "vanguard", so the experimental nature is innately progressive, yes.
