"But do you know staff?" Lin asked blinking, "Those are too big for me, a chopstick would be my size, I know, I tried using them to eat once."
She more along the lines speared her food with them, but since she didn't see as using chopsticks as a good idea she never bothered to use staff.

"Captain Eldrin," Celebor repeated to himself with a satisfied nod; then he turned to Lin and shrugged.
"No, Uncle Triton never showed me how to use a staff before," he grinned, "but I wanna learn! It looks like fun! 'Sides, it's not a real big kind of staff, it's just a little short one!"

Haradhel grinned down at her two young charges. "If you'd like, I could get you some staffs of the same sort but just your size," she offered. "We could go through some of the basic moves they're using as well, it's not that difficult. This is actually a beginner's class, these are the youngest of the trainees."

Not like Lin could tell everyone looked about the same age, if she didn't know what she did about some of them she would have thought they were all the same age!
"Even a really, really small one?"

Haradhel laughed. "Of course!" she assured Lin. "Small ones are easier to make than big ones, you don't need as much wood! Come on, let's go to my quarters and I'll find something to use there, all right?"
She held her hand out to Lin again in case the child wanted another ride. It would after all go faster that way.

Celebor grinned. "Neat! You live up here? I thought you lived down at the castle too with Uncle Elrohir!"
Then again he hadn't ever seen her late in the evenings or anything, now that he was thinking about it.

Lin crawled up back onto Haradhel's hand happily at the thought of having something to do. She had never asked for staff lessons because she knew her mother would think it was too much on top of all the other lessons she was taking. Her mother had likened Lin to Triton when he was little, only she had far more time to grow than he did.
So who knew what else she could shove into her little head.

Haradhel laughed as she lifted Lin to her shoulder and took Celebor's hand again, then started off down a path towards the trainees' quarters.
"No," she smiled down at the boy, "I live up here. I'll live there with Elrohir after we're married, but not before. For now, I belong up here, where I can do my training."

"Oh, you're gonna marry him?" Celebor asked brightly. "Neat! Is he gonna be a father then? 'Cos that would be really neat, too! If Mommy and Lore ever get married then Lore's gonna be my father, and I really want that to happen but ev'rybody always just says that I gotta wait, I gotta wait."
He frowned.

Lin leaned against Haradhel's head, snuggling up against it. She liked shoulder rides, even though she liked arm rides even before, but this was good too actually. Very good indeed.
"How much longer do you have to train up here?"

Haradhel chuckled down at Celebor. "Yes, I'm going to marry him," she told him warmly. "And though he won't be a father immediately after we're married, he'll be a father eventually, if all goes well. It just takes a while normally, because of course neither of us have adopted any children at all."
Strangely (at least, it felt strange to her), she felt more uncomfortable about Lin's question than about Celebor's.
"When I first began training up here," she told Lin softly, "I was told I could train as I saw fit ... and so Captain Eldrin has been very good about teaching me any time I want to be taught, and in teaching me the things I wish to learn in the best possible manner. So ... I'm advancing fairly quickly through everything. However, when I first came here, my goal was to join the Home Guard, the elite of the fighters of the Southland, who have the great honour of being the personal guards for the royal family. However ..."
She hesitated a moment before continuing.
"Now that I'm to marry Elrohir," she murmured, "I will never join the Home Guard, as I had once dreamed, so ... my training will end whenever I wish it to. I have no reason to continue, really, except for my own desire to become stronger, faster, better."

"Oh...."
Lin could kind of understand that, it was like her wanting to learn with the best someday and just become strong. Though now that she thought about it, she didn't know what she would do after she had done that.
"But how will you know?"

"How will I know what?" Haradhel questioned, puzzled by the child's vague question. They reached her quarters, and she opened the door and led them inside.
Her quarters were only three rooms: a kitchen/living/dining room, bedroom, and bath room, in which she also did her laundry. The first room of course was the biggest, where she did her cooking, eating, and general resting, and it was about twenty feet square, furnished only with a small, square table, two chairs, and a large mat below a window that faced the training area.

"How will you know when you've reached your best?" Lin asked.
She treated it like it was a matter of fact, which it was to her. Haradhel had to know when she was at her best, if she did not know when she was at her best, then she wouldn't know when to come down and if she didn't know when to finally come down then she wouldn't get to marry Elrohir.

Haradhel set Lin on the floor again and released Celebor's hand.
"Well," she said thoughtfully, "I guess I won't ever really know when I've reached my best ... I don't know if a person really could, if it's even possible, or if one could continually improve for the duration of their life, if they continued training."
She looked around the room for something that could be made into staffs for the children.
