It was confusing. The paths seemed to be broken, arranged in fragments. Raumias stared at the lack of order, as if willing the descent to rearrange itself so that it made any sense at all.
"I'd be better off free-falling," she lamented to herself.
Naturally, she did not really mean that.
Raumias had not b een particularly afraid of a fall, not in any other situation. She tested the ground, and it didn't seem too unstable at first. She was just walking along, basically, when a bit of fog managed to catch her.
The memory of something, sorrow so strong that it overwhelmed her. The screaming. The pain, the agony even, the way it seared into her. And someone begging to be freed from mortality, to be cut loose.
Raumias came to nauseous; what was in that fog? She rubbed her face, willing the pain and the memory to fade.
Climbing was going to suck if every time she tried she had to deal with this agony. It wasn't even her memory. She didn't think.

She made her way further down, and realized that the fog kept swirling into faces that were barely beyond her ability to recognize them: memories of the past flitted by her. They kept disappearing before she could figure out who they might be, not that she would know who they were in fact.
Raumias wished to rest on the large platform, as the descent was tough, but a red light blazed from the grooves and figures swirled out of the fog. A creature of Sorrow bearing a sword made her feel the crushing weight of despair; her mouth was dry, and her eyes stung. She took her pistols out of their holsters.
Hey, this gave her a way to kill her feelings, didn't it? How satisfying.
However, as she raised her pistol to fire, the agony left her choking down a sob. She hated crying, and never did it; why was it so hard, with this oppressive figure around. It got in a hit, as she tried to keep it together.

It wasn't her pain. She just needed to remember that.
"If it's your agony I feel, why not let me end it? You begged for it, didn't you?"
The figure slashed at her, and she did feel the sting of the wound, but she was able to rapidly fire a series of shots into it. That seemed to be working a lot better.

Seeing if she'd hit a true chord, Raumias continued:
"Death will be a respite for you," she suggested, "Just think of me like your saviour."
She still felt the pain of sorrow, but pushed it down, internalizing the agony. She shot the figure again, over and over. As many times as she could before it seemed to realize what was happening.

"If you try to end me," she added, "How will you ever rest?"
It hurts, everyone is dead, it hurts, she felt it as fiercely as she had when the memory first swirled around her.
Channeling her pain, and taking advantage of the fact that the creature seemed too stunned to really hurt her (too bad the agony of sorrow was eating away at her from the inside, or this would have been easy) Raumias fired shots into the figure without stopping.

"Did you have a name?" she asked.
Give up, please, let it end, end me, she heard, before shoving those thoughts down. Unlike the other voices, she knew those did not belong to her, not in the least.
"I do not want to die," she said, as if trying to explain why she had to do what she had to do.
She had kept on firing, until with a howl the figure vanished. All the figures within the fog did, too.
And she was left alone, just like that. A hand reached out to try to smother her, as she progressed.
After a moment, it had relinquished. She did not like this place. It was not straightforward at all...

Secretly, somewhere deep inside her, Raumias wished she had company in this place. Perhaps it would help her remember what was real, and what was not.
It did not seem to matter particularly what was real and what was not, when she was going to be harrassed by whatever it was all the same. Something tripped her, and she felt her heart pulse for a moment before she went sprawling onto the same platform she'd been on.
Not off the edge. Not off. Good.

She had thought that it was awful to be burnt, frozen, clawed and harried, but this was a new kind of awful.
Why was the fog doing this? What lived within it?
A hand covered her mouth again, and it didn't let go as quickly as the last time.
"I was not even saying anything..." she said, irritated, after it let go of her. She was spooked, sure.

"What secrets do you keep?" she asked the fog, as she attempted to descend further.
A third time, something tried to suffocate her. She howled in frustration, feeling a burst of anger: If I could hit you back, I would ruin you, a thousand times over! she thought.
She fired shots into the fog, for no particular reason, just angry.

"Is this all you do? Remain down here, suffer, make others suffer? No wonder you can never progress!" Raum said to the fog, her voice rising in volume the longer she spoke, as she walked.
It seemed to like that even less, because it then pulled her ankles in two different directions, sending her to the ground.
She sucked in a gasp of pain, and held herself close.

Something she'd said occurred to her again: If you make others suffer, you'll never progress.
Had she been looking at things in the wrong light?
Not yet; she wasn't doing it for no reason, not senselessly. Revenge had a point to it, an edge. So long as she kept that in mind, she would not wander in stagnation.
It gave her a purpose.
As she stepped from one platform to the next, with determination, hands reached out and pulled her into the abyss. She was falling, suddenly, and very quickly.
She'd never been afraid of falling. She just wrapped her arms around herself, and plunged. Down into the unknown, into the recesses. She began to slow, sure enough, in the fog: three blessings glowed before her, shedding light and heat.
Raumias smiled, and chose one.

Linswo stumbled down the pathway. He hopped from one platform to the other, curious to see what he would find at the end. But then he fell into an eddy.
They were everywhere. When he raised his head to stare at the skies, they were there. His heart sunk, but he gripped his weapon anyways. This was it. This was the end, but he would stand until the very end.
