Van frowned at Liana. Not many men, let alone woman would dare speak to him that way; something about dismembering people for a living put them off. Go outside, just to smoke? He fished around in his pockets and pulled out his carton. He offered Lia the first one, before taking a f** himself and lighting up. He passed the lighter to her as well.

"If you want a cigarette, next time, just ask."

Van pocketed the unwanted and unused lighter with a word. As he drew in his third or four lungful of cancer, the dilapidated waitress finally got off of her a** and cleared away their dishes.

"I'm just a simple man, but it seems to me that if what we're eating is making us live longer, on a whole, then isn't it good for humans?"

He shrugged.

"Still hungry? Or are we done here?"

"I'm done."

Van stood as well, not taking notice of the fact that Liana was stretching. He dropped a few crumpled bills onto the table and nodded towards the doorway, his f** perched almost daintily on the edge of his lips, his hands buried up to the forearms in his deep, *soldat coat. When they were safely outside, Van spoke up, glancing over at Liana every now and again as they walked back towards his apartment.

"You said before you could search my mind, da? And I'm sure that that was you talking to me, before, in the store. Can you read my mind? Enough to communicate without speaking?"

It was coming out all wrong. Van was content in most things in life, except his tongue. He'd never been blessed with the gift of oration, never been destined to be an orator, with his flood of words and drop of reason. No silvered tongue for this hired assassin, no sir.

[*Want to know something interesting? "Soldat" means soldier, in german, but the term was used as slang in the Great War to describe all soldiers who fought in the trenches, of all nationalities, Prussian or not. But it only applied to the men who fought in the trenches. So artillery men, Accessory men (gas), Brass, quartermasters, runner, etc. didn't get the honor of being a "soldat."]

Van thought about it for a minute; all in all, it was a good idea that they could. He'd been in plenty of situations when having a partner would've been excellent, if they didn't have to speak to communicate. Like in the case of his massive scar that stretched from one arm, across his chest and to the other; a wicked booby trap had exploded at chest level, and Van'd only had time to throw up an arm, or else take all that shrapnel and flames in the face. He shrugged at Liana.

"Surprise me. Try using a sexy voice though, so I won't jump out of my skin."

Clearly, the man was starting to warm to the idea of sleeping with his new companion.

"Did you want to know anything else about me? I feel like I've been asking questions all day long; it's your turn, for a change."

He smiled again.

Feeling a little awkward with the actions, Van replied, stutteringly, but mentally, like Liana. ‘I have kissed a girl before, several, even. And then one poisoned me with her lipstick, knocked me out and robbed me. Since then, I don’t kiss them.’ A sensible precaution, or so Van thought. ‘Are you asking me for an exception, or something?’ He’s be lying if he said what Liana was doing, kissing and nibbling softly at his neck, rubbing and stroking the rest of him slowly, wasn’t turning him on. Nay, he could veritably feeling the blood rushing south; the Russian had always been a man of great…passion. Van kissed the top of Liana’s head, before gently pushing her back away from him.

“…No exceptions today, little demon.”

"Excellent. I don't want you to get mad and take it out on me one day."

This had happened a number of times in the past with Van and previous girls and generally ended up in a dish-throwing fight. Having Liana being unable to do that to begin with, well, that was just fine and dandy! Sensing that he'd won Liana's odd little challenge, he moved back out of the alley way and to the mainstream side walk, beckoning to his demon when she didn't immediately follow.

"Nice sensual mental-voice. Didn't know that you had it in you."

“You should’ve handicapped yourself, when you were hunting and killing your sexual prey. Like, for instance, no demoness powers.”

Ivan looked over at Liana and shrugged when she mentioned men not exactly resisting her in the past. He felt a little stab of pride, at being this oddly unique master as compared to the others in her sorted, dark and blood-filled past.

“What can I say? You’re just not my…type. I like women plenty; just not you. It’s nothing personal. I favor lolitas. Not pin-up lolitas, but actual ones. Nympets.”

Van shrugged again. Each man, whether he admitted it or not, had their own personal tastes in their skirts. He had the gall to admit it, while most skirted around the issue.
