I should have ended it a few days before my computer broke, but I forgot. So, I'll do it when I get home from work later.

Thrash round over, final tally was: Whiplash: 4 Sadus: 1 The Haunted: 1 Now excepting Progressive Metal noms. I nominate Strommoussheld because they are really awesome, and everyone should love them.

Will Echoes of Eternity be good? I'm not sure if this is gothic or progressive... Metal Archives suggest both...
EDIT: and yes, I realize EOE have a thread in Gothic subforum.

I don't know, I just listened to six songs, I didn't really hear too much Prog their music, its pretty much a pure Gothic Metal band with a wee bit of Prog.

Digital Malevolence what, you don't know any other good Prog Metal bands? Me? No.... gonk I don't even understand what exactly prog means (but that's not surprising since my music education is that of a kindergarten kid). Ash: your suggested band stands as nomination.

No.... gonk I don't even understand what exactly prog means (but that's not surprising since my music education is that of a kindergarten kid). Ash: your suggested band stands as nomination. Progressive Metal is pretty much supposed to be experimental bands and such, as in doing things differently and progressing in the Metal music genre instead of just doing the same old Death, Black, Power, etc types of music as so many other bands do. But somewhere down the line, it turned mostly into a bunch of Dream Theater and Fates Warning clones. ^Maybe not the best explaination but its the best I can do.

I'd say Digi did a pretty good job of explaining it. As he said, the idea of "progressive" music in general is to incorporate new ideas into the basic template of that style, most frequently by using songwriting techniques and instruments from a disparate genre. With prog rock and metal, that usually takes the form of song structures and composition borrowed from jazz and classical music.
Traditionally, prog metal is, as Digi said, typecast as over-the-top, self-indulgent Dream Theater worship. In reality, though, it's possible for any sort of music to be progressive, and this applies to the various subgenres of metal as well. While the typical "prog metal" band is rooted in some type of power or heavy metal, any subgenre can spawn progressive subspecies - prog death like Cynic or prog thrash like Coroner, for instance. Where things start to get murky is the distinction between progressive and avant-garde.
