Toby wasn't going to let her pay? Again? She shoved the twenty back into her wallet, shutting it and placing it back in her bag.
The ice cream aisle was slightly less overwhelming, if only because Maia couldn't read the flavors on each box. Hm. "Toby, you pick," She instructed. She'd picked what they were having for dinner, it was his turn.

"Nonono, you can do it," Toby urged. "What do you feel like? Creamy or icy?"
"Chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry?"
"Caramel, candy, chocolate, or cookie?"
"Bar, cone or tub?"

"Creamy," Maia said. She couldn't imagine icy ice cream, it'd be hard and weird. "Hm, vanilla?" She considered. "Maybe with a topping? Oooh! We can put bananas in it, too! I picked out bananas. But what sauce would go good?"
Maia considered his last question. "Tub. That way we can do whatever we like with it."

"Usually banana splits have vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream, and then marshmallow, chocolate and pineapple or strawberry, but we can make it simpler. What's your favorite flavor combo? They actually make chocolate-vanilla-strawberry boxes so you can pick, if you'd like. So what do you think?"
The ice cream toppings were in another aisle but he could easily run off to grab one.

Maia hesitated. She didn't know the answer to Toby's question. She shrugged. "I don't know," She confessed. "How about you pick?" She suggested. "You know more about ice cream flavors than I do."

"Maybe," Toby replied with a shrug. He'd certainly been around longer, but there was no way of knowing how much ice cream Maia had had in the past. "I'll be right back. See if you can find a carton of Neapolitan?" With that he left her in search of caramel, not a very common banana split topping but rather tasty with banana. He compared brands briefly and then headed back to the ice cream aisle to find Maia and make their way out.

Maia picked up a box of three flavors and waited for Toby's return. This was what he'd meant, wasn't it? When he came back she offered it to him. "Let's go," she said. "I'll call Dari and let him know we're on our way back." She took out her phone and looked for the picture of Dari. She tapped it and hit the green phone button. She put the phone to her ear and waited for It to finish ringing.
"Dari! We're buying our stuff, we'll be home soon!"

Toby took the ice cream, smiled and rolled his eyes. She really was concerned about Dari, it seemed. There wasn't a very good reason for it aside from being new to the situation. If Dari didn't want to come, he amused himself otherwise. He headed for the self-checkout feeling a bit shifty because of their bag of entirely different apples.
The phone rang a few times before Dari picked up. Uh-oh. Had something bad happened? Was Maia lost?
"Oh, alright. I'll see you soon." So why in the world was she calling?

Maia had missed the alien's company: but she'd remembered promising Dari to call him. "Next time, we're going somewhere we can all go," She promised. "Bye!" She hung up and went to watch Toby with the self check out.
"He missed us," she informed Toby.

"Oh, alri--" Dari began, but she was gone. Huh. She was quite the caller, wasn't she?
Meanwhile Toby had scanned a few things before weighing their apples.
"Type? Uh. I saw a Gala in there..." he counted them then and entered the number. "There." They'd either spent slightly more or paid slightly less. He didn't really care which.
"Hm? Oh. He did, did he?" the werewolf laughed. Somehow he felt like Maia had put those words in his mouth. He hadn't been listening to the conversation, though.
"Would you like to go bag? Just use your judgement. Nothing crushable under other things. You can take the cart."

"He did. He's looking forward to seeing us," Maia said. Oh, Hm. Bagging. She'd never done that before. She went to the bagging station next to the self check out. "So no bananas with something heavy," She said, as she bagged the bananas with the apples when Toby finished.
She waited for more things to bag. "I'm excited to make the cupcakes," she said. "Dari said he'd eat one."

"Right," Toby nodded. He was more worried about the eggs and the bread than the bananas but Maia seemed to have the right idea. She may be childlike at times but she clearly knew how to reason things out.
He continued scanning, sending things down the belt toward Maia, generally in an order that was reasonable to bag.
"It'll probably take most of the day," he said, half warning. He didn't know her patience yet. Cooking and baking were two very different animals. "At least a few hours." Especially if they were going to make meatballs too.

Maia carefully put the eggs in a bag, and then the bread over them. Soon They were finished and she smiled at Toby. "That's fine," she said. "My mother made this bread that took at least a week to make. You kept having to feed It. It was worth it, though."
"We can do it. It'll be fun!"

What? Week-long bread? Was that just the starter or the bread itself? If the latter, he had no idea what it was.
"Huh. I've never actually heard of that," Toby admitted as he slid his card and paid. It was a bit more than usual, but he'd had an extra mouth to feed this time.
"Sure, if you can find me a recipe I'm sure we can do it." He helped her load their bags into the cart and headed out for the car. He was lucky to have a pretty sizable trunk to load in all in. In no time they were on the way home.

"Friendship bread?" Maia asked. She lifted an eyebrow. Huh. "I'll find one," she promised. She followed him out to the car. "Do you think Dari will want to cook with us?" she asked.
