"He is," Rose murmured softly. "Even after all of these years, he still prefers animals to people."
It was sad, but that was reality.
They spent the better part of an hour there, visiting with Rose and Adanedhel, and about halfway through the visit, Ecthelion returned home. He was as friendly as his father, and had calmed down over the years in much the same way though he more resembled his mother, with black hair and brown eyes.
In all it was a pleasant visit, and at last Earendil and Lin had to leave so that they could squeeze in one final visit before they had to return to the ranch for the night.

The idea with saving Aliya's and Admir's home for last was the home that Admir would be home by the time they got there. Otherwise it would have made more sense to have visit them earlier since they were quite close.
"It's amazing how much the valley in terms of people living here has expanded," Lin commented as they made their way to their final visit.

"What was it like when it first began?" Earendil asked curiously. He could sort of guess, from what he knew of the area, but other than that he really had no idea what it had been like before.

"There were only two houses," Lin replied, "Ulani and Urlich's, and Aliya's homes were the only ones in the valley and at the time no one lived in Aliya's house. Apparently it had been built several decades before and repaired several times over the time it existed."
She paused and then added.
"And there weren't the farm animals, Ulrich got those eventually."

"And of course," Earendil added, "the ranch didn't always exist ... yes, I can see it all as being very different way back then."
Suddenly he pointed at a small canoe-like boat that was on the shore of the river. "I wonder if that's Aras's boat ..."

"I think so.... it's the only boat here...."
And boats weren't common here despite the river, never a need for one. She tilted her head a bit looking at it.
"I guess they must have paddled it up the river?"

Earendil nodded. "I would guess so," he mused. "That sounds the best way to do it. It is small after all."
They passed by the boat, heading towards Aliya's house.

"I've probably only been to Aliya's house twice," Lin murmured to Earendil, "I really didn't spend much time in the valley."
The only reason why she and Adan had grown up together so to speak was because he was always at the Ranch hanging out with Aragost when he could.

"All your time at the ranch and on hunts?" Earendil smiled knowingly. "It seems you have stories about everyone here."
Except of course for the people she hadn't met, but they were few and far between.

"Just at the ranch," Lin replied, "I've only been on one hunt."
Only because it took her father that long to say yes, and even today she didn't know what convinced him to say yes to letting her go. He hadn't originally been intending to.
"Hardest thing to do ever."

"Hardest thing ever?" Earendil repeated, wondering what she meant.
"What do you mean by that?"
He spotted the house up ahead. "That one it?"

"That's the one," Lin murmured.
Maybe her mind was jumping all over the place, Lin knew she still had a tendency of doing that.
"Going on the hunt, it was one of the hardest things I had ever done."

"I couldn't imagine going out anywhere with the intention of killing others either," Earendil murmured, setting one hand on Lin's shoulder. "Don't let yourself worry about it."
He smiled warmly at her. After all, it wasn't as if anyone wanted to go out and kill people. At least, good people didn't.

Lin smiled up at him, she knew she shouldn't worry about it, and for the most part she didn't. It was just something that made her think a lot sometimes.
"I know..."
Before she knew it she was standing in front of Aliya's door.

Earendil smiled back at Lin, and before he knocked on the door, he gave her a quick one-armed hug around the shoulders.
"You know," he murmured, lifting his hand to knock on the door, "if Miyuki turns out anything at all like you have, you'll have every reason to be proud of her."
He had knocked only once and raised his fist to knock the second time when from within could be heard "Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooor!"
