We only have real finals at the end of a core class so they're the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.

They're pretty much electives and the core classes don't usually have a final after one trimester.

I'm slightly confused on how you sign up for classes then.
With my school, your course selection sheet looks like this:
FIRST SEMESTER:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Lunch
SECOND SEMESTER:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Lunch
With a few rare exceptions that involve a lot of paperwork, signatures, and headaches, almost all classes last for one period (and therefore take up one numbered "slot" on your sheet) and are either one semester long or two semesters long.

Weird, what we do is have a sheet with slots for classes. We just fill in the class name and number in the sheets then the computer does the rest. Lunch isn't even mentioned on our sheet.

Some, and most core classes are two.
