Scarker

PostPosted: Tue Jun 03, 2008 3:51 pm

Scarker tilts his head to the man when he introduces himself, then tilts his head to the rock. He didn't know if he should or not, but the rock had a name, so it only made sense to be a little polite.

"It's hollow for a simple reason. I've been traveling for days, lots of sandstorms, you see. The rock's already a quarter-meter shorter than it used to be. Anything but a hollow rock would've been gone by now, and I wouldn't have shade, so I hollowed it out before I left, and I drag it behind me when I travel at night. Granted it's not the easiest thing to do, but it beats burning, and it gives me a place to store stuff like water."

He again offers the cup of water to his guest.

"Mind if I ask what brings you out here? Personally, I'm just trying to get from a to b without really knowing where or what 'b' is. I just kinda figured that it'd be easier to get there if I went in a straight line. Not the most intelligent of plans, once you think about it long enough, but here I sit."

He gives a kind of helpless shrug before again reaching into his jacket, this time getting a long blue ribbon that he ties his hair back with. He stays attentive for Damion's answer to his question, even while he's tying.

" That makes sense I suppose....would you like some help though? I think I could squeeze alittle more room out of this...." He said, looking up at the ceiling of the rock curiously. He did, however, take the offered cup of water, knocking it back like a shot," Thanks mate."

" Well...funny thing that. See, I had a weapon, a shield that had magic on it really, but it broke on me. So I talked to some of my friends and they pointed me in the direction of someone named Dante, who's a smith apparently. I also needed a way to make some money, so he offered me a job. I gotta find a snake." He finished, hardly taking a breath and talking faster than he probably should have.

" And it doesn't sound like too bad of a plan, better than my 'wander about until I find it' plan."

"I'm afraid if the walls get much thinner there'll be a hole with the next sandstorm, or worse. It's large enough for me to rest comfortably in, so I'll manage. But this snake... I assume that we aren't just looking for a normal viper, right? Not if you're getting a good weapon out if it."

He took a pad and pencil out of a pocket and began to scribble away. It was hard to see what he was doing because there was so little light actually in the rock, but Scarker didn't have trouble seeing it.

"If anything of any size is actually alive out here, it's not coming out for a couple more hours, I think. I don't plan on moving for a couple hours anyway, so you're welcome to wait out the heat in here."

Scarker laid down on one side of the rock, stretching himself out and cushioning his head with his coat.

"Not much to do until then but wait."
PostPosted: Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:19 am

" Not sure actually, just supposed to bath the rock in it's blood. So..I can only assume it's gonna be big." Damion did have to agree with that hole in the rock though. He watched as his new compadre layed down, leaning back more against the rock himself, prepared to wait for the cover of darkness. He hadn't though about the fact that the beasties might not wanna come out until darkness.

Scarker's breathing evens out after a while as he settles in to wait. Let's just say that it was a boring time of waiting and skip ahead a few hours, hmm?

The sun was mostly set, and the less direct rays of dusk were finally allowing the heat to pass. It was still warm, but nowhere near as dangerous. Scarker poured another half-cup of water for himself and his guest before crawling back out of the rock, dragging out a rope with him. This he started to wrap around the rock, carefully wrapping it so that the door could still open and the rock would be tilted as he pulled it.

"Snake, huh? Maybe I can help you pull it out."

His staff slid out of his sleeve, and he pulled the bloody sock/bandage off of his back, tyeing it to his staff's end. This he waved around to let the blood smell get into the air.

"If anything's close, and hungry, this should bring it. I'd stay by the rock if I were you, just to be safe."

The mage's bubble vision shrank deep into the sand below him so that he'd be able to tell well before anything got too close to him.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 04, 2008 9:16 pm

" Gotcha." Damion said with nod when they finally came out, having passed the time messing with the meteorite in his hands, making it into a more egg shape. While Scarker tied the bloody sock to his staff, he instead climbed up ontop of the rock, peering around cautiously.

Never know what sort of things were going to pop out after all.

" I wake...." the thoughts beginning again, the mind shaking free of the rigors of slumber and the fog of no thought. With a twitch of muslce, the sand that had gathered and been dug into shed from the scaled body, that same sand being ground under the body as it began to slither away, following the same path that Damion himself had taken.

And thus it was not the blood that attracted the 9 meter long serpent, but instead the heat of Scarkers body, now a stark contrast to that of the cooling sand, bright and beacon like. To the two men the snake would be quite evident against the sand as it moved towards them, it's size making it impossible to hide or sneak up.

"Well, aren't we a big one... Wasn't expecting that much bulk."

The sock is discarded as the mage returns his staff to his sleeve. It was about now that Scarker realizes that he left his trenchcoat, with his chaos blades, as well as his normal blades inside the rock. This would be a problem for most people.

"K'shon! Tsu'kel!"

His voice reverberates within the rock as the mage grabs his swords with an amount of energy. Once his voice fades, the swords shoot out of the door and into the mage's hands.

"So, you need it to start bleeding, right? I'm not entirely sure if I can kill such a big snake, but blood I can get. I think..."

Scarker takes a defensive stance, one meant to allow him to leap to either side if he has to. With the extreme size disadvantage, and knowing how flexible snakes were, he couldn't afford any rash attacks.

(( And now for possibly the single most overdue post I've ever made. ))

The scene had been set painstakingly, including every element that this boy held dear. The lives of innocents and the presence of things that would prey upon the innocents, the forewarning of impending disaster and the possibility that it might be averted, even long forgotten knowledge that held no purpose other than to be reflected upon. All of these things had been used to decorate this meeting between the Angaran swordsman and the lady.

It was all for the sake of a meeting that had already ended, which meant that everything that was happening now was pointless and without meaning except for that which was given to it by the two men... the boy and the demon... who had involved themselves in this conflict. There would be no reward waiting for the victor after this was over. No honor or treasure would be won from it, and no lives would be saved if one side triumphed or was defeated. The only thing to be gained from seeing this battle through to the end was a feeling.

It was a feeling that Ryugi was desperate to have.

Ryugi Kazamaru

- J O S H U A A A A ! ! ! ! ! ! -

Thoughts raced through Ryugi's mind.

Would this do what he wanted?

Was he strong enough to overcome the challenges that lay ahead in the dark times to come?

Could he protect the world of the living from those that would seek to harm it?

All of those things and more swarmed through his mind. But he shunted them to the side as he stared ahead towards Joshua.

None of those things would matter if he couldn't overcome this challenge right here right now.

If he couldn't defeat Joshua alone, then he was certain he could with Ragnarok and himself working together!

He had to pass this final test!

And he would do it no matter what!

It was a spectacular display. The Angaran summoned up amounts of power that even he was unaware were his own and poised himself in preparation to strike a telling blow against his adversary. A sword was held in powerful hands. A belief was held in a courageous heart. The power of his ancestors flowed through his veins. In every way Ryugi had collected himself at this moment to become a true successor to his inspiration and his idol, Eclipse.

User Image
It was touching. Really.

The sight of it just warmed the demon's black heart.

It reminded him of the way that stupid, idealistic youth always seemed to inspire boys into action and the way that the same idealism drove them beyond the lines of logic and reason. The heart of a child, so to speak, was one that held the dream of a perfect world despite every undeniable imperfection that it was subjected to. It was an unstoppable dream that drove men to throw away their lives day after day since time began. The ideal that the world can be a better place than it is, and that one man can make a difference.

What was most impressive about the Angaran at this moment was not his swordsmanship, nor was it the reservoir of power that was welling up inside of him and out... it was his youth. The same expression that every courageous young warrior wore while they still held the dream that they could change the world with their own hands, from the most noble knight to the most despicable devil.

"I can't dodge that."

Ryugi wouldn't hear him over the sound of his own scream, but the words weren't meant for him. It could have been called condescending, or arrogant, or dismissive, perhaps even an act of pity in the face of all the times the young warrior's chance at victory had slipped through his fingers; but it was mercy that kept the demon's feet rooted to the ground where they were. The boy was pouring his heart into this final attack, and Joshua couldn't bring himself to crush those dreams.

The two blades in his hands crossed in front of him; the ancient dragon bone in his right at the front, and the slender blade of his sword behind it. Crackling waves of energy ran down his arms and radiated from his shoulders as a torrent of spiritual energy was released. A sudden gust of heated wind burst outwards from him and scattered several of the smaller pieces of debris stone and shattered dragon bone that littered the ground near him; though all of it was no more than side-effects of the power welling up to meet Ryugi's attack head-on. The Angaran had been summoning up power for longer, though, and had the temperament to let everything he had escape in a single, magnificent display. Both of those things gave Ryugi an advantage at that moment.

User Image

Ryugi Kazamaru
The energy blast would be so powerful that no amount of footing would allow Ryugi to stand against the force as his feet dug into the ground. The sheer magnitude of power released from the combined essence of Ryugi and Ragnarok sent Ryugi's feet digging into the rocky ground of the cave, and shot his feet back nearly thirty feet until they finally dug in enough to deal with the strain of holding the titanic amount of energy on course. The shock of the energy being released was such a strain on Ryugi's physical body that Ragnarok did everything that he could to prevent Ryugi's body from literally eroding itself away due to the energy released through it. Ryugi would live, but the pain was immense as his body fought to keep itself from being torn apart by the power of the very attack it had pulled together. Blood flowed from the corner of his mouth, and small cuts appeared on his face from the energy as his stamina dropped to dangerous levels.

What effect the blast would have on Joshua would be unknown. The man could survive a point blank limit release and come back by regenerating his own skin. This current attack was several times more powerful due to the energy released, and as it was a directed energy blast instead of simply a massive eruption in all directions, it had more power still. The heat just around Ryugi was so hot that even he was feeling the burn, his skin reddening slightly as the first stages of a burn set in, and some scorch marks would appear on his clothing, and he wasn't even on the receiving end where the blast would be many times more powerful, and much hotter. The blast, at that temperature, would easily melt straight through the opposite wall of the cave as it expanded, and flash-fried the water near the top of the lake, the sheer force blasting the top of the mesa open like a balloon that had been filled with too much hot air as it tried to release the energy from a small opening.

The blast impacted on the crossed blades with a titanic force; or more accurately it slammed into a barrier inches from them and met resistance. Simultaneously the blast was both split like a raging river meeting an immovable rock downstream and crashed through like a flood bursting a dam. The energy being released washed over despite the small object of resistance that it met and tore through the wall of stone that, while at one time would have been a cavern wall would never again be recognizable as that.

A crackling storm held fast at the center of the torrent, with both blades crossed in front of Joshua and the brunt of the energy being thrust upon him held back only by the energy that was being forced back at it. It was a losing battle for ground, however; the force of the attack was enough to drive him backwards across the cave floor and the heat was enough to melt the stone to a thin layer of magma beneath his feet.

KRK!

User Image

The barrier faltered and several small streams of energy forced themselves through; the tremendous pressure outside the protective field was forcing energy through in pinpoint streams like water bursting through the hull of a submarine. Though the defects in the barrier were not responsible for the sound that had caused Joshua to grit his teeth tighter. Despite being heavily fortified by the energy running through it, the brittle relic that Joshua held in his right hand had splintered... first in one place, then in others. Cracks spidered through the bone, showing how close to its limit it was already coming.

When it shattered, Joshua would not be able to maintain the barrier with only one object to focus through and even switching the focus to his armguard or even his own hand would cause it to lapse momentarily... which was one moment too long.

'Don't hate me for this.'

Ryugi Kazamaru
The blast would finally subside after nearly seven seconds of fire-storming hell and searing energy. The cave would be barely recognizable as a large section across the center had been blasted, carved, and melted out from the heat of the blast, showing out to a massive hole to the outside that had been blown into it. But everything to either side would be virtually unharmed other than some dark scorch marks and some light fires were the heat had combusted a few dried plants in the path. The skylight that had let in light before would be much much larger, and cast moonlight across the battlefield as Ryugi came out of his merged form, and Ragnarok returned to the blade. He panted, blood dripping from scorched skin, and blackened marks on his clothing showed what he'd just been through as he collapsed to on knee, Ragnarok stabbed into the earth for support. Dust and rock would cloud his view of Joshua, wherever he might be.

User Image

Nothing would be seen through the cloud of dust, rock, smoke, and steam that had enveloped the interior of the desert mesa in those seven seconds. It had been like an eternity as the attack pressed on, but now that it was over it would feel even longer as Ryugi waited for the air to clear.

He could hear, though. Despite the ringing in his ears that the momentary firestorm had left there were sounds in that cloud that told stories.

The hissing of the pond as the boiling water on the surface slowly died down and intermixed with the frigid temperature of the deeper water.

The crumbling stones that piled upon the ground as the walls around them adjusted to their new shape.

The heavy splat of molten rock as it dripped in gobs from the edges of the hole that had been burned through the side of the mesa.

The labored breathing in his chest as the Angaran struggled against his own fatigue.

Drip. Drip.

Silent compared to the rest of these was the sound of droplets falling into a pool.

User Image

As the cloud began to settle and the steam dispersed into the air, the makings of the world around the Angaran would become clearer to him and he would begin to see the things that had been hidden from him in the aftermath. The state of the cave, the pool, and the shoreline. The devastation caused by his uncontrolled assault. The figure standing in front of him not at all the way that it had been.

Joshua had dropped his left foot back, turning himself slightly to the side so that his right side was forward; and it appeared that this was the way he had been standing when the barrier finally came down. Heavy burns covered the entirety of his right side, turning large sections of skin black charring them to the point that they were beginning to peel away. Gashes and lacerations from the energy force had carved themselves out in his side, hip, leg, and even a blackened strip of flesh torn out of his right cheek. Though it had appeared these parts of his body were the ones that had been shielded from the full force of the attack.

With a slow drip of blood falling into a pool around his foot, the complete length of Joshua's right arm from the shoulder to the wrist had been stripped of flesh on one side, straight down to the charred bone. Strands of stringy, crisp flesh still remained in some places where the flesh had been shredded and burned, but much of the wound was completely clean as if it had simply been peeled straight off.

In stark contrast, Joshua's left side was relatively undamaged. A few tears in the skin and a few burn marks were all the injury that could be seen. While his right arm hung lifeless in front of him with hardly the muscle left on it to move it from where it was, the demon's left arm was stretched out behind him with his sword still in hand; clenched tightly by the hilt. As the obscuring cloud around them lifted, his left arm dropped as well. It hadn't been that he had drawn the sword back in preparation for a counterattack, when the barrier broke he had moved it behind him to shield the sword with his body.

User Image

"...but don't think you're going to get a chance like that in a real fight."

The right fist clenched somewhat... it at least still had the muscles necessary for that. His first step was forwards, though his second was to the side as his body faltered somewhat on the burned leg. The third, forth, and all subsequent steps did not suffer, but for that brief moment he had almost fallen.

"Gale..."

The steam from the pond that Joshua walked through seemed to solidify and take shape beside his left side; forming arms, legs, a head, a body. The slender figure of a woman in a flowing dress danced in the air for a moment, running its hands across Joshua's left wrist and forearm before sweeping slowly and gracefully around his back to wrap its arms around his right arm; stroking insubstantial fingers over the flesh that was no longer there.

"...go do it."

The spirit nodded silently, releasing the arm and floating, sinking for a brief moment like a fish in water that had stopped swimming. Then it drifted, swiftly flowing forwards towards the struggling Angaran with outstretched hands reaching for his face...

...one of them touching his cheek in a way so light that no creature of flesh and blood ever could, and the other patting him on the head. The gossamer woman smiled softly and mouthed two words, no sound ever escaping her lips. 'Good boy.'

Eloquent Conversationalist

PostPosted: Fri Jun 06, 2008 12:33 am

Ryugi's red eyes watched as the dust finally settled, and the battered and heavily bruised Joshua stood. For a moment Ryugi's mind shot a small jolt through him, until he saw the damage his attack had done. Joshua's right side was nearly obliterated, and his burned and charred arm looked as if it continued to exist sheerly on its own willpower. His entire body looked like it had taken a beating, but it was nothing compared to his right side. That was far more than some scorched skin. And then, he saw it.

The almost imperceptible misstep.

To a less trained eye, one might have missed it. But for that split second, Joshua had almost fallen due to the battle damage. Battle damage that Ryugi and Ragnarok's combined strength had created. Ryugi wasn't thinking about pride, or victory at the moment, though. He had a feeling that if he'd really wanted to, Joshua could have likely dealt with the attack in a far less damaging way. But perhaps he'd wanted to test his own strength against what the fighting pair had been able to accomplish rather than simply duck away. But whatever the case, Ryugi's red eyes continued to watch the man and the woman.

They gazed at the spirit as she mouthed the words. Good boy, eh? The Angaran couldn't help but make an imperceptible grin as he realized what she'd said. So, he'd done well enough to earn him praise. That was good enough for him. Panting, he forced his body up, his legs and body burning at the sizable effort. Ragnarok was placed on his back. It had done its job and deserved as much of a rest as Ryugi did. Slowly, he'd make his way towards Joshua's body, passing him on his left as the crunch crunch of dried and burned plant material and scorched earth crackled under his boots.

He'd turn his glance towards the man for a moment, his pace unchanging as he approached. All that power and Joshua was still standing. It was amazing. Ryugi could see why the Reaper was so well-tasked for his job. Despite his half-rivalry with him, Ryugi could respect that kind of ability. Even if he didn't really like the man...

User Image

You're one tough nut to crack, you know that?

He'd grunt a bit and keep on walking, passing the Reaper and heading out through the very hole he'd made in the side of the cavern. He was still running on adrenaline, and his brain wasn't registering the soreness and dozens of tiny painful burns, scrapes, and cuts he had on his body. He was gonna be sore as hell in a few hours. Either way, he now knew the power that he and Ragnarok could wield together. He'd seen the strength of the new abilities granted to him by D, and witnessed them cripple a Reaper. Joshua could still fight, and was still standing, but that was much better than last time the two had fought. With a final word, Ryugi would exit the cavern and head towards Strata. Heaven or Hell was coming up soon, after all, and he wanted to be there...

Later.

"It's in the job description."

Men didn't slay monsters, monsters did. For a man to walk down that path, he had to lose a part of himself in the process and become something else. That was the way of the Reapers, who had left the world behind them. It was a mantle taken up only by those who have nothing left to lose.

Ryugi had made the right decision by rejecting D.

"Hey kid..." The Reaper rested the sword across his shoulder; not seeming to mind that the edge of the blade was cutting into the skin and drawing a minute amount of blood.

"GRAH!!"

You'd have to be deaf not to hear Damions' war cry, people from several miles away could probably hear it just as clearly as Skarker could right then. It was useful, as the earth user popped off the top of the bigger rock with his smaller rock in both hands, pulled up over the top of his head with the clear intent of bashing the snakes brains in.

Why such a brutal tactic? Cause he damn well could! Fanciness was for later, raider tactics were needed for something like this, and Damion damn well intended to bludgeon the s**t out of the unprepared beasty.

Unprepared for one, but not the other, indeed. The snake could 'see' Skarker, his heat signature standing out quite nicely against the sand, but Damion had been hiding behind the rock, and thus he only appeared as a blur to the giant viper.

Not that it mattered of course.

Waves of muscles suddenly tightened, pulling the snake into the coiled state of a strike before it lashed out, the nose catching Damion smack in the chest while he was still in the air, launching him back and over the rock. The hunter was back in coil before the man even hit the ground, completely unafraid of either Skarker or Damion.

Animals knew no fear.
PostPosted: Mon Jun 09, 2008 3:52 pm

Scarker didn't have a choice anymore. After seeing just how much speed the snake had, he had to induce a fatality or risk suffering one. The mage didn't move, he knew he'd never get far enough, so he just stood there in a stance that he probably assumed would be good for a counterattack. At this point, he figured it was pretty much a given that he would be the snake's next target, so he had to be ready to strike.

That would normally be quite useless, given that there was little chance for the mage to survive an attack, let alone with enough time to counter, except for the slight swirl of wind around him. All he needed was six seconds of stare-off with the snake for the energy that he was desperately pulling in to finish the pattern that he needed.

His sightless eyes locked casually onto the snake's enormous orbs with a look that could only be translated to: 'well, aren't you going to be an interesting opponent.'

He was right, he was the next target, seeing as how he was the only other creature present now that Damion had been sent flying. The giant reptile wasted no time once it was back to it's starting strike position, snapping forward close to the ground, fanged mouth wide open as if to swallow the 'blind' man whole. Venom dripped from it's needle like teeth to fall on the sand in a streak. By all accounts, it should have had the swordsman, or atleast made it that far.

But it didn't.

It had instead decided to piss off a man who's newest power lay all around them in particle form, as a hand of sand shot up from the ground as the snake got within feet of Skarker. The fingers closed down on it's body, causing it to yank to a stop close enough that Skarker could cut it right the ******** up.

The controller of said arm was standing ontop of the rock again, right side forward with his hand pointed out away from his body, like he was upper cutting something." Cut it!"
PostPosted: Wed Jun 11, 2008 1:34 pm

Scarker's timing was perfect, everything lined up. The snake was coming at the expected speed, the spell would go off in time, all he had to do was jump and the snake would be dead before its momentum was lost.

Then there was the sand-wave. The mage saw it, his sight wrapping around and understanding it on a level that he couldn't handle at the moment. All he knew was that his magic was going off, and he had to do something.

He had already sprung into the air, his instinct had been correct about the timing. His swords were pointed toward the serpent, waiting for it to impale itself. His eyes were glowing violently red as the spell activated. He had one shot, and now was it.

The last of the energy that he had was used to grab himself by his shoulders and drag him forward, with his swords pointed directly at the snake's eyes. There was enough force behind the drag to pierce the 3' long blades well into, if not through the serpentine orbs. If that wasn't fatal, what happened next had to be.

From Damion's point of view, it would look like Scarker exploded.

For a split second, there was only a hair's breadth between the mage's clothing, scales, and hair, and the near solid wall of flame that had suddenly surrounded him. Then there was only a mass of fire bursting outward until it extended 7' from all parts of him. It only lasted a few seconds, but the flames were incredibly hot, and their origin was incredibly close.

The smoke that was just from the existence of the flame was a strange off-white, and would clear much faster than the black smoke produced by any flesh that was burned by it. Still, it would be a minute or two until there was any sure sign of what had happened.

The Pain! The screaming pain! Now the snake was as blind aswell as in screaming pain, the muscled body tensing and thrashing about, scales aflame. The long swords would indeed peirce the serpents eyes, it had been too busy with Damions sandy grip. Even if it hadn't been so busy, vipers could only strike from the original position, unlike when constrictors bit.

It's sudden jerking about would break the sand hand that held it down, the snake thrashing about in the sand. Weither or not Scarker held on to the blades would determine if he was in for a wild ride or not.

Damion covered his eyes with his free hand, blinded by the sudden flash of flames and smoke. " Sssska!" not really a word, but a good enough evaluation of his current displeasure. With odd spots in his eyes, Damion would try to look through the smoke for Scarker, worried about the blind mage.
