Chris nodded. "Ok. Thanks."

He still seemed very calm in his awakening. Maybe he'd spazz later.

"Umm.. thanks." He took a step, paused unsure, and then finally resumed walking with his head bent over the paper and his slightly hunched posture.

“Euuuugh…”

He groaned, pressing his hand to his head as he sat up. It felt like he had a wicked hangover and feeling as such, the lights here were way, way too bright. Teddy was lucky that the growth spurt he was sure to come any day now hadn’t hit, the pod he unfolded himself out of was cramped enough as it was.

How long had he been out, he wondered, as he blinked and tried to focus. Mostly his head still just felt like it was swimming, the low hum of the lab not making matters any worse. He was stiff and he was sore.

And he really had to take a leak.

Chance was sitting with one leg crossed over the other, a sketchpad in lap, and was lamenting the fact that pod duty was incredibly tedious when a pod hissed open. He lifted his gaze, peering curiously around at the room, and set the sketchpad on the table, stretching long legs and padding around to peer down the rows.

It was easy to find where the culprit was.

"Good morning, sunshine," said Chance lightly, a smile on his face as he approached the newbie.

"What's your name?"

He wasn’t exactly prepared for a meet and greet as he stared at the man in front of him from beneath messy bangs and a serious case of pod-hair.

“Teddy,” he answered, shrugging off the overly cheerful hello in favour of invading the other person’s space, stepping closer and looking around him, at the other pods, the sterile walls, at the sketchpad left on the table. He wasn’t interested enough in other people to poke farther, instead taking a step back and drawing himself up as best he could, blue eyes skeptical. He vaguely remembered the deal he’d made in coming here, but as far as any further itinerary, his mind was drawing a blank.

“Who’re you? Where’s the bathroom?”

He resisted a very strong urge to make a bear pun, and instead just gave Teddy a serene smile, Chance ambling back over to the table and reaching for the new trainee form. He plucked up a sheet of paper and skimmed over it with a mildly interested expression.

"My name's Chance," he answered, lifting his eyes to offer the other a slight nod in greeting, black curls falling across his eyes. "And if you want to piss, there's a washroom across the hall somewhere. However, before you so inelegantly leave - do you even know where you are?"

Teddy eyed him and his continued kindness. Gross, he thought, but at least the guy seemed okay otherwise.

“Chance,” he repeated, committing it to memory. “You work here? Kind of quiet, isn’t it? Pretty sure I can take a whiz and come back and you’ll still be here, right?”

The smile he gave might as well have had tiny little bear fangs, his face boyish but in the sort of way that you half expected him to come at you with a wedgie, or a spitball to the back of the head.

“Be right back,” he sing-songed sweetly, and he stretched out his legs, ambling out into the hall. It was a few moments before he returned – he really had to go - but he did, come back, surprisingly enough, shaking the water off of his hands and giving Chance an expectant look.

“Okay then, where am I? You're out of paper towels, by the way.”

"I do indeed," said Chance mildly. "And it's only quiet right now, doesn't mean it will be later - and it probably won't be." One black brow rose, disappearing into the fringe of curly black bangs. "Go relieve yourself, I'll still be here," Chance added, somewhat dryly.

He was slowly getting the measure of this particular recruit, the lazy, mischievous smile more of a smirk that indicated a certain sense of humor; the sickly sweet voice evidence of someone who probably disliked being told what to do.

Or maybe he was just over thinking it. Chance waited patiently for Teddy to return, giving him a vague smile when he walked back in.

"Tell the janitor, not me," he said lightly. "You're at Deus Ex Machina, an island in the middle of ******** nowhere, Bermuda Triangle. Do you remember anything about your life before you came here?"

Teddy hadn't waited for an answer, the dryness of Chance's words not registering in his egocentric little brain. The tone would likely have been lost on him anyway, what with the small hunter having the hard-headedness of a delinquent and the attention span of gnat.

He was met with a smile on his return but he didn't return it, instead taking the time to look around the room again, this time his curiosity a bit more apparent.

"Well, I don't know the janitor, so you know, whatever. Island, huh? Does that mean there's a beach? Didn't they say something about giving me a weapon?"

He pushed some hair out of his face, only for it to fall back down again. Chance sure asked a lot of questions, and he was tall. Teddy wasn't a big fan of having to look up to people, and this was no exception. Instead both his eyes and body wandered, moving around Chance to poke at things he probably shouldn't.

"I remember it being pretty shitty, if that counts. What's this do?"

A finger tapped at one of the machines hooked up to the pods.

"I'm not well-acquainted with the sanitation staff, as much as it may seem like I am," said Chance dryly, idly smoothing a thumb along one of his rings. "Sorry to disappoint. And yes, an island, yes you get a weapon, and yes, I assume whatever you went through while asleep was shitty."

He smiled beningly, and if Teddy was touching things he wasn't supposed to, Chance hardly cared. He let a lazy expression drift across his face, Chance jotting down notes on the information sheet he was supposed to be filling out about the new recruit.

"Turns your brains into jelly and your body into an experiment," he said without missing a beat, his tone casual. "It's where they put all of the ones that come in that they aren't sure what to do about. Some get woken up to be trained, some get woken up to be tested, and some don't wake up at all. Those are the ones you have to worry about, they do all sorts of s**t to them."

Pod duty was never a glorious thing, by any stretch of the imagination; but unfortunately, it was entirely necessary should new recruits wake up.

Gale sat at the little desk, reading glasses in place, a book in his lap and a cup of tea in one hand as he leafed idly through the pages, not really reading it thoroughly enough to take in what it was saying. A stack of papers sat beside him on the table, as well as a clipboard with a form that read:

Introductory Form 2A: New Recruit (Podded Trainee).

All was silent in the pod room, the only sounds that of faint hissings and whirrings from the machinery.

The silence of awaking up was almost eerie. At first Lulu didn't move as the pod door opened up in front of her. While she was awake, part of her still felt like it was in some sort of dream land. But, didn't you usually feel well rested after a good nights sleep? Just how long had she been out? And when did her muscles feel so stiff. She gathered up her courage to move and pushed herself out of the pod.

"Ugh..." She moaned as she steadied herself on her feet. They felt like jello, like they hadn't been used in quite some time. She put one hand against the pod to steady herself and look around the room she was in. The whole placed was filled with similar pods and most of the were occupied. Her thoughts felt jumbled and while she knew she shouldn't exactly be scared about where she was, she also couldn't remember why she felt that way.

"Just feels like a nasty hangover." She took her hand away from the pod in favor of messaging her temple instead. She wouldn't get anywhere just standing around regardless, so instead she glanced up and down the aisle before she started walking, hopefully toward someone.

The whirring of a pod door hissing, followed by the slightly muffled sounds of footsteps and a distant voice alerted Gale to the fact that, somewhere in the facility, a pod had opened. He pulled his glasses off, set them aside, and plucked up the clipboard, following the sounds until he came to the correct aisle.

"Good morning," said Gale lightly, a clipped English accent rolling freely off his tongue as he surveyed the young woman who was, most likely, much taller than he was (alas). "My name is Gale Gentry. Are you feeling all right?"

As Lulu had though earlier, it wasn't long before she heard footsteps approaching her. Some people might freak out in a situation like this, but oddly enough she felt pretty calm. From a distance he seemed to be about her height, but as he got closer it turned out he was just a few inches above her, so at least she wasn't looking up at him too much. Her hands went from her temples to her hips than and she took her time answering him.

"I'm not so bad off." She finally said after a pause. Then after some though on her name, her first name came to her easily. But,, after that it was a bit of brain wracking to get the rest of it out. She felt like things were just jumbled up at the moment. Surely they'd settle down given some time. "Lulu Kimbrough. Although...I think I'd like to be called Rae." It was a new life right? Might as well ditch that boring first name of her's in favor of something else.

"I feel like I know this already, but if you don't mind telling me anyway. Where are we?" Hadn't she been invited here? Why was she coming out of a pod. Ugh, these memory problems would get old fast.

As she came closer, Gale realized he had severely underestimated the young woman's height. She was, in fact, a few inches shorter than him, something that made him feel somewhat more at ease with welcoming her into Deus. After all, it was hard to do a job when one wasn't taken seriously due to both age and height.

"Good," said Gale. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lul - er, Rae, if that's what you prefer." He made a note on the clipboard in his hands, something that vaguely resembled her name but looked more like chicken scratch.

"You're at Deus Ex Machina headquarters, on a secluded island in the Bermuda Triangle," he said, lowering the clipboard again and lifting his chin a little. The standard explanation would do here. "We're a militaristic group of humans who fight against monsters and other creatures to protect our own kind. Do you remember anything about what you saw while you were in the pod?"

Chance's dryness caught Teddy guard, it had seemed he had misjudged the guy. Teddy had no use for pleasantries and the people who abided by them - sarcasm was a language he understood and respected.

"Glad I woke up then," he replied in the same casual tone, but he carefully pulled his hand back, belying his nonchalant attitude. "Tell me more about my weapon."

He turned back and Chance was scribbling things down, a report of some sort Teddy assumed. He'd had a lot of reports written about him in his lifetime and none of them good. As such, he didn't care either way what Chance was writing down, his eyes instead falling to the sketchbook on the counter.

"Is that yours?" he asked, and without waiting for an answer, picked it up, intending to leaf through it.
