Siddah Where's your reference for this, if you don't mind my asking? ♥ http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fireIf you look at the pronunciation of the word, there is no dash or hyphen there, which is how multiple syllables are noted. Pronunciation of the word (fire vs. fi-yer) do not change how many syllables there are. That has everything to do with regional accents.

In the dark of night When ice brings death to lives blood Fire keeps it at bay
According to Webster's, dictionary, as well as other sources, the correct answer is both. It can be a 2 syllable word depending on the pronouciation, but because it's traditionally spoken where the 'e' is considered to be more silent than the 'i' - there is only one working vowel in the word, thus rendering it a one syllable word, which is the more accurate ruling when dealing with how it would work in a sentence or in this case, poetry.

What I find interesting is, if you take two words that sound the same - higher and hire - they have a different amount of syllables.
hire: hahyuhr
higher: high·er
That's why the word "fire" is confusing to me.

Extra syllables is fine if you're out of haiku options, but we prefer using the ones we asked for (5-7-5) D:
Also kukuku 8D @ next quiz. Its mostly going to be based on anime/manga knowledge LOL (seeing t hat Gaia was originally an anime forum). you guys are too good at the other stuff
