Marcus shook his head. It was, after all, his fault. "Nonsense. Besides, it's not as though you've ever fauned on me in the first place. If I was looking for another brainless girl, I would have found one by now."

Terryn sighed. "I do not want to hold you here out of pity." She had a feeling that the only reason he hadn't run was because he felt guilty for what had happened, when really she should have been stronger and not let her emotions cloud her mind and weaken her.

"And when I begin to pity you, I will leave. Make no mistake of that," Marcus told her firmly. Of course, he very much pitied Terryn now. But he was almost certain that she didn't mean exactly what she was saying, and he cared for her a great deal besides.

Terryn rolled her eyes. "Then do as you will. I just hate myself right now." She threw the covers over her head and hid from him, not wanting to deal with her own stupidity.

Terryn was gone before Marcus could move, and he tried to pry the blankets away from her half-heartedly. "Why? What did you do?" he asked, giving up on the blankets and now speaking to a lump in the bed.

"It is what I did not do." Terryn held the sheets tightly, refusing to let go. "I only got in one jab and a conveniently placed kick. I did not even see the other man but I sure felt whatever he hit me with."

Marcus swallowed. "I ran away from you. I didn't know what to do, and I was stupid, and I ran away, thinking that it would make things better." He looked sobred now, more serious and thoughtful than he had ever been in front of Terryn. "You frightened me out of my wits when you said that, you know."

His mouth hung open for a bit, but it was completely devoid of sound. "I don't know," he confessed. "I don't know what you've done, but believe me, you've done it, and it has affected me profoundly."
