The entire time he remained available for Maia to answer any questions she had while he pushed the cart.
Really? All the things in the aisle and she chose Swedish Fish? They were just red and boring and... oh. They were fish. Right. He smiled to himself at the connection.
"These don't taste like fish, fair warning. I mean, it's good they don't."
Of course just because Maia could choose two things didn't mean that was all she would have. Sweets came in other forms, gifts and treats and pastries and such. That was part of the reason he felt the need to reign her in here.

Maia was having difficulty choosing. So instead she returned to Toby's side. "I can't decide!" She complained. There was so much to choose from.
So many wonderful things she wanted to try. "Help me pick one?" she asked.

Toby considered the predicament for a moment. There was such a wide array of sweets to choose from, he could understand Maia being slightly overwhelmed.
"How about something chocolate?" He approached the proper section and started looking them over. "What about this?" He lifted a middling-size bag of miniature chocolate bars; Twix, Snickers, 3 Musketeers and Milky Way. It was a classic.
"This has a bunch of different kinds in it. These have cookies and caramel, these have nougat, and these have nougat and caramel, and then those have nougat, caramel and peanuts." It was a bit much, but at least they were small-sized.

Chocolate? Maia hadn't considered that yet. She followed him to the bags of candy, and when he lifted one and suggested it, she nodded. She had no idea what nougat was, but she knew what the other things were. "Caramel's good, alright, let's get it." She smiled at Toby. "Let's share this one, chocolate's good for everyone." Except maybe Dari, but she'd find something that was good for the alien. Eventually.
"Okay! We got our two things." She walked towards the end of the aisle and beckoned Toby over. "I wonder what's in the next aisle?"

Well, it seemed like Maia was glad to follow the rules at least. No fighting. That was good. Also he was pretty sure he'd get some of that chocolate, and unless he baked he didn't tend to have anything sweet in the pantry.
Their cart was slowly filling, and when Maia asked her question Toby just smiled. He knew what was next.
"So. Cupcakes. Do you know what flavor or what kind of frosting or...?"

"Vanilla?" Maia suggested. "I don't know, what does everyone like?" What was an almost universal flavor? She wanted to give them out to Research, what was a flavor Seamus might approve of? She couldn't say fish just for the benefit of the cat, not everyone liked it. And it probably wouldn't taste very good. Fish flavored cake, yuck.
"Maybe chocolate?" She turned into the aisle.

Toby considered their options as they rounded the corner and began down the baking aisle. They would do best with some basic choices lest someone hate strawberry or lemon or cheesecake or whatever.
"Chocolate, I think," he said with a nod, although his mind urged him to just make both. He went for the cocoa powder. They'd need butter, he thought, and eggs. He popped the can in the cart and smiled to Maia.
"You can go pick out some cupcake cups? They're down there at the bottom under the icing and sprinkles." That was just about the most exciting part of cupcakes, wasn't it? Maybe aside from sprinkles. "Make sure there's at least forty."

"Chocolate is good," Maia agreed. And most people did seem to like it. "Alright, then you pick out the stuff for frosting," she said, moving towards the cupcake cups as indicated. She knelt beside the shelf, considering. She found light blue cups with white spots. "Each has twenty, can we get two?" she asked.
"We'll have enough for one for you, Dari and Seamus and research?"

Toby's brow furrowed, indicating that he was thinking even if he had never said anything. He knew most people who worked at HQ, but having to come up with all of their names on demand proved to be difficult.
"Yeah, that should be enough," he finally agreed. As for frosting, he wasn't one for store-bought. "Do you want to put sprinkles on them? We don't have to."

Maia imagined Toby was mentally counting everyone. "Good!" She was pleased: no one ought to be left out when It came to cupcakes. Or anything, really. "Ooh, we could," She agreed. She looked at the sprinkles, finally picking clear blue ones. She stood and placed them into the cart. "Everyone will be happy to have one," she said.
It'd make their work day go so much better!

Oh, so she was going for a matching flair. Interesting. She had chosen her cereal by the abundance of colors and yet picked sugar to match. They'd be prettier than his usual cupcakes, but that was quite alright.
"I'm sure they will be," he said with a nod. The chip aisle was next, followed by sodas and organics. Toby picked some proper meat for meatballs and a chicken dish later in the week. Then it was on to the bakery.
"Alright. Where do you want to start?"

They'd come to the bakery. Maia had immediately left Toby's side to gaze at the colorful array of cakes. Some were kept behind glass, but they were probably there only for display. Some even had figures on them! There were cupcakes shaped into designs from things Maia didn't recognize, including a snowflake for some reason. There were cookies as large as cakes...
The selkie was walking away. "Nope," she muttered. They had enough sugar, they were making cupcakes, they didn't need something store bought like that. The idea of bringing something home like that was overwhelming. "Next aisle?"

Toby laughed. Poor Maia. Se had seemed excited at first but quickly retreated. She wasn't especially easy to overwhelm but it could certainly happen. He was sort of glad they weren't taking any cake home considering there would likely be leftover cupcakes.
"Oh, we've gone through them all," Toby said with a nod, "All that's left is ice cream if you still want it. It's way back there." He motioned over his head.

"Let's get ice cream and head home," Maia said. "After paying, that is." She took out her wallet and offered Toby a twenty. Would that cover the stuff she'd picked out? She headed towards where Toby had indicated, beckoning him. "Come on! What kind of ice cream?"

Toby held a hand up and shook his head in refusal of the bill. He wasn't even sure what she thought she was paying for. Candy? He followed her to the ice cream though and shrugged.
"There's all kinds. Tubs and boxes and cones and pops and fruit ice and just... it's a lot to choose from." He laughed slightly. "We can get whatever. Maybe not a cake just for the room in the freezer."
