I guess you could also think of it as playing an ascending major scale for a measure, then a descending dorian mode starting on the second of the previous major scale.

Hello
My name is Helen
I'm from Philadelphia, PA
I have been playing clarinet for 4 years... started my freshman year of high school!
I was 2nd chair at my school.
I'm in marching band, concert band, pit band (school plays), and a new thing called RAM.

Its nice to meet all of you wonderful clarinet people.. hehehe..
OMG! someone that is NOT from California and also from the same state as me! Too bad that you live in the "City of Brotherhood." more like the city of druggiehood but I'm still glad that you're here.

1. sweatdrop yup three hours ^_^ five days a week actually

2. i've come ot the conclusion that my conductor favorites kimberly and thats why she's first chair...

3. she couldn't even play her scales right, i had to teach her them ON THE AUDITION DAY and she got first chair!

1. close enough. you still practice a heck of a lot more than me.

2. that sucks. And this is why I'm glad that we don't have assigned chairs, although pretty much everybody knows who the best and worst players are.

3. Sometimes it's just better to worry about yourself, rather than other people. That was nice of you, but be more self-centered next time.

What's wrong with your tone?

If you've got tone issues, it may be your ligature. You should always use a hard rubber ligature. Wooden instruments also have a MUCH better sound than plastic ones. Also, your tone will come with practice. Which you obviously do enough of. (I haven't practiced my clarinet since the middle of May...... sweatdrop )

If it's tone issues, then equipment isn't the answer as long as everything is in working order. That's something that can only be resolved through practice.

Changing your tone through equipment is mostly a measure of preference. The best set up in the world won't improve your sound if your tone is fundamentally weak.

Very true. I have a friend who has a top notch ligature, top notch mouth piece, and a decent Buffet clarinet (not an R13, though). She still has a cruddy sound, just because she can't support it. Breath support, and embouchure are the most important parts of a good sound.

Right. If you get a professional player with impeccable tone, and give him a student set up, he should still sound fine and generally like he normally does.

Most people confuze timbre for tone. Sometimes a sax with a metal mouthpiece or a clarinet with a binding ligature may produce a sound that is displeasing, but its not always the player's fault.

biggrin I went to ABI Saturday and got the Copland clarinet concerto, Webber's 1st Concerto, and I ordered the Baermman book 4.... which they haven't carried in 12 years, lol. I also got a couple screws re notched so I can finish working on rebuilding my cheap clarinet.

ALSO!! I just found out that my parents are buying not only the Ottolink tenor mouthpiece I wanted for graduation, but they're getting me an A clarinet (R-13 of course biggrin ) from my teacher!!! YAY!! And, I have recollected all 3 of the saxes I was lending out to my friends. smile Btw, I love the COpland clarinet concerto <3 Listen to the benny goodman or sharon kam versions, lol.

it has nothing to do with my ligature or mouth piece, its my embouchure--its improving though blaugh I don't think i have a weak sound--its not loud and booming, just right---o.0 i think....

its because i'm tightening my lips not my side muscles Dx....i'm fixing it though...its sorta hard o.o;;

don't go giving me five paragraphs ::cough chocovash cough:: biggrin

KEWLLL! an A clarinet >w

If it's not projecting, it might not be your embouchure. Try playing as loud as you possibly can, without your intonation going awry or your tone spreading.

See how nice a tone you can produce that way, then work on keeping that tone at a lower volume.
