That is SUCH a misconception. They wouldn't have carried any plague if the sanitation of the time period hadn't consisted of just throwing their waste down on the sidewalk where everyone was walking.
My girls are extremely clean, friendly and smarter than an average dog, and definitely nicer than any cat.
I only hope they weren't all at home when the place vanished.
