The fae had finally set out to find Patrick, and quickly cloaked himself as he saw Patrick on the doorstep of his rival's house. He moved closer, still invisible, and nearly sank to the ground sobbing with what he found.

It was doubtless. And even where it wasn't, the fae was tired of making excuses. It was high time he did the test- he'd question him later. He ran to Keegan and told him.

Soon enough, Keegan was dragging Patrick along with no explanations through the forest.

Patrick followed Keegan, wincing as his head started up the pain again, lips throbbing and arms getting slashed by branches. The dragon wasn't being gentle, and the human didn't understand it. The only thoughts he had were that either Keegan was mad at him, which he didn't understand since no-one other than Gabriella had seen Adrian kissing him - or Taranieth was hurt.

The combined worries of the day made him tired again, even as his heart raced. "Keegan! Is he alright? Where are you taking me - how was he hurt? Ugggh, my head! But how bad is he? Can I see him - I don't know how to look after a Faery, can only just help my sister...uugghh. Owww, I think I'm going to be sick...!"

He retched, but wasn't sick. As he lifted his head a twig scratched his cheek, drawing a thin line of blood. "Not my day... is he alright?"
If Patrick hadn't been so worried, he would have forced Keegan to a stop to ask properly what was wrong.

Keegan led him along to the cave mouth and nodded him in.

The power of the cave was to throw illusions at you. Taranieth, safely at the other end, watched. When Patrick reached the center, he'd have to brave his own illusions- but he wasn't too worried. He was an illusionist himself- he'd gotten good at smelling out what was real.

Patrick- well, Patrick would have every sight he feared, wanted, or abominated most, standing between him and Taranieth. Keegan handed him a note.

"I'm at the end, love. From now until you touch me, and know it is truly me, believe nothing.
-your Taran."

He'd been bending the limits on that one, but Patrick was human. He justified a little leeway.

"Keegan... where is this?" Patrick stumbled into the cave, then spent several seconds staring at the note in his hand.
"You do realise that this isn't helpful? I'm supposed to believe the note and break the first rule it gives me by believing it? Owww..."

Hissing his breath in, the human closed his eyes for a moment. When he reopened them he saw a very jumbled mix of images. First and foremost, within reach, was a bed. Just beyond that was his sister's crib - without Emma inside of it.
Patrick frowned, moving forward too quickly and stumbling over various rocks. He didn't pay attention though, focused on that empty crib and continually searching. "Emma? If you're hiding, come to me so I can go to sleep - this... my head hurts. Sissy? Emma?"

He glanced back and froze as his mother stood beside the crib with a bundle in her arms. Her face was unclear, yet her words rang out perfectly.
"I told you, Patrick: she's sick. We can't help her. Can't look after her without you here... don't have money for doctor's fees.
Emma died while you were away, being happy,"
, the word was spat at him, making his whole body quake, "with your fancy man.
You. Were. Happy. Whilst. Your. Baby. Sister. DIED!"

Screaming, he didn't know what he was doing as he fell to the cave floor. Except the floor was now grass, surrounded by trees. Nearby sat a grave marker. It was crude. Rough. Unworthy.
"I can do better..." he whispered, carving swiftly to get rid of the sick feeling in his stomach. The next thing to be heard was a thud: the knife had slipped, leaving his hand on the floor as blood covered the grass and tree trunks.

"I... my hand doesn't even hurt." His heart, his other hand: those were what hurt. His heart because a part of his soul, the ability to carve, was gone. His other hand appeared to know it's pair was gone forever.

In reality, Patrick had only gone forward a few steps. Now it would seem he wouldn't move forward for a while as he was curled up in a ball, cradling two large stones. One represented Emma, the other his hand. He couldn't hear it, but he was sobbing extremely loudly.

Taranieth leaped out. He had to get him. Whether he loved him didn't matter, just so long as he was safe, just so long as he didn't keep crying...

He had no clue what Patrick was crying about, but he didn't care. As he ran in a flash of his mother's disapproval washed over him. But he didn't care. His baby was hurt. He took the next step, but he couldn't. He tripped over his robe- what? The illusions couldn't physically hold him back.

He yelled, turning, and Keegan sat on him, glaring, and they struggled.

After a few moments, Patrick's crying stopped abruptly. "That makes no sense... my mother and family think Taranieth's a woman called Siofra. She wouldn't be able to accuse me of forgetting Emma because of a 'fancy man'."

He couldn't stand up, because his legs refused to hold him. Instead he started to crawl forward as he continued to mumble his way through the untruths of the illusions.
"I'm in a cave, so there's no grass. I'd be using a stump to crawl if my hand was gone - if Emma was dead, Taran wouldn't leave me alone. Unless he was dead, too - no, don't show me that. I know he's alive he wrote me a note..."

With his mind occupied, he ignored the attempts the cave threw at him, unconsciously crawling a lot faster than he'd walked. When he was almost halfway through the cave, he stopped to catch his breath again.
One glance upwards showed him something that stopped his breath: a pink bedroom, large enough for the two cribs inside of it. He managed to stand up and move forward into a living room that clearly belonged in Taranieth's house. Patrick started crying again as he caught sight of Emma, Taranieth and the kittens playing with three more children of varying ages whilst Keegan watched.

"Don't darken the image, because I know they're all alive. I know Taran, Emma, our kittens and Keegan are alright. I know it..."

The cave showed him a stranger, a stranger that harmed Taranieth as the rest of the scene he wanted to live for most vanished. Next he saw himself trying to heal the wounds the stranger had left. He watched as he failed and in reality his sobbing went back to the hysterical weeping it had been when he'd 'lost' his sister and his hand.

But he didn't fall over. He forced himself to slide forward a little, teeth chattering as he sobbed. "The cave lies... the cave lies! Taran... the cave lies! Taran, come back to me please!"

Taranieth looked over. Patrick was walking- crying, but walking. He pushed the dragon aside. "I'm walking to the middle." he hissed.

He stood. The cave showed him images, including Patrick shrugging and turning away, or innumerable betrayals... and they were realistic- but he barely noticed them. He knew Patrick wasn't that perfect in real life- his glasses were often a little crooked and his skin, though fair, wasn't totally flawless. The man lying in a coffin looked close, but his hair wasn't messy. Unconcern for his looks- that was the real Patrick, and he was straight ahead. Idealized versions tempted him not at all. He fixed his gaze to where he could hear Patrick, the real Patrick crying, weak and pathetic as the cave made it seem, but real and there.

And he called his name. Not anyone else's.

The fae ran, even though he knew the cave would compensate so it would take the same time as walking or crawling. All time moving forward added up to the same here. He yelled for Patrick, even though he didn't know what he'd hear.

The cave distorted the sound of Taranieth's voice, making it so that all Patrick heard was Taran asking him for help, and accusation.
"Taran... I don't know how to help. I-I don't know anything! I-!" He turned his head as a child's voice called out to him, his steps faltering and face draining of colour as he saw that line of children from the image he wanted, hanging around outside the door to the bedroom where Taranieth was -

["Daddy, what's wrong with Daddy? Is he hurt?" The voice of the only child brave enough to call out chilled him. Patrick closed his eyes to prepare himself to answer. When he opened them, he screamed and fell against the cave wall: they were all dead.

Instead of allowing the cave to show him Taranieth dead, he squeezed his eyes shut as he turned his head back to where his fiance had been. "Cave lies... but Taran is here. We don't have children. When we do, they'll be guarded more than royalty. Taran, Emma and the rest are alive. Alive. Taran... where are you?"

Patrick had started stumbling forward the moment his eyes were closed. He wouldn't open them until he touched something solid. He just kept moving, now at the half-way point.

He hit a chest.

Taranieth immediately grabbed him, holding him. He pressed him close. "I love you, Patrick. I'm sorry... I am so sorry... Let's get out of here and I'll explain what this cave is." he said. "I shouldn't have let this happen. It was plain stupid on my part. I just- you were... you smelled of sex again and I didn't know the explanation and I don't care any more just so long as you tell me- just so long as I'm the one you were calling for. Just so long as you dont leave me."

He kissed him soundly. "Now look around... see, when you're with someone... it shows you both the same things. Good things." he said. "Bit stupid really since I don't really want to take my eyes off you to see them."

Patrick squeaked at being held, then listened without opening his eyes. If he hadn't just gained all the nightmares of his life, played out in detail and together, he might not be about to react as he was.

However, he allowed his fiance to continue on, accepting the kiss and squishing the accompanying thought of will he ever kiss me hard, so I can find out if his version makes me feel more than pain?, before opening his mouth.

"Taran, I want you to look around first and tell me if you see - tell me what you see. Because I'm not opening my eyes until I know what you see. But before you tell me, here is the explanation: I spent the day with a headache. I slept in the room I used to live in, alone, to try and get rid of the headache. Adrian kissed me, not the other way around, and I didn't go looking for him. I walked right into him as I left my previous home. He was drunk, mumbling about desertion and dogs, and I wasn't 'with it' at all.

But yeah, you will see that kiss somewhere around us, because I don't think it'd hurt if you kissed me like that. I told him to go home, while smiling because I was thinking we'd need to hide any bruised lips from our children if we discover I do like it from you."

His smile faded and he became serious again, taking a deep breath. Once Taran had reacted to his explanation, he repeated, "Tell me what you see around us."
He needed to know if Emma was missing, because if she was then he'd have to make a decision...

Taranieth pressed him close. "How did he kiss you?" he asked, but it was a playful question, and as he looked up, he told Patrick the first image that came up with amusement. "I see... oh, huh! I see you and me kissing... hard, and then I'm ni[[ing at your lips... and there's a room beside, with a wee baby snuggled in the blankets... and another beside, older...There are pictures on the walls, and all their toys are wonderful carved things..."

He laughed a little. "It's all right, it's just wonderful..."

He nuzzled him. "I still think you're hiding a little something... because something scared you, I thought I heard you saying Emma's name in the mix and I could bet my hair she's involved with your trembling. Rest assured, nothing you saw in the cave really happened."

"Is the room pink? If one of our children wants pink, I won't be able to say 'no'..." Patrick murmured, warning Taran again of his intentions. Then he nodded. "Yes, I want you to kiss me hard, like that. I don't think I'd mind the bruises..."

He took in a deep breath. "Taran... it hasn't happened yet, b-but it will. Emma's -" he choked, "Emma's ill. M-my mother told me, when she took me aside before the wedding. I had to see her, and... what am I going to do?" Patrick finally opened his eyes and allowed the tears to escape. They just got worse as he saw the truth of what Taranieth had said... except in his vision, the room was partially pink and Emma was with them as well.

"I can't leave you - I won't be able to sleep wherever I am, imagining either of you hurt or dying when I can't -!" He closed his eyes again as he put his head onto Taranieth's shoulder, clutching at him.

Taranieth chuckled as Patrick's eyes opened and the cave added touches for him too, but frowned a little at his renewed sobs. "Oh, dear, Patrick. You ought to have told me. I am an illusionist but I can always call someone with healing powers, if I need to. I'll go look at her as soon as we reach home." he promised, pressing a kiss to Patrick's forehead. "No need for tears, my sweet. I can't stop your family from dying before you- they are human after all- but I can delay that death past childhood. Seems only fair."

"You wouldn't have been this upset if I hadn't been so stupid as to put you through this without even proper warning." Taranieth said softly. "I- I was being an idiot. I think I've been scared that no one like you could really love someone like me. I'm too... broken as messed up, and you saw that, and you were still there, but even still, I couldn't know... and Keegan wanted to make sure, and- I'm so sorry."
