"Oh! Do you men the starter? It's sort of liquidy and gets bigger and bigger... in a jar, maybe? Or a bowl?" He popped the trunk and began to pile their groceries inside. This took as much figuring as bagging, but if something went a place it shouldn't it was easy enough to move.
"I don't know. He's done it before. If you ask him to I'm sure he would."

"Yeah, that," Maia rewarded Toby with a smile, he'd known what she was talking about. "She used to do that. She was a brilliant baker." Maia mused. She would have liked to become as good as she'd been, but Toby was just as talented. She helped put things into the trunk.
"Really? I'll ask him."

When they got back home, Dari was sitting on the couch playing a video game at extremely low volume. It wasn't to be polite, but simply because his equivalent sense of hearing was not reliant upon volume. He greeted them happily, grinning, and even joined them while cooking. He escaped while the meatballs were baking simply because of how much space was required to bake. He did, however, promise to prepare the pans.
The batter came first, of course, and Toby couldn't help but fool around just a little. Maia made him feel younger and he'd be lying if he said he didn't enjoy it. He'd created a great puff of flour and cocoa powder at first just for comedic effect as it burst up from the stand mixer. He was helping Maia with various measuring devices and taught her to crack eggs over a separate bowl, always over a separate bowl, even when it was just him. Measurements were more important in baking than in cooking, he told her, and indeed they were being much more precise than that had been with the meatballs.
The frosting he had chosen was a Swiss meringue buttercream rather than the usual, and he dipped a spoon into the mix, dodging the beaters with a little 'oop!' He offered it out to Maia but still held it.
"Try it."

Baking with Toby was different than anything Maia had experienced so far. He seemed happiet, more playful. He certainly had the selkie giggling when the poof of powder came. She noted that measurements seemed far more important with baking than with regular cooking. The noodles they'd made seemed more like guess how much of something was needed. This was more precise.
Maia leaned in to lick the spoon. She was sure the frosting would be delicious--everything they'd made together had been.

Even better than goofing around was someone who was obviously amused by it. That was the goal, wasn't it? It only served to feed Toby's ego, which Dari had noticed while he sat at the dining table popping paper cups into muffin tins.
Rather than actually let Maia taste, Toby lifted the spoon to nudge some frosting onto her nose. His smile broadened.

"Hey," Maia protested, trying, and failing to get the frosting off of her nose with her tongue. She stopped and grinned at him, wiping It off with a finger and smearing it on his cheek. "There. It looks better on you."

Toby grimaced and his nose wrinkled up. Ah, a good move. He swiped it off of his own cheek and stuck the pad of his finger in his mouth, giving her a bit of a glare. With the frosting gone he now offered Maia the spoon properly.
"No, really. Try it."

Toby seemed upset, but his glare was met only with a grin. Maia took the spoon and licked it, eyes widening at the taste. After a moment, She set the spoon down. "Its good!" She announced. Everyone would love them. She gave Toby a hug. "We'll make the best cupcakes ever!"

Toby laughed and accepted the hug. Both of them became slightly more powdery with the gesture.
"I'm glad you think so!" The look on her face had been rather cute, and her exuberance at making cupcakes was undeniable. It as just cupcakes, but it was wonderful for her. He liked that mindset. Hopefully it would last her.
"We'll get to taste-test." He gave her a look that implied that was maybe the best part.

"Hm. If we decide they're not good enough we get to keep them," Maia teased him. "Or if they're too good to share." Baking was wonderful, could they do this more often? Maybe once a week?
She decided to ask him. "Can we do this next week, too?"

"Oh, no. We're not keeping forty cupcakes. That was your master plan this whole time, wasn't it?" He turned back to get the frosting out of the mixer. Should they make another batch? It was a pretty quick whip, they might not need to...
"Hm?" It took a moment, but her words eventually registered. "Oh. Sure. Maybe not forty cupcakes, but we can make something." He enjoyed baking, but didn't do it nearly enough when he was the only person around to eat it.

"Maaaaybe," Maia smirked up at him. "No, I think these will make Research's day. The frosting is wonderful on its own!" She beamed at him. "Maybe cookies? We could pass those out to a different department. "Good cookies! Hm... Not the shaped ones, those show up around my birthday. Maybe peanut butter? ...No, someone might be allergic to peanuts. Chocolate chip?"

Again Maia's words were a decent stroke to the ego. Some people gave you s**t when they learned you bake. Selkies apparently enjoyed it.
"Sure. We have all week to decide." Research was a fairly large department, all things considered. It wasn't like you could hire just anyone to work with the paranormal. "What do you have against 'shaped' cookies, anyway?" he was teasing again.

"It isn't the right season for shaped ones," Maia said. "And they need to be covered in frosting to taste good. Without it they're so plain." Maia wrinkled her nose. She clearly wasn't a fan of old-fashioned Christmas cookies. "But maybe we could find a fish cookie cutter for Seamus?"

"Well then you've been eating them wrong," Toby teased. Sugar cookies didn't have to be tasteless, although maybe they were a bit boring to the uninitiated. "I'm sure there are cookie cutters online that we could buy, but chocolate chip cookies are usual drop-cookies. You scoop out a spoonful and put the glob on the pan rather than rolling out dough and cutting it."
Personally he didn't think Seamus would give a damn what shape his cookies were in if the rules were being broken to give him cookies in the first place.
